A scheme in which carbon ion bunches are accelerated to a high energy and density by a laser pulse (∼10 W/cm) irradiating cone targets is proposed and investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. The laser pulse is focused by the cone and drives forward an ultrathin foil located at the cone's tip. In the course of the work, best results were obtained employing target configurations combining a low-Z cone with a multispecies foil transversely shaped to match the laser intensity profile. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is a well-known coagulation-flotation system applied at large scale for microalgae harvesting. Compared to conventional harvesting technologies DAF allows high cell recovery at lower energy demand. By replacing microbubbles with microspheres, the innovative Ballasted Dissolved Air Flotation (BDAF) technique has been reported to achieve the same algae cell removal efficiency, while saving up to 80% of the energy required for the conventional DAF unit. Using three different algae cultures (Scenedesmus obliquus, Chlorella vulgaris and Arthrospira maxima), the present work investigated the practical, economic and environmental advantages of the BDAF system compared to the DAF system. 99% cells separation was achieved with both systems, nevertheless, the BDAF technology allowed up to 95% coagulant reduction depending on the algae species and the pH conditions adopted. In terms of floc structure and strength, the inclusion of microspheres in the algae floc generated a looser aggregate, showing a more compact structure within single cell alga, than large and filamentous cells. Overall, BDAF appeared to be a more reliable and sustainable harvesting system than DAF, as it allowed equal cells recovery reducing energy inputs, coagulant demand and carbon emissions. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

In this paper, we have reported the CO2 solubility in different pure alkyl carbonate solvents (EC, DMC, EMC, DEC) and their binary mixtures as EC/DMC, EC/EMC, and EC/DEC and for electrolytes [solvent + lithium salt] LiX (X = LiPF6, LiTFSI, or LiFAP) as a function of the temperature and salt concentration. To understand the parameters that influence the structure of the solvents and their ability to dissolve CO2, through the addition of a salt, we first analyzed the viscosities of EC/DMC + LiX mixtures by means of a modified Jones–Dole equation. The results were discussed considering the order or disorder introduced by the salt into the solvent organization and ion solvation sphere by calculating the effective solute ion radius, rs. On the basis of these results, the analysis of the CO2 solubility variations with the salt addition was then evaluated and discussed by determining specific ion parameters Hi by using the Setchenov coefficients in solution. This study showed that the CO2 solubility has been affected by the shape, charge density, and size of the ions, which influence the structuring of the solvents through the addition of a salt and the type of solvation of the ions.

A systematic theoretical study on the adsorption of steam and its thermal decomposition products on carbon both zigzag and armchair surface was performed to provide molecular-level understanding of the reaction activity of all these reactants in biomass steam gasification process. All the calculations were carried out using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+g(d,p) level. The structures of carbonaceous surfaces, all reactants and surface complexes were optimized and characterized. Based on the value of adsorption heat been obtained from the calculation, the activity of all reactants can be ordered as: O > O2 >H2 >H >OH >H2O for both zigzag and armchair surface, and the adsorption style is physisorption to water molecule and chemisorption to the other dissociated components.

We have resolved the solid-liquid phase transition of carbon at pressures around 150GPa. High-pressure samples of different temperatures were created by laser-driven shock compression of graphite and varying the initial density from 1.30g/cm3 to 2.25g/cm3. In this way, temperatures from 5700K to 14,500K could be achieved for relatively constant pressure according to hydrodynamic simulations. From measuring the elastic X-ray scattering intensity of vanadium K-alpha radiation at 4.95keVat a scattering angle of 126°, which is very sensitive to the solid-liquid transition, we can determine whether the sample had transitioned to the fluid phase. We find that samples of initial density 1.3g/cm3 and 1.85g/cm3 are liquid in the compressed states, whereas samples close to the ideal graphite crystal density of 2.25g/cm3 remain solid, probably in a diamond-like state.

