The spastic (spa) and oscillator (ot) mouse have naturally occurring mutations in the inhibitory glycine receptor (GlyR) and exhibit severe motor disturbances when exposed to unexpected sensory stimuli. We examined the effects of the spa and ot mutations on GlyR- and GABA(A)R-mediated synaptic transmission in the superficial dorsal horn (SFDH), a spinal cord region where inhibition is important for nociceptive processing. Spontaneous mIPSCs were recorded from visually identified neurones in parasagittal spinal cord slices. Neurones received exclusively GABA(A)R-mediated mIPSCs, exclusively GlyR-mediated mIPSCs or both types of mIPSCs. In control mice (wild-type and spa/+) over 40 % of neurones received both types of mIPSCs, over 30 % received solely GABA(A)R-mediated mIPSCs and the remainder received solely GlyR-mediated mIPSCs. In spa/spa animals, 97 % of the neurones received exclusively GABA(A)ergic or both types of mIPSCs. In ot/ot animals, over 80 % of the neurones received exclusively GABA(A)R-mediated mIPSCs. GlyR-mediated mIPSC amplitude and charge were reduced in spa/spa and ot/ot animals. GABA,Rmediated mIPSC amplitude and charge were elevated in spa/spa but unaltered in ot/ot animals. GlyR- and GABA(A)R-mediated mIPSC decay times were similar for all genotypes, consistent with the mutations altering receptor numbers but not kinetics. These findings suggest the spastic and oscillator mutations, traditionally considered motor disturbances, also disrupt inhibition in a sensory region associated with nociceptive transmission. Furthermore, the spastic mutation results in a compensatory increase in GABA(A)ergic transmission in SFDH neurones, a form of inhibitory synaptic plasticity absent in the oscillator mouse.

The new environment of the companies, result of the relative opening of the market caused by the globalization has set a new challenge to assure the continuity of the businesses. Competitive strategies have been implemented aiming to overcome such challenge and, amongst them, strategic alliances have shown to be a viable alternative. In this context, this article has as objective to investigate the degree of use of strategic alliances by the medium and large companies of the shoes industries located in clusters of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (RS) and Franca (SP). This exploratory and descriptive research had the participation of 54 companies, being 3 from Vale do Rio dos Sinos and 21 from Franca, which answered a questionnaire with closed questions. The analysis of the data was given through descriptive statistics. Main conclusions, follow as: (1) the majority of the companies have joint activities; (2) the companies are nearer to alliances that do business than to the strategic ones; (3) alliances with competitors are inexpressive - suppliers and customers predominate; (4) the control of alliances result is insufficient; (5) trust and adequate partner are determinative factors.

Concern about the growing demand of food and fuel has focused the attention on countries with conditions to provide for global requirements. Also, the build-up of an environmental awareness has compelled several governments to implement programs for the addition of biofuels to oil derivatives. Considering their relevance as world and South American producers, this study makes a characterization of the sucro-energetic sectors of Brazil and Colombia, based on a view of agro-industrial systems, industrial organization and transaction cost economy. The approach followed considered of a secondary information survey and in-depth interviews. The main differences found are centered on institutional development level and production volumes. However, the use of the same raw material, sugarcane, trade opening policies, cultural approaches and regional integration, are factors that could generate links of commercial exchange and technological cooperation between the two countries.

The Independence of Brazil was proclaimed in September 1822 after two years during which constituent deputies elected on both sides of the Atlantic and gathered in Lisbon endeavoured to achieve unification with the former Portuguese metropoli. Due to the failure of these attempts a Constituent Assembly settled in independent Brazil in July 1823. Those two parlamentary experiences - the first to take place in the Portuguese dominions - were strongly influenced by the decisions adopted in Cadiz (1810-1814), and in Madrid (1820-1823), and by the independentist processes developed at the time in Spanish America. This work aims at observing that influence on the decisions adopted in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro vis-a-vis the autonomical reivindications of several Brazilian provinces.

Based on a comprehensive study in research centers and libraries, a panorama of the critical response to Argentine rock in academic circles has been traced in various fields of knowledge. Research works including books, trade magazines, and academic papers on this musical movement spanning four decades have been consulted. The results show that the criticism has generated a ""developing tradition"" around the movement, mainly in the Social and Communication Sciences, and it has presented the following predominant traits: approaching rock essentially as a determinant of ""social identities""; periodization in the genre according to political regime: and analysis of the lyrics based solely on content. These traits contribute to a delimitation of rock as an exclusive phenomenon of the mass media, which relegates to secondary importance its aesthetic function and its relationship with other artistic series. Furthermore, we have observed a scarcity of approaches to rock lyrics as a linguistic-discursive surface.

When an elementary proposition is instituted, the pictorial relations establish a contact between the proposition and the fact. This seems to commit the Tractarian project with a psychological view, but this is not the case because the point of view of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is concerned with the conditions of possibility of the representation. In this paper my objective is twofold. First, I show that the thought plays a basic function in the institution of a picture. Second, I show that the fact that the thought plays an important role in the institution of a picture does not commit the Tractarian project with an inquiry of psychological nature.

