To supplement other environmental monitoring programs and to protect the health of people consuming fish from waters within this state, the state of Iowa conducts fish tissue monitoring. Since 1980, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region VII (U.S. EPA), and the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory (UHL) have cooperatively conducted annual statewide collections and analyses of fish for toxic contaminants. Beginning in 1983, this monitoring effort became the Regional Ambient Fish Tissue Monitoring Program (the RAFT program). Currently, the RAFT program is the only statewide fish contaminant-monitoring program in Iowa. Historically, the data generated from the RAFT program have enabled IDNR to document temporal changes in contaminant levels and to identify Iowa lakes and rivers where high levels of contaminants in fish potentially threaten the health of fish consuming Iowans. The Iowa RAFT monitoring program incorporates three different but equally important types of monitoring sites: 1) status, 2) trend, and 3) follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Candida glabrata follows C. albicans as the second or third most prevalent cause of candidemia worldwide. These two pathogenic yeasts are distantly related, C. glabrata being part of the Nakaseomyces, a group more closely related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Although C. glabrata was thought to be the only pathogenic Nakaseomyces, two new pathogens have recently been described within this group: C. nivariensis and C. bracarensis. To gain insight into the genomic changes underlying the emergence of virulence, we sequenced the genomes of these two, and three other non-pathogenic Nakaseomyces, and compared them to other sequenced yeasts. RESULTS: Our results indicate that the two new pathogens are more closely related to the non-pathogenic N. delphensis than to C. glabrata. We uncover duplications and accelerated evolution that specifically affected genes in the lineage preceding the group containing N. delphensis and the three pathogens, which may provide clues to the higher propensity of this group to infect humans. Finally, the number of Epa-like adhesins is specifically enriched in the pathogens, particularly in C. glabrata. CONCLUSIONS: Remarkably, some features thought to be the result of adaptation of C. glabrata to a pathogenic lifestyle, are present throughout the Nakaseomyces, indicating these are rather ancient adaptations to other environments. Phylogeny suggests that human pathogenesis evolved several times, independently within the clade. The expansion of the EPA gene family in pathogens establishes an evolutionary link between adhesion and virulence phenotypes. Our analyses thus shed light onto the relationships between virulence and the recent genomic changes that occurred within the Nakaseomyces.

Kuluvien vuosien aikana ei ole tehty kattavia tutkimuksia levyteollisuuden sähkönkulutuksista, joten on aika selvittää suurimpien sähkökäyttöjen kulutukset sekä muodostaa tutkittaville tehtaille energiataseet. Tutkittavia tehtaita ovat OSB- ja lastulevytehtaat. Yksittäisten sähkömoottoreiden kulutukset saadaan selville käyttämällä hyväksi teoreettisia lähteitä, kenttä-ja laboratoriotutkimusta. Ympäristölainsäädäntö ja siihen kiinteästi liittyvä lupakäytäntö muodostavat levyteollisuudelle yhden viimeaikojen suurimmista haasteista. Tulevaisuudessa lainsäädäntö tulee vielä entisestäänkin kiristymään. Euroopan ympäristölainsäädäntö perustuu pitkälti yhtenäislupadirektiiviin eli IPPC-direktiiviin. Direktiivin keskeinen osa on ympäristöluvan hankkiminen, koska teollista toimintaa ei voi harjoittaa ilman hyväksyttyä viranomaisen lupaa. Lupa myös velvoittaa toiminnanharjoittajan käyttämään parasta käyttökelpoista tekniikkaa päästöjen kontrolloinnissa. Yhdysvalloissa parhaan käyttökelpoisen tekniikan (BAT) vaatimus on sisälletty ympäristövirasto EPA:n MACT-standardeihin. Saatavilla tiedoilla on keskeinen rooli tehtaiden jokapäiväisessä toiminnassa.

We present a detailed evaluation of the seasonal performance of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system and the PSU/NCAR meteorological model coupled to a new Numerical Emission Model for Air Quality (MNEQA). The combined system simulates air quality at a fine resolution (3 km as horizontal resolution and 1 h as temporal resolution) in north-eastern Spain, where problems of ozone pollution are frequent. An extensive database compiled over two periods, from May to September 2009 and 2010, is used to evaluate meteorological simulations and chemical outputs. Our results indicate that the model accurately reproduces hourly and 1-h and 8-h maximum ozone surface concentrations measured at the air quality stations, as statistical values fall within the EPA and EU recommendations. However, to further improve forecast accuracy, three simple bias-adjustment techniques mean subtraction (MS), ratio adjustment (RA), and hybrid forecast (HF) based on 10 days of available comparisons are applied. The results show that the MS technique performed better than RA or HF, although all the bias-adjustment techniques significantly reduce the systematic errors in ozone forecasts.

