When searching for food, animals often make decisions of where to go, how long to stay in a foraging area and whether or not to return to the last visited spot. These decisions can be enhanced by cognitive traits and adjusted based on previous experience. In social insects such as ants, foraging efficiency have an impact on both individual and colony level. The present study investigated, in the laboratory, the effect of distance from food, capture success and food size, and reward rate on decisions of where to forage in Dinoponera quadriceps, a ponerine ant that forage solitarily and individually make their foraging decisions. We also investigated the influence of learning on the performance of workers over successive trips searching for food by measuring the patch residence time in each foraging trip. Four scenarios were created differing in food reward rates, food size offered and distances colony-food site. Our work has shown that as a rule-of-thumb, workers of D. quadriceps return to the place where a prey item was found on the previous trip, regardless of distance, food size and reward rate. When ants did not capture preys, they were more likely to change path to search for food. However, in one of the scenarios, this decision to switch paths when unsuccessful was less evident, possibly due to the greater variation of possible outcomes ants could experience in this scenario and cognitive constraints of D. quadriceps to predict variations of food distribution. Our results also indicated a learning process of routes of exploration as well as the food site conditions for exploration. After repeated trips, foragers reduced the patch residence time in areas that they did not capture food and quickly changed of foraging area, increasing their foraging efficiency.

The study of birds represents an important tool for the understanding of the processes involved in behavioral and morphological patterns. The species we have studied belongs to Thamnophilidae family, the third largest family restricted to the Neotropic ecozone. They are popularly known as antbirds and comprise 209 species. A large portion of the species has cryptic behavior, making the acoustic communication an important tool for maintaining contact among birds. Herpsilochmus pectoralis Sclater 1857 has evident sexual dimorphism, measured between 10 and 12 cm height and it is found in forest fragments in the Northeast and it is also categorized as vulnerable to extinction process. This study was conducted in three sandbank fragments on the east coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. With the help of tape recordings between 2006 and 2012 it was possible to describe and characterize the sing of H. pectoralis. The sing from male birds has more and longer length than the female sing (16% of dimorphism). No differences were found in the dominant frequency between the sexes. We describe four types of calls from this species repertoire. Through capturing with ornithological nets between 2009 and 2012 it was possible to describe and compare the morphology of H. pectoralis. The species have shown lower corporal mass in the dry season. The young birds showed morphometric similarities in comparison to adults. The species has no accentuated dimorphism in their morphometric characteristics. The young ones with flying capabilities have morphometric characteristics of adults, even though they do not show a characteristic adult plumage. The moult pattern in the species is a characteristic of tropical birds, but it shows short reproductive period, typical of temperate species. Even being in the tropical region, the species suffers with seasonal rainfall, which influences their reproductive phenology and moult (remex and rectrix) cycle. Thus, this dissertation provides information on the biology of H. pectoralis to support the understanding of the relationship of this species to the environment and also to know the variations of morphology and vocal aspects, in order to understand patterns and general characteristics of Thamnophilidae.

A epilepsia é uma patologia crônica do sistema nervoso central que afeta cerca de 65 milhões de indivíduos no mundo. Aproximadamente 30% desses indivíduos desenvolvem crises convulsivas que persistem apesar do tratamento monitorado com drogas antiepiléptica s. Assim, há uma evidente necessidade do desenvolvimento de novos fármacos antiepilépticos e as peçonhas podem ser uma excelente fonte de modelos. Nesse contexto, enquanto já vários estudos sobre peçonhas de serpentes, escorpiões e aranhas, pouco se sabe s obre as peçonhas de formigas. Estudos prévios do nosso laboratório demonstraram que a peçonha desnaturada da formiga Dinoponera quadríceps protegeu camundongos de crises convulsivas e morte induzidas por bicuculina (BIC). Nesse contexto, o objetivo desse t rabalho foi investigar o potencial anticonvulsivante de frações isoladas da peçonha de D. quadríceps em crises convulsivas induzidas pela BIC, bem como uma análise dos efeitos dessas frações no comportamento natural dos camundongos no campo aberto. Os anim ais foram divididos em grupos, os quais receberam injeções (1 mg/ml i.c.v.) de seis frações distintas e tiveram seu comportamento geral observado no campo aberto durante 3 0 min. No segundo experimento, o s animais receberam as mesmas frações 20 min antes da administração de bicuculina (10 mg/ml). Em seguida, foi analisado o comportamento motor convulsivo desses animais durante 30 minutos no campo aberto. No primeiro experimento, não foram observadas alterações comportamentais. Já no segundo experimento, a ad ministração prévia de DqTx1, DqTx3, DqTx4 e DqTx6 aumentou a latência para o desenvolvimento de crises tônico - clônicas. Além disso, todas as frações, exceto DqTx5, aumentaram a latência para a morte dos animais. Ainda, os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a fração DqTx6, que protegeu 62,5% dos animais testados contra o desenvolvimento de crises tônico - clônicas e 100% dos animais contra a morte.

