OBJECTIVE To compare the accuracy of radiography and computed tomography (CT) in predicting implant position in relation to the vertebral canal in the cervical and thoracolumbar vertebral column. STUDY DESIGN In vitro imaging and anatomic study. ANIMALS Medium-sized canine cadaver vertebral columns (n=12). METHODS Steinmann pins were inserted into cervical and thoracolumbar vertebrae based on established landmarks but without predetermination of vertebral canal violation. Radiographs and CT images were obtained and evaluated by 6 individuals. A random subset of pins was evaluated for ability to distinguish left from right pins on radiographs. The ability to correctly identify vertebral canal penetration for all pins was assessed both on radiographs and CT. Spines were then anatomically prepared and visual examination of pin penetration into the canal served as the gold standard. RESULTS Left/right accuracy was 93.1%. Overall sensitivity of radiographs and CT to detect vertebral canal penetration by an implant were significantly different and estimated as 50.7% and 93.4%, respectively (P<.0001). Sensitivity was significantly higher for complete versus partial penetration and for radiologists compared with nonradiologists for both imaging modalities. Overall specificity of radiographs and CT to detect vertebral canal penetration was 82.9% and 86.4%, respectively (P=.049). CONCLUSIONS CT was superior to radiographic assessment and is the recommended imaging modality to assess penetration into the vertebral canal. CLINICAL RELEVANCE CT is significantly more accurate in identifying vertebral canal violation by Steinmann pins and should be performed postoperatively to assess implant position.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of full-body linear X-ray scanning (LS) in multiple trauma patients in comparison to 128-multislice computed tomography (MSCT). Materials and Methods: 106 multiple trauma patients (female: 33; male: 73) were retrospectively included in this study. All patients underwent LS of the whole body, including extremities, and MSCT covering the neck, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. The diagnostic accuracy of LS for the detection of fractures of the truncal skeleton and pneumothoraces was evaluated in comparison to MSCT by two observers in consensus. Extremity fractures detected by LS were documented. Results: The overall sensitivity of LS was 49.2 %, the specificity was 93.3 %, the positive predictive value was 91 %, and the negative predictive value was 57.5 %. The overall sensitivity for vertebral fractures was 16.7 %, and the specificity was 100 %. The sensitivity was 48.7 % and the specificity 98.2 % for all other fractures. Pneumothoraces were detected in 12 patients by CT, but not by LS. 40 extremity fractures were detected by LS, of which 4 fractures were dislocated, and 2 were fully covered by MSCT. Conclusion: The diagnostic accuracy of LS is limited in the evaluation of acute trauma of the truncal skeleton. LS allows fast whole-body X-ray imaging, and may be valuable for detecting extremity fractures in trauma patients in addition to MSCT. Key Points: • The overall sensitivity of LS for truncal skeleton injuries in multiple-trauma patients was < 50 %.• The diagnostic reference standard MSCT is the preferred and reliable imaging modality.• LS may be valuable for quick detection of extremity fractures. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. While Coronary Angiography (CA) is the gold standard test to investigate coronary artery disease, Prospective gated-64 Slice Computed Tomography (Prosp-64CT) is a new non-invasive technology that uses the 64Slice computed tomography (64CT) with electrocardiographic gating to investigate coronary artery disease. The aim of the current study was to investigate the role of Body Mass Index (BMI) as a factor affecting occurrence of CA after a Prosp-64CT, as well as the quality of the Prosp-64CT. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the study population were described. A secondary analysis of data on patients who underwent a Prosp-64CT for evaluation of coronary artery disease was performed. Seventy seven patients who underwent Prosp-64CT for evaluation for coronary artery disease were included. Fifteen patients were excluded because they had missing data regarding BMI, quality of the Prosp-64CT or CA. Thus, a total of 62 patients were included in the final analysis. The mean age was 56.2 years. The mean BMI was 31.3 kg/m 2. Eight (13%) patients underwent a CA within one month of Prosp-64CT. Eight (13%) patients had a poor quality Prosp-64CT. There was significant association of higher BMI as a factor for occurrence of CA post Prosp-64CT (P<0.05). There was a trend, but no statistical significance was observed for the association of being obese and occurrence of CA (P=0.06). BMI, as well as obesity, were not found to be significantly associated with poor quality of Prosp-64CT (P=0.19 and P=0.76, respectively). In conclusion, BMI was significantly associated with occurrence of CA within one month of Prosp-64CT. Thus, in patients with a higher BMI, diagnostic investigation with both tests could be avoided; rather, only a CA could be performed. However, the relationship of BMI to quality of Prosp-64CT needs to be further investigated since the sample size of the current study was small.^

