The article provides a broad view of Celso Furtado's interpretation of the political development of Brazil, spread over his several writings. Furtado's approach was dominated by his analytical effort to understand the effects of the distinct socioeconomic foundations of the United States and Brazil on the development of their respective structures of power. The persistent influence of the Brazilian colonial patriarchal regime was reflected on the fragility of democracy as a political arrangement throughout most of Brazilian history, including the oligarchic republic before 1930. The mismatch between the industrialization process and the inertia of the political system led to unstable populism and eventually to the attempt of military arbitration in 1964.

”Lojumaan tai kuolemaan Välimeren auringonpaisteeseen” –Kyproksen suomalaiset rauhanturvaajat sanomalehdistössä keväällä 1964

Tutkielmani aiheena on suomalaisten rauhanturvaajien kuvaus sanomalehdissä keväällä 1964. Vertailen neljän päivittäin ilmestyneen suomalaisen sanomalehden näkemyksiä rauhanturvaajista keskenään, jotta voin näin tunnistaa niiden välisiä eroja ja samankaltaisuuksia. Tutkittavat lehdet ovat Helsingin Sanomat, Uusi Suomi, Kansan Uutiset ja Ilkka. Tarkastelen sitä kuvaa, joka Yhdistyneiden Kansakuntien Kyproksen rauhanturvaoperaatioon lähteneistä rauhanturvaajista muodostui maalis- ja kesäkuun välisenä aikana keväällä 1964. Erityisesti huomioin mahdollista ristiriitaa siinä kuvasivatko lehdet rauhanturvaajien palvelusta Kyproksella palkallisena lomana vai osallistumisena sotaan. Keväällä 1964 Suomi päätti osallistua käynnistyvään YK:n Kyproksen rauhanturvaoperaatioon. Työni jäsentyy kevään tapahtumien kautta. Suomalaispataljoonan kokoaminen ja lähtö erottuu erillisenä kokonaisuutena, samoin toukokuussa 1964 tapahtunut suomalaisrauhanturvaajan väkivaltainen kuolema Kyproksella sekä lopuksi kesäkuussa 1964 julki tulleet rauhanturvaajien eroanomukset. Aihe hallitsi uutiskevättä ja kaikki lehdet kirjoittivat siitä runsaasti. Lehtien välillä on selkeitä eroja niiden näkemyksissä rauhanturvaajista, mutta tarkasteluajanjakson aikana myös yksittäisten lehtien kuvaus muuttui. Suurin ero on Helsingin Sanomissa ja Uudessa Suomessa, joiden näkemys rauhanturvaajista muuttui kolmen kuukauden aikana täysin. Alussa lehdet kuvasivat innostuneesti pataljoonaa, joka katsottiin suomalaisen sotilasperinteen ylpeiksi jatkajiksi, mutta eroanomusten myötä lehdet ryhtyivät kritisoimaan pataljoonalaisia ”käpykaartilaisiksi”. Kansan Uutisten kuvausta hallitsi lävitse koko tarkasteluajanjakson lehden näkemys Kyproksen rauhanturvaajista osana sen vastustamaa Suomen ulkopoliittista suuntausta. Ilkka kuvasi vähiten Kyproksen pataljoonaa ja se kuvaus oli tutkimuksen lehdistä vähiten vakava.
