This study aimed to standardize signs and diagnostic criteria of respiratory function in newborn puppies delivered normally or after dystocia and caesarean operation. A total of 48 neonates were allocated into groups: eutocia (n = 20), dystocia (n = 8), caesarean (c)-section (n = 20). Neonatal health was assessed using the Apgar score and body temperature was determined at 0, 5 and 60 min after delivery. Venous blood gases (pO(2) and SO(2)) was measured immediately and 60 min after delivery, and a thoracic radiograph was made between 0 and 5 min of life. The c-section group had significantly lower Apgar scores at birth and 5 min. Hypothermia was present at 5 min in the eutocia and c-section groups, and at 60 min in all groups. The eutocia group had an irregular respiratory pattern in 78% of puppies at birth, 27.7% at 5 min and 21% at 60 min compared with 87.5%, 62.5% and 12.5% of the pups in the dystocia group where there was irregular respiratory rhythm, moderate to intense respiratory sounds with agonic episodes. The c-section group had respiratory alterations in 70%, 45% and 16% of puppies at 0, 5 and 60 min, respectively. Radiographic abnormalities were present in 17% of the pups in the eutocia group, 25% of the pups in the dystocia group and 30% of the pups in the c-section group, respectively. The c-section group had significantly lower SO(2) values at 60 min than at birth. All puppies had hypoxaemia, but a significant decrease was observed in the c-section group. Newborn puppies had tissue hypoxia and irregular respiratory pattern at birth. Caesarean-section puppies had lower vitality; however, all developed satisfactory Apgar scores at 5 min of life, regardless of the obstetric condition.

Our long-term objective is to devise reliable methods to generate biological replacement teeth exhibiting the physical properties and functions of naturally formed human teeth. Previously, we demonstrated the successful use of tissue engineering approaches to generate small, bioengineered tooth crowns from harvested pig and rat postnatal dental stem cells (DSCs). To facilitate characterizations of human DSCs, we have developed a novel radiographic staging system to accurately correlate human third molar tooth developmental stage with anticipated harvested DSC yield. Our results demonstrated that DSC yields were higher in less developed teeth (Stages 1 and 2), and lower in more developed teeth (Stages 3, 4, and 5). The greatest cell yields and colony-forming units (CFUs) capability was obtained from Stages 1 and 2 tooth dental pulp. We conclude that radiographic developmental staging can be used to accurately assess the utility of harvested human teeth for future dental tissue engineering applications.

Lymphangiomas are benign nonencapsulated lesions composed of sequestered noncommunicating lymphoid tissue lined by lymphatic endothelium and are thought to be caused by congenital obstruction of lymphatic drainage. They are subclassified by vessel size, such as the capillary, which is rare and located in subcutaneous tissue, cavernous (located about the mouth and tongue), and cystic (cystic hygromas). The cystic hygromas show a predilection for the neck (75%) and maxilla (20%), and the remaining 5% arise in rare locations such as the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, bone, kidney, colon, liver, spleen and scrotum. Only 3%-10% of neck lesions extend into the mediastinum. In this paper, we report a rare case of cystic hygroma with a huge dimension discussing the use of computed tomography scanning for diagnosis.

