Both Leishmania major and L. braziliensis induce cutaneous leishmaniasis in BALB/c mice. Whereas BALB/c mice die of infection with L. major, they cure an infection with L. braziliensis. We report here that after curing an infection with L. braziliensis, BALB/c mice are resistant to challenge with L. major. When challenged with L. major, L. braziliensis pre-treated BALB/c mice mounted a delayed-type hypersensitivity response to L. major and produced high amounts of interferon-g (IFN-g ) but low amounts of interleukin-4. The IFN-g produced by the L. braziliensis pre-infected mice was involved in the protection seen against L. major challenge since treating the mice with a neutralizing anti-IFN-g abrogated the protection. This suggests that cross-reactive antigen epitopes exist between L. braziliensis and L. major and that pre-infection with L. braziliensis primes BALB/c mice to epitopes on L. major that can elicit a protective Th1 response to the parasite.

The HUPO Proteomics Standards Initiative has developed several standardized data formats to facilitate data sharing in mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics. These allow researchers to report their complete results in a unified way. However, at present, there is no format to describe the final qualitative and quantitative results for proteomics and metabolomics experiments in a simple tabular format. Many downstream analysis use cases are only concerned with the final results of an experiment and require an easily accessible format, compatible with tools such as Microsoft Excel or R. We developed the mzTab file format for MS-based proteomics and metabolomics results to meet this need. mzTab is intended as a lightweight supplement to the existing standard XML-based file formats (mzML, mzIdentML, mzQuantML), providing a comprehensive summary, similar in concept to the supplemental material of a scientific publication. mzTab files can contain protein, peptide, and small molecule identifications together with experimental metadata and basic quantitative information. The format is not intended to store the complete experimental evidence but provides mechanisms to report results at different levels of detail. These range from a simple summary of the final results to a representation of the results including the experimental design. This format is ideally suited to make MS-based proteomics and metabolomics results available to a wider biological community outside the field of MS. Several software tools for proteomics and metabolomics have already adapted the format as an output format. In the Morris water maze (MWM) task, proprioceptive information is likely to have a poor accuracy due to movement inertia. Hence, in this condition, dynamic visual information providing information on linear and angular acceleration would play a critical role in spatial navigation. To investigate this assumption we compared rat's spatial performance in the MWM and in the homing hole board (HB) tasks using a 1.5 Hz stroboscopic illumination. In the MWM, rats trained in the stroboscopic condition needed more time than those trained in a continuous light condition to reach the hidden platform. They expressed also little accuracy during the probe trial. In the HB task, in contrast, place learning remained unaffected by the stroboscopic light condition. The deficit in the MWM was thus complete, affecting both escape latency and discrimination of the reinforced area, and was thus task specific. This dissociation confirms that dynamic visual information is crucial to spatial navigation in the MWM whereas spatial navigation on solid ground is mediated by a multisensory integration, and thus less dependent on visual information.

The purpose of this study was to prospectively compare free-breathing navigator-gated cardiac-triggered three-dimensional steady-state free precession (SSFP) spin-labeling coronary magnetic resonance (MR) angiography performed by using Cartesian k-space sampling with that performed by using radial k-space sampling. A new dedicated placement of the two-dimensional selective labeling pulse and an individually adjusted labeling delay time approved by the institutional review board were used. In 14 volunteers (eight men, six women; mean age, 28.8 years) who gave informed consent, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), vessel sharpness, vessel length, and subjective image quality were investigated. Differences between groups were analyzed with nonparametric tests (Wilcoxon, Pearson chi2). Radial imaging, as compared with Cartesian imaging, resulted in a significant reduction in the severity of motion artifacts, as well as an increase in SNR (26.9 vs 12.0, P < .05) in the coronary arteries and CNR (23.1 vs 8.8, P < .05) between the coronary arteries and the myocardium. A tendency toward improved vessel sharpness and vessel length was also found with radial imaging. Radial SSFP imaging is a promising technique for spin-labeling coronary MR angiography.

