In the framework of a multidisciplinary research program, an organic geochemical study was carried out on a drill core which comprises a 245 m thick sequence of light-colored, Upper Albian marlstones that were deposited in the central part of the Lower Saxony basin (northern Germany). For part of the Upper Albian sequence, high-resolution measurements of carbonate contents reveal cycles which can be related to earth orbital forcing. Based on these data, sediment accumulation rates were calculated to be in the order of 15 g/m**2/yr. These high accumulation rates contrast with very low organic carbon contents and an extremely poor preservation of the autochthonous organic matter. Most of the sedimentary organic matter is of terrigenous origin and mainly derived from the erosion of older sedimentary rocks. Organic petrography reveals only a very small fraction of marine organic particles. Carbon/sulphur ratios, pristane/phytane ratios as well as the predominance of resedimented organic particles over autochthonous organic particles suggest that aerobic degradation processes rather than anaerobic processes (sulphate reduction) were responsible for the degradation of the organic matter. Furthermore, the scarcity of terrigenous organic particles (vitrinite) indicates that there was little vegetation on nearby land areas. To explain these analytical results, a depositional model was developed which could explain the scarcity of organic matter in the Upper Albian sediments. This model is based on downwelling of oxygen-rich, saline waters of Tethyan origin, which reduces the nutrient content of surface waters and thus primary bioproductivity while degradation of primary organic matter in the water column is enhanced at the same time. These conditions contrast to those which existed in Barremian and early Aptian times in this basin, when limited water exchange with adjacent oceans caused oxygen deficiency and the deposition of numerous organic carbon-rich black shales. The thick, organic matter-poor Upper Albian sequence of northern Germany also contrasts with comparatively thin, time-equivalent, deep-sea black shales from Italy. This discrepancy indicates that local and regional oceanographic factors (at least in this case) have a greater influence on organic matter deposition than global events.

Digitized records of optical desnity in many North Atlantic cores exihibt rapid changes from lighter to darker extrems, typically within less than 200 years, at the 5d/5e, 5b/5c and 4/5 boundaries. In cores from DSDP site 609 the changes from lighter to darker color coincide with increasing in relative abundance of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (l.c.), with increases in abundances of lithic grains and with decreasing in carbonate content. The rapid changes to dark color, therefore, are climate-driven and correspond to a lowering of seas surface temperatures and to increases in amounts of ice rafted debris relative to biogenic carbonate. At the 5d&4c boundary, delta18O in N. pachyderma (l.c.) increases abruptly with the change to darker sediments as expected for cooler sea surface temperatures. At the 4/5 boundary, however, delta18O decreases with the change to darker sediment and cooler sea surface temperatures, suggesting that a layer of fresh surface water was present in the North Atlantic at that time.

A most significant finding of the ODP Leg 107 drilling campaign was the recovery of at least 56 distinct sapropel intervals in upper Pliocene to Pleistocene sediments of six sites drilled in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Except for 3 repots of disturbed organic-rich sediments - recovered in Core 201 of the Swedish Deep-Sea Expedition, in Core 2R-1,107 cm of Site 373 (Leg 13 DSDP) and at Site 373, Core 1-2,O-5 cm of DSDP Leg 42A - sapropels had previously only been described from the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Scientific deep-sea drilling in the Tyrrhenian Sea during DSDP Legs 13 and 42A apparently missed most of these deposits due to spot coring and rotary drilling techniques; high sedimentation rates may have precluded recovery by conventional gravity coring devices. The recovery of multiple layers of sapropels and sapropelic sediments in the Tyrrhenian Sea demonstrates that oceanographic conditions conducive to sapropel formation were not confined to the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean, but occurred sporadically and possibly simultaneously in the entire Mediterranean during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. In the light of this finding, previous models of sapropel genesis may need reconsideration. In this paper, we present some initial data on the Tyrrhenian sapropels and suggest some implications of their massive occurrence in the western Mediterranean realm. We end by outlining possible causes for deposition of sapropels in an attempt to revive the interest in sapropels and their paleoceanographic significance.

