Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of curing time and power on the degree of conversion and surface microhardness of 3 orthodontic composites. Methods: One hundred eighty discs, 6 mm in diameter, were divided into 3 groups of 60 samples according to the composite used-Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif), Opal Bond MV (Ultradent, South Jordan, Utah), and Transbond Plus Color Change (3M Unitek)-and each group was further divided into 3 subgroups (n = 20). Five samples were used to measure conversion, and 15 were used to measure microhardness. A light-emitting diode curing unit with multiwavelength emission of broad light was used for curing at 3 power levels (530, 760, and 1520 mW) and 3 times (8.5, 6, and 3 seconds), always totaling 4.56 joules. Five specimens from each subgroup were ground and mixed with potassium bromide to produce 8-mm tablets to be compared with 5 others made similarly with the respective noncured composite. These were placed into a spectrometer, and software was used for analysis. A microhardness tester was used to take Knoop hardness (KHN) measurements in 15 discs of each subgroup. The data were analyzed with 2 analysis of variance tests at 2 levels. Results: Differences were found in the conversion degree of the composites cured at different times and powers (P < 0.01). The composites showed similar degrees of conversion when light cured at 8.5 seconds (80.7%) and 6 seconds (79.0%), but not at 3 seconds (75.0%). The conversion degrees of the composites were different, with group 3 (87.2%) higher than group 2 (83.5%), which was higher than group 1 (64.0%). Differences in microhardness were also found (P < 0.01), with lower microhardness at 8.5 seconds (35.2 KHN), but no difference was observed between 6 seconds (41.6 KHN) and 3 seconds (42.8 KHN). Group 3 had the highest surface microhardness (35.9 KHN) compared with group 2 (33.7 KHN) and group 1 (30.0 KHN). Conclusions: Curing time can be reduced up to 6 seconds by increasing the power, with a slight decrease in the degree of conversion at 3 seconds; the decrease has a positive effect on the surface microhardness.

Mejillonesite, ideally NaMg(2)(PO(3)OH)(PO(4))(OH)center dot H(5)O(2), is a new mineral approved by the CNMNC (IMA 2010-068). It occurs as isolated crystal aggregates in thin zones in fine-grained opal-zeolite aggregate on the north slope of Cerro Mejillones, Antofagasta, Chile. Closely associated minerals are bobierrite, opal, clinoptilolite-Na, clinoptilolite-K, and gypsum. Mejillonesite forms orthorhombic, prismatic, and elongated thick tabular crystals up to 6 mm long, usually intergrown in radiating aggregates. The dominant form is pinacoid {100}. Prisms {hk0}, {h0l}, and {0kl} are also observed. The crystals are colorless, their streak is white, and the luster is vitreous. The mineral is transparent. It is non-fluorescent under ultraviolet light. Mohs' hardness is 4, tenacity is brittle. Cleavage is perfect on {100}, good on {010} and {001}, and fracture is stepped. The measured density is 2.36(1) g/cm(3); the calculated density is 2.367 g/cm(3). Mejillonesite is biaxial (-), alpha= 1.507(2), beta= 1.531(2), gamma= 1.531(2), 2V(meas) = 15(10)degrees, 2V(calc) = 0 degrees (589 nm). Orientation is X= a, Z= elongation direction. The mineral is non-pleochroic. Dispersion is r> v, medium. The IR spectrum contains characteristic bands of the Zundel cation (H(5)O(2)(+), or H(+)center dot 2H(2)O) and the groups P-OH and OH(-). The chemical composition is (by EDS, H(2)O by the Alimarin method, wt%): Na(2)O 9.19, MgO 26.82, P(2)O(5) 46.87, H(2)O 19, total 101.88. The empirical formula, based on 11 oxygen atoms, is Na(0.93)Mg(2.08)(PO(3)OH)(1.00) (PO(4)) (OH)(0.86) .0.95H(5)O(2) The strongest eight X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in angstrom(I)(hkl)] are: 8.095(100)(200), 6.846(9) (210), 6.470(8)(111), 3.317(5)(302), 2.959(5)(132), 2.706(12)(113), 2.157(19)(333), and 2.153(9) (622). The crystal structure was solved on a single crystal (R = 0.055) and gave the following data: orthorhombic, Pbca, a = 16.295(1), b = 13.009(2), c = 8.434(1) angstrom, V= 1787.9(4) angstrom(3), Z = 8. The crystal structure of mejillonesite is based on a sheet (parallel to the b-c plane) formed by two types of MgO(6) octahedra, isolated tetrahedra PO(4) and PO(3)OH whose apical vertices have different orientation with respect to the sheet. The sheets are connected by interlayer, 5-coordinated sodium ions, proton hydration complexes, and hydroxyl groups. The structure of mejillonesite is related to that of angarfite, NaFe(5)(3+)(PO(4))(4)(OH)(4).4H(2)O and bakhchisaraitsevite, Na(2)Mg(5)(PO(4))(4)center dot 7H(2)O.

