Speech, language and communication therapy action plan

This is the first update newsletter of the Speech, language and communication therapy action plan. The action plan was developed by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) with the aim that all children and young people at risk of or presenting with speech, language or communication needs will be able to benefit from timely support and integrated services that best meet their requirements.The Public Health Agency (PHA), in partnership with the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB), has been tasked with implementing the action plan.The update includes news on the publication of the Healthy child, health future framework and highlights other points of progress so far, including the development of the Family Support NI website. There is also an invite for parents to join a focus group to influence and assist with the implementation of the action plan.�

Cervical screening: Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Testing for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) as triage and test of cure was introduced into the Northern Ireland Cervical Screening Programme on Monday 28 January 2013. This policy change will significantly alter the screening pathway for women with a mild dyskaryosis or borderline smear result. The link between HR-HPV infection and the development of cervical cancer has now been clearly established, with almost 100% of cervical cancers containing HPV DNA. Women with no evidence of HR-HPV infection are extremely unlikely to develop cervical cancer in the short to medium term. HPV triage is the process whereby HR-HPV testing is used to manage women with low grade cervical abnormalities. Only 15-20% of women with a borderline or mild smear result have a significant abnormality that needs treatment. HR-HPV testing is effective in identifying which women may need treatment and allows colposcopy resources to be allocated more effectively. The test of cure process is being introduced because it is now known that women with a normal or low grade smear test, and who are HR-HPV negative at six months after treatment, are at very low risk of residual disease. These women do not need to be recalled for another screening appointment for three years. The test of cure process means all post-treatment smears (at six months) that are reported as normal, borderline or mild dyskaryosis will be tested for HR-HPV. Those women who are HR-HPV positive will remain at colposcopy. HR-HPV negative women can be safely returned to recall in three years. It is estimated that the HR-HPV test of cure will allow approximately 80% of women who have been through treatment to avoid undergoing annual smear tests. These FAQs answer the most common and important queries in relation to HPV and the new screening process, and were distributed to all GPs in Northern Ireland. 10,000 Voices poster

Patient experience is recognised as a key element in the delivery of quality healthcare. In line with this, the Public Health Agency (PHA) is carrying out an extensive piece of work across all Health and Social Care Trusts (HSCTs), with the aim of introducing a more patient-focused approach to services and shaping future healthcare in Northern Ireland. This project, called '10,000 Voices', gives patients, as well as their families and carers, the opportunity to share their overall experience and highlight anything important, such as what they particularly liked or disliked about the experience.This A3 poster introduces the '10,000 Voices' idea and gives participants the website and contact details they need to take part.��

Epidemiology of Gastrointestinal Infections in Northern ireland 2012

The Public Health Agency (PHA) has a lead role in protecting the population from infection and environmental hazards through a range of core functions including communicable disease surveillance and monitoring, operational support & advice, and education, training & research. The effective management of infectious disease depends on high quality surveillance. Surveillance of communicable gastrointestinal infectious disease provides timely information so that public health action can result. The range of surveillance outputs is broad and includes: � Weekly surveillance - weekly internal report to the Health Protection team. � Monthly/quarterly and annual returns – to various external bodies including the Food Standards Agency, European Centre and Disease Control, Epidemiology of Foodborne Infections Group and Department of Health, Social Services & Public Safety. � Annual reports and data – published yearly on the PHA website. � Analysis of outbreaks – descriptive and/or analytical epidemiological analysis �

ASIST training helping to tackle suicide

Work to help communities prevent suicide has taken a further step forward with over 50 ASIST Trainers from across Northern Ireland completing the new ASIST 11 upgrader trainer course.The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) enables people in a position of trust to recognise risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide.The Public Health Agency (PHA) funded the upgrading training as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting quality training for a range of individuals, communities and organisations.Madeline Heaney, the PHA's strategic lead for Suicide Prevention, explained: "This programme enables people who have been trained to become more willing, ready and able to help those at risk of suicide, which can be vital in a crisis situation.�"We want to empower people who are in position of responsibility and care to know what to do if they find themselves in a situation where someone is at risk of taking their own lives."�ASIST has been delivered in Northern Ireland since 2003 and the course is designed for all caregivers or any person in a position of trust, making it useful for a range of people. The training is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, teachers, counsellors, youth workers, police and prison staff, school support staff, clergy, community volunteers and the general public.This most recent training, which ASIST Trainers must complete, builds on previous editions and offers advances that help meet current challenges and provides new opportunities in helping to reduce suicides within communities.The intensive Trainer Upgrade was held in Derry/ Londonderry.More information on looking after your mental health and the support which is available across Northern Ireland can be found at www.mindingyourhead.info��You can also talk to your GP for advice.If you or someone you know is in distress or despair, call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000. AAA screening programme wallet card

