In the frame of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, arrays of magnetically coupled resonators have received increasing attention as they are cheap and versatile due to their simple structure. They consist of magnetically coupled coils, which resonate with their self-capacitance or lumped capacitive networks. Of great industrial interest are planar resonator arrays used to power a receiver that can be placed at any position above the array. A thorough circuit analysis has been carried out, first starting from traditional two-coil IPT devices. Then, resonator arrays have been introduced, with particular attention to the case of arrays with a receiver. To evaluate the system performance, a circuit model based on original analytical formulas has been developed and experimentally validated. The results of the analysis also led to the definition of a new doubly-fed array configuration with a receiver that can be placed above it at any position. A suitable control strategy aimed at maximising the transmitted power and the efficiency has been also proposed. The study of the array currents has been carried out resorting to the theory of magneto-inductive waves, allowing useful insight to be highlighted. The analysis has been completed with a numerical and experimental study on the magnetic field distribution originating from the array. Furthermore, an application of the resonator array as a position sensor has been investigated. The position of the receiver is estimated through the measurement of the array input impedance, for which an original analytical expression has been also obtained. The application of this sensing technique in an automotive dynamic IPT system has been discussed. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of the possible applications of two-dimensional resonator arrays in IPT systems. These devices can be used to improve system efficiency and transmitted power, as well as for magnetic field shielding.

I vantaggi dell’Industria 4.0 hanno stravolto il manufacturing. Ma cosa vuol dire "Industria 4.0"? Essa è la nuova frontiera del manufacturing, basata su princìpi che seguono i passi avanti dei sistemi IT e della tecnologia. Dunque, i suoi pilastri sono: integrazione, verticale e orizzontale, digitalizzazione e automazione. L’Industria 4.0 coinvolge molte aree della supply chain, dai flussi informativi alla logistica. In essa e nell’intralogistica, la priorità è sviluppare dei sistemi di material handling flessibili, automatizzati e con alta prontezza di risposta. Il modello ideale è autonomo, in cui i veicoli fanno parte di una flotta le cui decisioni sono rese decentralizzate grazie all'alta connettività e alla loro abilità di collezionare dati e scambiarli rapidamente nel cloud aziendale.Tutto ciò non sarebbe raggiungibile se ci si affidasse a un comune sistema di trasporto AGV, troppo rigido e centralizzato. La tesi si focalizza su un tipo di material handlers più flessibile e intelligente: gli Autonomous Mobile Robots. Grazie alla loro intelligenza artificiale e alla digitalizzazione degli scambi di informazioni, interagiscono con l’ambiente per evitare ostacoli e calcolare il percorso ottimale. Gli scenari dell’ambiente lavorativo determinano perdite di tempo nel tragitto dei robot e sono queste che dovremo studiare. Nella tesi, i vantaggi apportati dagli AMR, come la loro decentralizzazione delle decisioni, saranno introdotti mediante una literature review e poi l’attenzione verterà sull’analisi di ogni scenario di lavoro. Fondamentali sono state le esperienze nel Logistics 4.0 Lab di NTNU, per ricreare fisicamente alcuni scenari. Inoltre, il software AnyLogic sarà usato per riprodurre e simulare tutti gli scenari rilevanti. I risultati delle simulazioni verranno infine usati per creare un modello che associ ad ogni scenario rilevante una perdita di tempo, attraverso una funzione. Per questo saranno usati software di data analysis come Minitab e MatLab.

The current environmental and socio-economic situation promotes the development of carbon-neutral and sustainable solutions for energy supply. In this framework, the use of hydrogen has been largely indicated as a promising alternative. However, safety aspects are of concern for storage and transportation technologies. Indeed, the current know-how promotes its transportation via pipeline as compressed gas. However, the peculiar properties of hydrogen make the selection of suitable materials challenging. For these reasons, dilution with less reactive species has been considered a short and medium solution. As a way of example, methane-hydrogen mixtures are currently transported via pipelines. In this case, the hydrogen content is limited to 20% in volume, thus keeping the dependence on natural gas sources. On the contrary, hydrogen can be conveniently transported by mixing it with carbon dioxide deriving from carbon capture and storage technologies. In this sense, the interactions between hydrogen and carbon dioxide have been poorly studied. In particular, the effects of composition and operative conditions in the case of accidental release or for direct use in the energy supply chain are unknown. For these reasons, the present work was devoted to the characterization of the chemical phenomena ruling the system. To this aim, laminar flames containing hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the air were investigated experimentally and numerically. Different detailed kinetic mechanisms largely validated were considered at this stage. Significant discrepancies were observed among numerical and experimental data, especially once a fuel consisting of 40%v of hydrogen was studied. This deviation was attributed to the formation of a cellular flame increasing the overall reactivity. Hence, this observation suggests the need for combined models accounting for peculiar physical phenomena and detailed kinetic mechanisms characterizing the hydrogen-containing flames.

