O cerrado é o segundo bioma mais representativo do Brasil, correspondendo a 23% do território brasileiro. É considerado um hotspot de biodiversidade, apresentando-se bastante ameaçado. Sua devastação é devido, principalmente, ao avanço das culturas agroindustriais de grande mercado. Sabe-se da importância da polinização para a reprodução de inúmeras espécies vegetais. Neste contexto, as abelhas desempenham um papel fundamental devido à sua dependência e especialização na coleta de recursos florais. Mas, estas também requerem locais propícios à nidificação. Além da destruição do hábitat através da fragmentação, a composição da paisagem que permeia fragmentos de vegetação nativa pode influenciar a diversidade apícola e afetar de forma diferente as espécies de acordo com seu hábito de nidificação e alimentação. É fato que as espécies mais especializadas tornam-se mais vulneráveis às alterações ambientais por apresentarem exigências particulares e pouca plasticidade na obtenção de recursos. A fim de analisar a interação entre diversidade de abelhas e Ecologia da Paisagem, foram selecionados dois levantamentos de fauna apícola (Itirapina – SP e Pirassununga – SP). Para isso foram elaborados mapas de uso e ocupação do solo através do SPRING 5.1.7 e, posteriormente, gerados os índices de Ecologia de Paisagens selecionados para o estudo com o auxilio do aplicativo FRAGSTATS 2.0. As espécies coletadas em ambas as áreas foram separadas em guildas funcionais de forrageamento e nidificação. A área de estudo de Itirapina foi sub-dividida em 13 classes de uso e ocupação da paisagem e a área de estudo de Pirassununga foi sub-dividida em 7 classes, conforme as características presentes em cada área. The goal of this work is to perform a historical approach of important results about maxima and minima, on Euclidean geometry, involving perimeters, areas and volumes. As a highlight, we can mention the Dido’s isoperimetric problem and the Papus’s problem about the wit of the bees. In this context, with a concern didactic, we tried to use, whenever possible, the geometry classical formulas to the calculus of areas. On the other hand, in the case of isoperimetric inequality the techniques of differential and integral calculus became more suitable for our purposes.

The high perishability of the onion has limited its conservation period and caused great post-harvest losses. The need of consuming fresh products has led the market of minimally processed products to considerably rise. Cut operations during the minimal processing may not only cause important biochemical reactions in the onion tissues, but also affect its sensorial quality, resulting in a drastic reduction in the post-harvest life of the product. In this study the influence of different cut types was assessed on the quality of minimally processed onions. 'Baia Periforme'onions were transported to the laboratory, where they were selected, cleaned, classified, peeled, minimally processed into slices, grated and chopped, and subsequently sanitized for 10 minutes in sodium hypochlorite at 100 mg L-1. The product was kept on polystyrene trays covered with plastic film (PVC) as 80 g portions and conserved in a cold chamber at 5 +/- 1 degrees C and 85 +/- 5% RH, during 6 days. Physical, chemical and physico-chemical assays were carried out. Statistical design was completely randomized with 3 treatments and 3 replications (plot group) and 5 replicationss for the control group. For sensorial analysis (aspect and smell), 10 replications were used. To compare means, Tukey test at 5% significance was adopted. During the refrigerated conservation, sliced onions kept more stable levels of soluble solids, titratable acidity, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars. The grated onion was superior considering the sensorial characteristics, indicating that the cut types interfered in these features and the grated onion was more accepted by evaluators.

Some organisms disperse energy, associated with the transportation of resource, which is not necessarily food. Stingless bees of Central Amazonia (Melipona flavolineata and M. lateralis) collect clay in banks along streams for nest building. The moisture of the clay varies along the bank, and bees collect clay from specific location, indicating that there is some sort of preference regarding their selection. This study aims at identifying: if larger bees carry more clay; if there is a preference for moisture of substrates; and if bees are less efficient accumulating and transporting clay when it is wet. In order to do so, I measured the size of the bees and of the pellets of clay found in the corbicula. I set up a field experiment to test substrate preferences. The amount of clay transported, increased exponentially in accordance to the size of the bee, and the preferred substrate was the driest clay. The amount and the efficiency of removal of clay were not affected by the moisture of the substrate. Despite the wet clay being denser, it does not reduce the efficiency of exploitation of the resource, but suggests that bees spend more energy to carry the same quantity of wet clay, which may be the underlying mechanism explaining their preference for removing drier clay.

The aim of this study was to characterize dog bites using data on biter dogs and victims. An exploratory cross-sectional study was performed using 203 records of individuals who had attended in public health services in 2009 in the municipality of Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, after they had been bitten by a dog. Over 70% (92/129) of the biter dogs were male and most of them (71%) received as a gift. Dog owners reported companionship as the main reason for acquiring the dog. The victims who were children were predominantly male, while the victims who were elderly were predominantly female. Most children were bitten on the head/neck, while adults were bitten on the hands/feet and lower limbs (p<0.0001). The owner of the dog was known in 83.2% of cases. However, rabies observation of the biter dog following the attack was only reported in 59.4% of cases. Situations involving aggression were related to dogs having escaped from their home (18.7%) or roaming free on the streets (17.0%). The analysis of biting dog characteristics using information obtained from dog bite victims and biting dog owners can help direct the medical treatment for dog bite victims. Moreover, concepts of responsible dog ownership can reduce the occurrence of bites.
