An enantiospecific synthesis of the angular triquinane system present in the sesquiterpenes cameroonanes and silphiperfolanes has been accomplished, starting from 5-isopropenyl-2-methylcyclopent-1-ene-1-methanol [readily available in three steps from (R)-limonene] employing an intramolecular rhodium carbenoid insertion into the C-H bond of a tertiary methyl group for the construction of the triquinane system.

In the title racemic compound, C(26)H(32)N(2)O(3), an intramolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bond is formed between the phenolic OH group and the tertiary amine N atom. Another O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bond that is formed between the OH group and the pyridine N atom links the molecules into a polymeric chain extending along the a axis. The structure is further stabilized by intramolecular and intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions.

In the title compound, C(15)H(10)N(4)O(10), the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is 89.05 (16)degrees. One O atom of one of the nitro groups is disordered over two sites in a 0.70:0.30 ratio. In the crystal, the molecules are linked by weak C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions.

We report the electrical anisotropic transport properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) infiltrated aligned carbon nanotube mats. The anisotropy in the resistivity increases with decreasing temperature and the conduction mechanism in the parallel and perpendicular direction is different. Magnetoresistance (MR) studies also suggest anisotropic behavior of the infiltrated mats. Though MR is negative, an upturn is observed when the magnetic field is increased. This is due to the interplay of electron weak localization and electron-electron interactions mechanisms. Overall, infiltrated carbon nanotube mat is a good candidate for anisotropically conductive polymer composite and a simple fabrication method has been reported. The spectral photocurrent characteristics of two donor-acceptor diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based copolymers (PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT) blended with a fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were studied using Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy (FTPS) and monochromatic photocurrent (PC) method. PDPP-BBT: PCBM shows the onset of the lowest charge transfer complex (CTC) state at 1.42 eV, whereas TDPP-BBT: PCBM shows no evidence of the formation of a midgap CTC state. The FTPS and PC spectra of P3HT:PCBM are also compared. The larger singlet state energy difference of TDPP-BBT and PCBM compared to PDPP-BBT/P3HT and PCBM obliterates the formation of a midgap CTC state resulting in an enhanced photovoltaic efficiency over PDPP-BBT: PCBM. Solar cells on thin conformable substrates require conventional plastics such asPS and PMMA that provide better mechanical and environmental stability with cost reduction. We can also tune charge transfer between PPV derivatives and fullerene derivatives via morphology control of the plastics in the solar cells. Our group has conducted morphology evolution studies in nano- and microscale light emitting domains in poly (2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends. Our current research has been focused on tricomponent-photoactive solar cells which comprise MEH-PPV, PMMA, and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM, Figure 1) in the photoactive layer. Morphology control of the photoactive materials and fine tuning of photovoltaic properties for the solar cells are our primary interest. Similar work has been done by the Sariciftci research group. Additionally, a study on inter- and intramolecular photoinduced charge transfer using MEH-PPV derivatives that have different conjugation lengths (Figure 1, n=1 and 0.85) has been performed.

Alternating copolymer of 7,9-di(thiophen-2-yl)-8H-cyclopenta[a]acenaphthylen-8-one-co-benzothia diazole was synthesized by palladium(0) catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. This solution processable copolymer shows an excellent thermal stability and has a broad absorption range from 300 to 800 nm with a band gap of about 1.51 eV. High LUMO energy level and low band gap of the synthesized copolymers suggest that, this copolymer will be a suitable donor material for use in an organic photovoltaic device. Photovoltaic devices were fabricated from the blend of copolymer and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester as the active material. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

Impairment of Akt phosphorylation, a critical survival signal, has been implicated in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease. However, the mechanism underlying pAkt loss is unclear. In the current study, we demonstrate pAkt loss in ventral midbrain of mice treated with dopaminergic neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), when compared to ventral midbrain of control mice treated with vehicle alone. Thiol residues of the critical cysteines in Akt are oxidized to a greater degree in mice treated with MPTP, which is reflected as a 40% loss of reduced Akt. Association of oxidatively modified Akt with the phosphatase PP2A, which can lead to enhanced dephosphorylation of pAkt, was significantly stronger after MPTP treatment. Maintaining the protein thiol homeostasis by thiol antioxidants prevented loss of reduced Akt, decreased association with PP2A, and maintained pAkt levels. Overexpression of glutaredoxin, a protein disulfide oxidoreductase, in human primary neurons helped sustain reduced state of Akt and abolished MPP+-mediated pAkt loss. We demonstrate for the first time the selective loss of Akt activity, in vivo, due to oxidative modification of Akt and provide mechanistic insight into oxidative stress-induced down-regulation of cell survival pathway in mouse midbrain following exposure to MPTP.-Durgadoss, L., Nidadavolu, P., Khader Valli, R., Saeed, U., Mishra, M., Seth, P., Ravindranath, R. Divalent metal complexes of general formula M(2-nb)(2)(mc)(2)].2(2-nbH), where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) or Zn(II), 2-nbH = 2-nitrobenzoic acid and mc = methyl carbazate (NH2NHCOOCH3), have been prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Single-crystal X-ray study of the Cu(II) complex revealed that the molecule is centrosymmetric, with two N,O-chelating mc ligands in equatorial positions and a pair of monodentate 2-nb anions in the axial positions. The lattice 2-nbH molecules help to establish the packing of monomers through hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thermal stability and reactivity of the complexes were studied by TG-DTA. Emission studies show that these complexes are fluorescent.
