2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic acid has been shown to be oxidized via the 3-oxoadipate pathway in the leaves of Tecoma stans. The formation of 2-carboxy-cis,cis-muconic acid, a muconolactone, 3-oxoadipic acid and carbon dioxide during its metabolism has been demonstrated using an extract of Tecoma leaves. The first reaction of the pathway, viz., the conversion of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate to 2-carboxy-cis,cis-muconic acid has been shown to be catalysed by an enzyme designated as 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate 2,3-oxygenase. The enzyme has been partially purified and a few of its properties studied. The enzyme is very labile with a half-life of 3--4 h. It is maximally active with 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate as the substrate and does not exhibit any activity with catechol, 4-methyl catechol, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, etc. However, 2,3-dihydroxy-p-toluate and 2,3-dihydroxy-p-cumate are also oxidized by the enzyme by about 38% and 28% respectively, compared to 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate. Sulfhydryl reagents inhibit the enzyme reaction and the inhibition can be prevented by preincubation of the enzyme with the substrate. Substrate also affords protection to the enzyme against thermal inactivation. Sulfhydryl compounds strongly inhibit the reaction and the inhibition cannot be prevented by preincubation of the enzyme with its substrates. Data on the effect of metal ions as well as metal chelating agents suggest that copper is the metal cofactor of the enzyme. Evidence is presented which suggests that iron may not be participating in the overall catalytic mechanism.

This study reports an investigation of the ion exchange treatment of sodium chloride solutions in relation to use of resin technology for applications such as desalination of brackish water. In particular, a strong acid cation (SAC) resin (DOW Marathon C) was studied to determine its capacity for sodium uptake and to evaluate the fundamentals of the ion exchange process involved. Key questions to answer included: impact of resin identity; best models to simulate the kinetics and equilibrium exchange behaviour of sodium ions; difference between using linear least squares (LLS) and non-linear least squares (NLLS) methods for data interpretation; and, effect of changing the type of anion in solution which accompanied the sodium species. Kinetic studies suggested that the exchange process was best described by a pseudo first order rate expression based upon non-linear least squares analysis of the test data. Application of the Langmuir Vageler isotherm model was recommended as it allowed confirmation that experimental conditions were sufficient for maximum loading of sodium ions to occur. The Freundlich expression best fitted the equilibrium data when analysing the information by a NLLS approach. In contrast, LLS methods suggested that the Langmuir model was optimal for describing the equilibrium process. The Competitive Langmuir model which considered the stoichiometric nature of ion exchange process, estimated the maximum loading of sodium ions to be 64.7 g Na/kg resin. This latter value was comparable to sodium ion capacities for SAC resin published previously. Inherent discrepancies involved when using linearized versions of kinetic and isotherm equations were illustrated, and despite their widespread use, the value of this latter approach was questionable. The equilibrium behaviour of sodium ions form sodium fluoride solution revealed that the sodium ions were now more preferred by the resin compared to the situation with sodium chloride. The solution chemistry of hydrofluoric acid was suggested as promoting the affinity of the sodium ions to the resin.

