We propose a single optical photon source for quantum cryptography based on the acoustoelectric effect. Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating through a quasi-one-dimensional channel have been shown to produce packets of electrons that reside in the SAW minima and travel at the velocity of sound. In our scheme, the electron packets are injected into a p-type region, resulting in photon emission. Since the number of electrons in each packet can be controlled down to a single electron, a stream of single- (or N-) photon states, with a creation time strongly correlated with the driving acoustic field, should be generated. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Experiments have been performed in a blowdown supersonic wind tunnel to investigate the effect of arrays of sub-boundary layer vortex generators placed upstream of a normal shock/ boundary layer interaction. The investigation makes use of a recovery shock wave and the naturally grown turbulent boundary layer on the wind tunnel floor. Experiments were performed at Mach numbers of 1.5 and 1.3 and a freestream Reynolds number of 28 × 106. Two types of vortex generators were investigated - wedge-shaped and arrays of counter-rotating vanes. It was found that at Mach 1.5 the vane-type VGs eliminated and the wedge-type VGs greatly reduced the separation bubble under the shock. When placed in the supersonic part of the flow both VGs caused a wave pattern consisting of a shock, re-expansion and shock. The re-expansion and double shocks are undesirable features since they equate to increased total pressure losses and hence increased -wave drag. Furthermore there are indications that the vortex intensity is reduced by the normal shock/ boundary layer interaction. When the shock was located directly over the VGs there was no re-expansion present, but the 'damping' effect of the shock on the vortex persisted. It appears that the vortices produced by the wedge-shaped VGs lift off the surface more rapidly. Similar results were observed at Mach 1.3, where the flow was unseparated.

Details of a lumped parameter thermal model for studying thermal aspects of the frame size 180 nested loop rotor BDFM at the University of Cambridge are presented. Predictions of the model are verified against measured end winding and rotor bar temperatures that were measured with the machine excited from a DC source. The model is used to assess the thermal coupling between the stator windings and rotor heating. The thermal coupling between the stator windings is assessed by studying the difference of the steady state temperatures of the two stator end windings for different excitations. The rotor heating is assessed by studying the temperatures of regions of interest for different excitations.

We characterized the electrical conductance of well-structured multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which had post-treated by a rapid vacuum arc thermal annealing process and structure defects in these nanotubes are removed. We found that the after rapid vacuum arc annealing, the conductivity of well-structured MWCNTs can be improved by an order of magnitude. We also investigated the conductivity of MWCNTs bundle by the variation of temperatures. These results show that the conductance of annealed defect-free MWCNTs is sensitive to temperature imply the phonon scatting dominated the electron conductions. Compare to the well-structured MWCNTs, the defect scattering dominated the electron conduction in the as-grown control sample which has large amount of structure defects. A detail measurement of electron conduction from an individual well-structured MWCNT shows that the conductivity increases with temperatures which imply such MWCNTs exhibited semiconductor properties. We also produced back-gated field-effect transistors using these MWCNTs. It shows that the well-structured MWCNT can act as p-type semiconductor. © 2010 IEEE.

The flow through a terminating shock wave and the subsequent subsonic diffuser typically found in supersonic inlets has been simulated using a small-scale wind tunnel. Experiments have been conducted at an inflow Mach number of 1.4 using a dual-channel working section to produce a steady near-normal shock wave. The setup was designed so that the location of the shock wave could be varied relative to the diffuser. As the near-normal shock wave was moved downstream and into the diffuser, an increasingly distorted, three-dimensional, and separated flow was observed. Compared with the interaction of a normal shock wave in a constant area duct, the addition of the diffuser resulted in more prominent corner interactions. Microvortex generators were added to determine their potential for removing flow separation. Although these devices were found to reduce the extent of separation, they significantly increased three-dimensionality and even led to a large degree of flow asymmetry in some configurations. AC loss can be a significant problem for any applications that utilize or produce an AC current or magnetic field, such as an electric machine. The authors are currently investigating the electromagnetic properties of high temperature superconductors with a particular focus on the AC loss in coils made from YBCO superconductors. In this paper, a 2D finite element model based on the H formulation is introduced. The model is then used to calculate the transport AC loss using both a bulk approximation and modeling the individual turns in a racetrack-shaped coil. The coil model is based on the superconducting stator coils used in the University of Cambridge EPEC Superconductivity Group's superconducting permanent magnet synchronous motor design. The transport AC loss of a stator coil is measured using an electrical method based on inductive compensation using a variable mutual inductance. The simulated results are compared with the experimental results, verifying the validity of the model, and ways to improve the accuracy of the model are discussed. © 2010 IEEE.

The effect of AC and DC electric stimulations on the heart-rate and the entire body of Heteropneustis fossillis, Tilapia mossambica and Macrobrachium rosenbergii were studied and presented in kymograph tracings. The reaction of spinal cord in Puntius ticto, Heteropneustis fossilis and Tilapia mossambica to D. C. field was observed to find out its role in electric shocks. A test-check of the electrical resistance of a few species was also conducted. The effect of D. C. and A.C. on the body muscle was found to be the same as that in the case of frog. Different degrees of cardiac slowing were observed in AC and DC. Unbalanced galvanotropic movements were also noticed in spinal fishes.
