The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of repairs in porcelain conditioned with laser. Sixty porcelain discs were made and six groups were formed (n = 10): G1: conditioning with laser with potency 760 mW; G2: conditioning with laser with potency 760 mW and application of 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s; G3: conditioning with laser with potency 900 mW; G4: conditioning with laser with potency 900 mW and application of 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s; G5: application of 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s (group control) and G6: application of 10% hydrofluoric acid for 2 min. The composite resin was insert of incremental layers at the porcelain surface aided with a metal matrix, and photoactivation for 20 s each increment. The specimens were submitted to a thermal cycling by 1000 cycles of 30 s in each bath with temperature between 5 and 55 degrees C. After the thermal cycling, specimens were submitted to the shear bond strength. The results were evaluated statistically through analysis of variance and Tukey's tests with 5% significance. The averages and standard deviation founded were: G1, 11.25 (+/- 3.10); G2, 12.32 (+/- 2.65); G3, 14.02 (+/- 2.38); G4, 13.44 (+/- 2,07); G5, 9.91 (-/+ 2,18); G6, 12.74 (+/- 2.67). The results showed that the femtosecond laser produced a shear bond strength of repairs in porcelain equal to the hydrofluoric acid and significantly superior to the use of phosphoric acid. Microsc. One of the clinical limitations of the photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the reduced light penetration into biological tissues. Pulsed lasers may present advantages concerning photodynamic response when compared to continuous wave (CW) lasers operating under the same average power conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate PDT-induced response when using femtosecond laser (FSL) and a first-generation photosensitizer (Photogem) to evaluate the induced depth of necrosis. The in vitro photodegradation of the sensitizer was monitored during illumination either with CWor an FSL as an indirect measurement of the PDT response. Healthy liver of Wistar rats was used to evaluate the tissue response. The photosensitizer was endovenously injected and 30 min after, an energy dose of 150 Jcm-2 was delivered to the liver surface. We observed that the photodegradation rate evaluated via fluorescence spectroscopy was higher for the FSL illumination. The FSL-PDT produced a necrosis nearly twice as deep when compared to the CW-PDT. An increase of the tissue temperature during the application was measured and was not higher than 2.5 °C for the CW laser and not higher than 4.5 °C for the pulsed laser. FSL should be considered as an alternative in PDT applications for improving the results in the treatment of bulky tumors where higher light penetration is required.

Within this thesis a new double laser pulse pumping scheme for plasma-based, transient collisionally excited soft x-ray lasers (SXRL) was developed, characterized and utilized for applications. SXRL operations from ~50 up to ~200 electron volt were demonstrated applying this concept. As a central technical tool, a special Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) laser front-end was developed for the generation of fully controllable double-pulses to optimally pump SXRLs.rnThis Mach-Zehnder device is fully controllable and enables the creation of two CPA pulses of different pulse duration and variable energy balance with an adjustable time delay. Besides the SXRL pumping, the double-pulse configuration was applied to determine the B-integral in the CPA laser system by amplifying short pulse replica in the system, followed by an analysis in the time domain. The measurement of B-integral values in the 0.1 to 1.5 radian range, only limited by the reachable laser parameters, proved to be a promising tool to characterize nonlinear effects in the CPA laser systems.rnContributing to the issue of SXRL pumping, the double-pulse was configured to optimally produce the gain medium of the SXRL amplification. The focusing geometry of the two collinear pulses under the same grazing incidence angle on the target, significantly improved the generation of the active plasma medium. On one hand the effect was induced by the intrinsically guaranteed exact overlap of the two pulses on the target, and on the other hand by the grazing incidence pre-pulse plasma generation, which allows for a SXRL operation at higher electron densities, enabling higher gain in longer wavelength SXRLs and higher efficiency at shorter wavelength SXRLs. The observation of gain enhancement was confirmed by plasma hydrodynamic simulations.rnThe first introduction of double short-pulse single-beam grazing incidence pumping for SXRL pumping below 20 nanometer at the laser facility PHELIX in Darmstadt (Germany), resulted in a reliable operation of a nickel-like palladium SXRL at 14.7 nanometer with a pump energy threshold strongly reduced to less than 500 millijoule. With the adaptation of the concept, namely double-pulse single-beam grazing incidence pumping (DGRIP) and the transfer of this technology to the laser facility LASERIX in Palaiseau (France), improved efficiency and stability of table-top high-repetition soft x-ray lasers in the wavelength region below 20 nanometer was demonstrated. With a total pump laser energy below 1 joule the target, 2 mircojoule of nickel-like molybdenum soft x-ray laser emission at 18.9 nanometer was obtained at 10 hertz repetition rate, proving the attractiveness for high average power operation. An easy and rapid alignment procedure fulfilled the requirements for a sophisticated installation, and the highly stable output satisfied the need for a reliable strong SXRL source. The qualities of the DGRIP scheme were confirmed in an irradiation operation on user samples with over 50.000 shots corresponding to a deposited energy of ~ 50 millijoule.rnThe generation of double-pulses with high energies up to ~120 joule enabled the transfer to shorter wavelength SXRL operation at the laser facility PHELIX. The application of DGRIP proved to be a simple and efficient method for the generation of soft x-ray lasers below 10 nanometer. Nickel-like samarium soft x-ray lasing at 7.3 nanometer was achieved at a low total pump energy threshold of 36 joule, which confirmed the suitability of the applied pumping scheme. A reliable and stable SXRL operation was demonstrated, due to the single-beam pumping geometry despite the large optical apertures. The soft x-ray lasing of nickel-like samarium was an important milestone for the feasibility of applying the pumping scheme also for higher pumping pulse energies, which are necessary to obtain soft x-ray laser wavelengths in the water window. The reduction of the total pump energy below 40 joule for 7.3 nanometer short wavelength lasing now fulfilled the requirement for the installation at the high-repetition rate operation laser facility LASERIX.rn

As an emerging optical material, graphene’s ultrafast dynamics are often probed using pulsed lasers yet the region in which optical damage takes place is largely uncharted. Here, femtosecond laser pulses induced localized damage in single-layer graphene on sapphire. Raman spatial mapping, SEM, and AFM microscopy quantified the damage. The resulting size of the damaged area has a linear correlation with the optical fluence. These results demonstrate local modification of sp2-carbon bonding structures with optical pulse fluences as low as 14 mJ/cm2, an order-of-magnitude lower than measured and theoretical ablation thresholds.

