For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a radially polarized laser pulse was produced from a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG ceramic microchip laser with a piece of Cr4+:YAG crystal as the saturable absorber and multilayer concentric subwavelength grating as the polarization-selective output coupler. The averaged laser power reached 450 mW with a slope efficiency of 30.2%. The laser pulse had a maximum peak power of 759 W, a minimum pulse duration of 86 ns, and a 6.7 kHz repetition rate at 3.7 W absorbed pump power. The polarization degree of the radially polarized pulse was measured to be as high as 97.4%. Such a radially polarized laser pulse with a high peak power and a short width is important to numerous applications such as metal cutting. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

A new coupled fixed point theorem related to the Pata contraction for mappings having the mixed monotone property in partially ordered complete metric spaces is established. It is shown that the coupled fixed point can be unique under some extra suitable conditions involving mid point lower or upper bound properties. Also the corresponding convergence rate is estimated when the iterates of our function converge to its coupled fixed point.

The impact response of laminated composites consisting of alternate layers of AI ahoy foam and Al2O3 was studied experimentally in low and intermediate velocity regimes. Low velocity impacts (1.2-2.8 m s(-1)) were conducted using an instrumented falling weight apparatus and were compared with static indentation tests (0.2 x 10(-4) m s(-1)). Intermediate velocity impacts were carried out by means of both Hopkinson bar (60 m s(-1)) and gas gun (200 m s(-1)) tests, Post-impact damage was assessed using X-ray radiography and microscopy, It was found that there is good correlation between low velocity impact and quasi-static responses. In both cases, penetration of the layered targets resulted in the formation of a distinctive plug. Increasing impact velocity (intermediate velocity range) snitched the penetration mode from plugging to fragmentation, giving rise to an increase in the absorbed energy. In this range, impacts led to localisation of damage in the region under the projectile, Furthermore, a comparison has been made between the penetration response of foam laminates and dense metal laminates of equivalent areal density. Preliminary results suggest that the dense metal laminates are superseded by the foam laminates on an energy absorption basis.

We have studied the response of a sol-gel based TiO(2), high k dielectric field effect transistor structure to microwave radiation. Under fixed bias conditions the transistor shows frequency dependent current fluctuations when exposed to continuous wave microwave radiation. Some of these fluctuations take the form of high Q resonances. The time dependent characteristics of these responses were studied by modulating the microwaves with a pulse signal. The measurements show that there is a shift in the centre frequency of these high Q resonances when the pulse time is varied. The measured lifetime of these resonances is high enough to be useful for non-classical information processing.

Passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has revolutionized the way in which products are identified. This paper considers the effect of metals on the performance of RFID at ultra high frequency (UHF). The paper establishes read patterns in space, highlighting the interference of RF waves due to three different metals, one ferrous and the other two non ferrous, when placed behind a transponder. The effect of thickness of the metal plate is also examined. Different metals have been found to have different interference effects although there are some similarities in their read patterns related to their material properties. Also experiments have been carried out to identify and establish various methods of improving this performance. Finally, differences between performance-measuring parameters, namely attenuating transmitted power and calculating read rate at a fixed attenuation are established and possible reasons of these observations are presented. © 2007 IEEE.

This letter presents a novel lateral superjunction lateral insulated-gate bipolar transistor (LIGBT) in partial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology in 0.18-μm partial-SOI (PSOI) high-voltage (HV) process. For an n-type superjunction LIGBT, the p-layer in the superjunction drift region not only helps in achieving uniform electric field distribution but also contributes to the on-state current. The superjunction LIGBT successfully achieves a breakdown voltage (BV) of 210 V with an R dson of 765 mΩ ̇ mm 2. It exhibits half the value of specific on-state resistance R dson and three times higher saturation current (I dsat) for the same BV, compared to a comparable lateral superjunction laterally diffused metal-oxide-semiconductor fabricated in the same technology. It also performs well in higher temperature dc operation with 38.8% increase in R dson at 175°C, compared to the room temperature without any degradation in latch-up performance. To realize this device, it only requires one additional mask layer into X-FAB 0.18-μm PSOI HV process. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we report on the realisation of a free space deposition process (FSD). For the first time the use of a moving support structure to deposit tracks of metal starting from a substrate and extending into free space is characterised. The ability to write metal shapes in free space has wide ranging applications in additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping where the tracks can be layered to build overhanging features without the use of fixed support structures (such as is used in selective laser melting (SLM) and stereo lithography (SLA)). We demonstrate and perform a preliminary characterisation of the process in which a soldering iron was used to deposit lead free solder tracks. The factors affecting the stability of tracks and the effect of operating parameters, temperature, velocity, initial track starting diameter and starting volume were measured. A series of 10 tracks at each setting were compared with a control group of tracks; the track width, taper and variation between tracks were compared. Notable results in free space track deposition were that the initial track diameter and volume affected the repeatability and quality of tracks. The standard deviation of mean track width of tracks from the constrained initial diameter group were half that of the unconstrained group. The amount of material fed to the soldering iron before commencing deposition affected the taper of tracks. At an initial volume of 7 mm3 and an initial track diameter of 0.8 mm, none of the ten tracks deposited broke or showed taper > ∼1°. The maximum deposition velocity for free space track deposition using lead-free solder was limited to 1.5 mm s-1. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electronic structures of InSb1-xNx nanowires are investigated using the ten-band k center dot p method. It is found that nitrogen increases the Rashba coefficient of the nanowires dramatically. For thick nanowires, the Rashba coefficient may increase by more than 20 times. The semiconductor-metal transition occurs more easily in InSb1-xNx nanowires than in InSb nanowires. The electronic structure of InSb1-xNx nanowires is very different from that of the bulk material. For fixed x the bulk material is a semimetal, while the nanowires are metal-like. In InSb1-xNx bulk material and thick nanowires, an interesting decrease of electron effective mass is observed near k=0 which is induced by the nitrogen, but this phenomenon disappears in thin nanowires.

