The Upper Newlands Seam in the northern Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia consists of six benches (A-F) that have different petrographic assemblages. Benches C and E contain relatively abundant inertodetrinite and mineral matter, as well as anomalously high reflectance values; these characteristics support a largely allochthonous, detrital origin for the C and E benches. Fractures and cleats in the seam show a consistent orientation of northeast- southwest for face cleats, and a wide range of orientations for fractures. Cleat systems are well developed in bright bands, with poor continuity in the dull coal. Both maceral content and cleat character are suggested to influence gas drainage in the Upper Newlands Seam. A pronounced positive correlation between vitrinite abundance and gas desorption data suggests more efficient drainage from benches with abundant vitrinite. Conversely, inertinite-rich benches are suggested to have less efficient drainage, and possibly retain gas within pore spaces, which could increase the outburst potential of the coal. Considering the increase in esthetic restorative materials and need for improvement in unsatisfactory restoration substitution with minimal inadvertent removal of healthy tissues, this study assessed the efficacy of erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser for composite resin removal and the influence of pulse repetition rate on the morphological analyses of the cavity by scanning electron microscope. Composite resin fillings were placed in cavities (1.0 mm deep) prepared in bovine teeth, and the 75 specimens were randomly assigned to five groups according to the technique used for composite filling removal (high-speed diamond bur, group I, as a control, and Er:YAG laser, 250 mJ output energy and 80 J/cm(2) energy density, using different pulse repetition rates: group II, 2 Hz; group III, 4 Hz; group IV, 6 Hz; group V, 10 Hz). After the removal, the specimens were split in the middle, and we analyzed the surrounding and deep walls to check for the presence of restorative material. The estimation was qualitative. The surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope. The results revealed that the experimental groups presented bigger amounts of remaining restorative material. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses showed irregularities of the resultant cavities of the experimental groups that increased proportionally with increase in repetition rate.

To evaluate several protocols for the application of ultrasound during removal of cast posts with varying core configurations cemented with zinc phosphate. Sixty maxillary canines were distributed into three groups (n = 20): group 1 - core with 5 mm diameter/height and post diameter of 1.3 mm; groups 2 and 3 - core with the same diameter as the post (1.3 mm) and heights of 5 mm and 3 mm, respectively. Posts/cores were cemented using a standard technique with zinc phosphate cement. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the ultrasonic vibration mode: point vibration - ultrasonic vibration applied to the core surface for 5 s, on each face totalling 25 s; alternate vibration - intermittent application of ultrasonic vibration for 10 s to the labial and lingual surfaces, 10 s to the mesial and distal surfaces and 5 s to the incisal surface, totalling 25 s. The specimens were submitted to the tensile test using an Instron machine (1 mm min(-1)) and results were analysed by anova and t-test. The failure type was also analysed. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between groups relating to the core preparations (P < 0.05). The lowest mean values of traction force were obtained for group 3 (46.1 +/- 7.7 N), followed by group 2 (89.0 +/- 2.7 N) and group 1 (160.4 +/- 7.5 N). Regarding ultrasonic vibration, the lowest mean was observed with alternate vibration (81.1 +/- 10.1 N), which was significantly lower than the point vibration (115.9 +/- 9.5 N) (P < 0.05). Cohesive failure occurred in all cases. A reduction in core diameter/height and intermittent ultrasonic application improved the removal of cast posts cemented with zinc phosphate.

Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of calcium ions and smear layer removal by using root canal chelators according to flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscopy. Forty-two human maxillary central incisors were irrigated with 15% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 10% citric acid, 10% sodium citrate, apple vinegar, 5% acetic acid, 5% malic acid, and sodium hypochlorite. The concentration of calcium ions was measured by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, and smear layer removal was determined by scanning electron microscopy. Mean +/- standard deviation, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey-Kramer, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, and kappa tests were used for statistical analysis. The use of 15% EDTA resulted in the greatest concentration of calcium ions followed by 10% citric acid; 15% EDTA and 10% citric acid were the most efficient solutions for removal of smear layer. The technique of in situ leach (ISL) uranium mining is well established in the USA, as well as being used extensively in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The method is being proposed and tested on uranium deposits in Australia, with sulfuric acid chemistry and no restoration of groundwater following mining. Test sites in the USA were required to restore groundwater to ascertain the extent of impacts and compare costs to alkaline ISL mines. The problems encountered include expensive and difficult restoration, gypsum precipitation, higher salinity and some heavy metals and radionuclides after restoration. One of the most critical issues is whether natural attenuation is capable of restoring groundwater quality and geochemical conditions in an acid leached aquifer zone. The history of acid ISL sites in the USA and Australia are presented in this study, with a particular focus on the demonstration of restoration of groundwater impacts.