Contemporary integrated circuits are designed and manufactured in a globalized environment leading to concerns of piracy, overproduction and counterfeiting. One class of techniques to combat these threats is circuit obfuscation which seeks to modify the gate-level (or structural) description of a circuit without affecting its functionality in order to increase the complexity and cost of reverse engineering. Most of the existing circuit obfuscation methods are based on the insertion of additional logic (called “key gates”) or camouflaging existing gates in order to make it difficult for a malicious user to get the complete layout information without extensive computations to determine key-gate values. However, when the netlist or the circuit layout, although camouflaged, is available to the attacker, he/she can use advanced logic analysis and circuit simulation tools and Boolean SAT solvers to reveal the unknown gate-level information without exhaustively trying all the input vectors, thus bringing down the complexity of reverse engineering. To counter this problem, some ‘provably secure’ logic encryption algorithms that emphasize methodical selection of camouflaged gates have been proposed previously in literature [1,2,3]. The contribution of this paper is the creation and simulation of a new layout obfuscation method that uses don't care conditions. We also present proof-of-concept of a new functional or logic obfuscation technique that not only conceals, but modifies the circuit functionality in addition to the gate-level description, and can be implemented automatically during the design process. Our layout obfuscation technique utilizes don’t care conditions (namely, Observability and Satisfiability Don’t Cares) inherent in the circuit to camouflage selected gates and modify sub-circuit functionality while meeting the overall circuit specification. Here, camouflaging or obfuscating a gate means replacing the candidate gate by a 4X1 Multiplexer which can be configured to perform all possible 2-input/ 1-output functions as proposed by Bao et al. [4]. It is important to emphasize that our approach not only obfuscates but alters sub-circuit level functionality in an attempt to make IP piracy difficult. The choice of gates to obfuscate determines the effort required to reverse engineer or brute force the design. As such, we propose a method of camouflaged gate selection based on the intersection of output logic cones. By choosing these candidate gates methodically, the complexity of reverse engineering can be made exponential, thus making it computationally very expensive to determine the true circuit functionality. We propose several heuristic algorithms to maximize the RE complexity based on don’t care based obfuscation and methodical gate selection. Thus, the goal of protecting the design IP from malicious end-users is achieved. It also makes it significantly harder for rogue elements in the supply chain to use, copy or replicate the same design with a different logic. We analyze the reverse engineering complexity by applying our obfuscation algorithm on ISCAS-85 benchmarks. Our experimental results indicate that significant reverse engineering complexity can be achieved at minimal design overhead (average area overhead for the proposed layout obfuscation methods is 5.51% and average delay overhead is about 7.732%). Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de diferentes tipos de controle de plantas infestantes sobre a mirmecofauna em um plantio inicial de Eucalyptus grandis . Para tanto, em março de 2011 foi realizado o início da implantação da cultura, em uma área localizada no município de Santa Maria - RS. Os seis tratamentos constituíram-se em controle químico total de plantas infestantes, na linha e na entrelinha de plantio, com glifosato (T1); controle químico total de plantas infestantes, na linha de plantio, com glifosato (T2); controle químico de monocotiledôneas na linha e entrelinha de plantio, com setoxidim (T3); controle químico de dicotiledôneas na linha e entrelinha de plantio, com bentazona (T4); controle químico total de plantas infestantes em faixa de um metro paralela à linha de plantio, com glifosato, e de um metro na parte central da entrelinha, sem controle (T5); e testemunha, sem controle de plantas infestantes (T6). O levantamento da mirmecofauna foi realizado no período de um ano utilizando-se três métodos de coleta: isca atrativa, armadilha de solo e funil de Berlese, com seis repetições por tratamento, em cada data de coleta. Nesse período foram coletadas 46.675 formigas, distribuídas em 37 espécies, não sendo verificada diferença significativa entre o total de espécimens coletados. Na área do tratamento constituído pelo controle de plantas infestantes somente na linha de plantio verificou-se eficiência amostral de 99,0% e Sobs = 35. Entre os índices de Diversidade de Shannon (H’), destacou-se o valor encontrado para a área do tratamento T2 (H’= 1,34) em detrimento dos valores das áreas nas quais foram instalados os tratamentos T1 (H’= 1,25) e T5 (H’= 1,23). Havendo assim, uma maior coexistência de espécies de formigas entre as áreas com estrutura florística menos alterada e entre as áreas mais simplificadas. Não tendo sido verificada correlação significativa (r = 0,0463) entre a riqueza de espécies de formigas coletadas e o número de plantas infestantes encontradas ao final do experimento. Assim, conclui-se que os efeitos indiretos da ação dos herbicidas afetam mais a composição local de espécies de formigas do que sua riqueza.