The dorsal valve of a Pleistocene terebratulid brachiopod, Terebratula scillae Seguenza, 1871, has developed a malignant cyst due to colonization in vivo by an endolithic sponge. This trace fossil is a compound boring and bioclaustration structure, representing a boring that has grown in unison with the growth of the cyst. The brachiopod has grown to adult size and growthlines indicate that it was colonised by the sponge when about half grown. Malformation of the shell may not have caused the death of the brachiopod and the sponge does not appear to have outlived its host; both symbionts seem to have died more or less simultaneously. This minus-minus relationship of two symbionts is considered to be a case of 'accidental symbiosis'.

Endolithic bioerosion is difficult to analyse and to describe, and it usually requires damaging of the sample material. Sponge erosion (Entobia) may be one of the most difficult to evaluate as it is simultaneously macroscopically inhomogeneous and microstructurally intricate. We studied the bioerosion traces of the two Australian sponges Cliona celata Grant, 1826 (sensu Schönberg 2000) and Cliona orientalis Thiele, 1900 with a newly available radiographic technology: high resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (MCT). MCT allows non-destructive visualisation of live and dead structures in three dimensions and was compared to traditional microscopic methods. MCT and microscopy showed that C. celata bioerosion was more intense in the centre and branched out in the periphery. In contrast, C. orientalis produced a dense, even trace meshwork and caused an overall more intense erosion pattern than C. celata. Extended pioneering filaments were not usually found at the margins of the studied sponge erosion, but branches ended abruptly or tapered to points. Results obtained with MCT were similar in quality to observations from transparent optical spar under the dissecting microscope. Microstructures could not be resolved as well as with e.g. scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Even though sponge scars and sponge chips were easily recognisable on maximum magnification MCT images, they lacked the detail that is available from SEM. Other drawbacks of MCT involve high costs and presently limited access. Even though MCT cannot presently replace traditional techniques such as corrosion casts viewed by SEM, we obtained valuable information. Especially for the possibility to measure endolithic pore volumes, we regard MCT as a very promising tool that will continue to be optimised. A combination of different methods will produce the best results in the study of Entobia.

The deformation and damage mechanisms of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy laminates deformed in shear were studied by means of X-ray computed tomography. In particular, the evolution of matrix cracking, interply delamination and fiber rotation was ascertained as a function of the applied strain. In order to provide quantitative information, an algorithm was developed to automatically determine the crack density and the fiber orientation from the tomograms. The investigation provided new insights about the complex interaction between the different damage mechanisms (i.e. matrix cracking and interply delamination) as a function of the applied strain, ply thickness and ply location within the laminate as well as quantitative data about the evolution of matrix cracking and fiber rotation during deformation

ABSTRACT The study of soil structure is of vital importance in different fields of science and technology. Soil structure controls important physical and biological processes in soil-plant-microbial systems. Those processes are dominated by the geometry of soil pore structure, and a quantitative characterization of the spatial heterogeneity of the pore space geometry is beneficial for prediction of soil physical properties. The technology of X-ray computed tomography (CT) allows us to obtain three-dimensional digital images of the inside of a soil sample providing information on soil pore geometry and enabling the study of the pores without disturbing the samples. Fractal geometry and mathematical morphological techniques have been proposed as powerful tools to analyze and quantify geometrical features. Fractal dimensions of pore space, pore-solid interface and pore size distribution are indicators of soil structure complexity. Minkowski functionals and morphological functions provide means to measure fundamental geometrical features of three-dimensional geometrical objects, that is, volume, boundary surface, mean boundary surface curvature, and connectivity. Soil features such as pore-size distribution, pore space volume or pore-solid surface can be altered by different soil management practices. In this work we analyze CT images of soil samples from two nearby areas with contrasting management practices. We performed a set of geometrical measures, some of them from mathematical morphology, to assess and quantify any possible difference that tillage may have caused on the soil.

Single photon emission with computed tomography (SPECT) hexamethylphenylethyleneamineoxime technetium-99 images were analyzed by an optimal interpolative neural network (OINN) algorithm to determine whether the network could discriminate among clinically diagnosed groups of elderly normal, Alzheimer disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VD) subjects. After initial image preprocessing and registration, image features were obtained that were representative of the mean regional tissue uptake. These features were extracted from a given image by averaging the intensities over various regions defined by suitable masks. After training, the network classified independent trials of patients whose clinical diagnoses conformed to published criteria for probable AD or probable/possible VD. For the SPECT data used in the current tests, the OINN agreement was 80 and 86% for probable AD and probable/possible VD, respectively. These results suggest that artificial neural network methods offer potential in diagnoses from brain images and possibly in other areas of scientific research where complex patterns of data may have scientifically meaningful groupings that are not easily identifiable by the researcher.

