Madagascan frogs of the mantellid genus Mantella have been a rich source of alkaloids derived from dietary arthropods. Two species of frogs, inhabiting swamp forest, contain a unique set of alkaloids, previously proposed, based only on GC-MS and GC-FTIR data, to represent dehydro analogues of the homopumiliotoxins. The major alkaloid of this set, alkaloid 235C (2), now has been isolated in sufficient quantities (ca. 0.3 mg) to allow determination of the structure by NMR analysis. The structure of alkaloid 235C proved to be a 7,8-dehydro-8-desmethylpumiliotoxin. A comparison is presented between the mass, infrared, and H-1 NMR spectra of 235C (2) and a synthetic dehydrohomopumiliotoxin (1), initially proposed incorrectly as the structure for 235C.

A novel phosphonoacetaldehyde-oxidizing activity was detected in cell-extracts of the marine bacterium Roseovarius nubinhibens ISM grown on 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid (2-AEP; ciliatine). Extracts also contained 2-AEP transaminase and phosphonoacetate hydrolase activities. These findings indicate the existence of a biological route from 2-AEP via phosphonoacetaldehyde for the production of phosphonoacetate, which has not previously been shown to be a natural product. The three enzymes appear to constitute a previously-unreported pathway for the mineralization of 2-AEP which is a potentially important source of phosphorus in the nutrient-stressed marine environment.

The potential use of negative electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) in the characterisation of the three polyacetylenes common in carrots (Daucus carota) has been assessed. The MS scans have demonstrated that the polyacetylenes undergo a modest degree of in-source decomposition in the negative ionisation mode while the positive ionisation mode has shown predominantly sodiated ions and no [M+H](+) ions. Tandem mass spectrometric (MS/MS) studies have shown that the polyacetylenes follow two distinct fragmentation pathways: one that involves cleavage of the C3-C4 bond and the other with cleavage of the C7-C8 bond. The cleavage of the C7-C8 bond generated product ions m/z 105.0 for falcarinol, m/z 105/107.0 for falcarindiol, m/z 147.0/149.1 for falcarindiol-3-acetate. In addition to these product ions, the transitions m/z 243.2 -> 187.1 (falcarinol), m/z 259.2 -> 203.1 (falcarindiol), m/z 301.2 -> 255.2/203.1 (falcarindiol-3-acetate), mostly from the C3-C4 bond cleavage, can form the basis of multiple reaction monitoring (MRM)-quantitative methods which are poorly represented in the literature. The 'MS3' experimental data confirmed a less pronounced homolytic cleavage site between the C11-C12 bond in the falcarinol-type polacetylenes. The optimised liquid chromatography (LC)/MS conditions have achieved a baseline chromatographic separation of the three polyacetylenes investigated within 40 min total run-time. The means to detect the irradiation of food has been investigated for many years. In recent times radiolytic products, termed 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-CBs), have been identified as excellent markers of irradiation in lipid-containing foods. An ELISA test was developed, which was capable of detecting a number of these compounds in irradiated chicken meat. A polyclonal antiserum was raised to a 2-CB containing a terminal carboxyl group conjugated to a carrier protein. This antiserum was highly specific for cyclobutanones containing C-10 and C-12 side chains. During assay validation the limit of detection of the assay was calculated to be 0.064 pg of 2-CB per gram of fat, within- and between-assay variations ranged from 6.7 to 18%. During experimental studies, chicken meat irradiated at doses ranging from 2.5 to 10 kGy were assayed and correctly identified as being treated. Quantitative comparisons between the ELISA and CC-MS revealed a good correlation (r(2) = 0.913) between the two methodologies in concentrations of 2-CB detected in irradiated samples.

The fourteen essays of this volume engage in distinct ways with the matter of motion in early modern Spanish poetics, without limiting the dialectic of stasis and movement to any single sphere or manifestation. Interrogation of the interdependence of tradition and innovation, poetry, power and politics, shifting signifiers, the intersection of topography and deviant temporalities, the movement between the secular and the sacred, tensions between centres and peripheries, issues of manuscript circulation and reception, poetic calls and echoes across continents and centuries, and between creative writing and reading subjects, all demonstrate that Helgerson's central notion of conspicuous movement is relevant beyond early sixteenth-century secular poetics, By opening it up we approximate a better understanding of poetry's flexible spatio-temporal co-ordinates in a period of extraordinary historical circumstances and conterminous radical cultural transformation

A rapidly increasing number of Web databases are now become accessible via
their HTML form-based query interfaces. Query result pages are dynamically generated
in response to user queries, which encode structured data and are displayed for human
use. Query result pages usually contain other types of information in addition to query
results, e.g., advertisements, navigation bar etc. The problem of extracting structured data
from query result pages is critical for web data integration applications, such as comparison
shopping, meta-search engines etc, and has been intensively studied. A number of approaches
have been proposed. As the structures of Web pages become more and more complex, the
existing approaches start to fail, and most of them do not remove irrelevant contents which
may a®ect the accuracy of data record extraction. We propose an automated approach for
Web data extraction. First, it makes use of visual features and query terms to identify data
sections and extracts data records in these sections. We also represent several content and
visual features of visual blocks in a data section, and use them to ¯lter out noisy blocks.
Second, it measures similarity between data items in di®erent data records based on their
visual and content features, and aligns them into di®erent groups so that the data in the
same group have the same semantics. The results of our experiments with a large set of
Web query result pages in di®erent domains show that our proposed approaches are highly
e®ective.
