Concentrations of sulfide, S°, and thiosulfate were determined in waters of the Baltic Sea. Microquantities of these compounds were observed in oxic waters. Concentration levels of reduced sulfur compounds in Baltic oxic waters were very close to levels of the Black Sea oxic zone. Thiosulfate and S° were predominate compounds in oxic water whereas sulfide was a predominant compound of Baltic waters high in hydrogen sulfide. Conclusion was made that during sedimentation in oxic waters anaerobic microorganisms along with aerobic bacteria take part in mineralization of organic matter. They exist on surfaces and in microniches of particles of organic detritus.

An analysis of variations in 137Cs and 90Sr concentrations in Baltic Sea surface waters after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was performed. Instability of 137Cs concentrations during the short-term observations was found, when they differed 2- to 3-fold. Concentrations of 90Sr appeared to be more stable; meanwhile, their deviations sometimes exceeded ranges of experimental errors. By variations in the monthly average values of radionuclide concentrations in surface waters of the Baltic Sea in 1989-1995, no trend of water self-purification was observed. Theoretical results obtained confirmed a potential of formation and propagation of patches with increased concentrations of 137Cs in the southeastern Baltic Sea. The most reliable factor that controlled the process of self-purification of Baltic Sea water appeared to be the mean annual value of radionuclide concentration. Pronounced divergences were obtained between the measured and calculated mean annual concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr in surface waters of the Baltic Sea in 1989-2001. These divergences are explained by potential influence of waters from the Gulf of Bothnia and by other additional supplies of radionuclides to marine environment, which were not included into mathematical models.

Manganese-iron accumulates in the Kiel Bay were investigated with regard to their occurence, chemical composition and formation. Three morphologically different types were identified: a) growth on mussels, b) spherical nodules (ca. 1-3 cm) and c) disshaped symetrical and asymetrical nodules (up to 10 cm). Average values from 110 accumulates representing the three types were: Mn 29.3%, Fe 10.0%, Co 77 ppm, Ni 97 ppm, Cu 21 ppm and Zn 340 ppm. Accumulates on mussels showed the highest trace metal concentrations. A growth rate of ca. 0.6 mm/yr for type (a) was estimated. Heavy metal concentrations were determined in ca. 60 sediment and 30 pore water samples, and in 110 Baltic sea water samples. During certain periods, large increases in Mn values (up to 400 (µg/l) were found in the deeper waters. These concentrations develop during periods of strong stagnant conditions in the sediments where dissolution of Mn oxides, and diffusion mobilizes the Mn into the overlying waters. The manganese is then reprecipitated close to the boundary of the O2-enriched surface waters. This critical O2-concentration was found to be 40% saturation. In the Kiel Bay, Mn-Fe-accumulates are found in a zone which marks the upper limit sometimes reached by the deep waters of lower O2-concentration. Additionally, the availability of larger particles (especially stones or mussels) on the sediment surface is necessary. These conditions are met in the Kiel Bay in a water depth of 20-28 m at several places.

In this study, retrievals of the medium resolution imaging spectrometer (MERIS) reflectances and water quality products using 4 different coastal processing algorithms freely available are assessed by comparison against sea-truthing data. The study is based on a pair-wise comparison using processor-dependent quality flags for the retrieval of valid common macro-pixels. This assessment is required in order to ensure the reliability of monitoring systems based on MERIS data, such as the Swedish coastal and lake monitoring system (http.vattenkvalitet.se). The results show that the pre-processing with the Improved Contrast between Ocean and Land (ICOL) processor, correcting for adjacency effects, improve the retrieval of spectral reflectance for all processors, Therefore, it is recommended that the ICOL processor should be applied when Baltic coastal waters are investigated. Chlorophyll was retrieved best using the FUB (Free University of Berlin) processing algorithm, although overestimations in the range 18-26.5%, dependent on the compared pairs, were obtained. At low chlorophyll concentrations (< 2.5 mg/m**3), random errors dominated in the retrievals with the MEGS (MERIS ground segment processor) processor. The lowest bias and random errors were obtained with MEGS for suspended particulate matter, for which overestimations in te range of 8-16% were found. Only the FUB retrieved CDOM (Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter) correlate with in situ values. However, a large systematic underestimation appears in the estimates that nevertheless may be corrected for by using a~local correction factor. The MEGS has the potential to be used as an operational processing algorithm for the Himmerfjärden bay and adjacent areas, but it requires further improvement of the atmospheric correction for the blue bands and better definition at relatively low chlorophyll concentrations in presence of high CDOM attenuation.

Seasonal distributions of ostracode species from the Bay of Kiel, western Baltic Sea (Bokniseck, 'Hausgarten') were studied at seven observation stations located between 6 - 23.5 m water depth. During the period from December 1973 to March 1975, 175 samples were taken every two weeks from the sediment surface at each station. Environmental factors were measured simultaneously with sampling. Most of the ostracode species were present in all of the samples throughout the year; four species were found to be seasonal. On the other hand, the population densities of each of the examined ostracode species, as revealed by countings, indicate marked seasonal variations. These variations are attributed to changes in length rate and timing of the reproductive cycles of the different ostracode species, effected mainly by food supply. Maxima in the abundance of the ostracode species with short (1/2 - 1 month) life cycles, occurred simultaneously with peaks of food supply in spring and autumn, whereas the maxima abundance of ostracodes with longer (10 - 12 months) life cycles was delayed.
