The influence of residual oxygen in nitrogen on the formation of AlN-Al matrix by reactive infiltration has been investigated. Increasing the oxygen content from 10 ppm upwards decreased the nitride content in the matrix from 64 to 6%, Based on the analysis of the availability of oxygen at the Al-melt/gas interface, three distinct scenarios have been proposed (i) at lowest values, oxygen does not interfere with either infiltration or nitridation reaction; (ii) at intermediate values, nitridation is suppressed, however infiltration continues; and (iii) at a critical upper value, the melt passivates without any infiltration. This phenomenon offers control of the AlN/Al ratio in the matrix and the possibility of creation of microstructural gradierits by the appropriate choice of gas mixtures. Aluminium nitride (AlN)-Al matrices reinforced with Al2O3 particulate have been fabricated by reactive infiltration of Al-2% Mg alloy into Al2O3 preforms in N-2 in the temperature range of 900-1075 degreesC. The growth of composites of useful thickness was facilitated by the presence of a Mg-rich external getter, in the absence of which composite growth is self-limiting and terminates prematurely. Successful growth of composites has been attributed to the reduction in residual oxygen partial pressure brought about by the reaction with oxygen of highly volatile Mg in the getter alloy. The microstructure of the matrix consists of AlN-rich regions contiguous with the particulate with metal-rich channels in-between, thereby suggesting that nitridation initiates by preferential wicking of alloy along the particle surfaces. The increase in nitride content of the matrix with temperature is consistent with hardness values that vary between similar to3 and 10 GPa. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Electron beam surface melting has been used to characterise the phase content formed in a number of model 1200 series Al alloys with increasing solidification velocity in the range 2–50 mm s−1, typical of that experienced during continuous strip casting. Phases were extracted from the Al matrix and analysed by X-ray diffraction. A qualitative solidification microstructure selection map has been produced, showing that, for a given Fe content of 0.55 wt.%: with increasing solidification velocity the metastable aluminides FeAl6 and FeAlm displace equilibrium Fe4Al13 at Si contents

To resolve many flow features accurately, like accurate capture of suction peak in subsonic flows and crisp shocks in flows with discontinuities, to minimise the loss in stagnation pressure in isentropic flows or even flow separation in viscous flows require an accurate and low dissipative numerical scheme. The first order kinetic flux vector splitting (KFVS) method has been found to be very robust but suffers from the problem of having much more numerical diffusion than required, resulting in inaccurate computation of the above flow features. However, numerical dissipation can be reduced by refining the grid or by using higher order kinetic schemes. In flows with strong shock waves, the higher order schemes require limiters, which reduce the local order of accuracy to first order, resulting in degradation of flow features in many cases. Further, these schemes require more points in the stencil and hence consume more computational time and memory. In this paper, we present a low dissipative modified KFVS (m-KFVS) method which leads to improved splitting of inviscid fluxes. The m-KFVS method captures the above flow features more accurately compared to first order KFVS and the results are comparable to second order accurate KFVS method, by still using the first order stencil. In this article, a single-phase, one-domain macroscopic model is developed for studying binary alloy solidification with moving equiaxed solid phase, along with the associated transport phenomena. In this model, issues such as thermosolutal convection, motion of solid phase relative to liquid and viscosity variations of the solid-liquid mixture with solid fraction in the mobile zone are taken into account. Using the model, the associated transport phenomena during solidification of Al-Cu alloys in a rectangular cavity are predicted. The results for temperature variation, segregation patterns, and eutectic fraction distribution are compared with data from in-house experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental results. To highlight the influence of solid phase movement on convection and final macrosegregation, the results of the current model are also compared with those obtained from the conventional solidification model with stationary solid phase. By including the independent movement of the solid phase into the fluid transport model, better predictions of macrosegregation, microstructure, and even shrinkage locations were obtained. Mechanical property prediction models based on microstructure will benefit from the improved accuracy of this model.