A multiproxy analysis based on planktic foraminiferal abundances, derived SSTs, and stable planktic isotopes measurements together with alkenone abundances and Uk'37 SSTs was performed on late MIS 6 to early MIS 5d sediment recovered from Site 975 (ODP Leg 161) in the South Balearic Islands basin (Western Mediterranean) with emphasis on reconstructing the climate progression of the last interglacial period. A number of abrupt climate changes related to alternative influence of nutrient rich northern and oligotrophic southern water masses were revealed. Heinrich event 11 and cooling events C27, C26, C25, C24, C23, which have been previously described in the North Atlantic, were recognized. However, in comparison to the eastern North Atlantic mid-latitude region, events C27 and C26 at Site 975 seem to be significantly more pronounced. Together with evidence of a two-phase climate optimum with maximum SSTs reached during its later phase, this implies a close similarity in climate dynamics between the Western Mediterranean and the Nordic seas. We propose that postglacial effects in the Nordic seas had an influence on the western Mediterranean climate via atmospheric circulation and that these effects competed with the insolation force.

Geochemical characterizations of the Cretaceous formations at Site 603 are quite comparable with those at Site 105. In the Blake-Bahama and the Hatteras formations, the petroleum potential is medium (<5 kg HC/t of rock) to very low (<0.5 kg HC/t of rock), and the organic matter is mainly of type III origin, that is, terrestrial. At the top of the Hatteras Formation, there is a condensed series, which chiefly contains organic matter of type II origin, with up to 20 wt.% total organic carbon content in Core 603B-34 and 25 wt.% in Core 105-9. This accumulation corresponds to the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary event. An examination of dinoflagellates in the kerogen concentration assigns dates to the samples studied by organic geochemistry. The Cenomanian and Turonian age of the organic-matter-rich black claystones indicates a low rate of sedimentation, about 1 m/Ma. Furthermore, the occurrence of type II organic matter indicates an anoxic environment with insufficient oxygen renewal to oxidize the sinking hemipelagic organic matter. This organic enrichment is not related to local phenomena but to sedimentation over an extended area, because deposits are well known in various areas with different paleodepths in the North Atlantic.

We studied the siliceous microplankton assemblages (mainly diatoms) from plankton tows (mesh size 20 µm) and surface sediment samples collected along a N-S transect in the northern Red Sea (28-21°N). In addition, we analyzed differences/similarities between plankton and sediment assemblages within a brine-filled basin (the southern basin) of the Shaban Deep and compared these assemblages with those from outside the brine. Plankton samples revealed the overwhelming dominance of diatoms over other siliceous groups. Diatoms accounted for ca. 97% of all biosiliceous particles at 120-20 m (vs. 2.9% silicoflagellates and 0.4% radiolarians), and ca. 94% at 200-120 m (vs. 4.5% silicoflagellates and 1.6% radiolarians). In general, a marine, warm-water (tropical/subtropical) diatom assemblage characterizes the plankton samples. Representatives of the Nitzschia bicapitata group are by far the most abundant contributors at both depth intervals (average=43%), ranging from ca. 30% in the North to ca. 60% in the South. Biogenic opal content in non-brine surface sediments is very low, (below 0.2 wt.% SiO2); and concentration of siliceous microorganisms is also low and of the order of 5*10**3-10**4 microorganisms/g dry sediment. Diatoms are the main contributors to the opal signal in the 20-40 µm fraction, while they share dominance with radiolarians in the >40 µm fraction. Total diatom concentrations average 1.2*10**4 valves/g in the 20-40 µm fraction and 4*10**3 valves/g in the >40 µm fraction. Robust taxa of warm water affinity (Alveus marinus, Azpeitia neocrenulata, Azpeitia nodulifera and Roperia tesselata) characterize the surface sediments. In contrast, biogenic opal content in brine surface sediment samples is much higher than in the non-brine samples, ranging from 2.8 to 3.8 wt.% SiO2, and concentration of siliceous microorganisms is 3-4 orders of magnitude higher. In addition here, diatoms dominate the opal signal. The taxa found in these samples are a mixture of non-brine and plankton samples, and fragile forms (e.g., N. bicapitata group, Neodelphineis indica) are well preserved in these sediments. Thus, brine sediments in this region seem to offer a great potential for palaeoenvironmental studies.