A preliminary analyses of the possible contamination of superficial and underground water by the active ingredients of the pesticide products used in the surroundings of the urban area of Primavera do Leste, Mato Grosso, Brazil, was carried out. A description of the study region and of its environmental characteristics, which can favor the contamination of the local aquatic environment, was presented. The EPA screening criteria, the groundwater ubiquity score (GUS) and the criteria proposed by Goss were used to evaluate which pesticides might contaminate the local waters. Among the active ingredients studied, several present risks to the local aquatic environment.

European Directive (98/83/CE), compulsory after 2008, states that bromate in drinking water must be controlled at levels below 10 mg L-1. Supporting implementation of the Directive, the European Comission has established project SMT4-CT96 2134, in collaboration with various european institutions, aiming at the identification of the interferents to the current analytical method (Ionic Chromatography with Conductimetric Detection - IC/CD), their removal and the automation of pre-treatment and injection steps, as well as the development of alternative methods. EPAL, responsible for the water supply to a great deal of Portuguese regions, has taken steps to meet these requirements. Although not part of such project, this work (the result of a project conducted under a protocol of collaboration between EPAL SA and FCUL - Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), reports on studies of usefulness to laboratories planning to monitor bromate in ozone treated waters, in conditions different from those described in EPA 300.1. Simultaneous determination of bromide is justified by its role as bromate precursor.

This article presents an evaluation of the pollution of river water by herbicides used in the culture of irrigated rice in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Firstly, a theoretical evaluation was made using the approaches suggested by EPA-USA, the "Groundwater Ubiquity Score" index and the Goss method to estimate the pollution possibilities. Afterwards, a monitoring program was established for the rivers of the area from 2001 to 2003 to investigate the presence of herbicide residues. The results indicate that the herbicides clomazone and propanil are the ones with larger presence and frequency in the analyzed samples. The theoretical forecast was confirmed by the results of the monitoring program.

Phosphates have been used for lead immobilization in soils but the influence of soil type is not fully understood. In this work, lead chemical behaviour in two Brazilian latosoils (LA and LV) was studied via treatment with phosphates. The Pb concentration in Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) solutions was decreased in all treatments. After treatment with H3PO4 the Pb concentration in the LA remained within the regulatory limit established by EPA. The ecotoxicological results with Daphnia pulex showed that this treatment reduced the lead bioavailability. Sequential extraction analyses showed that the lead was transferred from the most available to the residual fraction. Relevant decrease of soluble lead was observed in all phosphate treatments.

Pesticides can be quite useful in agricultural production, however, some pesticides after application can reach and contaminate the hydric resource. Pesticide monitoring must be careful because it is expensive and lengthy. Thus, in this work, a theoretical prediction was made using the approaches suggested by EPA-USA, the Groundwater Ubiquity Score index (GUS) and the Goss method associated with physicochemical properties of 27 pesticides used in a region in the south of Brazil. The results of this work led to the identification of the pesticides that should be prioritized in the environmental monitoring due to their high potential for contaminating water resources.

Methane-rich landfill gas is generated when biodegradable organic wastes disposed of in landfills decompose under anaerobic conditions. Methane is a significant greenhouse gas, and landfills are its major source in Finland. Methane production in landfill depends on many factors such as the composition of waste and landfill conditions, and it can vary a lot temporally and spatially. Methane generation from waste can be estimated with various models. In this thesis three spreadsheet applications, a reaction equation and a triangular model for estimating the gas generation were introduced. The spreadsheet models introduced are IPCC Waste Model (2006), Metaanilaskentamalli by Jouko Petäjä of Finnish Environment Institute and LandGEM (3.02) of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. All these are based on the first order decay (FOD) method. Gas recovery methods and gas emission measurements were also examined. Vertical wells and horizontal trenches are the most commonly used gas collection systems. Emission measurements chamber method, tracer method, soil core and isotope measurements, micrometeorological mass-balance and eddy covariance methods and gas measuring FID-technology were discussed. Methane production at Ämmässuo landfill of HSY Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority was estimated with methane generation models and the results were compared with the volumes of collected gas. All spreadsheet models underestimated the methane generation at some point. LandGEM with default parameters and Metaanilaskentamalli with modified parameters corresponded best with the gas recovery numbers. Reason for the differences between evaluated and collected volumes could be e.g. that the parameter values of the degradable organic carbon (DOC) and the fraction of decomposable degradable organic carbon (DOCf) do not represent the real values well enough. Notable uncertainty is associated with the modelling results and model parameters. However, no simple explanation for the discovered differences can be given within this thesis.