Experimental studies were performed to investigate the role and influence of grain movement on macrosegregation and microstructure evolution during equiaxed solidification. Casting experiments were performed with a grain-refined Al-Cu alloy in a rectangular sand mold. For the aluminum alloy studied, the equiaxed grains are lighter than the bulk melt and thus float up. Experiments were designed to investigate floatation phenomena of equiaxed grains in the presence of thermosolutal convection. Cooling curves were recorded at key locations in both the casting and the chill. Quantitative image analysis and spatial chemical analysis were performed on the solidified casting to observe the chemical and microstructural inhomogeneity created by the melt convection and solid floatation. Several notable features that can be attributed to grain movement were observed in temperature histories, macrosegregation patterns, and microstructures. In our experiments, the floatation of grains influences the thermal conditions and the overall flow direction in the casting cavity. In some cases, the induced flow resulting from the grain movement caused a flow reversal. This in turn influences the solidification direction, microstructure evolution, and the overall macrosegregation behavior.

Effects of strain rate (10(-4)-10(-2) s(-1)) on tensile and compressive strength of the Al-Si alloy and Al-Si/graphite composite are investigated. The strain hardening exponent value of the composite was more than that of the alloy for all strain rates during tensile and compressive loading. The yield stress of the composite was more than that of the ultimate tensile strength of the alloy for all strain rates. Tensile and compressive properties of the alloy and composite are dependent on strain rates. The negative strain rate sensitivity was observed for the composite and alloy at lower strain rates during the compression and tension loading respectively. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The Bénard–Marangoni convection is studied in a three-dimensional container with thermally insulated lateral walls and prescribed heat flux at lower boundary. The upper surface of the incompressible, viscous fluid is assumed to be flat with temperature dependent surface tension. A Galerkin–Tau method with odd and even trial functions satisfying all the essential boundary conditions except the natural boundary conditions at the free surface has been used to solve the problem. The critical Marangoni and Rayleigh numbers are determined for the onset of steady convection as a function of aspect ratios x0 and y0 for the cases of Bénard–Marangoni, pure Marangoni and pure Bénard convections. It is observed that critical parameters are decreasing with an increase in aspect ratios. The flow structures corresponding to the values of the critical parameters are presented in all the cases. It is observed that the critical parameters are higher for case with heat flux prescribed than those corresponding to the case with prescribed temperature. The critical Marangoni number for pure Marangoni convection is higher than critical Rayleigh number corresponding to pure Bénard convection for a given aspect ratio whereas the reverse was observed for two-dimensional infinite layer.

Fracture toughness and fracture mechanisms in Al2O3/Al composites are described. The unique flexibility offered by pressureless infiltration of molten Al alloys into porous alumina preforms was utilized to investigate the effect of microstructural scale and matrix properties on the fracture toughness and the shape of the crack resistance curves (R-curves). The results indicate that the observed increment in toughness is due to crack bridging by intact matrix ligaments behind the crack tip. The deformation behavior of the matrix, which is shown to be dependent on the microstructural constraints, is the key parameter that influences both the steady-state toughness and the shape of the R-curves. Previously proposed models based on crack bridging by intact ductile particles in a ceramic matrix have been modified by the inclusion of an experimentally determined plastic constraint factor (P) that determines the deformation of the ductile phase and are shown to be adequate in predicting the toughness increment in the composites. Micromechanical models to predict the crack tip profile and the bridge lengths (L) correlate well with the observed behavior and indicate that the composites can be classified as (i) short-range toughened and (ii) long-range toughened on the basis of their microstructural characteristics.

Nanoembedded aluminum alloys with bimetallic dispersoids of Sn and Pb of compositions Sn82–Pb18, Sn64–Pb36, and Sn54–Pb46 were synthesized by rapid solidification. The two phases, face-centered-cubic Pb and tetragonal Sn solid-solution, coexist in all the particles. The crystallographic relation between the two phases and the matrix depends upon the solidification pathways adopted by the particles. For Al–(Sn82–Pb18), we report a new orientation relation given by [011]Al//[010]Sn and (o11)A1//(101)Sn. Pb exhibits a cube-on-cube orientation with Al in few particles, while in others no orientation relationship could be observed. In contrast, Pb in Sn64–Pb36 and Sn54–Pb46 particles always exhibits cube-on-cube orientation with the matrix. Sn does not show any orientation relationship with Al or Pb in these cases. Differential scanning calorimetry studies revealed melting at eutectic temperature for all compositions, although solidification pathways are different. Attempts were made to correlate these with the melting and heterogeneous nucleation characteristics.

