In the present work we show the expressions of the gravitational potential of homogeneous bodies with non-spherical three-dimensional shapes in order to study the trajectories around these bodies. The potentials of a prolate and an oblate ellipsoids with different values of semi-major axis are presented. Their results are validated with a test using a spherical body in order to guarantee the approximation of any body as a polyhedral model of the body. With these expressions we study trajectories of a point of mass around the three-dimensional bodies and the results indicated that there is a group of orbits around those bodies and the polyhedral form of the object does work very well. Autism spectrum disorders are severe psychiatric diseases commonly identified in the population. They are diagnosed during childhood and the etiology has been much debated due to their variations and complexity. Onset is early and characterized as communication and social interaction disorders and as repetitive and stereotyped behavior. Austistic disorders may occur together with various genetic and chromosomal diseases. Several chromosomal regions and genes are implicated in the predisposition for these diseases, in particular those with products expressed in the central nervous system. There are reports of autistic and mentally handicapped patients with submicroscopic subtelomeric alterations at the distal end of the long arm of chromosome 2. Additionally, there is evidence that alterations at 2q37 cause brain malformations that result in the autistic phenotype. These alterations are very small and not identified by routine cytogenetics to which patients are normally submitted, which may result in an underestimation of the diagnosis. This study aimed at evaluating the 2q37 region in patients with autistic disorders. Twenty patients were studied utilizing the fluorescence in situ hybridization technique with a specific probe for 2q37. All of them were also studied by the GTC banding technique to identify possible chromosomal diseases. No alterations were observed in the 2q37 region of the individuals studied, and no patient presented chromosomal diseases. This result may be due to the small sample size analyzed. The introduction of routine analysis of the 2q37 region for patients with autistic disorders depends on further studies. ©FUNPEC-RP.

An analytical model developed to describe the crystallization kinetics of spherical glass particles has been derived in this work. A continuous phase transition from three-dimensional (3D)-like to 1D-like crystal growth has been considered and a procedure for the quantitative evaluation of the critical time for this 3D-1D transition is proposed. This model also allows straightforward determination of the density of surface nucleation sites on glass powders using differential scanning calorimetry data obtained under different thermal conditions. © 2009 The American Ceramic Society.

Petroleum and derivatives have been considered one of the main environmental contaminants. Among petroleum derivatives, the volatile organic compounds benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) represent a major concern due to their toxicity and easy accumulation in groundwater. Biodegradation methods seem to be suitable tools for the clean-up of BTEX contaminants from groundwater. Genotoxic and mutagenic potential of BTEX prior and after biodegradation process was evaluated through analyses of chromosomal aberrations and MN test in meristematic and F 1 root cells using the Allium cepa test system. Seeds of A. cepa were germinated into five concentrations of BTEX, non-biodegraded and biodegraded, in ultra-pure water (negative control), in MMS 4×10 -4M (positive control) and in culture medium used in the biodegradation (blank biodegradation control). Results showed a significant frequency of both chromosomal and nuclear aberrations. The micronucleus (MN) frequency in meristematic cells was significant for most of tested samples. However, MN was not present in significant levels in the F 1 cells, suggesting that there was no permanent damage for the meristematic cell. The BTEX effects were significantly reduced in the biodegraded samples when compared to the respective non-biodegraded concentrations. Therefore, in this study, the biodegradation process showed to be a reliable and effective alternative to treat BTEX-contaminated waters. Based on our results and available data, the BTEX toxicity could also be related to a synergistic effect of its compounds. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents a control method that is effective to reduce the degenerative effects of delay time caused by a treacherous network. In present application a controlled DC motor is part of an inverted pendulum and provides the equilibrium of this system. The control of DC motor is accomplished at the distance through a treacherous network, which causes delay time in the control signal. A predictive technique is used so that it turns the system free of delay. A robust digital sliding mode controller is proposed to control the free-delay system. Due to the random conditions of the network operation, a delay time detection and accommodation strategy is also proposed. A computer simulation is shown to illustrate the design procedures and the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2011 IEEE.