Chemical-looping reforming (CLR) is a technology that can be used for partial oxidation and steam reforming of hydrocarbon fuels. It involves the use of a metal oxide as an oxygen carrier, which transfers oxygen from combustion air to the fuel. Composite oxygen carriers of cerium oxide added with Fe, Cu, and Mn oxides were prepared by co-precipitation and investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer and a fixed-bed reactor using methane as fuel and air as oxidizing gas. It was revealed that the addition of transition-metal oxides into cerium oxide can improve the reactivity of the Ce-based oxygen carrier. The three kinds of mixed oxides showed high CO and H-2 selectivity at above 800 degrees C. As for the Ce-Fe-O oxygen carrier, methane was converted to synthesis gas at a H-2/CO molar ratio close to 2:1 at a temperature of 800-900 degrees C; however, the methane thermolysis reaction was found on Ce-Cu-O and Ce-Mn-O oxygen carriers at 850-900 degrees C. Among the three kinds of oxygen carriers, Ce-Fe-O presented the best performance for methane CLR. On Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers, the CO and H-2 selectivity decreased as the Fe content increased in the carrier particles. An optimal range of the Ce/Fe molar ratio is Ce/Fe > 1 for Ce-Fe-O oxygen carriers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the microstructure of the Ce-Fe-O oxides was not dramatically changed before and after 20 cyclic reactions. A small amount of Fe3C was found in the reacted Ce-Fe-O oxides by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.

A one-dimensional isothermal pseudo-homogeneous parallel flow model was developed for the methanol synthesis from CO2 in a silicone rubber/ceramic composite membrane reactor. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was adopted to simulate the process behaviors in the membrane reactor. How those parameters affect the reaction behaviors in the membrane reactor, such as Damkohler number Da, pressure ratio p(r), reaction temperature T, membrane separation factor alpha, membrane permeation parameter phi , as well as the non-uniform parameter of membrane permeation L-1, were discussed in detail. Parts of the theoretical results were tested and verified; the experimental results showed that the conversion of the main reaction in the membrane reactor increased by 22% against traditional fixed bed reactor, and the optimal non-uniform parameter of membrane permeation rate, L-1.opt ,does exist. In our previous work, it was shown that LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 was an excellent catalyst for partial oxidation of heptane to syngas in a fixed-bed reactor at high temperature and the selectivity of CO was about 93%. However, pure oxygen was used as the oxidant. We have developed a dense oxygen permeation membrane Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 that can supply pure oxygen for the reaction. In this work, the membrane was combined with the catalyst LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 in one rector for the partial oxidation of heptane that is typical component of gasoline. A good performance of the membrane reactor has been obtained, with 100% n-heptane conversion and >94% hydrogen selectivity at the optimized reaction conditions. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The reaction of producing hydrogen for fuel cell which used normal octane as gasoline or diesel oil reactant through catalytic partial oxidizing and steam reforming method has been researched in the fixed-bed reactor. A series of catalysts that mainly used nickel supported on Al2O3 have been studied. It showed that the activity of the catalyst was increased with the content of nickel by using only nickel supported on Al2O3. However, its activity was not obviously increased when the content of nickel was over 5 wt%. The conversion ratio of normal octane and hydrogen selectivity were higher at higher reaction temperature. The single noble catalyst of palladium had better stability compared with that of platinum catalyst although their activity and selectivity were similar during the experimental reaction temperature. The prepared bimetallic catalyst consisted mainly of nickel and little noble metal of palladium supported on Al2O3. It showed that this catalyst had higher activity and selectivity, especially at lower or higher reaction temperatures compared with single nickel or palladium catalyst, and better stability. Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were selected as cross-linkers to construct three-dimensional (3D) porous nanoparticle/MWNT hybrid nanostructures by "bottom-up'' self-assembly. The resultant 3D hybrid nanostructure was different from that of metal nanoparticle multilayer assemblies prepared by traditional routes using small molecules or polymers as cross-linkers. The rigidity of the MWNTs resulted in only partial coverage of the nanoparticle surfaces between the linkers during the growth of multilayer film, providing more accessible surfaces to allow target molecules to adsorb on to and react with. HRP was used as a simple model to study the porosity of this assembly.

A surface-renewable tris (1,10-phenanthroline-5, 6-dione) iron (II) hexafluorophosphate (FePD) modified carbon ceramic electrode was constructed by dispersing FePD and graphite powder in methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) based gels. The FePD-modified electrode presented pH dependent voltammetric behavior, and its peak currents were diffusion-controlled in 0.1 mol/L Na2SO4 + H2SO4 solution (pH = 0. 4). In the, presence of iodate, clear electrocatalytic reduction waves were observed and thus the chemically modified electrode was used as an amperometric sensor for iodate in common salt. The linear range, sensitivity, detection limit and response time of the iodate sensor were 5 x 10(-6)-1 x 10(-2) mol/L, 7.448 muA.L/mmol, 1.2 x 10(-6) mol/L and 5 s, respectively. A distinct advantage of this sensor is its good reproducibility of surface-renewal by simple mechanical polishing.