Nearly continuous cores of Quaternary fine-grained sediments with distinct dark-light colored cycles were recovered from Sites 794, 795, and 797 in the basinal parts of the Japan Sea during Leg 127. A comparison of gray value (darkness) profiles supplemented by visual inspection of core photographs between sites indicated that most of the dark and light layers were correlatable between sites, and that two of the dark layers lie close to adjacent marker ash layers. These observations indicate that deposition of dark and light layers resulted from basin-wide synchronous events. In order to understand the origin of these dark-light cycles, petrographical, mineralogical, compositional, and paleontological studies were carried out on closely spaced samples from the upper Quaternary sediments recovered from Site 797. Age model was constructed based on comparison between variation in diatom abundance and the standard oxygen isotope curve of Imbrie et al. (1984), the latter was interpolated between the five age controlled levels established at Site 797. The two curves show similar patterns which enabled us to "tune" the sediment ages to the oxygen isotope stages. We have to use variation in diatom abundance as a substitute for oxygen isotope curve since oxygen isotopic data are not available at the studied sites. Bottom water oxygenation conditions were estimated based on two criteria: (1) the degree of lamina preservation and (2) the ratio of Corg to Stot. The surface water productivity was deduced from the Corg and biogenic silica content. Results suggest that the bottom water oxygenation level and the surface water productivity varied significantly in response to the glacial-interglacial cycles. Glacio-eustatic sea-level changes and subsequent changes in water circulation in the Japan Sea appear to have been responsible for these variations and consequent changes in sediment composition throughout the Quaternary.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 190 was programmed to investigate deformational, diagenetic, and hydrologic processes and their interactions in the Nankai Trough accretionary prism. Site 1178 is the northernmost site in the Muroto Transect. Slope sediments and the underlying landward-dipping reflector zone were successfully cored. Temperature measurements and Cl concentrations in pore water indirectly indicate the presence of gas hydrate between 120 and 400 meters below seafloor (mbsf) at Site 1178, with the highest concentrations between 150 and 200 mbsf (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.190.109.2001). Sedimentary structures show a broad range of deformation structures rich in fractures, suggesting active fluid circulation in the Nankai Trough prism. One of the objectives of Leg 190 was to clarify the interplay of various fundamental processes taking place in the Nankai Trough accretionary prism. Bacteria or prokaryotes in deep subsurface sediment play an important role for material transformation and circulation in an accretionary prism. Significant amounts of bacteria are detected in many of the samples examined (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.190.109.2001). The type of organic matter in sediments is an important factor related to bacterial activity. To assist investigations on material circulation in deep subsurface sediments, the samples from Site 1178 were analyzed for geolipids (extractable organic matter). The basic data set is preliminarily compiled in the present report to show the types of organic matter and their concentrations in sediments from Site 1178.

Core samples taken during Leg 121 drilling aboard the JOIDES Resolution in the central Indian Ocean were analyzed for their low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon contents. Forty-three samples from the Broken Ridge and 39 samples from the Ninetyeast Ridge drill sites, deep-frozen on board immediately after recovery, were studied by a dynamic headspace technique (hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization). Light hydrocarbons (saturated and olefinic) with two to four carbon atoms, and toluene as a selected aromatic compound, were identified. Total C2-C4 saturated hydrocarbon yields vary considerably from virtually zero in a Paleogene calcareous ooze from Hole 757B to nearly 600 nanogram/gram of dry-weight sediment (parts per billion) in a Cretaceous claystone from Hole 758A. An increase of light-hydrocarbon yields with depth, and hence with sediment temperature, was observed from Hole 758A samples down to a depth of about 500 meters below seafloor. Despite extreme data scatter due to lithological changes over this depth interval, this increased yield indicates the onset of temperature-controlled hydrocarbon formation reactions. Toluene contents are also extremely variable (generally between 10 and 100 ppb) and reach more than 300 ppb in two samples of tuffaceous lithology (Sections 121-755A-17R-4 and 121-758A-48R-4). As for the saturated hydrocarbons, there was also an increase of toluene yields with increasing depth in Hole 758A.

