IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF PROBABLE INTRAVASCULAR HEMATOPOIESIS IN THE VASA RECTAE OF THE RENAL MEDULLA IN ACUTE TUBULAR-NECROSIS

Immunohistochemistry was applied to identify the nature of the nucleated cells that accumulate in the vasa rectae of the corticomedullary junction in acute tubular necrosis. In all 6 cases studied, there were intravascular cells that reacted with monoclonal antibodies to erythroblast, macrophages, myeloid cells, T and B lymphocytes and rave megakaryocytes. The findings are consistent with the occurrence of intravascular haematopoiesis in the renal medulla in acute tubular necrosis.

SPATIAL-ORGANIZATION OF FORAGING ACTIVITY AND COLONIZATION BY COLONY EMIGRATION IN THE PHARAOH ANT, MONOMORIUM-PHARAONIS

Using food bait stations and colony trap nests, the spatial relation between the foraging activity of established colonies of the polygynous and unicolonial exotic pharaoh's ant, Monomorium pharaonis, and colonization by colony fragments was studied over an 8 month period in a large institutional setting in Brazil. Both foraging activity and colonizations demonstrated significant spatial clumping. However, colonizations were significantly negatively clumped spatially with respect to foraging activity. This suggests that the colonization strategy of this species under the studied conditions was that of complete habitat domination.

AN ELECTROPHORETIC APPROACH TO THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE SUBSPECIES OF THE LANCEHEAD BOTHROPS-NEUWIEDI (SERPENTES, VIPERIDAE)

Bothrops neuwiedi is a lancehead with twelve recognized subspecies and a wide geographic distribution through South America. The relationships among six subspecies of B. neuwiedi were studied by means of plasma electrophoresis. The degrees of similarity among the subspecies were not geographically structured, and two main groups were recognised according to the electrophoregram patterns.