The technique of in situ leach (ISL) uranium mining is well established in the USA, as well as being used extensively in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The method is being proposed and tested on uranium deposits in Australia, with sulphuric acid chemistry and no restoration of groundwater following mining. ISL mines in the former Soviet Union generally used acid reagents and were operated without due consideration given to environmental protection. At many former mine sites, the extent of groundwater contamination is significant because of high salinity, heavy metal and radionuclide concentrations compared with pre-mining and changes in the hydrogeological regime caused by mining. After the political collapse of the Soviet Union by the early 1990s, most uranium mines were shut down or ordered to be phased out by government policy. Programmes of restoration are now being undertaken but are proving technically difficult and hampered by a lack of adequate financial resources. The history and problems of acid ISL sites in countries of the former Soviet Union and Asia are presented in this study.

The batch removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(Vl)) from wastewater under different experimental conditions using economic adsorbents was investigated in this study. These adsorbents were produced from the pyrolysis and activation of the waste tyres (TAC) and from the pyrolysis of sawdust (SPC). The performance of these adsorbents against commercial activated carbon F400 (CAC) has also been carried out. The removal was favoured at low pH, with maximum removal at pH = 2 for all types of carbon. The effects of concentration, temperature and particle size have been reported. All sorbents were found to efficiently remove Cr(VI) from solution. The batch sorption kinetics have been tested for a first-order reversible reaction, a first-order and second-order reaction. The rate constants of adsorption for all these kinetic models have been calculated. The applicability of the Langmuir isotherm for the present system has been tested at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters (AGO, K,) obtained indicate the endothermic nature of Cr(Vl) adsorption on TAC, SPC and CAC. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A model has been developed which enables the viscosities of coal ash slags to be predicted as a function of composition and temperature under reducing conditions. The model describes both completely liquid and heterogeneous, i.e. partly crystallised, slags in the Al2O3-CaO-'FeO'-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic iron. The Urbain formalism has been modified to describe the viscosities of the liquid slag phase over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. The computer package F * A * C * T was used to predict the proportions of solids and the compositions of the remaining liquid phases. The Roscoe equation has been used to describe the effect of presence of solid suspension (slurry effect) on the viscosity of partly crystallised slag systems. The model provides a good description of the experimental data of fully liquid, and liquid + solids mixtures, over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. This model can now be used for viscosity predictions in industrial slag systems. Examples of the application of the new model to coal ash fluxing and blending are given in the paper. To predict the combustion performance in pulverized coal-fired boilers, this paper examines existing indices and develops a maceral index (MI). These indices were compared with the data of 68 coals and blends in a range of the mean vitrinite reflectance from 0.25 to 1.63. The results showed that the fuel ratio and the mean vitrinite reflectance could qualitatively indicate the burnout of the coals and blends. The new MI, MI = L + V/R-2/I-1.25(HV/30)(2.5), provides a useful correlation for the burnout of the coals and blends. The correlation coefficient (I-) is 0.982 for the EER data, and 0.808 for the ACIRL data. The MI also has potential to correlate ignition and flame stability of the coals and blends. The ventilation and cooling of deep, hot mines present particular problems in Australia as a consequence of the surface climate, the size of the underground voids, the degree of mechanization and the cost of power in remote areas. A preliminary investigation of the effects of controlled partial recirculation of air was conducted in Mount Isa Mines' Deep Copper section. Gas and dust concentrations were measured in the exhaust air of the major working section to assess the potential for recirculating exhaust air to the intake airways to reduce the cost of providing an acceptable working environment in the deep parts of the mine. Studies were undertaken of airborne dust deposition in vertical airways and the efficiency of usage of the ventilation air in diluting contaminants. It was established that 45% of the respirable dust was deposited in a 130-m vertical raise and 60% of the air supplied to the section could be reused or recirculated. The first major field trial of a controlled partial recirculation system in Australia was undertaken in the light of these results and demonstrated excellent potential for significant reduction in ventilation costs. Gas and dust contaminant levels were well below the threshold limit values during the trial. It is concluded that controlled partial recirculation can be a practical, effective and safe aid to normal ventilation practice in Australian deep, hot mines.

Pulverised New Zealand coal samples have been tested from an initial temperature of 40 degreesC and reacted adiabatisally in an oven with oxygen to provide a full temperature history of auto-oxidation up to the self-sustained process of combustion. This procedure produces a self-heating rate index, R-70, calculated as the ratio of the time taken to reach 70 degreesC (degreesC/h). The R-70 index is a measure of the coal's propensity to spontaneous combustion. R-70 values for New Zealand coals are much higher than any previously published results. They show a rank dependence, whereby subbituminous coals have the highest propensity to spontaneous combustion (14.91-17.23 degreesC/h). A lignite sample has an R-70 value of 7.76 degreesC/h, and high-volatile bituminous B coals have R-70 values of 0.31-2.23 degreesC/h. Samples stored for 2 years show the same rank trend. The nature of this trend is most likely a function of the internal surface area of the coal that governs the available sites for oxidation. Calculating the Suggate rank; for any New Zealand coal can be used to rare its propensity to spontaneous combustion. Resin bodies in the subbituminous coal show no propensity to spontaneous combustion. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