The Mediterranean Sea is at the transition between temperate and tropical air masses and as such of importance for studying climate change. The Gulf of Taranto and adjacent SW Adriatic Sea are at the heart of this region. Their sediments are excellently suited for generating high quality environmental records for the last millennia with a sub-decadal resolution. The quality of these records is dependent on a careful calibration of the transfer functions used to translate the sedimentary lipid signals to the local environment. Here, we examine and calibrate the UK'37 and TEX86 lipid-based temperature proxies in 48 surface sediments and relate these to ambient sea surface temperatures and other environmental data. The UK'37-based temperatures in surface sediments reflect winter/spring sea surface temperatures in agreement with other studies demonstrating maximum haptophyte production during the colder season. The TEX86-based temperatures for the nearshore sites also reflect winter sea surface temperatures. However, at the most offshore sites, they correspond to summer sea surface temperatures. Additional lipid and environmental data including the distribution of the BIT index and remote-sensed chlorophyll-a suggest a shoreward increase of the impact of seasonal and spatial variability in nutrients and control of planktonic archaeal abundance by primary productivity, particle loading in surface waters and/or overprint by a cold-biased terrestrial TEX86 signal. As such the offshore TEX86 values seem to reflect a true summer signal to the effect that offshore UK'37 and TEX86 reconstruct winter and summer temperature, respectively, and hence provide information on the annual temperature amplitude.

Palynological data from offshore Costa Rica, allow us to investigate the relationship between dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and changes in regional oceanic primary productivity. From Miocene to Pleistocene, productivity at ODP Site 1039 was influenced by tectonic drift, as Site 1039 approached the continent, from the Equator to its current position at ~10°N. In addition, dinoflagellate abundance is modulated by regional productivity events, which modified primary productivity, as also indicated by available data on calcareous nannofossils, diatoms, TOC, and CaCO3 content. Five palynomorph intervals are defined. The early-late Miocene one, dominated by Batiacasphaera, represents relatively stable, productive oceanic conditions before the closure of the Indonesian and Panama Seaways. The late Miocene decrease in palynomorph recovery is related to the Carbonate Crash Event. The high abundance and diversity of the assemblages at the end of the late Miocene to early Pliocene indicate increased productivity related to the Global Biogenic Bloom, and a change in dominance from Batiacasphaera to Impagidinium to Nematosphaeropsis. The low abundance of the late Pliocene interval is related to El Niño-like conditions, and there is another change related to the disappearance of Batiacasphaera and dominance of Impagidinium, Nematosphaeropsis, and Operculodinium. The abundant Pleistocene assemblages represent increased marine productivity, and a high influx of continental palynomorphs and bissacate pollen, associated with the proximity of the Costa Rica Dome. Pleistocene dinoflagellates are characterized by Spiniferites and Selenopemphix, together with rare Impagidinium and Nematosphaeropsis.

An organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst analysis was carried out on 53 surface sediment samples from West Africa (17-6°N) to obtain insight in the relationship between their spatial distribution and hydrological conditions in the upper water column as well as marine productivity in the study area. Multivariate analysis of the dinoflagellate cyst relative abundances and environmental parameters of the water column shows that sea-surface temperature, salinity, marine productivity and bottom water oxygen are the factors that relate significantly to the distribution patterns of individual species in the region. The composition of cyst assemblages and dinoflagellate cyst concentrations allows the identification of four hydrographic regimes; 1) the northern regime between 17 and 14°N characterized by high productivity associated with seasonal coastal upwelling, 2) the southern regime between 12 and 6°N associated with high-nutrient waters influenced by river discharge 3) the intermediate regime between 14 and 12°N influenced mainly by seasonal coastal upwelling additionally associated with fluvial input of terrestrial nutrients and 4) the offshore regime characterized by low chlorophyll-a concentrations in upper waters and high bottom water oxygen concentrations. Our data show that cysts of Polykrikos kofoidii, Selenopemphix quanta, Dubridinium spp., Echinidinium species, cysts of Protoperidinium monospinum and Spiniferites pachydermus are the best proxies to reconstruct the boundary between the NE trade winds and the monsoon winds in the subtropical eastern Atlantic Ocean. The association of Bitectatodinium spongium, Lejeunecysta oliva, Quinquecuspis concreta, Selenopemphix nephroides, Trinovantedinium applanatum can be used to reconstruct past river outflow variations within this region.