The benzoquinone was found as an effective co-catalyst in the ruthenium/NaOEt-catalyzed Guerbet reaction. The co-catalyst behavior has therefore been investigated through experimental and computational methods. The reaction products distribution shows that the reaction speed is improved by the benzoquinone supplement since the beginning of the process, having a minimal effect on the selectivity toward alcoholic species. DFT calculations were performed to investigate two hypotheses for the kinetic effects: i) a hydrogen storage mechanism or ii) a basic co-catalysis of 4-hydroxiphenolate. The most promising results were found for the latter hypothesis, where a new mixed mechanism for the aldol condensation step of the Guerbet process involves the hydroquinone (i.e. the reduced form of benzoquinone) as proton source instead of ethanol. This mechanism was found to be energetically more favorable than an aldol condensation in absence of additive, suggesting that the hydroquinone derived from benzoquinone could be the key species affecting the kinetics of the overall process. To verify this theoretical hypothesis, new phenol derivatives were tested as additives in the Guerbet reaction. The outcomes confirmed that an aromatic acid (stronger than ethanol) could improve the reaction kinetics. Lastly, theoretical products distributions were simulated and compared to the experimental one, using the DFT computations to build the kinetic models.

This work approaches the forced air cooling of strawberry by numerical simulation. The mathematical model that was used describes the process of heat transfer, based on the Fourier's law, in spherical coordinates and simplified to describe the one-dimensional process. For the resolution of the equation expressed for the mathematical model, an algorithm was developed based on the explicit scheme of the numerical method of the finite differences and implemented in the scientific computation program MATLAB 6.1. The validation of the mathematical model was made by the comparison between theoretical and experimental data, where strawberries had been cooled with forced air. The results showed to be possible the determination of the convective heat transfer coefficient by fitting the numerical and experimental data. The methodology of the numerical simulations was showed like a promising tool in the support of the decision to use or to develop equipment in the area of cooling process with forced air of spherical fruits.

In Brazil, the study of pedestrian-induced vibration on footbridges has been undertaken since the early 1990s, for concrete and steel footbridges. However, there are no recorded studies of this kind for timber footbridges. Brazilian code ABNT NBR 7190 (1997) gives design requirements only for static loads in the case of timber footbridges, without considering the serviceability limit state from pedestrian-induced vibrations. The aim of this work is to perform a theoretical dynamic, numerical and experimental analysis on simply-supported timber footbridges, by using a small-scale model developed from a 24 m span and 2 m width timber footbridge, with two main timber beams. Span and width were scaled down (1:4) to 6 m e 0.5 in, respectively. Among the conclusions reached herein, it is emphasized that the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is suitable for calculating the vertical and lateral first natural frequencies in simply-supported timber footbridges; however, special attention should be given to the evaluation of lateral bending stiffness, as it leads to conservative values.

In this work a fourth-order Chua`s circuit, capable of generating hyperchaotic oscillations in a wide range of parameters, is presented. The circuit is obtained by adding two new branches to the original topology of the Chua`s double scroll circuit. One of the added branches is a linear inductor-resistor series connection, and the other one is a nonlinear voltage-controlled current source. A theoretical analysis of the circuit equations is presented, along with numerical and experimental results.

A simple procedure to measure the cohesive laws of bonded joints under mode I loading using the double cantilever beam test is proposed. The method only requires recording the applied load–displacement data and measuring the crack opening displacement at its tip in the course of the experimental test. The strain energy release rate is obtained by a procedure involving the Timoshenko beam theory, the specimen’s compliance and the crack equivalent concept. Following the proposed approach the influence of the fracture process zone is taken into account which is fundamental for an accurate estimation of the failure process details. The cohesive law is obtained by differentiation of the strain energy release rate as a function of the crack opening displacement. The model was validated numerically considering three representative cohesive laws. Numerical simulations using finite element analysis including cohesive zone modeling were performed. The good agreement between the inputted and resulting laws for all the cases considered validates the model. An experimental confirmation was also performed by comparing the numerical and experimental load–displacement curves. The numerical load–displacement curves were obtained by adjusting typical cohesive laws to the ones measured experimentally following the proposed approach and using finite element analysis including cohesive zone modeling. Once again, good agreement was obtained in the comparisons thus demonstrating the good performance of the proposed methodology.

Adhesive bonding of components has become more efficient in recent years due to the developments in adhesive technology, which has resulted in higher peel and shear strengths, and also in allowable ductility up to failure. As a result, fastening and riveting methods are being progressively replaced by adhesive bonding, allowing a big step towards stronger and lighter unions. However, single-lap bonded joints still generate substantial peel and shear stress concentrations at the overlap edges that can be harmful to the structure, especially when using brittle adhesives that do not allow plasticization in these regions. In this work, a numerical and experimental study is performed to evaluate the feasibility of bending the adherends at the ends of the overlap for the strength improvement of single-lap aluminium joints bonded with a brittle and a ductile adhesive. Different combinations of joint eccentricity were tested, including absence of eccentricity, allowing the optimization of the joint. A Finite Element stress and failure analysis in ABAQUS® was also carried out to provide a better understanding of the bent configuration. Results showed a major advantage of using the proposed modification for the brittle adhesive, but the joints with the ductile adhesive were not much affected by the bending technique.

