Este texto contribuirá a que la institución de salud se organice y prepare la información necesaria para emprender el largo y tortuoso camino de la determinación de la razón costo/beneficio y de la acreditación. Además, podrá ser muy útil para los estudiantes de los programas de pregrado y posgrado de ingeniería biomédica que se quieran especializar en la gestión de tecnologías del equipamiento biomédico y la ingeniería clínica. También podrá ser usado como guía de referencia por personas que estén directamente vinculadas al sector de la salud en departamentos de mantenimiento, ingeniería clínica o de servicios hospitalarios.

Colombia es un país que ha logrado atraer la atención de diferentes países a nivel mundial debido al comportamiento económico que ha presentado en los últimos años. Gracias a estos resultados, es reconocida como mercado emergente debido a su rápido crecimiento interno en temas comerciales e industriales, y a sus notables y crecientes relaciones con otros países, entre otras características. En América Latina nos encontramos con varios países con características e iniciativas comerciales similares a las nuestras; países como Perú, Chile y México cuentan con infraestructuras de mercado de tamaño significativo y gran potencial, además de la cercanía geográfica (a excepción de México) y una gran similitud entre sus culturas, en 2011 surgió una iniciativa de integración regional para desarrollar progresivamente una libre circulación económica, de bienes, servicios, y personas. Con miras a convertirse en una plataforma política, económica y comercial a nivel mundial, enfocándose en la región Asia-Pacífico. Esta iniciativa se conoce como Alianza del Pacífico (AP) Uno de los subsectores más sensibles para los países miembros de la AP es el subsector agrícola. Debido a la baja diferenciación de productos y a la amenaza progresiva de un ingreso masivo de productos extranjeros a menor precio, pudiendo esto conseguir desestabilizar el mercado y afectando la producción interna o de los demás socios comerciales.

El objetivo de esta tesis es mejorar la efectividad y eficiencia de los entornos de aprendizaje virtual. Para lograr este propósito se define un Modelo de Usuario que considera las características del usuario, el contexto y la Interacción. Estas tres dimensiones son integradas en un Modelo de Usuario Integral (MUI) para proveer adaptación de contenido, formato y actividades en entornos educativos con heterogeneidad de usuarios, tecnologías e interacciones. Esta heterogeneidad genera la entrega de contenidos, formatos y actividades inadecuadas para los estudiantes. La particularización del MUI en un entorno educativo es definida Modelo de Estudiante Integral (MEI). Las principales aportaciones de esta tesis son la definición y validación de un MUI, la utilización de un MEI abierto para propiciar la reflexión de los estudiantes sobre sus procesos de aprendizaje, la integración tecnológica con independencia de plataforma y la validación del MEI con estudiantes en escenarios reales.

[Es]El objetivo principal de este trabajo es la introducción del usuario al mundo de la robótica, explicando para ello, desde un punto de vista práctico, los conceptos teóricos relacionados con la cinemática de mecanismos espaciales, específicamente la de los robots serie. Para lograr este objetivo se ha creado una metodología de aprendizaje, basada en tres ejercicios, que explica los comandos principales de RobotStudio; software de programación necesario para el control virtual de robots de la marca ABB, robot disponible en la escuela. Junto con esto, se desarrollan los conceptos necesarios para la realización de tareas básicas dentro del ámbito de la robótica. Mediante la implantación de esta metodología se pretende dotar al usuario de los conceptos esenciales para programar robots serie dentro de un ámbito virtual, otorgándole la posibilidad de conectarlo posteriormente a un robot real, obteniendo resultados prácticos y visibles.

Virtual globe technology holds many exciting possibilities for environmental science. These easy-to-use, intuitive systems provide means for simultaneously visualizing four-dimensional environmental data from many different sources, enabling the generation of new hypotheses and driving greater understanding of the Earth system. Through the use of simple markup languages, scientists can publish and consume data in interoperable formats without the need for technical assistance. In this paper we give, with examples from our own work, a number of scientific uses for virtual globes, demonstrating their particular advantages. We explain how we have used Web Services to connect virtual globes with diverse data sources and enable more sophisticated usage such as data analysis and collaborative visualization. We also discuss the current limitations of the technology, with particular regard to the visualization of subsurface data and vertical sections.