Aim To report clinical complications (pain, necrotic gingival tissue and bone sequestration) resulting from accidental injection of sodium hypochlorite. Summary Root canal treatment is a routine clinical procedure with few reported complications. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is commonly used as an irrigant during the procedure because of its tissue-dissolving, antibacterial and lubricating properties. This paper presents a case in which accidental injection of sodium hypochlorite into the lingual gingiva of a female patient caused gingival and bone necrosis. Surgical intervention was required. Key learning points Sodium hypochlorite is dangerous if injected into the tissues. The presentation of sodium hypochlorite in glass, anaesthetic type cartridges is potentially dangerous, and should be condemned. All healthcare workers should check carefully the contents of any syringe before injecting into patients.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) comprises a group of disorders, the common feature of which is Langerhans cell proliferation. The clinical presentation is highly varied. The severity and prognosis of the disease are dependent on the type and extent of organ involvement. This paper reports a rare case of a four-month-old white male with unifocal LCH limited exclusively to the mandible, discussing the diagnosis, radiographic and immunohistochemical aspects, treatment and monitoring multidisciplinary of the case. Tonsillar polyps are nonneoplastic lesions usually composed of variable amounts of lymphoid and vascular and connective tissues. All of them are generally assumed to be hamartomatous proliferations, but the profile of vascular and connective components has yet to be explored. The vascular system of the tonsils is complex and includes highly specialized structures (i.e., high endothelial venules (HEVs)) involved in lymphocyte homing into lymphoid tissues. In 14 tonsillar polyps and 26 control tonsils, an immunohistochemical study was performed using CD34 (blood vessels and HEVs), MECA-79 (HEVs), D2-40 (lymphatic vessels), Ki-67, collagens I and III, fibronectin, and tenascin-C. The polyps showed increased total lymphatic area, whereas the number of blood vessels and lymphatics and the blood vascular area did not differ significantly from those of control tonsils. Rare Ki-67+ endothelial cells were found. In the polyps, we detected, possibly for the first time, HEVs amid lymphoid tissue, and that the amount of the latter correlated positively with HEV density. The polyps also presented lesser amounts of fibronectin and collagens I and III than in normal tonsils, which were distributed in a disorganized fashion. Tenascin-C expression was uncommon in the polyps and control tonsils. Tonsillar polyps are composed of disorganized connective tissue and lymphatic channels which can be considered hamartomatous proliferations. However, the lymphoid component is possibly reactive due to its relationship with the HEVs. The highly differentiated phenotype of the HEVs and their complex biology are not in agreement with what would be expected for a component of hamartomatous nature.

Oral cancer is the eighth most prevalent cancer worldwide. It causes significant mortality and morbidity rates, which have motivated the search for prognostic factors to better tailor the individual management of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. Nucleophosmin is a multifunctional protein that is involved in many cellular activities, such as, regulation of the tumor suppressor genes TP53 and p14(ARF). and is associated with proliferative and growth suppressive roles in the cell. Nucleophosmin is overexpressed in many solid tumors in human, including tumors of the colon, liver, stomach, ovary, and prostate. In this study, we analyzed the expression of nucleophosmin, Ki-67, and p53 by immunohistochemistry in oral squamous cell carcinomas. Less than 10% of nuclear staining was observed in 90.3%, 50.6%, and 65.3% of the cases for nucleophosmin, p53, and Ki-67, respectively. Expression of p53 was not significantly associated with any of the clinicopathologic parameters analyzed. Increased expression of Ki-67 was associated with the presence of lymph node metastasis (P < .0001), advanced stages of disease (P = .0030), tumors occurring in the floor of mouth (P = .0018), and moderately/well-differentiated tumors (P = .0287). Local recurrence was associated with higher expression of nucleophosmin (P = .0233), and disease-free survival rate was significantly better in patients with low expression of nucleophosmin. Multivariate analysis suggested that expression of nucleophosmin could be an independent prognostic factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Aims Claudins are integral transmembrane proteins of the tight junctions, critical for maintaining cell adhesion and polarity. Alterations in the expression of individual claudins have been detected in carcinomas and appear to correlate with tumour progression. Methods In this study, a panel of anti-claudin antibodies (anti-claudins 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7) was employed to map claudin expression in 136 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) organised in a tissue microarray. Results Claudins were expressed in a reticular pattern up to the prickle layer in normal mucosal epithelium. In OSCC, claudins were strongly present in well-differentiated tumours, they presented mild and low expression in moderately differentiated OSCC, and were negative in poorly differentiated OSCC; the absences of claudin 1 (p = 0.002) and claudin 4 (p<0.001) were associated with moderately/poorly differentiated tumours. Strong expression of claudin 4 was associated with decreased perineural infiltration (p = 0.024). Claudins 5 and 7 were mostly negative or weakly expressed in all cases studied. Expression of claudin 7 was associated with the early clinical stages of the disease, whereas loss of claudin 7 tended to be more frequent in advanced stages of OSCC (p = 0.054). Absence of claudin 7 was also associated with absent vascular infiltration (p = 0.045) and with presence of recurrence (p = 0.052). Conclusions Claudin expression patterns showed a strong correlation with histological type of OSCC; claudin expression was decreased in areas of invasion, and negative in poorly differentiated tumours. This pattern may be related to evolution and prognosis of these tumours, especially in the case of claudin 7, which seems to be associated with a poor prognosis in OSCC.