This data set contains four time series of particulate and dissolved soil nitrogen measurements from the main experiment plots of a large grassland biodiversity experiment (the Jena Experiment; see further details below). In the main experiment, 82 grassland plots of 20 x 20 m were established from a pool of 60 species belonging to four functional groups (grasses, legumes, tall and small herbs). In May 2002, varying numbers of plant species from this species pool were sown into the plots to create a gradient of plant species richness (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 60 species) and functional richness (1, 2, 3, 4 functional groups). Plots were maintained by bi-annual weeding and mowing. 1. Total nitrogen from solid phase: Stratified soil sampling was performed every two years since before sowing in April 2002 and was repeated in April 2004, 2006 and 2008 to a depth of 30 cm segmented to a depth resolution of 5 cm giving six depth subsamples per core. In 2002 five samples per plot were taken and analyzed independently. Averaged values per depth layer are reported. In later years, three samples per plot were taken, pooled in the field, and measured as a combined sample. Sampling locations were less than 30 cm apart from sampling locations in other years. All soil samples were passed through a sieve with a mesh size of 2 mm in 2002. In later years samples were further sieved to 1 mm. No additional mineral particles were removed by this procedure. Total nitrogen concentration was analyzed on ball-milled subsamples (time 4 min, frequency 30 s-1) by an elemental analyzer at 1150°C (Elementaranalysator vario Max CN; Elementar Analysensysteme GmbH, Hanau, Germany). 2. Total nitrogen from solid phase (high intensity sampling): In block 2 of the Jena Experiment, soil samples were taken to a depth of 1m (segmented to a depth resolution of 5 cm giving 20 depth subsamples per core) with three replicates per block ever 5 years starting before sowing in April 2002. Samples were processed as for the more frequent sampling but were always analyzed independently and never pooled. 3. Mineral nitrogen from KCl extractions: Five soil cores (diameter 0.01 m) were taken at a depth of 0 to 0.15 m (and between 2002 and 2004 also at a depth of 0.15 to 0.3 m) of the mineral soil from each of the experimental plots at various times over the years. In addition also plots of the management experiment, that altered mowing frequency and fertilized subplots (see further details below) were sampled in some later years. Samples of the soil cores per plot (subplots in case of the management experiment) were pooled during each sampling campaign. NO3-N and NH4-N concentrations were determined by extraction of soil samples with 1 M KCl solution and were measured in the soil extract with a Continuous Flow Analyzer (CFA, 2003-2005: Skalar, Breda, Netherlands; 2006-2007: AutoAnalyzer, Seal, Burgess Hill, United Kingdom). 4. Dissolved nitrogen in soil solution: Glass suction plates with a diameter of 12 cm, 1 cm thickness and a pore size of 1-1.6 µm (UMS GmbH, Munich, Germany) were installed in April 2002 in depths of 10, 20, 30 and 60 cm to collect soil solution. The sampling bottles were continuously evacuated to a negative pressure between 50 and 350 mbar, such that the suction pressure was about 50 mbar above the actual soil water tension. Thus, only the soil leachate was collected. Cumulative soil solution was sampled biweekly and analyzed for nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+) and total dissolved nitrogen concentrations with a continuous flow analyzer (CFA, Skalar, Breda, The Netherlands). Nitrate was analyzed photometrically after reduction to NO2- and reaction with sulfanilamide and naphthylethylenediamine-dihydrochloride to an azo-dye. Our NO3- concentrations contained an unknown contribution of NO2- that is expected to be small. Simultaneously to the NO3- analysis, NH4+ was determined photometrically as 5-aminosalicylate after a modified Berthelot reaction. The detection limits of NO3- and NH4+ were 0.02 and 0.03 mg N L-1, respectively. Total dissolved N in soil solution was analyzed by oxidation with K2S2O8 followed by reduction to NO2- as described above for NO3-. Dissolved organic N (DON) concentrations in soil solution were calculated as the difference between TDN and the sum of mineral N (NO3- + NH4+).