This wallet card has been produced to help maximise awareness of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening programme in Northern Ireland. It provides the website address of the screening programme - www.aaascreening.info - as well as email and telephone contact details for the screening programme office. A postal address is also included. The wallet cards will be distributed to eligible men through the following channels, among others: public events, eg talks with men's groups, Farm Families Health Checks programme;health information stands in shopping centres, supermarkets etc;GP practices;pharmacies. �

La memòria de projecte de final de carrera objecte d'aquest document, sintetitza lasolució realitzada d'un portal Web per a la gestió d'una protectora d'animals amb la finalitat de fomentar i facilitar als usuaris, l'adopció d'animals abandonats.El portal Web té com a principals objectius, oferir una interfície gràfica fàcil de ferservir i intuïtiva en la interacció, per tal que tot tipus d'usuaris d'Internet senserestriccions de coneixements puguin gaudir amb comoditat del lloc. El resultat s'haobtingut fent ús de tecnologies basades amb la plataforma .NET de Microsoft com Visual Studio 2010 pel que fa al desenvolupament, AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) pel que fa a l'actualització asíncrona dels continguts de les pàgines, i Microsoft SQL Server com a motor de la base de dades.

Aquesta és la realització del TFC en l'àrea de .NET de en quant al "Desenvolupament ràpid de llocs web". L'objectiu global del projecte és explorar la tecnologia WebMatrix de Microsoft, proveint una web per la PYME Cerámicas Alba, dedicada a les reformes i la venda al detall de mobiliari i ceràmiques per a banys i cuines. La PYME necessita amb certa urgència una web per publicar d'una manera ràpida informació de l'empresa. La web tindrà dues parts: back-end i el front-end. El back-end pretén permetre al client administrar les parts dinàmiques de la web com ara productes i dades de l'empresa. El front-end serà la part visible per els usuaris d'Internet. Com a proveïdor de la web, és requisit disposar d'eines i un entorn per a generar i publicar la web, WebMatrix és una tecnologia de Microsoft que s'hi ajusta i la definida en el TFC.

Ontologies turístiques geogràfiques

En els propers anys, la Web semàntica i les tecnologies que porta associades sembla que constituiran els eixos vertebradors d'una nova manera d'entendre la Xarxa. Aquesta deixarà de ser un mer repositori d'informació per a convertir-se en un ens capaç de generar coneixement per si sol, on màquines i usuaris treballin de manera col·laborativa. En aquest treball s'analitzarà l'evolució que ha sofert el mitjà i el significat d'una Web semàntica, passant per algunes de les tecnologies que hi donen suport. Per a entendre com es confereix significat a l'estructura d'una web, s'estudiaran de manera incremental els diferents llenguatges que permeten construir-la: XML, RDF i OWL. L'estructura conceptual que pren la informació, la representació de la qual és codificada amb els llenguatges mencionats anteriorment, es tractarà tant en un vessant teòric com en un de pràctic. Així, s'analitzarà el concepte i el procés de creació d'una ontologia i, mitjançant el programari Protégé, es crearà una taxonomia adequada en l'àmbit del turisme o lleure de muntanya. Un altre aspecte que s'analitzarà en el document és la nova generació de bases de dades que ha sorgit com a conseqüència del nou suport de la informació, on preval la relació que s'estableix entre les dades per sobre d'aquestes. Així doncs, s'estudiaran les característiques bàsiques de les bases de dades XML natives i es farà una breu introducció als llenguatges de modificació i consulta que suporten. Aquests aspectes s'aplicaran de manera pràctica sobre la base de dades eXist, mitjançant l'ús de les instàncies de l'ontologia creada. Finalment es desenvoluparà una aplicació web que permeti portar a la pràctica algunes de les tecnologies estudiades. El context en què se centrarà el cas pràctic serà el mateix que s'ha representat mitjançant l'ontologia i permetrà comprovar el funcionament d'una web explotada de manera semàntica.