The rate and scale of human-driven changes can exert profound impacts on ecosystems, the species that make them up and the services they provide that sustain humanity. Given the speed at which these changes are occurring, one of society's major challenges is to coexist within ecosystems and to manage ecosystem services in a sustainable way. The effect of possible scenarios of global change on ecosystem services can be explored using ecosystem models. Such models should adequately represent ecosystem processes above and below the soil surface (aboveground and belowground) and the interactions between them. We explore possibilities to include such interactions into ecosystem models at scales that range from global to local. At the regional to global scale we suggest to expand the plant functional type concept (aggregating plants into groups according to their physiological attributes) to include functional types of aboveground-belowground interactions. At the scale of discrete plant communities, process-based and organism-oriented models could be combined into "hybrid approaches" that include organism-oriented mechanistic representation of a limited number of trophic interactions in an otherwise process - oriented approach. Under global change the density and activity of organisms determining the processes may change non-linearly and therefore explicit knowledge of the organisms and their responses should ideally be included. At the individual plant scale a common organism-based conceptual model of aboveground-belowground interactions has emerged. This conceptual model facilitates the formulation of research questions to guide experiments aiming to identify patterns that are common within, but differ between, ecosystem types and biomes. Such experiments inform modelling approaches at larger scales. Future ecosystem models should better include this evolving knowledge of common patterns of aboveground-belowground interactions. Improved ecosystem models are necessary toots to reduce the uncertainty in the information that assists us in the sustainable management of our environment in a changing world. As we move through the world, our eyes acquire a sequence of images. The information from this sequence is sufficient to determine the structure of a three-dimensional scene, up to a scale factor determined by the distance that the eyes have moved [1, 2]. Previous evidence shows that the human visual system accounts for the distance the observer has walked [3,4] and the separation of the eyes [5-8] when judging the scale, shape, and distance of objects. However, in an immersive virtual-reality environment, observers failed to notice when a scene expanded or contracted, despite having consistent information about scale from both distance walked and binocular vision. This failure led to large errors in judging the size of objects. The pattern of errors cannot be explained by assuming a visual reconstruction of the scene with an incorrect estimate of interocular separation or distance walked. Instead, it is consistent with a Bayesian model of cue integration in which the efficacy of motion and disparity cues is greater at near viewing distances. Our results imply that observers are more willing to adjust their estimate of interocular separation or distance walked than to accept that the scene has changed in size.

In a distributed environment remote entities, usually the producers or consumers of services, need a means to publish their existence so that clients, needing their services, can search and find the appropriate ones that they can then interact with directly. The publication of information is via a registry service, and the interaction is via a high-level messaging service. Typically, separate libraries provide these two services. Tycho is an implementation of a wide-area asynchronous messaging framework with an integrated distributed registry. This will free developers from the need to assemble their applications from a range of potentially diverse middleware offerings, which should simplify and speed application development and more importantly allow developers to concentrate on their own domain of expertise. In the first part of the paper we outline our motivation for producing Tycho and then review a number of registry and messaging systems popular with the Grid community. In the second part of the paper we describe the architecture and implementation of Tycho. In the third part of the paper we present and discuss various performance tests that were undertaken to compare Tycho with alternative similar systems. Finally, we summarise and conclude the paper and outline future work.

The International Conference (series) on Disability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies (ICDVRAT) this year held its sixth biennial conference, celebrating ten years of research and development in this field. A total of 220 papers have been presented at the first six conferences, addressing potential, development, exploration and examination of how these technologies can be applied in disabilities research and practice. The research community is broad and multi-disciplined, comprising a variety of scientific and medical researchers, rehabilitation therapists, educators and practitioners. Likewise, technologies, their applications and target user populations are also broad, ranging from sensors positioned on real world objects to fully immersive interactive simulated environments. A common factor is the desire to identify what the technologies have to offer and how they can provide added value to existing methods of assessment, rehabilitation and support for individuals with disabilities. This paper presents a brief review of the first decade of research and development in the ICDVRAT community, defining technologies, applications and target user populations served.

It is reported in the literature that distances from the observer are underestimated more in virtual environments (VEs) than in physical world conditions. On the other hand estimation of size in VEs is quite accurate and follows a size-constancy law when rich cues are present. This study investigates how estimation of distance in a CAVETM environment is affected by poor and rich cue conditions, subject experience, and environmental learning when the position of the objects is estimated using an experimental paradigm that exploits size constancy. A group of 18 healthy participants was asked to move a virtual sphere controlled using the wand joystick to the position where they thought a previously-displayed virtual cube (stimulus) had appeared. Real-size physical models of the virtual objects were also presented to the participants as a reference of real physical distance during the trials. An accurate estimation of distance implied that the participants assessed the relative size of sphere and cube correctly. The cube appeared at depths between 0.6 m and 3 m, measured along the depth direction of the CAVE. The task was carried out in two environments: a poor cue one with limited background cues, and a rich cue one with textured background surfaces. It was found that distances were underestimated in both poor and rich cue conditions, with greater underestimation in the poor cue environment. The analysis also indicated that factors such as subject experience and environmental learning were not influential. However, least square fitting of Stevens’ power law indicated a high degree of accuracy during the estimation of object locations. This accuracy was higher than in other studies which were not based on a size-estimation paradigm. Thus as indirect result, this study appears to show that accuracy when estimating egocentric distances may be increased using an experimental method that provides information on the relative size of the objects used.

By 2030, the world’s human population could rise to 8 billion people and world food demand may increase by 50%. Although food production outpaced population growth in the 20th century, it is clear that the environmental costs of these increases cannot be sustained into the future. This challenges us to re-think the way we produce food. We argue that viewing food production systems within an ecosystems context provides the basis for 21st century food production. An ecosystems view recognises that food production systems depend on ecosystem services but also have ecosystem impacts. These dependencies and impacts are often poorly understood by many people and frequently overlooked. We provide an overview of the key ecosystem services involved in different food production systems, including crop and livestock production, aquaculture and the harvesting of wild nature. We highlight the important ecosystem impacts of food production systems, including habitat loss and degradation, changes to water and nutrient cycles across a range of scales, and biodiversity loss. These impacts often undermine the very ecosystem services on which food production systems depend, as well as other ecosystem services unrelated to food. We argue that addressing these impacts requires us to re-design food production systems to recognise and manage the limitations on production imposed by the ecosystems within which they are embedded, and increasingly embrace a more multifunctional view of food production systems and associated ecosystems. In this way, we should be able to produce food more sustainably whilst inflicting less damage on other important ecosystem services.
