The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and polarizing microscopy (POM). It is found that the miscibility is related to the composition of the blends. When the PEO content is over 20 percent, the miscible blends turn into partially miscible and the phase separation can be observed with POM. The addition of the PEO influences not only the morphology of PHB crystals and the radial growth rate of spherulites, but also the cold crystallization temperature.

Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) were prepared from newly synthesized 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphyl dianhydride ((+/-)-, (S)-, and (R)-BNDADA). PAIs based on dianhydride monomers with different ee % were investigated with respect to their structures and chiroptical properties. These polymers were highly soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, pyridine, etc., and showed high glas s transition temperatures of 287-290 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures of 450-465 degrees C in nitrogen. Optically active PAIs exhibited high specific rotations, excellent optical stabilities, and a dependence of optical activities on temperature. Investigations on chiroptical properties indicated that chiral conformation was possessed by optically active PAIs. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) containing 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl units in the main chain were prepared by polycondensation reactions of newly synthesized dianhydride, 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxylzenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride[(S)-BN-DADA and (+/-)-BNDADA], with diamines, The properties of the resulted PAIs were fully characterized by a combination of investigations on inherent viscosity, thermal properties(DSC and TGA), specific rotation, CD and UV-Vis absorbance. These PAIs showed good solubilities, thermal properties and optical stabilities. Interesting UV-Vis absorption behavior of films casted from these PAIs was observed and analyzed.

A novel synthetic route to cyclic PEEK precursors is described. These new cyclic oligomers have been prepared from hydroquinone and N-phenyl(4,4'-difluorodiphenyl) ketimine. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature.

A successful micronization of water-insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) into narrowly distributed nanoparticles stable in water has not only enabled us to study the enzymatic biodegradation of PCL in water at 25 degrees C by a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS), but also to shorten the biodegradation time by a factor of more than 10(3) compared with using a thin PCL film, i.e. a 1 week conventional experiment becomes a 4 min one. The time-average scattering intensity decreased linearly. It was interesting to find that the decrease of the scattering intensity was not accompanied by a decrease of the average size of the PCL nanoparticles, indicating that the enzyme, Lipase Pseudomonas (PS), ''eats'' the PCL nanoparticles one-by-one, so that the biodegradation rate is determined mainly by the: enzyme concentration. Moreover, we found that using anionic sodium lauryl sulphate instead of cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant in the micronization can prevent the biodegradation, suggesting that the biodegradation involves two essential steps: the adsorption of slightly negatively charged Lipase PS onto the PCL nanoparticles and the interaction between Lipase PS and PCL. After isothermal crystallization of the amorphous poly(ether ether ketone), double endothermic behaviour can be found through differential scanning calorimetry experiments. During the heating scan of semicrystalline PEEK, a metastable melt, which comes from the melt of the thinner lamellar crystal populations, can be obtained between these two endotherms. The metastable melt can recrystallize immediately just above the lower melting temperature and form slightly thicker lamellae than the original ones. The thickness and the perfection depend upon the crystallization time and the crystallization temperature. By comparing the TEM morphological observations of the samples before and after partial melting, it can be shown that lamellar crystals, having different thermodynamic stability, form during isothermal crystallization. After partial melting, only the type of lamellar crystal exhibiting the higher thermodynamic stability remains. Wide angle X-ray diffraction measurements shows a slightly change in the crystallinity of the samples before and after the partial melting. Small angle X-ray scattering results exhibit a change in the long period of the lamellar crystals before and after the partial melting process. The crystallization kinetics of the metastable melt can be determined by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic analysis showed that the isothermal crystallization of the metastable PEEK melt proceeds with an Avrami exponent of n = 1.0 similar to 1.4, reflecting that probably one-dimensional or an irregular line growth of the crystal occurred between the existing main lamellae with heterogeneous nucleation. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), under certain conditions, shows a crystal transition between the alpha (TGT (G) over bar) and beta (TTT) forms, where T, G, and (G) over bar, respectively, denote trans, gauche, and minus gauche. We investigated the mechanism of this crystal transition by FT-TR and X-ray diffraction, which yielded consistent results. We also carried out differential scanning calorimeter experiments.

Isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallization kinetics of a novel poly(aryl ether ketone), PEDEKK, were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Several kinetic analyses were used to describe the crystallization behavior. The activation energies were determined as 425 and 176 KJ/mol for isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. The equilibrium melting point T-m(o) was estimated to be 444 degrees C by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach. The observed crystallization characteristics of PEDEKK were compared with those of the other members of the poly(arpl ether ketone) family.

The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s with liquid crystallinity were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone with 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by DSC, PLM and WAXD, The copolymers containing 70% biphenol formed nematic phase while the copolymer containing 50% biphenol exhibited smectic texture, The banded textures were formed after shearing the sample in the nematic liquid crystalline state. The identification of the structures in each mesogenic phase has been carried out by combining WAXD with PLM and DSC.

Ring-banded spherulites in crystallization of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly (styrene-random-acrylonitrile) blends were observed with polarizing optical microscopy and digital image analysis technique was applied directly to the image obtained by polarizing microscope, Several new interesting phenomena were found. One is that the ring-banded structure is still clearly seen after the analyzer was removed and this astonished phenomenon couldn't result from the general concept about formation mechanism of ring-banded spherulite - lamellae twisting, Another one is that there is a slight, dark line in the bright band when cross polars were added, which may be related to the formation process and mechanism of ring-banded spherulites in the blends of poly (epsilon-caprolactone) and poly (styrene-random-acrylonitrile).

Novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of difluoromonomer with 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone. The results showed that the novel polymers exhibited multiple phase transitions and formed optical birefringence textures above their melting transitions.

Blends of chromophore-labeled LLDPE and chromophore-labeled PMMA compatibilized by block copolymer of hydrogenated polybutadiene and methyl methacrylate (PHB-b-PMMA) were studied by nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) technique. The ratio of fluorescence intensity of the donor at 336 nm and the acceptor at 408 nm (I-D/I-A) decreased with an increase in block copolymer content. At about 8 wt.-% block copolymer content I-D/I-A reached a minimum value, indicating the interdiffusion of LLDPE chains and PMMA chains in the interface is strongest. The influence of temperature on the interdiffusion of polymer chains in the interface was also examined. Samples quenched in liquid nitrogen from 140 degrees C showed lower energy transfer efficiencies than those annealed from 150 degrees C to room temperature.

Compatibilization of blends of polybutadiene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with butadiene-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. When the diblock copolymers are added to the blends, the size of PB particles decreases and their size distribution gets narrower. In PB/PMMA7.6K blends with P(B-b-MMA)25.2K as a compatibilizer, most of micelles exist in the PMMA phase. However, using P(B-b-MMA)38K as a compatibilizer, the micellar aggregation exists in PB particles besides that existing in the PMMA phase. The core of a micelle in the PMMA phase is about 10 nm. In this article the influences of temperature and homo-PMMA molecular weight on compatibilization were also examined. At a high temperature PB particles in blends tend to agglomerate into bigger particles. When the molecular weight of PMMA is close to that of the corresponding block of the copolymer, the best compatibilization result would be achieved. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Novel main chain poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing a lateral phenyl group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and phenylhydroquinone with either 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone or 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70mol% biphenol. Melting (T-m) and isotropization (T-i) transitions both appeared on the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline nematic state. As expected, each of the copolymers had a relatively lower melting transition than the biphenol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone)s because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer phenylhydroquinone.