Dry reforming is a promising reaction to utilise the greenhouse gases CO2 and CH4. Nickel-based catalysts are the most popular catalysts for the reaction, and the coke formation on the catalysts is the main obstacle to the commercialisation of dry reforming. In this study, the whole reaction network of dry reformation on both flat and stepped nickel catalysts (Ni(111) and Ni(211)) as well as nickel carbide (flat: Ni3C(001); stepped: Ni3C(111)) is investigated using density functional theory calculations. The overall reaction energy profiles in the free energy landscape are obtained, and kinetic analyses are utilised to evaluate the activity of the four surfaces. By careful examination of our results, we find the following regarding the activity: (i) flat surfaces are more active than stepped surfaces for the dry reforming and (ii) metallic nickel catalysts are more active than those of nickel carbide, and therefore, the phase transformation from nickel to nickel carbide will reduce the activity. With respect to the coke formation, the following is found: (i) the coke formation probability can be measured by the rate ratio of CH oxidation pathway to C oxidation pathway (r(CH)/r(C)) and the barrier of CO dissociation, (ii) on Ni(111), the coke is unlikely to form, and (iii) the coke formations on the stepped surfaces of both nickel and nickel carbide can readily occur. A deactivation scheme, using which experimental results can be rationalised, is proposed.

The activation of oxygen molecules is an important issue in the gold-catalyzed partial oxidation of alcohols in aqueous solution. The complexity of the solution arising from a large number of solvent molecules makes it difficult to study the reaction in the system. In this work, O-2 activation on an Au catalyst is investigated using an effective approach to estimate the reaction barriers in the presence of solvent. Our calculations show that O-2 can be activated, undergoing OOH* in the presence of water molecules. The OOH* can readily be formed on Au(211) via four possible pathways with almost equivalent free energy barriers at the aqueous-solid interface: the direct or indirect activation of O-2 by surface hydrogen or the hydrolysis of O-2 following a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism or an Eley-Rideal mechanism. Among them, the Eley-Rideal mechanism may be slightly more favorable due to the restriction of the low coverage of surface H on Au(211) in the other mechanisms. The results shed light on the importance of water molecules on the activation of oxygen in gold-catalyzed systems. Solvent is found to facilitate the oxygen activation process mainly by offering extra electrons and stabilizing the transition states. A correlation between the energy barrier and the negative charge of the reaction center is found. The activation barrier is substantially reduced by the aqueous environment, in which the first solvation shell plays the most important role in the barrier reduction. Our approach may be useful for estimating the reaction barriers in aqueous systems.

Reactivity of supported gold catalysts is a hot topic in catalysis for many years. This communication reports an investigation on the dissociation of molecular hydrogen at the perimeter sites of Au/TiO2 and the spillover of hydrogen atoms from the gold to the support using density functional theory calculations. It is found that the heterolytic dissociation is favoured in comparison with homolytic dissociation of molecular hydrogen at the perimeter sites. However, the surface oxygen of the rutile TiO2(110) surface at these sites can be readily passivated by the formed OH, suggesting that further dissociation of molecular hydrogen may occur at pure gold sites.

Nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene) was reported to exhibit a good activity experimentally as an electrocatalyst of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the cathode of fuel cells under the condition of electropotential of similar to 0.04 V (vs. NNE) and pH of 14. This material is promising to replace or partially replace the conventionally used Pt. In order to understand the experimental results. ORR catalyzed by N-graphene is studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations under experimental conditions taking the solvent, surface adsorbates, and coverages into consideration. Two mechanisms, i.e., dissociative and associative mechanisms, over different N-doping configurations are investigated. The results show that N-graphene surface is covered by O with 1/6 monolayer, which is used for reactions in this work. The transition state of each elementary step was identified using four different approaches, which give rise to a similar chemistry. A full energy profile including all the reaction barriers shows that the associative mechanism is more energetically favored than the dissociative one and the removal of O species from the surface is the rate-determining step. Ab initio total energy calculations within a density functional theory framework have been performed for CO and atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface. Optimised geometries and chemisorption energies for CO and O on four high-symmetry sites, namely the top, bridge, fee hollow and hcp hollow sites, are presented, the coverage in all cases being 0.25 ML. The differences in CO adsorption energies between these sites are found to be small, suggesting that the potential energy surface for CO diffusion across Pt(111) is relatively flat. The 5 sigma and 2 pi molecular orbitals of CO are found to contribute to bonding with the metal. Some mixing of the 4 sigma and 1 pi molecular orbitals with metal states is also observed. For atomic oxygen, the most stable adsorption site is found to be the fee hollow site, followed in decreasing order of stability by the hcp hollow and bridge sites, with the top site being the least stable. The differences in chemisorption energies between sites for oxygen are larger than in the case of CO, suggesting a higher barrier to diffusion for atomic oxygen. The co-adsorption of CO and O has also been investigated. Calculated chemisorption energies for CO on an O/fcc-precovered surface show that of the available chemisorption sites, the top site at the oxygen atom's next-nearest neighbour surface metal atom is the most stable, with the other four sites calculated bring at least 0.29 eV less stable. The trend of CO site stability in the coadsorption system is explained in terms of a 'bonding competition' model. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We have performed ab initio density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on Ru(0001). Several reaction pathways and transition states are identified. A much higher reaction barrier compared to that on Pt(111) is determined, confirming that the Ru is very inactive for CO oxidation under UHV conditions. The origin of the reaction barrier was analyzed. It is found that in the transition state the chemisorbed O atom sits in an unfavorable bonding site and a significant competition for bonding with the same substrate atoms occurs between the CO and the chemisorbed O, resulting in the high barrier. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations show that the activation of the chemisorbed O atom from the initial hcp hollow site (the most stable site) to the bridge site is the crucial step for the reaction. The CO oxidation on Ru(0001) via the Eley-Rideal mechanism has also been investigated. A comparison with previous theoretical work has been made. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Density functional theory has been used to study the adsorption of CH3 on Ni(111). CH3 is found to adsorb strongly at all four high symmetry sites of the Ni(111) surface. Calculated adsorption energies of CH3 on the different sites are in the following order: hcp approximate to fcc>bridge>top. The bonding and structures of CH3 on the different sites are analysed in detail. An important factor, namely three-centre bonding between carbon, hydrogen and nickel which contributes to the 'soft' C-H vibrational frequency of CH3 on Ni(111), and may determine the preferred chemisorption site, is stressed. Density functional theory calculations are carried out for Rh(111)-p(2 x 2)-CO, Rh(111)-p(2 x 2)-S, Rh(111)-p(2 x 2)-(S + CO), Rh(111)-p(3 x 3)-CO, Rh(111)-p(3 x 3)-S and Rh(111)-p(3 x 3)-(S + CO), aiming to shed some light on the S poisoning effect. Geometrical structures of these systems are optimized and chemisorption energies are determined. The presence of S does not significantly influence the geometrical structure and chemisorption energy of CO and vice versa, which strongly suggests that the interaction between CO and S on the Rh(111) surface is mainly short-range in nature. The long range electronic effect for the dramatic attenuation of the CO methanation activity by sulfur is likely to be incorrect. It is suggested that an ensemble effect may be dominant in the catalytic deactivation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultraintense laser pulses with a few-cycle rising edge are ideally suited to accelerating ions from ultrathin foils, and achieving such pulses in practice represents a formidable challenge. We show that such pulses can be obtained using sufficiently strong and well-controlled relativistic nonlinearities in spatially well-defined near-critical-density plasmas. The resulting ultraintense pulses with an extremely steep rising edge give rise to significantly enhanced carbon ion energies consistent with a transition to radiation pressure acceleration.

Abstract The dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone is very important in the manufacture of nylon. Copper-based catalysts are the most popular catalysts for this reaction, and on these catalysts the reaction mechanism and active site are in debate. In order to elucidate the mechanism and active site of the cyclohexanol dehydrogenation on copper-based catalysts, density functional theory with dispersion corrections were performed on up to six facets of copper in two different oxidation states: monovalent copper and metallic copper. By calculating the surface energies of these facets, Cu(111) and Cu2O(111) were found to be the most stable facets for metallic copper and for monovalent copper, respectively. On these two facets, all the possible elementary steps in the dehydrogenation pathway of cyclohexanol were calculated, including the adsorption, dehydrogenation, hydrogen coupling and desorption. Two different reaction pathways for dehydrogenation were considered on both surfaces. It was revealed that the dehydrogenation mechanisms are different on these two surfaces: on Cu(111) the hydrogen belonging to the hydroxyl is removed first, then the hydrogen belonging to the carbon is subtracted, while on Cu2O(111) the hydrogen belonging to the carbon is removed followed by the subtraction of the hydrogen in the hydroxyl group. Furthermore, by comparing the energy profiles of these two surfaces, Cu2O(111) was found to be more active for cyclohexanol dehydrogenation than Cu(111). In addition, we found that the coordinatively unsaturated copper sites on Cu2O(111) are the reaction sites for all the steps. Therefore, the coordinatively unsaturated copper site on Cu2O(111) is likely to be the active site for cyclohexanol dehydrogenation on the copper-based catalysts.