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella kristillisessä parisuhdetyössä toimivien, HNMKY:n vapaaehtoisten ryhmänjohtajien motivaatiota ja sitoutumista sekä näiden välistä yhteyttä. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, keitä HNMKY:n avioliittoleirin vapaaehtoiset ryhmänjohtajat ovat, mitkä ovat heidän motivaatiot ryhmänvetäjinä sekä, mihin he ovat sitoutuneet ja, mikä heitä sitouttaa. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin erityisesti arvoihin ja organisaatioon sitoutumista. Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto koostui Paremman avioliiton perheleirien 2007 ja 2008 vapaaehtoisien parisuhderyhmien ryhmänjohtajina toimineilta kerätystä kyselyaineistosta (N=163). Tutkimusote oli kvantitatiivinen. Teoreettinen viitekehys muodostui motiivien osalta Claryn ja kumppaneiden kehittelemästä The Volunteer Functions Inventory -mallista (VFI), joka on kehitetty vapaaehtoisten motiivien mittaamiseen sekä muusta aiemmasta motiivitutkimuksesta. Sitoutumisen osalta teoreettinen viitekehys muodostui vapaaehtoisten sitoutumiseen liittyvästä teoriasta sekä aiemmasta sitoutumisen tutkimuksesta. Parisuhdetyön ryhmänvetäjiltä löydettiin faktorianalyyseilla aiemmasta tutkimuksesta osittain poiketen neljä erilaista motivaatiota: 1) Oman parisuhteen hoito, 2) Auttamisen arvot, 3) Itselle saaminen sekä 4) Toimiminen yhdessä. Merkittävin vapaaehtoisuuteen motivoiva tekijä oli Oman parisuhteen hoito, joka sisälsi oman parisuhteen hoidon lisäksi omien vaikeuksien käsittelyä sekä vertaistukeen liittyviä motivaatioita. Auttamisen arvot sisälsivät toisten auttamisen tärkeyden sekä kristilliset arvot. Itselle saaminen piti sisällä oppimismotiiveja sekä omat vaikeudet motiiveja. Toimiminen yhdessä käsittää itsetuntomotiiveja ja sosiaalisia motiiveja. Näistä Itselle saaminen ja Toimiminen yhdessä liittyivät merkittävästi toisiinsa. Ryhmänvetäjiltä löydettiin faktorianalyyseilla neljä erilaista sitotuttavaa tekijää: 1) Saatu tuki, 2) Osa identiteettiä, 3) Palkitsevuus sekä 4) Onnistuminen auttamisessa. Merkittävin syy vapaaehtoisuuteen sitoutumiseen on Saatu tuki, joka sisältää sekä HNMKY:ltä että myös muilta ryhmänjohtajilta saadun tuen. Osa identiteettiä sisältää sen, että ryhmänjohtamisesta on tullut osa minua, ja että toiminta on vahvistanut itsetuntoa sekä sopii elämäntilanteeseen. Tähän sisältyi myös toisten auttamisen tärkeys. Sitouttavista tekijöistä vahvimmin toisiinsa liittyvät Saatu tuki ja Osa identiteettiä. Motivaatio ja sitoutuminen liittyvät monella tavoin toisiinsa. Merkittävimmin toisiinsa liittyvät motivaatiossa Auttamisen arvot ja sitoutumisessa Osa identiteettiä. Näille ihmisille auttamisen arvoissa tärkeää ovat kristillisten arvojen edistäminen parisuhdetyössä sekä merkittävien asioiden tekeminen itselle tärkeässä tehtävässä. Heitä motivoi toisten auttaminen ja sama asia sitouttaa heitä myös vapaaehtoiseen parisuhdetyöhön. Niitä ryhmänjohtajia, joita motivoi vapaaehtoistoimintaan oma parisuhteen hoito, sitouttaa tähän työhön sen palkitsevuus. Niitä, joita motivoivat Auttamisen arvot tai Itselle saaminen, sitouttaa Saatu tuki, Osa identiteettiä ja Palkitsevuus. Kun motivoivana tekijänä on Toiminen yhdessä, silloin sitouttaa Saatu tuki ja Osa identiteettiä. Ryhmänjohtajat ovat erittäin sitoutuneita HNMKY:n arvoihin ja opetukseen. Vastaajille on erittäin merkittävää kristillisten arvojen edistäminen parisuhdetyössä. Kristillisyyden ja sen arvojen merkityksellisyys, auttamisen sekä oman parisuhteen ja perheen tärkeys liittyvät toisiinsa. The addition of AMP to the crystalline and homogeneous mung bean nucleotide pyrophosphatase [EC 3.6.1.9]altered its electrophoretic mobility. AMP was tightly bound to the enzyme and was not removed on passage through a column of Sephadex G-25 or on electrophoresis. The molecular weight of the native and AMP-modified enzymes were 65,000 and 136,000, respectively. The properties of the native enzyme such as the pH (9.4) and temperature (49 °C) optima, inhibition by EDTA, reversal of EDTA-inhibition by Zn2+ and Co2+, were not altered on dimerization by AMP. The AMP-modified enzyme had a linear time-course of reaction, unlike the native enzyme which exhibited a biphasic time-course of reaction. The AMP-modified enzyme was irreversibly denatured by urea. AMP concentrations larger than 100 μM inhibited linearly the activity of the AMP-modified enzyme. ADP and ATP inhibited the activity in a sigmoidal manner. Km and V of the native and AMP-modified enzymes were, 0.25 mImage and 0.58 mImage ; and 3.3 and 2.5, respectively.

Peristaltic motion of a micropolar fluid is studied for small amplitudes of peristalic waves under low Reynolds number analysis. The effect of pressure gradient on the secondary motion reveals many interesting and useful results. The critical value of the pressure gradient ensuing the reversal effect in both velocity field and microrotation is evaluated and discussed.

