This study tested the preference of pintado catfish females (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans) for associating with well-fed or food-deprived males in simultaneous choice tests. Females were tested under three different treatments in which: (1) females could choose on the basis of multiple cues from the well-fed or food-deprived males (visual plus chemical); (2) only chemical cues were presented; (3) only visual cues were presented. Females chose well-fed males when chemical cues were presented (either visual + chemical or only chemical cues). When only visual cues were presented, females spent an equal amount of time in the choice apparatus compartments. Chemical signals, either directly through control of pheromone production, or indirectly by excreted metabolites, are likely to be an important source of information about nutritional condition in mating choice.

Leaf-cutting ants belonging to the tribe Attini are major herbivores and important agriculture pests in the neotropics, these ants being thought to feed on the sap which exudes from the plant material which they cut and also on the mycelium of a symbiotic fungus that grows on plant material inside their nests in what is called 'the fungus garden'. However, we have found that the survival of Atta sexdens worker ants on leaves, on mycelium. of the ants' symbiotic fungus, Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, or on plant polysaccharides was the same as that of starved A. sexdens, while, conversely, significantly longer survival was achieved by ants fed on the fungus garden material or on some of the products (especially glucose) of the hydrolysis of plant polysaccharides. We found that the fungus garden contained glucose at a higher concentration than that found in leaves or fungal mycelium, and that this glucose was consumed by the ant to the extent that it was probably responsible for up to 50% of the nutritional needs of the workers. The fungus garden contained polysaccharide degrading enzymes (pectinase, amylase, xylanase and cellulase) in proportions similar to that observed in laboratory cultures of L. gongylophorus. It thus appears that A. sexdens workers obtain a significant part of their nutrients from plant polysaccharide hydrolysis products produced by the action of extracellular enzymes released by L. gongylophorus. In this paper we discuss the symbiotic nutrition strategy of A. sexdens workers and brood and the role played by plant polysaccharides in the nutrition of attine ants. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. This work studied the influence of nitrogen source and sucrose concentration in the feeding medium for biomass and inulinase production by Kluyveromyces marxianus var. bulgaricus. The results show that the best nitrogen source was a combination of 5 g/L of yeast extract and 10 g/L of peptone. Both cellular growth and enzymatic activity increased with sucrose concentration in the feeding medium (from 200 to 500 g/L). When the sucrose concentration reached 600 g/L, both cellular growth and enzymatic activity decreased.

A strong association between the benefits of physical exercise on the cardiovascular disease with an improvement of the endothelium-derived relaxing factor production has been consistently shown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise training associated with high caloric diet in the reactivity of rat mesenteric and aortic rings. Experimental protocol consisted of 4 weeks of high caloric diet consumption previous to 4 weeks of run training (1.2 km/h, 0% grade, in sessions of 60 min, 5 days/week). Concentrations of triglycerides, glucose, insulin and nitrite/nitrate levels were measured and atherogenic index was calculated. Concentration-response curves to acetylcholine (10 nM-100 mu M), sodium nitroprusside (100 pM-100 nM) and phenylephrine (1 nM-3 mu M) were obtained. Exercise training reduced body mass (6%) and triglyceride levels (about 54%), without changes in glucose and insulin concentrations. An improvement of endothelium-dependent relaxation responses to acetylcholine in mesenteric and aortic rings was observed in trained group. No changes were seen for sodium nitroprusside and phenylephrine. In conclusion, our study is the first to show clearly that run training promotes an improvement of the endothelium-dependent relaxing response in aorta and mesenteric rings from rats fed with high caloric diet and that is associated with increase of NO production. Background: Animal models appear well-suited for studies into the role of exercise in the prevention of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The aim of the present study was to analyze glucose homeostasis and blood lactate during an exercise swimming test in rats treated with alloxan during the neonatal period and/or fed a high calorie diet from weaning onwards. Methods: Rats were injected with alloxan (200 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle (citrate buffer) at 6 days of age. After weaning, rats were divided into four groups and fed either a balanced diet or a high-caloric diet as follows: C, control group (vehicle + normal diet); A, alloxan-treated rats fed the normal diet; H, vehicle-treated rats fed the high-caloric diet; and HA, alloxan-treated rats fed the high-caloric diet. Results: Fasting serum glucose levels were higher in groups A and AH compared with the control group. The Homeostatic Model Assessment index varied in the groups as follows: H > A > HA = C. There were no differences in free fatty acids or blood lactate concentrations during the swim test. Conclusions: Alloxan-treated rats fed a normal or high-caloric diet have the potential to be used in studies analyzing the role physical exercise plays in the prevention of NIDDM.
