We report an in-fiber polarizer implemented using a 45° tilted FBG. Polarization extinction ratio of 28dB at 1550nm and HMFW over 80nm has been demonstrated. When the un-polarized light passes this device, 99.5% of degree of polarization can be achieved.

Single polarisation operation of fibre ring laser has been realised by employing an intracavity 45deg-tilted fibre Bragg grating (45deg-TFBG). The degree of polarisation up to 99.94% of the laser was demonstrated with good stability.

Widespread use of glass fibre reinforced cement (GRC) has been impeded by concerns over its durability. Three degradation mechanisms are proposed - fibre corrosion, Ca(OHh precipitation and matrix densification - although their relative importance is debated. Matrices with reduced alkalinities and Ca(OH)2 contents are being developed; the aim of this study was to investigate their hydration and interaction with alkali-resistant fibres to determine the factors controlling their long-term durability, and assess the relevancy of accelerated ageing. The matrices studied were: OPC/calcium-sulphoaluminate cement plus metakaolin (C); OPC plus metakaolin (M); blast-furnace slag cement plus a micro-silica based additive (D); and OPC (O). Accelerated ageing included hot water and cyclic regimes prior to tensile testing. Investigations included pore solution expression, XRD, DTA/TG, SEM and optical petrography. Bond strength was determined from crack spacings using microstructural parameters obtained from a unique image analysis technique. It was found that, for the new matrices - pore solution alkalinities were lower; Ca(OH)2 was absent or quickly consumed; different hydrates were formed at higher immersion temperatures; degradation under 65°C immersion was an order of magnitude slower, and no interfilamental Ca(OH)2 was observed .It was concluded that: fibre weakening caused by flaw growth was the primary degradation mechanism and was successfully modelled on stress corrosion/static fatigue principles. OPC inferiority was attributed partly to its higher alkalinity but chiefly to the growth of Ca(OH)2 aggravating the degradation; and hot water ageing although useful in model formulation and contrasting the matrices, changed the intrinsic nature of the composites rather than simply accelerating the degradation mechanisms.

We introduce a novel transmission technique of periodic in-line all-optical format conversion between return-to-zero and non-return-to-zero-like aimed at delaying the accumulation of format-specific impairments. A particular realization of this approach using in-line normal dispersion fibre-enhanced nonlinear optical loop mirrors at 40Gbit/s data rate is presented. © 2004 Optical Society of America.

We propose a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a V-shaped dispersion profile. We demonstrate that such V-shaped FBGs bring advantages in manipulation of optical signals compared to conventional FBGs with a constant dispersion, e.g., they can produce larger chirp for the same input pulsewidth and/or can be used as pulse shapers. Application of the proposed V-shaped FBGs for signal prechirping in fiber transmission is examined. The proposed design of the V-shaped FBG can be easily extended to embrace multichannel devices.

We develop a perturbation analysis that describes the effect of third-order dispersion on the similariton pulse solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in a fibre gain medium. The theoretical model predicts with sufficient accuracy the pulse structural changes induced, which are observed through direct numerical simulations.

The development of new all-optical technologies for data processing and signal manipulation is a field of growing importance with a strong potential for numerous applications in diverse areas of modern science. Nonlinear phenomena occurring in optical fibres have many attractive features and great, but not yet fully explored, potential in signal processing. Here, we review recent progress on the use of fibre nonlinearities for the generation and shaping of optical pulses and on the applications of advanced pulse shapes in all-optical signal processing. Amongst other topics, we will discuss ultrahigh repetition rate pulse sources, the generation of parabolic shaped pulses in active and passive fibres, the generation of pulses with triangular temporal profiles, and coherent supercontinuum sources. The signal processing applications will span optical regeneration, linear distortion compensation, optical decision at the receiver in optical communication systems, spectral and temporal signal doubling, and frequency conversion. © Copyright 2012 Sonia Boscolo and Christophe Finot.

In this scheme, nonlinearity and dispersion in the NDF lead to various reshaping processes of an initial, conventional pulse according to the chirping value and power level at the input of the fibre. In particular, we have observed that triangular-shaped pulses can be generated for sufficiently high energies and a positive initial chirp parameter. In our experiments, 2.8 ps-FWHM, transform-limited pulses generated from a mode-locked fibre laser source at a repetition rate of 1.25 GHz were pre-chirped by propagating the pulses through different lengths of standard mono-mode fibre. The chirped pulses were then amplified to different power levels before being launched into a 2.3 km section of True Wave fibre (TWF). The corresponding numerically calculated pulse temporal intensity profile and numerical and experimental second-harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating (SHG FROG) spectrograms were also derived. In conclusion, we have presented numerical modelling results which show the system design parameters required for the generation of triangular-shaped pulses in a nonlinear NDF, and experimentally demonstrated triangular pulse shaping in conventional NDF.

In this first talk on dissipative structures in fiber applications, we extend theory of dispersion-managed solitons to dissipative systems with a focus on mode-locked fibre lasers. Dissipative structures exist at high map strengths leading to the generation of stable, short pulses with high energy. Two types of intra-map pulse evolutions are observed depending on the net cavity dispersion. These are characterized by a reduced model and semi-analytical solutions are obtained.