Com o atual estado da construção em Portugal, a reabilitação urbana é uma realidade. Com muitos dos edifícios a necessitarem de reforço, procurou-se abordar o comportamento real das estruturas, indo além da típica análise linear elástica. Desta forma, pretendeu-se aumentar o conhecimento acerca da modelação numérica não-linear de estruturas de betão armado, expondo modelos de cálculo relativamente simples e de fácil compreensão, com o objetivo de servir de base a uma avaliação da capacidade de carga de um elemento estrutural. O modelo de cálculo foi validado com recurso ao trabalho experimental de Bresler e Scordelis (1963). Analisou-se o comportamento até à rotura de três vigas ensaiadas à flexão. Posteriormente, foi realizado um estudo paramétrico de algumas propriedades do betão com vista à discussão do melhor de ajuste. Em seguida, já no campo do reforço estrutural, simulou-se numericamente vigas reforçadas com CFRP, com recurso à técnica EBR e NSM. Comparam-se os resultados numéricos com os ensaios experimentais de Cruz et al. (2011a). Avaliou-se ainda o desempenho de soluções alternativas com variações na área e comprimento dos laminados. Para finalizar, foi desenvolvida uma campanha experimental com diferentes áreas de reforço. Conceberam-se e executaram-se três vigas de betão armado sobre as quais se instalaram laminados de CFRP. Os resultados experimentais são apresentados e discutidos à luz dos resultados do respetivo modelo numérico. No cômputo geral, o presente trabalho permitiu aferir a validade de modelos não-lineares na previsão do comportamento efetivo das estruturas até à rotura. Assinala-se a concordância em vários resultados experimentais analisados. Ficaram também patentes os principais fenómenos ligados ao reforço de vigas com CFRP, focados nos respetivos modelos de cálculo e nos resultados experimentais apresentados.

Composite materials have a complex behavior, which is difficult to predict under different types of loads. In the course of this dissertation a methodology was developed to predict failure and damage propagation of composite material specimens. This methodology uses finite element numerical models created with Ansys and Matlab softwares. The methodology is able to perform an incremental-iterative analysis, which increases, gradually, the load applied to the specimen. Several structural failure phenomena are considered, such as fiber and/or matrix failure, delamination or shear plasticity. Failure criteria based on element stresses were implemented and a procedure to reduce the stiffness of the failed elements was prepared. The material used in this dissertation consist of a spread tow carbon fabric with a 0°/90° arrangement and the main numerical model analyzed is a 26-plies specimen under compression loads. Numerical results were compared with the results of specimens tested experimentally, whose mechanical properties are unknown, knowing only the geometry of the specimen. The material properties of the numerical model were adjusted in the course of this dissertation, in order to find the lowest difference between the numerical and experimental results with an error lower than 5% (it was performed the numerical model identification based on the experimental results).

A conventional method for seismic strengthening of masonry walls is externally application of reinforced concrete layer (shotcrete). However, due to the lack of analytical and experimental information on the behavior of strengthened walls, the design procedures are usually followed based on the empirical relations. Using these design procedures have resulted in massive strengthening details in retrofitting projects. This paper presents a computational framework for nonlinear analysis of strengthened masonry walls and its versatility has been verified by comparing the numerical and experimental results. Based on the developed numerical model and available experimental information, design relations and failure modes are proposed for strengthened walls in accordance with the ASCE 41 standard. Finally, a sample masonry structure has been strengthened using the proposed and available conventional methods. It has been shown that using the proposed method results in lower strengthening details and appropriate (ductile) failure modes

Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) have been extensively used for externally bonded reinforcement of masonry structures during the last years. Available information shows that FRPs can significantly improve the seismic performance of masonry elements without altering their structural mass. However, the durability and long-term performance of the strengthened elements are not clearly known yet. Recent experimental results show that environmental conditions can lead to degradation of the bond between FRP and masonry and FRP delaminations. But the effect of these local degradation mechanisms on the global structural response is not studied yet. This paper is therefore aimed at numerically investigating the effect of environmental degradation on the global performance of strengthened masonry walls. The nonlinear behavior of masonry walls strengthened with FRP composites is initially simulated with the aim of a FE package. The adopted numerical modeling strategy is verified by comparison of numerical and experimental results. The model, once validated, is used for investigating the effect of materials and bond degradation on the global behavior and failure modes of strengthened walls. The effect of strengthening scheme on the long-term performance of strengthened walls is also investigated. The degradation data are taken from experimental tests previously performed by the authors. The numerical results show that the effect of local material degradation on the global response of strengthened walls depends on the strengthening schemes, and severity of the environmental conditions. Moreover, environmental induced degradations and FRP delaminations can lead to change of expected failure modes in the strengthened elements. These observations, that are usually neglected at the design stage, can be critical in the long-term performance of strengthened structures.