Numerous studies use major element concentrations measured on continental margin sediments to reconstruct terrestrial climate variations. The choice and interpretation of climate proxies however differ from site to site. Here we map the concentrations of major elements (Ca, Fe, Al, Si, Ti, K) in Atlantic surface sediments (36 degrees N-49 degrees S) to assess the factors influencing the geochemistry of Atlantic hemipelagic sediments and the potential of elemental ratios to reconstruct different terrestrial climate regimes. High concentrations of terrigenous elements and low Ca concentrations along the African and South American margins reflect the dominance of terrigenous input in these regions. Single element concentrations and elemental ratios including Ca (e. g., Fe/Ca) are too sensitive to dilution effects (enhanced biological productivity, carbonate dissolution) to allow reliable reconstructions of terrestrial climate. Other elemental ratios reflect the composition of terrigenous material and mirror the climatic conditions within the continental catchment areas. The Atlantic distribution of Ti/Al supports its use as a proxy for eolian versus fluvial input in regions of dust deposition that are not affected by the input of mafic rock material. The spatial distributions of Al/Si and Fe/K reflect the relative input of intensively weathered material from humid regions versus slightly weathered particles from drier areas. High biogenic opal input however influences the Al/Si ratio. Fe/K is sensitive to the input of mafic material and the topography of Andean river drainage basins. Both ratios are suitable to reconstruct African and South American climatic zones characterized by different intensities of chemical weathering in well-understood environmental settings.

AbstractIn this thesis t-BOC and methacrylate functionalisedoligothiophenes with 3 5 thiophene units where synthesizedby Stille coupling. The material was structured by methodslike stamping and photolithography. The polymerizability of the methacrylates was proved by thepolymerization in solution with AIBN and subsequent analysisby gel permeation chromatography and differential scanningcalorimetry. The conductivities of the doped polymer filmswere in the range published for oligothiophenes. The optical and electrochemical properties of the compoundswere measured and compared to known compounds. The cleavage of the t-BOC groups was followed bythermogravimetry and infrared spectroscopy. The cleavagetemperature can be lowered by up to 100 °C by the use ofphoto acid generators. The cleavage is complete after 2hours annealing. The methacrylates were structured by microinjection mouldingin capillaries (MIMIC), stamping with soft silicone moulds, filling of patterned substrates and preperation of an opalreplica. By MIMIC line patterns with 5- 50 µm line widthswere obtained. The stamping succeeded in structures with 500nm line width only, on which liquid crystals wereorientated. This shows the possible application asorientation layers in LEDs with polarized emission. Withsilica opal templates the three-dimensional structuring ofthe oligomers succeeded. In this present work high quality PMMA opals with different sphere sizes, silica opals from large size spheres, multilayer opals, and inverse opals were fabricated. Highly monodisperse PMMA spheres were synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (polydispersity ~2%). Large-area and well-ordered PMMA crystalline films with a homogenous thickness were produced by the vertical deposition method using a drawing device. Optical experiments have confirmed the high quality of these PMMA photonic crystals, e.g., well resolved high-energy bands of the transmission and reflectance spectra of the opaline films were observed. For fabrication of high quality opaline photonic crystals from large silica spheres (diameter of 890 nm), self-assembled in patterned Si-substrates a novel technique has been developed, in which the crystallization was performed by using a drawing apparatus in combination with stirring. The achievements comprise a spatial selectivity of opal crystallization without special treatment of the wafer surface, the opal lattice was found to match the pattern precisely in width as well as depth, particularly an absence of cracks within the size of the trenches, and finally a good three-dimensional order of the opal lattice even in trenches with a complex confined geometry. Multilayer opals from opaline films with different sphere sizes or different materials were produced by sequential crystallization procedure. Studies of the transmission in triple-layer hetero-opal revealed that its optical properties cannot only be considered as the linear superposition of two independent photonic bandgaps. The remarkable interface effect is the narrowing of the transmission minima. Large-area, high-quality, and robust photonic opal replicas from silicate-based inorganic-organic hybrid polymers (ORMOCER® s) were prepared by using the template-directed method, in which a high quality PMMA opal template was infiltrated with a neat inorganic-organic ORMOCER® oligomer, which can be photopolymerized within the opaline voids leading to a fully-developed replica structure with a filling factor of nearly 100%. This opal replica is structurally homogeneous, thermally and mechanically stable and the large scale (cm2 size) replica films can be handled easily as free films with a pair of tweezers.