We live in a "Demon-Haunted World". Human health care requires the ever increasing resistance of pathogens to be confronted by a correspondingly fast rate of discovery of novel antibiotics. One of the possible strategies towards this objective involves the rational localization of bioactive phytochemicals. The conceptual basis of the method consists in the surprisingly little known gearings of natural products with morphology, ecology and evolution of their plant source, i. e. an introspection into the general mechanisms of nature.

This paper examines the conditions allowing the formation of aeropolitan areas as large industrial areas with a high concentration of commercial activities in the proximity of selected airports. We assume that firms deliver their production by plane and land competition takes place among service operators, firms and farmers. Service operators supply facilities that firms can absorb. Our framework identifies a unique land equilibrium characterized by the spatial sequence Airport - Industrial park - Rural area (A-I-R). Aerotropolis-type configurations are associated with the level of transport costs and the degree of intensity of facilities. Keywords: aerotropolis; facilities; bid-rent function. Projecte de recerca elaborat a partir d’una estada a la Center for European Integration de la Freie Universität Berlin, Alemania, entre 2007 i 2009. El tema central del projecte consisteix en la descripció matemàtica de processos espai-temporals mitjançant la teoria dels Continuous-Time Random Walks. L'aportació més significativa del nostre treball en aquest camp consisteix en considerar per primera vegada la interacció entre diversos processos actuant de manera acoblada, ja que fins ara els models existents es limitaven a l'estudi de processos individuals o independents. Aquesta idea fa possible, per exemple, plantejar un sistema de transport en l'espai i a la vegada un procés de reacció (una reacció química, per exemple), i estudiar estadísticament com cada un pot alterar el comportament de l'altre. Això suposa un salt qualitatiu important en la descripció de processos de reacció-dispersió, ja que els nostres models permeten incorporar patrons de dispersió i comportaments temporals (cicles de vida) força realistes en comparació amb els models convencionals. Per tal de completar aquest treball teòric ha estat necessari també desenvolupar algunes eines numèriques (models de xarxa) per facilitar la implementació dels models. En la vessant pràctica, hem aplicat aquestes idees al cas de la dinàmica entre virus i el sistema immunològic que té lloc quan es produeix una infecció a l'organisme. Diferents estudis experimentals portats a terme els últims anys mostren com la resposta immunològica dels organismes superiors presenta una dinàmica temporal força complexa (per exemple, en el cas de la resposta programada). Per aquest motiu, les nostres tècniques matemàtiques són d'especial utilitat per a l'anàlisi d'aquests sistemes. Finalment, altres possibles aplicacions dels models, com ara l'estudi d'invasions biològiques, també han estat considerades.

In this paper we give new characterization of the classical Morrey space. Complementary global Morrey-type spaces are introduced. It is proved that for particular values of parameters these spaces give new pre-dual space of the classical Morrey space. We also show that our new pre-dual space of the Morrey space coincides with known pre-dual spaces.