In this article, the effect of initial microstructure on the texture evolution in 2014 Al alloy during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) through route A has been reported. Three heat treatment conditions were chosen to generate the initial microstructures, namely (i) the recrystallization anneal (as-received), (ii) solution treatment at 768 K for 1 h, and (iii) solution treatment (768 K for 1 h) plus aging at 468 K for 5 h. Texture analyses were performed using orientation distribution function (ODF) method. The texture strength after ECAP processing was different for the three samples in the order, solutionised > solutionised plus aged condition > as-received. The prominent texture components were A (E) /(A) over bar (E) and B(E)/(B) over bar (E) in addition to several weaker components for the three materials. The strong texture evolution in solutionised condition has been attributed to higher strain hardening of the matrix due to higher amount of solute. In case of the as-received as well as solutionised plus aged alloy, the weaker texture could be due to the strain scattering from extensive precipitate fragmentation and dissolution during ECAP.

The removal of native oxide from Si (1 1 1) surfaces was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectra (SIMS) depth profiles. Two different oxide removal methods, performed under ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions, were carried out and compared. The first cleaning method is thermal desorption of oxide at 900 degrees C. The second method is the deposition of metallic gallium followed by redesorption. A significant decrease in oxygen was achieved by thermal desorption at 900 degrees C under UHV conditions. By applying a subsequent Ga deposition/redesorption, a further reduction in oxygen could be achieved. We examine the merits of an alternative oxide desorption method via conversion of the stable SiO(2) surface oxide into a volatile Ca(2)O oxide by a supply of Ga metals. Furthermore, ultra thin films of pure silicon nitride buffer layer were grown on a Si (1 1 1) surface by exposing the surface to radio-frequency (RF) nitrogen plasma followed by GaN growth. The SIMS depth profile shows that the oxygen impurity can be reduced at GaN/beta-Si(3)N(4)/Si interfaces by applying a subsequent Ga deposition/redesorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We present the first results of an observational programme undertaken to map the fine structure line emission of singly ionized carbon ([ CII] 157 : 7409 mum) over extended regions using a Fabry Perot spectrometer newly installed at the focal plane of a 100 cm balloon- borne far- infrared telescope. This new combination of instruments has a velocity resolution of similar to 200 km s(-1) and an angular resolution of 1.'5. During the first flight, an area of 30' x 15' in Orion A was mapped. These observations extend over a larger area than previous observations, the map is fully sampled and the spectral scanning method used enables reliable estimation of the continuum emission at frequencies adjacent to the [ CII] line. The total [ CII] line luminosity, calculated by considering up to 20% of the maximum line intensity is 0.04% of the luminosity of the far- infrared continuum. We have compared the [ CII] intensity distribution with the velocity- integrated intensity distributions of (CO)-C-13(1- 0), CI(1- 0) and CO( 3- 2) from the literature. Comparison of the [ CII], [ CI] and the radio continuum intensity distributions indicates that the largescale [ CII] emission originates mainly from the neutral gas, except at the position of M 43, where no [ CI] emission corresponding to the [ CII] emission is seen. Substantial part of the [ CII] emission from here originates from the ionized gas. The observed line intensities and ratios have been analyzed using the PDR models by Kaufman et al. ( 1999) to derive the incident UV flux and volume density at a few selected positions. The models reproduce the observations reasonably well at most positions excepting the [ CII] peak ( which coincides with the position of theta(1) Ori C). Possible reason for the failure could be the simplifying assumption of a homogeneous plane parallel slab in place of a more complicated geometry.

Al-Zn-Mg/SiCP composites processed by a liquid metal processing (stir casting) technique have been microstructurally characterised in the as-cast and extruded conditions. Uniform distribution of SiCP is observed with few defects, such as particle clusters, which are due to partial wetting and associated gas porosity. The constituent particles are associated with SiCP although their composition remains unaffected compared with the control alloy. Hot extrusion of the composite using a shear type die showed banding of particles in the extruded direction with 9 vol.% composite. Such defects however, are not predominant in 18% SiCP extruded composites. The presence Of Mg2Si is detected at the particle matrix interface as well as in the matrix.