We present the results of two-pump and probe femtosecond experiments designed to follow the relaxation dynamics of the lowest excited state (S1) populated by different modes. In the first mode, a direct (S0 → S1) radiative excitation of the ground state is used. In the second mode, an indirect excitation is used where the S1 state is populated by the use of two femtosecond laser pulses with different colors and delay times between them. The first pulse excites the S0 → S1 transition whereas the second pulse excites the S1 → Sn transition. The nonradiative relaxation from the Sn state populates the lowest excited state. Our results suggest that the S1 state relaxes faster when populated nonradiatively from the Sn state than when pumped directly by the S0 → S1 excitation. Additionally, the Sn → S1 nonradiative relaxation time is found to change by varying the delay time between the two pump pulses. The observed dependence of the lowest excited state population as well as its dependence on the delay between the two pump pulses are found to fit a kinetic model in which the Sn state populates a different surface (called S′1) than the one being directly excited (S1). The possible involvement of the Ag type states, the J intermediate, and the conical intersection leading to the S0 or to the isomerization product (K intermediate) are discussed in the framework of the proposed model.

In this work, a microchanneled chirped fiber Bragg grating (MCFBG) is proposed and fabricated through the femtosecond laser-assisted chemical etching. The microchannel (~550 µm) gives access to the external index liquid, thus inducing refractive index (RI) sensitivity to the structure. In the experiment, the transmission bands induced by the reduced effective index in the microchannel region were used to sense the surrounding RI and temperature changes. The experimental results show good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The proposed MCFBG offers enhanced RI sensitivity without degrading the robustness of the device showing good application potential as bio-chemical sensors.

The structure of fiber Bragg gratings inscribed pointby-point by an infrared femtosecond laser is studied by quantitative phase microscopy. Results show that these gratings present a central region with a depressed refractive index surrounded by an outer corona with increased refractive index. The refractive index profile suggests the presence of microvoids embedded in a region of the core. © 2006 IEEE.

Currently, direct-write waveguide fabrication is probably the most widely studied application of femtosecond laser micromachining in transparent dielectrics. Devices such as buried waveguides, power splitters, couplers, gratings, and optical amplifiers have all been demonstrated. Waveguide properties depend critically on the sample material properties and writing laser characteristics. In this paper, we discuss the challenges facing researchers using the femtosecond laser direct-write technique with specific emphasis being placed on the suitability of fused silica and phosphate glass as device hosts for different applications.

In this thesis, I describe studies on fabrication, spectral characteristics and applications of tilted fibre gratings (TFGs) with small, large and 45° tilted structures and novel developments in fabrication of fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) and long period gratings (LPGs) in normal silica and mid-infrared (mid-IR) glass fibres using near-IR femtosecond laser. One of the major contributions presented in this thesis is the systematic investigation of structures, inscription methods and spectral, polarisation dependent loss (PDL) and thermal characteristics of TFGs with small (<45°), large (>45°) and 45° tilted structures. I have experimentally characterised TFGs, obtaining relationships between the radiation angle, central wavelength of the radiation profile, Bragg resonance and the tilt angle, which are consistent with theoretical simulation based on the mode-coupling theory. Furthermore, thermal responses have been measured for these three types of TFGs, showing the transmission spectra of large and 45° TFGs are insensitive to the temperature change, unlike the normal and small angle tilted FBGs. Based on the distinctive optical properties, TFGs have been developed into interrogation system and sensors, which form the other significant contributions of the work presented in this thesis. The 10°-TFG based 800nm WDM interrogation system can function not just as an in-fibre spectrum analyser but also possess refractive index sensing capability. By utilising the unique polarisation properties, the 81 °-TFG based sensors are capable of sensing the transverse loading and twisting with sensitivities of 2.04pW/(kg/m) and 145.90pW/rad, repectively. The final but the most important contribution from the research work presented in this thesis is the development of novel grating inscription techniques using near-IR femtosecond laser. A number of LPGs and FBGs were successfully fabricated in normal silica and mid-IR glass fibres using point-by-point and phase-mask techniques. LPGs and 1st and 2nd order FBGs have been fabricated in these mid-IR glass fibres showing resonances covering the wavelength range from 1200 to 1700nm with the strengths up to 13dB. In addition, the thermal and strain sensitivities of these gratings have been systematically investigated. All the results from these initial but systematic works will provide useful function characteristics information for future fibre grating based devices and applications in mid-IR range.

In this letter, we present a standard linear cavity fiber laser incorporating a microchannel for refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing. The microchannel of ~6µm width created by femtosecond laser aided chemical etching provides an access to the external liquid; therefore, the laser cavity loss changes with the liquids of different RIs. Thus, at a fixed pump power, the output laser power will vary with the change of RI in the microchannel. The results show that the proposed sensing system has a linear response to both the surrounding medium RI and temperature. The RI sensitivity of the laser system is on the order of 10-3, while the temperature sensitivity is about 0.02 C. Both sensitivities could be further enhanced by employing a more sensitive photodetector and using higher pump power.