SOUND OBJECTS IN TIME, SPACE AND ACTIONThe term "sound object" describes an auditory experience that is associated with an acoustic event produced by a sound source. At cortical level, sound objects are represented by temporo-spatial activity patterns within distributed neural networks. This investigation concerns temporal, spatial and action aspects as assessed in normal subjects using electrical imaging or measurement of motor activity induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).Hearing the same sound again has been shown to facilitate behavioral responses (repetition priming) and to modulate neural activity (repetition suppression). In natural settings the same source is often heard again and again, with variations in spectro-temporal and spatial characteristics. I have investigated how such repeats influence response times in a living vs. non-living categorization task and the associated spatio-temporal patterns of brain activity in humans. Dynamic analysis of distributed source estimations revealed differential sound object representations within the auditory cortex as a function of the temporal history of exposure to these objects. Often heard sounds are coded by a modulation in a bilateral network. Recently heard sounds, independently of the number of previous exposures, are coded by a modulation of a left-sided network.With sound objects which carry spatial information, I have investigated how spatial aspects of the repeats influence neural representations. Dynamics analyses of distributed source estimations revealed an ultra rapid discrimination of sound objects which are characterized by spatial cues. This discrimination involved two temporo-spatially distinct cortical representations, one associated with position-independent and the other with position-linked representations within the auditory ventral/what stream.Action-related sounds were shown to increase the excitability of motoneurons within the primary motor cortex, possibly via an input from the mirror neuron system. The role of motor representations remains unclear. I have investigated repetition priming-induced plasticity of the motor representations of action sounds with the measurement of motor activity induced by TMS pulses applied on the hand motor cortex. TMS delivered to the hand area within the primary motor cortex yielded larger magnetic evoked potentials (MEPs) while the subject was listening to sounds associated with manual than non- manual actions. Repetition suppression was observed at motoneuron level, since during a repeated exposure to the same manual action sound the MEPs were smaller. I discuss these results in terms of specialized neural network involved in sound processing, which is characterized by repetition-induced plasticity.Thus, neural networks which underlie sound object representations are characterized by modulations which keep track of the temporal and spatial history of the sound and, in case of action related sounds, also of the way in which the sound is produced.LES OBJETS SONORES AU TRAVERS DU TEMPS, DE L'ESPACE ET DES ACTIONSLe terme "objet sonore" décrit une expérience auditive associée avec un événement acoustique produit par une source sonore. Au niveau cortical, les objets sonores sont représentés par des patterns d'activités dans des réseaux neuronaux distribués. Ce travail traite les aspects temporels, spatiaux et liés aux actions, évalués à l'aide de l'imagerie électrique ou par des mesures de l'activité motrice induite par stimulation magnétique trans-crânienne (SMT) chez des sujets sains. Entendre le même son de façon répétitive facilite la réponse comportementale (amorçage de répétition) et module l'activité neuronale (suppression liée à la répétition). Dans un cadre naturel, la même source est souvent entendue plusieurs fois, avec des variations spectro-temporelles et de ses caractéristiques spatiales. J'ai étudié la façon dont ces répétitions influencent le temps de réponse lors d'une tâche de catégorisation vivant vs. non-vivant, et les patterns d'activité cérébrale qui lui sont associés. Des analyses dynamiques d'estimations de sources ont révélé des représentations différenciées des objets sonores au niveau du cortex auditif en fonction de l'historique d'exposition à ces objets. Les sons souvent entendus sont codés par des modulations d'un réseau bilatéral. Les sons récemment entendus sont codé par des modulations d'un réseau du côté gauche, indépendamment du nombre d'expositions. Avec des objets sonores véhiculant de l'information spatiale, j'ai étudié la façon dont les aspects spatiaux des sons répétés influencent les représentations neuronales. Des analyses dynamiques d'estimations de sources ont révélé une discrimination ultra rapide des objets sonores caractérisés par des indices spatiaux. Cette discrimination implique deux représentations corticales temporellement et spatialement distinctes, l'une associée à des représentations indépendantes de la position et l'autre à des représentations liées à la position. Ces représentations sont localisées dans la voie auditive ventrale du "quoi".Des sons d'actions augmentent l'excitabilité des motoneurones dans le cortex moteur primaire, possiblement par une afférence du system des neurones miroir. Le rôle des représentations motrices des sons d'actions reste peu clair. J'ai étudié la plasticité des représentations motrices induites par l'amorçage de répétition à l'aide de mesures de potentiels moteurs évoqués (PMEs) induits par des pulsations de SMT sur le cortex moteur de la main. La SMT appliquée sur le cortex moteur primaire de la main produit de plus grands PMEs alors que les sujets écoutent des sons associée à des actions manuelles en comparaison avec des sons d'actions non manuelles. Une suppression liée à la répétition a été observée au niveau des motoneurones, étant donné que lors de l'exposition répétée au son de la même action manuelle les PMEs étaient plus petits. Ces résultats sont discuté en termes de réseaux neuronaux spécialisés impliqués dans le traitement des sons et caractérisés par de la plasticité induite par la répétition. Ainsi, les réseaux neuronaux qui sous-tendent les représentations des objets sonores sont caractérisés par des modulations qui gardent une trace de l'histoire temporelle et spatiale du son ainsi que de la manière dont le son a été produit, en cas de sons d'actions.

