BACKGROUND: The escalating prevalence of obesity might prompt obese subjects to consider themselves as normal, as this condition is gradually becoming as frequent as normal weight. In this study, we aimed to assess the trends in the associations between obesity and self-rated health in two countries. METHODS: Data from the Portuguese (years 1995-6, 1998-6 and 2005-6) and Swiss (1992-3, 1997, 2002 and 2007) National Health Surveys were used, corresponding to more than 130,000 adults (64,793 for Portugal and 65,829 for Switzerland). Body mass index and self-rated health were derived from self-reported data. RESULTS: Obesity levels were higher in Portugal (17.5% in 2005-6 vs. 8.9% in 2007 in Switzerland, p < 0.001) and increased in both countries. The prevalence of participants rating their health as "bad" or "very bad" was higher in Portugal than in Switzerland (21.8% in 2005-6 vs 3.9% in 2007, p < 0.001). In both countries, obese participants rated more frequently their health as "bad" or "very bad" than participants with regular weight. In Switzerland, the prevalence of "bad" or "very bad" rates among obese participants, increased from 6.5% in 1992-3 to 9.8% in 2007, while in Portugal it decreased from 41.3% to 32.3%. After multivariate adjustment, the odds ratio (OR) of stating one self's health as "bad" or "very bad" among obese relative to normal weight participants, almost doubled in Switzerland: from 1.38 (95% confidence interval, CI: 1.01-1.87) in 1992-3 to 2.64 (95% CI: 2.14-3.26) in 2007, and similar findings were obtained after sample weighting. Conversely, no such trend was found in Portugal: 1.35 (95% CI: 1.23-1.48) in 1995-6 and 1.52 (95% CI: 1.37-1.70) in 2005-6. CONCLUSION: Obesity is increasing in Switzerland and Portugal. Obesity is increasingly associated with poorer self-health ratings in Switzerland but not in Portugal.

In 1957, the Iowa State Highway Commission, with financial assistance from the aluminum industry, constructed a 220-ft (67-m) long, four-span continuous, aluminum girder bridge to carry traffic on Clive Road (86th Street) over Interstate 80 near Des Moines, Iowa. The bridge had four, welded I-shape girders that were fabricated in pairs with welded diaphragms between an exterior and an interior girder. The interior diaphragms between the girder pairs were bolted to girder brackets. A composite, reinforced concrete deck served as the roadway surface. The bridge, which had performed successfully for about 35 years of service, was removed in the fall of 1993 to make way for an interchange at the same location. Prior to the bridge demolition, load tests were conducted to monitor girder and diaphragm bending strains and deflections in the northern end span. Fatigue testing of the aluminum girders that were removed from the end spans were conducted by applying constant-amplitude, cyclic loads. These tests established the fatigue strength of an existing, welded, flange-splice detail and added, welded, flange-cover plates and horizontal web plate attachment details. This part, Part 2, of the final report focuses on the fatigue tests of the aluminum girder sections that were removed from the bridge and on the analysis of the experimental data to establish the fatigue strength of full-size specimens. Seventeen fatigue fractures that were classified as Category E weld details developed in the seven girder test specimens. Linear regression analyses of the fatigue test results established both nominal and experimental stress-range versus load cycle relationships (SN curves) for the fatigue strength of fillet-welded connections. The nominal strength SN curve obtained by this research essentially matched the SN curve for Category E aluminum weldments given in the AASHTO LRFD specifications. All of the Category E fatigue fractures that developed in the girder test specimens satisfied the allowable SN relationship specified by the fatigue provisions of the Aluminum Association. The lower-bound strength line that was set at two standard deviations below the least squares regression line through the fatigue fracture data points related well with the Aluminum Association SN curve. The results from the experimental tests of this research have provided additional information regarding behavioral characteristics of full-size, aluminum members and have confirmed that aluminum has the strength properties needed for highway bridge girders.

En aquest treball s’han radiomarcat, un total de 4 gripaus corredors (Bufo calamita) que posteriorment foren alliberats a la Bassa de l’Astor, per tal d’estudiar les estratègies comportamentals de l’espècie en una zona semi-àrida. Dels 4 animals alliberats, un es perdé als pocs dies, la resta foren seguits mitjançant radioseguiment uns 64 dies, entre finals d’hivern i principis de primavera del 2007. En el treball de seguiment s’anotà en cada una de les localitzacions la temperatura ambiental del moment i la freqüència a la qual emetia l’emissor. Donat que es tenien els emissors calibrats, a partir d’aquesta freqüència es podia obtenir la temperatura a la qual es trobava l’emissor, és a dir la temperatura corporal del gripau en aquest cas. Mitjançant programes estadístics s’ha pogut determinar que durant el període hivernal i principis de primavera existeix una relació estadísticament significativa entre la variació de la temperatura ambiental i la temperatura corporal dels gripaus. Aquesta relació no es dona però en el període estival. Això fa pensar que el comportament del calamita esdevé una forma de termoregulació actuant per tal d’evitar extrems crítics de temperatura i humitat. S’ha pogut determinar també que gràcies a les característiques dels refugis utilitzats en la zona d’estudi (munts de pedres o caus d’altres espècies) els gripaus aconsegueixen mantenir-se en ambients on la variació de temperatura és inferior a la variació de la temperatura exterior. Així la variació de la temperatura corporal dels gripaus és també inferior. Pel que fa als moviments entre els diferents refugis, aquests han variat en funció de cada animal. La distància mitja recorreguda en el total dels desplaçaments ha estat d’uns 185 metres lineals. Aquests desplaçaments s’han donat sempre en dies de pluja o l’endemà d’un dia de pluja.