We obtain an explicit cellular decomposition of the quaternionic spherical space forms, manifolds of positive constant curvature that are factors of an odd sphere by a free orthogonal action of a generalized quaternionic group. The cellular structure gives and explicit description of the associated cellular chain complex of modules over the integral group ring of the fundamental group. As an application we compute the Whitehead torsion of these spaces for any representation of the fundamental group. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The addition of nutrients and/or soil bulking agents is used in bioremediation to increase microbial activity in contaminated soils. For this purpose, some studies have assessed the effectiveness of vinasse in the bioremediation of soils contaminated with petroleum waste. The present study was aimed at investigating the clastogenic/aneugenic potential of landfarming soil from a petroleum refinery before and after addition of sugar cane vinasse using the Allium cepa bioassay. Our results show that the addition of sugar cane vinasse to landfarming soil potentiates the clastogenic effects of the latter probably due the release of metals that were previously adsorbed into the organic matter. These metals may have interacted synergistically with petroleum hydrocarbons present in the landfarming soil treated with sugar cane vinasse. We recommend further tests to monitor the effects of sugar cane vinasse on soils contaminated with organic wastes. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Agroindustrial by-products and residues from treatment of sewage sludge have been recently recycled as soil amendments. This study was aimed at assessing toxic potential of biosolid, obtained from a sewage treatment plant (STP), vinasse, a by-product of the sugar cane industry, and a combination of both residues using Allium cepa assay. Bioprocessing of these samples by a terrestrial invertebrate (diplopod Rhinocricus padbergi) was also examined. Bioassay assembly followed standards of the Brazilian legislation for disposal of these residues. After adding residues, 20 diplopods were placed in each terrarium, where they remained for 30 days. Chemical analysis and the A. cepa assay were conducted before and after bioprocessing by diplopods. At the end of the bioassay, there was a decrease in arsenic and mercury. For the remaining metals, accumulation and/or bioavailability varied in all samples but suggested bioprocessing by animals. The A. cepa test revealed genotoxic effects characterized by different chromosome aberrations. Micronuclei and chromosome breaks on meristematic cells and F1 cells with micronuclei were examined to assess mutagenicity of samples. After 30 days, the genotoxic effects were significantly reduced in the soil + biosolid and soil + biosolid + vinasse groups as well as the mutagenic effects in the soil + biosolid + vinasse group. Similar to vermicomposting, bioprocessing of residues by diplopods can be a feasible alternative and used prior to application in crops to improve degraded soils and/or city dumps. Based on our findings, further studies are needed to adequately dispose of these residues in the environment. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Contaminant driven genetic erosion reported through the inspection of selectable traits can be underestimated using neutral markers. This divergence was previously reported in the aquatic system of an abandoned pyrite mine. The most sensitive genotypes of the microcrustacean cladoceran Daphnia longispina were found to be lacking in the impacted reservoir near the entrance of the metal rich acid mine drainage (AMD). Since that divergence could be, at least partially, accounted for by mutagenicity and genotoxicity of the AMD, the present study aimed at providing such a characterization. The Allium cepa chromosomal aberration assay, using root meristematic cells, was carried out, by exposing seeds to 100, 10, 1, and 0.1 % of the local AMD. Chromosomal aberrations, cell division phases and cell death were quantified after the AMD exposure and after 24 and 48 h recovery periods. The AMD revealed to be mutagenic and genotoxic, even after diluting it to 1 and 0.1 %. Dilutions within this range were previously found to be below the lethality threshold and to elicit sublethal effects on reproduction of locally collected D. longispina clonal lineages Significant mutagenic effects (micronuclei and chromosomal breaks) were also found at 0.1 % AMD, supporting that exposure may induce permanent genetic alterations. Recovery tests showed that AMD genotoxic effects persisted after the exposure. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

This work proposes a method for dioptric power mapping of progressive lenses through dual wavelength, low-coherence digital speckle pattern interferometry. Lens characterization finds several applications and is extremely useful in the fields of ophthalmology and astronomy, among others. The optical setup employs two red diode lasers which are conveniently aligned and tuned in order to generate a synthetic wavelength. The resulting speckle image formed onto a diffusive glass plate positioned behind the test lens appears covered of contour interference fringes describing the deformation on the light wavefront due to the analyzed lens. By employing phase stepping and phase unwrapping methods the wavefront phase was retrieved and then expressed in terms of a Zernike series. From this series, expressions for the dioptric power and astigmatic power were derived as a function of the x- and y-coordinates of the lens aperture. One spherical and two progressive lenses were measured. The experimental results presented a good agreement with those obtained through a commercial lensometer, showing the potentialities of the method. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

A simulação de uma seção sísmica de afastamento-nulo (ZO) a partir de dados de cobertura múltipla para um meio 2-D, através do empilhamento, é um método de imageamento de reflexão sísmica muito utilizado, que permite reduzir a quantidade de dados e melhorar a relação sinal/ruído. Segundo Berkovitch et al. (1999) o método Multifoco está baseado na Teoria do Imageamento Homeomórfico e consiste em empilhar dados de cobertura múltipla com distribuição fonte-receptor arbitrária de acordo com uma nova correção de sobretempo, chamada Multifoco. Esta correção de sobretempo esta baseada numa aproximação esférica local da frente de onda focalizante na vizinhança da superfície da terra. Este método permite construir uma seção sísmica no domínio do tempo de afastamento nulo aumentando a relação sinal/ruído. A técnica Multifoco não necessita do conhecimento a priori de um macro-modelo de velocidades. Três parâmetros são usados para descrever a aproximação de tempo de trânsito, Multifoco, os quais são: 1) o ângulo de emergência do raio de afastamento nulo ou raio de reflexão normal (β0), 2) a curvatura da frente de onda no Ponto de Incidência Normal (RNIP) e 3) curvatura da frente de Onda Normal (RN). Sendo também necessário a velocidade próximo a superfície da terra. Neste trabalho de tese aplico esta técnica de empilhamento Multifoco para dados de cobertura múltipla referidos a modelos de velocidade constante e modelo heterogêneos, com o objetivo de simular seções sísmicas afastamento-nulo. Neste caso, como se trata da solução de um problema direto, o macro-modelo de velocidades é considerado conhecido a priori. No contexto do problema inverso tem-se que os parâmetros RNIP, RN e β0 podem ser determinados a partir da análise de coerência aplicada aos dados sísmicos de múltipla cobertura. Na solução deste problema a função objetivo, a ser otimizada, é definida pelo cálculo da máxima coerência existente entre os dados na superfície de empilhamento sísmico. Neste trabalho de tese nos discutimos a sensibilidade da aproximação do tempo de trânsito usado no empilhamento Multifoco, como uma função dos parâmetros RNIP, RN e β0. Esta análise de sensibilidade é feita de três diferentes modos: 1) a primeira derivada da função objetivo, 2) a medida de coerência, denominada semelhança, e 3) a sensibilidade no Empilhamento Multifoco.