This paper studies the fracturing process in low-porous rocks during uniaxial compressive tests considering the original defects and the new mechanical cracks in the material. For this purpose, five different kinds of rocks have been chosen with carbonate mineralogy and low porosity (lower than 2%). The characterization of the fracture damage is carried out using three different techniques: ultrasounds, mercury porosimetry and X-ray computed tomography. The proposed methodology allows quantifying the evolution of the porous system as well as studying the location of new cracks in the rock samples. Intercrystalline porosity (the smallest pores with pore radius < 1 μm) shows a limited development during loading, disappearing rapidly from the porosimetry curves and it is directly related to the initial plastic behaviour in the stress–strain patterns. However, the biggest pores (corresponding to the cracks) suffer a continuous enlargement until the unstable propagation of fractures. The measured crack initiation stress varies between 0.25 σp and 0.50 σp for marbles and between 0.50 σp and 0.85 σp for micrite limestone. The unstable propagation of cracks is assumed to occur very close to the peak strength. Crack propagation through the sample is completely independent of pre-existing defects (porous bands, stylolites, fractures and veins). The ultrasonic response in the time-domain is less sensitive to the fracture damage than the frequency-domain. P-wave velocity increases during loading test until the beginning of the unstable crack propagation. This increase is higher for marbles (between 15% and 30% from initial vp values) and lower for micrite limestones (between 5% and 10%). When the mechanical cracks propagate unstably, the velocity stops to increase and decreases only when rock damage is very high. Frequency analysis of the ultrasonic signals shows clear changes during the loading process. The spectrum of treated waveforms shows two main frequency peaks centred at low (~ 20 kHz) and high (~ 35 kHz) values. When new fractures appear and grow the amplitude of the high-frequency peak decreases, while that of the low-frequency peak increases. Besides, a slight frequency shift is observed towards higher frequencies.

The aim of analogue model experiments in geology is to simulate structures in nature under specific imposed boundary conditions using materials whose rheological properties are similar to those of rocks in nature. In the late 1980s, X-ray computed tomography (CT) was first applied to the analysis of such models. In early studies only a limited number of cross-sectional slices could be recorded because of the time involved in CT data acquisition, the long cooling periods for the X-ray source and computational capacity. Technological improvements presently allow an almost unlimited number of closely spaced serial cross-sections to be acquired and calculated. Computer visualization software allows a full 3D analysis of every recorded stage. Such analyses are especially valuable when trying to understand complex geological structures, commonly with lateral changes in 3D geometry. Periodic acquisition of volumetric data sets in the course of the experiment makes it possible to carry out a 4D analysis of the model, i.e. 3D analysis through time. Examples are shown of 4D analysis of analogue models that tested the influence of lateral rheological changes on the structures obtained in contractional and extensional settings.

OBJECTIVES We sought to determine whether the transmural extent of scar (TES) explains discordances between dobutamine echocardiography (DbE) and thallium single-photon emission computed tomography (Tl-SPECT) in the detection of viable myocardium (VM). BACKGROUND Discrepancies between DbE and Tl-SPECT are often attributed to differences between contractile reserve and membrane integrity, but may also reflect a disproportionate influence of nontransmural scar on thickening at DbE. METHODS Sixty patients (age 62 +/- 12 years; 10 women and 50 men) with postinfarction left ventricular dysfunction underwent standard rest-late redistribution Tl-SPECT and DbE. Viable myocardium was identified when dysfunctional segments showed Tl activity >60% on the late-redistribution image or by low-dose augmentation at DbE. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (ceMRI) was used to divide TES into five groups: 0%, 75% of the wall thickness replaced by scar. RESULTS As TES increased, both the mean Tl uptake and change in wall motion score decreased significantly (both p < 0.001). However, the presence of subendocardial scar was insufficient to prevent thickening; >50% of segments still showed contractile function with TES of 25% to 75%, although residual function was uncommon with TES >75%. The relationship of both tests to increasing TES was similar, but Tl-SPECT identified VM more frequently than DbE in all groups. Among segments without scar or with small amounts of scar (50% were viable by SPECT. CONCLUSIONS Both contractile reserve and perfusion are sensitive to the extent of scar. However, contractile reserve may be impaired in the face of no or minor scar, and thickening may still occur with extensive scar. (C) 2004 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.