La beca concedida ha anat destinada a desenvolupar la tesi doctoral que duu per nom "Les ciutats turístiques, les noves ciutats. Anàlisi de l'evolució del model turístic en destinacions de litoral madures a partir de l'anàlisi de paràmetres urbanístics". L’àrea d’estudi comprèn els municipis de Cambrils, Salou i La Pineda (Vila-seca) que conformen la Costa Daurada central, destinació madura de litoral mediterrani, que basa el seu desenvolupament d’acord el model turístic de sol i platja. Arribats en aquest punt de finalització de la beca, cal destacar que s’ha complert amb l'objectiu d'analitzar el procés de transformació de les ciutats turístiques, tot establint com el turisme litoral mediterrani s'ha convertit en un factor de creació de ciutat. Així mateix també s'han complert els objectius específics tals com: analitzar l'evolució de les destinacions turístiques consolidades del litoral mediterrani, recopilar informació per a la creació d'índexs i eines que serveixin per l'anàlisi del procés de tranformació de les ciutats turístiques a ciutats tradicionals a partir del tractament dels plans parcials, recopilar i analitzar les polítiques de planificació que han condicionat l'area d'estudi, modelitzar el procés de construcció de l'espai turístic a partir de l'establiment d'unes unitats bàsiques en la descripció i anàlisi territorial i paisatgístic, i crear un SIG per culminar el procés d'anàlisi tot creant una base de dades i la representació dels resultats en cartogradia temàtica. Pel que fa al disseny i l’execució de la metodologia, es poden considerar dos vessants, una vessant més qualitativa i una altra més quantitativa per al tractament de la informació recopilada. Igualment la generació de cartografia específica completa el procés amb la producció de cartografia específica, tal i com es desenvolupa en la present memòria. La tesi parteix del guió que contempla: un prier capítol d'introducció, un segon dedicat al marc teòric, un tercer apartat on s'exposaran les hipòtesis de les quals es parteix, i un quart dedicat a la metodologia. Pren especial importància l'apartat dedicat a l’ànalisi, així com el dedicat a la discussió dels resultats obtinguts, que es desenvoluparà en el sisè apartat. Per últim resta destacar el setè apartat dedicat a les conclusions a les que s'ha arribat.

Este proyecto tiene como objetivo crear y aplicar una metodología a una aplicación llamada MATE que fue creada en en el año 2003 por Anna Sikora para su tesis doctoral. Se trata de dotar el proyecto MATE de las herramientas necesarias para garantizar su evolución. La metodología creada consta de la especificación de un entorno de trabajo y una serie de documentos que detallan los procesos relativos al desarrollo de MATE. Además se han creado algunas nuevas características que hacen de MATE una herramienta más completa y cómoda.

In the last decade, dengue fever (DF) in Brazil has been recognized as an important public health problem, and an increasing number of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases have been reported since the introduction of dengue virus type 2 (DEN-2) into the country in 1990. In order to analyze the complete genome sequence of a DEN-2 Brazilian strain (BR64022/98), we designed primers to amplify contiguous segments of approximately 500 base pairs across the entire sequence of the viral genome. Twenty fragments amplified by reverse transcriptase-PCR were cloned, and the complete nucleotide and the deduced amino acid sequences were determined. This constitutes the first complete genetic characterization of a DEN-2 strain from Brazil. All amino acid changes differentiating strains related to the Asian/American-Asian genotype were observed in BR64022/98, indicating the Asiatic origin of the strain.
