The encapsulation of a rare earth (RE) complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen in modified S1-MCM-41 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane is reported for the first time. The luminescence intensity of the RE complex in the modified Si-MCM-41 is about 9 times as strong as in unmodified Si-MCM-41 and the luminescence of the RE complex in the modified SI-MCM-41 has good color purity.

The synthesis and characterization of the mesoporous materials FSM-16 (folded sheets mesoporous materials) with highly ordered structure in open-vessel by using cetylpyridium bromide (CPBr) and the single-layered polysilica Kanemite as new template and silicon source, respectively, has been investigated systematically. The hexagonal arrangements of uniformly size pores were characterized by FTIR. XRD. nitrogen adsorption. TG-DTA. SEM and TEM. Especially, the porous products with higher surface areas show remarkable thermal stability up to 1000 C. The potential application as carrier of catalysts or host-guest materials is anticipated. MCM-41-hosted fluorescein mesophase was prepared by addition of the dye into the sol-gel mixture for the synthesis of MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve under microwave radiation. The as-synthesized organo-silica-surfactant material possessed hexagonal mesostructure with short-range symmetry and a uniform nanosize of about 30 nm. Furthermore, fluorescence spectrum, increase in lifetime and lack of aggregation at high concentration were discussed in terms of the effect of the host-guest interaction on these properties. Heteropoly acid H4SiW12O48 (denoted as SiW12) was assembled with the mesoporous materials MCM-41 modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (denote MCM-41((m))). The electrochemical behavior of SiW12/MCM-41((m)) complexes-based electrode indicated SiW12 anion was adsorbed by MCM-41((m)). In MCM-41((m)) electrode, large voltammetric waves, showing that the electrostatic bound ions adsorbed in MCM-41((m)) were electrochemically active. The potential application as amperometric sensors for nitrite is anticipated.

The isothermal crystallization process of a PCL/SAN blend (90/10 wt.-%) was investigated by using real time image analysis and hot stage optical microscopy. It was found that the growth rate of ring-banded spherulites in the isothermal crystallization process is not constant. Slow growth occurs in the bright bands, while fast growth is found in the dark bands. The radially unequal growth rate of ring-banded spherulites in PCL/SAN blends may be related to the convex band structure on the surface. This new discovery gives us the idea that rhythmic growth is effective in the growth process of ring banded spherulites.

Supported catalysts, consisting of SiW12 immobilized on hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) and its aluminum-substituted derivative (MCM-41) with different loadings and calcination temperatures, have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. It is shown that SiW12 retains the Keggin structure on the mesoporous molecular sieves and no HPA crystal phase is developed, even at SiW12 loadings as high as 50 wt%. In the esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol, supported catalysts exhibit a higher catalytic activity and stability and held some promise of practical application. In addition, experimental results indicate that the loaded amount of SiW12 and the calcination temperatures have a significant influence on the catalytic activity, and the existence of aluminum has also an effect on the properties of supported catalysts.

A unique templating approach for the synthesis of hexagonal mesoporous aluminosilicates via self-assembly of pre-formed aluminosilcate nanoclusters with the templating micella formed by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is described. The obtained materials of MAS-5 are hydrothermally stable, which is shown by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Furthermore, as characterized by NMR technique, MAS-5 has stable tetrahedral aluminum sites that is the major contributions to the acidity of aluminosilicate molecular sieve, and on non-framework aluminium species in the samples was observed.

Ti-substituted mesoporous SBA-15 (Ti-SBA-15) materials have been synthesized by using a new approach in which the hydrolysis of the silicon precursor (tetramethoxysilane, TMOS) is accelerated by fluoride. These materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (Y-RF), N-2 sorption isotherms, diffuse-reflectance UV-visible (UV-vis) and UV-Raman spectroscopy, Si-29 MAS NMR, and the catalytic epoxidation reaction of styrene. Experiments show that Ti-SBA-15 samples of high quality can be obtained under the following conditions: F/Si greater than or equal to 0.03 (molar ratio), pH less than or equal to 1.0, aging temperature less than or equal to 80 degreesC, and Ti/Si less than or equal to 0.01. It was found that the hydrolysis rate of TMOS was remarkably accelerated by fluoride, which was suggested to play the main role in the formation of Ti-SBA-15 materials of high quality. There is no stoichiometric incorporation of Ti, and the Ti contents that are obtained are quite low in the case of the approach that is proposed. The calcined Ti-SBA-15 materials show highly catalytic activity in the epoxidation of styrene.

Ordered mesoporous carbons composed of arrays of nanotubes have been synthesized using ordered mesoporous silica templates via catalytic chemical vapor deposition. The ordered carbons possess bimodal pores, namely, the pores arise from the "replica" of frameworks of the template and the pores correspond to carbon nanotubes formed in the channels of the template (see Figure).

In this study, a novel sol-gel method is used to synthesize amorphous silica-alumina materials with a narrow mesoporous distribution and various Si/Al molar ratios without using any templates and pore-regulating agents. During the preparation procedure, only inexpensive inorganic salts were used as raw materials, instead of expensive and harmful alkoxides. The precursor sol was dried at room temperature in a vacuum box kept at 60 mmHg until it began to form the gel. The results of a nitrogen sorption experiment indicate that the synthesized materials with different Si/Al molar ratios have similar mesoporous distributions (within 2-12 nm). Moreover, it was found that the material's pore size distribution remains at a similar value during the heat treatment from room temperature to 550 degreesC. On the basis of the nitrogen sorption, TEM, and AFM characterization results, a formation mechanism of mesopores which accounts for the experimental data is also suggested. This suggested mechanism involves rearrangement of the primary particles during the drying process to form the precursors of the similarly sized mesopores. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, thermal analysis (TG/DTA), Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and AFM. The results of Al-27 and 29Si MAS NMR indicate that the distribution of silicon and aluminum in the synthesized materials is more uniform and homogeneous than that in the mixed oxides prepared via the traditional sol-gel method even at high alumina contents. The type and density of the acid sites were studied using pyridine adsorption-desorption FTIR spectroscopy. It was shown that the acidity of the synthesized materials is higher than that of the silica-alumina materials prepared by conventional methods.

In this study, amorphous silica-alumina nanomaterials with narrow mesoporous distribution can be obtained by two novel sol-gel processes, without the use of any templates. The results of our experiments show that the preparation method has a great influence on the precursor sol structure as well as the specific surface area and mesopore volume of the final product, but has no effect on the pore size distribution.

Mesoporous spinel membranes as ultrafiltration membranes were prepared through a novel sol-gel technique. By in situ modification of the sol particle surface during the sol-gel process, control of the material structure on a nanometer scale from the earliest stages of processing was realized. Nano-particles with a chocolate-nut-like morphology, i.e. spinel MgAl2O4 as a shell and gamma -Al2O3 as a core, were first revealed by HRTEM results. The formation of the spinel phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). N-2 adsorption-desorption results showed that the mesoporous membranes had a narrow pore size distribution.