1. Cell-free extracts of Arthrobacter synephrinum catalyse the oxidation of 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylacetate. 2. The product of oxidation was characterized as 2-hydroxy-5-carboxymethylmuconate semialdehyde from its chemical behaviour as well as from nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectra. 3. A 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate 2,3-dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.15) was partially purified from A. synephrinum. 4. The enzyme had a Km of 25 micrometer towards its substrate and exhibited typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics. 5. The enzyme also catalysed the oxidation of 3,4-dihydroxymandelate and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionate, at reaction rates of 0.5 and 0.04 respectively of that for 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate. 6. The enzyme was sensitive to treatment with thiol-specific reagents. 7. The molecular weight of the enzyme as determined by Sephadex G-200 chromatography was approx. 282000.

The present paper proposes a new set of tariff reforms that can achieve both objectives at the same time.

Objectives Melanoma of the skin is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. Given the high incidence of sunburn in children and the level of sun protection provided by parents is often infrequent and/or insufficient, this research employed qualitative methodology to examine parents' beliefs about their young child's sun safe behaviour. Methods Parents (N = 21; n = 14 mothers, n = 7 fathers) of children aged 2–5 years participated in focus groups to identify commonly held beliefs about their decision to sun protect their child. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Results Parents generally had knowledge of the broad sun safe recommendations; however, the specific details of the recommendations were not always known. Parents reported adopting a range of sun-protective measures for their child, which depended on the time of year. A range of advantages (e.g. reducing the risk of skin cancer, developing good habits early and parental peace of mind), disadvantages (e.g. false sense of safety and preventing vitamin D absorption), barriers (e.g. child refusal) and facilitators (e.g. routine and accessibility) to performing sun safe practices were identified. Normative pressures and expectations also affected parents' motivation to be sun safe for their child. Conclusions These identified beliefs can be used to inform interventions to improve sun safe behaviours in young children who reside in a region that has the highest skin cancer incidence in the world.

Valinomycin is a highly flexible cyclic dodecadepsipeptide that transports ions across membranes. Such a flexibility in the conformation is required for its biological function since it has to encounter a variety of environments and liganding state. Exploration of conformational space of this molecule is therefore important and is one of the objectives of the present study that has been carried out by means of high temperature Molecular Dynamics. Further, the stability of the known bracelet-like structure of the uncomplexed valinomycin and the inherent flexibility around this structure has been investigated. The uncomplexed form of valinomycin has been simulated at 75–100 K for 1 ns in order to elucidate the average conformational properties. An alanine-analog of valinomycin has been simulated under identical conditions in order to evaluate the effect of sidechain on the conformational properties, The studies confirm the effect of sidechain on conformational equilibrium.

A three-dimensional zinc arsenate with an interrupted zeolitic framework (-IIO), [C4N3H16](2)[Zn-5(AsO4)(4)(HAsO4)(2)], I has been synthesized solvothermally. The structure is built up from ZnO4, AsO4 and HAsO4 tetrahedral units connected alternatively through their vertices forming the 3-D structure possessing one-dimensional channels bound by 10 T-atoms (T = Zn, As), The framework density of the structure is 10.4 T-atoms which indicates considerable openness in its structure. This paper considers the role for a Framework Convention on Global Health in addressing key challenges in women’s health at a global level. Part I analyses the conceptualization of health in terms of human rights and the linking of women’s rights and human rights. Part II seeks to identify pressing issues for women’s health, articulating 10 key challenges for women’s health. Part III considers the proposal for a Framework Convention on Global Health to meet global health needs. Finally, Part IV asks whether international law can provide a valuable platform to support recognition and achievement of women’s health rights and identifies key elements for supporting and promoting women’s health.

Propargyloxycarbonyl group is used as a protecting group for the hydroxyl groups of serine, threonine and tyrosine. The propargyloxycarbonyl derivatives of these hydroxy amino acids are stable to acidic and basic reagents commonly employed in peptide synthesis. The deprotection of the O-Poc derivatives using tetrathiomolybdate does not affect commonly used protecting groups such as N-Boc, N-Cbz, N-Fmoc, methyl and benzyl esters. The di-and tripeptides synthesized using O-Poc derivatives of serine, threonine and tyrosine are stable, isolable compounds and give the hydroxy peptides in good yields when treated with tetrathiomolybdate.

The commercial acrylic fibre "Cashmilon" was partially hydrolyzed to convert a fraction of its nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups and then coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) resin and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to produce a novel gel-coated fibrous sorbent with multiple functionalities of cationic, anionic and chelating types, and significantly faster sorption kinetics than bead-form sorbents. The sorption properties of the fibrous sorbent were measured using Zn(II) in aqueous solution as the sorbate to determine the effects of pH and the presence of common ions in the solution on the sorption capacity. The rate of sorption on the gel-coated fibre was measured in comparison with that on Amberlite IRA-68 weak-base resin beads, to demonstrate the marked difference between fibre and bead-form sorbents in their kinetic behaviour.