The fruit fly Ceratitis capitata is considered the most destructive pest of the world fruitculture. Many pest management practices, mainly based on agrochemicals, have been developed to allow the world-wide commerce of fruit. Solutions to decrease the use of synthetic insecticides in agriculture are based on the development of new target-specific compounds which cause less damage to the environment, especially vegetal proteins with insecticidal effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate the deleterious effect of a purified vicilin of E. velutina (EvV) seeds to C. capitata larvae and adult insects and to investigate the mechanisms involved in these effects. EvV was purified, characterized and its deleterious effect was tested in bioassay systems. EvV mechanism of action was determined by immunodetection techniques and fluorescence localization in chitin structures that are present in C. capitata digestory system. EvV is a glycoprotein with affinity to chitin. Its molecular weight, of 216,57 kDa, was determined by gel filtration chromatography in FPLC system. Using SDS-PAGE, it was possible to observe EvV dissociation in two main subunits of 54,8 and 50,8 kDa. When it was submitted to eletrophoresis in native conditions, EvV presented only one band of acid characteristic. The WD50 and LD50 values found in the bioassays were 0,13% and 0,14% (w/w), respectively for the larvae. EvV deleterious effects were related to the binding to chitin structures presented in peritrophic membrane and gut epithelial cells, associated with its low digestibility in C. capitata digestive tract. The results described herein are the first demonstration of the larvicidal effects of plant protein on C. capitata larvae. EvV may be part of the pest management programs, in the toxic bait composition, or an alternative in plant improvement program

Este relatório de Prática de Ensino Supervisionada abrange os contextos Creche e Jardim-de-Infância. Encontra-se dividido em quatro capítulos. O primeiro e o segundo capítulos referem-se ao contexto creche. O terceiro e o quarto capítulos ao contexto Jardim-de-Infância. No primeiro capítulo do relatório consta uma dimensão reflexiva de alguns momentos vividos na Prática Pedagógica, em contexto creche. O segundo capítulo revela o ensaio investigativo realizado com três crianças com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e os 20 meses que visou identificar e descrever as interações entre pares, no momento de brincadeira livre. Segundo uma metodologia qualitativa, este estudo revelou que as três crianças estabeleceram interações essencialmente através de interação não-verbal, mais concretamente através do olhar. O terceiro capítulo deste relatório apresenta uma análise reflexiva de alguns momentos vividos na Prática Pedagógica em contexto de Jardim-de-Infância. Por fim, o quarto capítulo refere-se aos momentos vividos na realização do projeto: “As formigas”, desenvolvido de acordo com as etapas da metodologia de trabalho de projeto. Com este projeto, crianças e adultos descobriram que as formigas, que já existiam no tempo dos dinossauros, têm seis patas e que podem viver até dezoito anos.