This article aims to discuss Locke`s compatibilism, that is, the lokean thesis that freedom is compatible with the natural necessity. To this end, it is analized the chapter Of The Power (XXI, book II of the An Essay concerning Human Understanding), in which Locke clarifies the concepts of freedom and will. Although Locke, at times, involves himself with the incongruent thesis on compatibilism, he is a compatibilist. The impression that Locke would defend incompatibilists` theories ends up being abandoned when we analyze carefully his general argument about will and freedom. Locke literally defends that the volunteer does not differ from the necessary. As a compatibilist, Locke maintains that will is not free. Thus, the free man can not be the one that is free to want. A man regarded as a free agent is the one that has freedom of action, not freedom of will.

Introduction: Laparoscopic nephrectomy in children has become a reasonable alternative to open nephrectomy and has replaced open surgery for many renal diseases. The purpose of our study is to evaluate transperitoneal videolaparoscopic procedures in renal benign diseases in comparison to an open surgery approach. Patients and methods: 34 children aged between 17 days and 15 years old (mean 6.14) were divided into two groups in order to be submitted to nephrectomy. The first one underwent transperitoneal videolaparoscopic nephrectomy and was composed by 21 patients aged from 2 months to 15 years (mean 7.42), from which 12 were females and 9 males. The second group was submitted to open nephrectomy and was composed by 13 patients aged from 17 days to 11 years (mean 3.91), 6 females and 7 males. The groups were compared regarding anesthesic time, operative time, length of hospital stay, postoperative pain and time of reintroduction of oral intake. Short and long term complications were also evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed by Student t-test with the level of significance set at P < 0.05. The study was previously approved by the Committee on Ethics in Research of our institution. Results: Significant statistical difference was observed only for the variable length of hospital stay. No laparoscopy group case was converted to open surgery. There was no immediate or late complication. Blood loss was negligible and no transfusion was required. Conclusions: In our experience, transperitoneal videolaparoscopic nephrectomy has similar results to open nephrectomy, except for time of hospitalization. (C) 2009 AEU. With the aim to compare the cost of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis therapy with desease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS) for a 48-month period, were studied five different treatment stage based on clinical protocols recommended by the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology, and then five therapy cycles. The analytical model based on the Markov Analysis, considered chaces for the patient continue in some stages or change between them according with a positive effect on outcomes. Only direct costs were comprised in the analyzed data, like drugs, materials and tests used for monitoring these patients. The results of the model show that the stage in with metotrexato drug is used like monotherapy was cost-effective (R$ 113,900,00 for patient during 48 months), followed by refractory patient (R$ 1,554,483,43), those that use therapy triplicate followed by infleximable drug (R$ 1, 701, 286.76), the metotrexato intolearant patient (R$ 2,629,919,14), and final the result from that use metotrexato and infliximable in the beginning (R$ 9,292,879,31). The sensitivity analysis confirm this results, when alternate the efficacy of metotrexato and infliximabe.

Introduction: Smoking is a serious worldwide public health problem. Animal models act as a bridge between laboratory and human studies. The models applied are difficult to reproduce because of the use of different types of inhalation chambers and mainly because of the lack of continuous monitoring of smoke concentration. Objective: To develop an inhalation chamber for rats (with only the nose exposed) in which the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) can be maintained and monitored constantly. Material and methods: Male Wistar rats weighing 250 g were exposed to 50 ppm CO produced by the smoke from a filter-free cigarette. The animals were submitted to a single 2-h exposure and then sacrificed at 0, 4, 24 and 48 h. The control group was left restrained inside the small perpendicular chambers, receiving only 5 L/min of compressed air. Results: The model was able to increase HbCO levels immediately after the end of exposure (p < 0.001). with a decrease being observed from 2 h onwards when compared to the levels of the control group. Plasma cotinine increased immediately after exposure, and showed still detectable levels at 2 and 4 h (p < 0.05). Conclusion: We conclude that the presented inhalation chamber system is able to maintain a controlled CO concentration in a model in which small animals are exposed to the inhalation of cigarette smoke, permitting well-controlled studies, as well as investigations involving other toxic gases and air pollutants. Background: Concurrent autoimmune disorders (CAIDs) have been shown to occur in 22% to 34% of the patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Their presence has been linked to female gender, older age, and to certain HLA antigens, namely HLA-A11. DRB1*04, and DRB4*01. Aims: To assess the frequency and nature of CAID in Brazilian patients with AIH types 1 (AIH-1) and 2 (AIH-2) and to investigate the influence of age, gender, and genetic background in their occurrence. Patients and Methods: The presence and nature of CAID was studied in 143 patients [117 females, median age 11 (1.3 to 69)] with AIH-1 (n = 125) and AIH-2 (n = 28). HLA typing and tumor necrosis factor a gene promoter and exon I cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) gene polymorphisms were determined by polymerase chain reaction-based techniques. Results: The frequency of CAID was similar in patients with AIH-1 (14%) and AIH-2 (18%), but their nature was shown to vary. Arthritis was seen in half of the patients (n = 8) with CAID and AIH-1 and in none of those with AIH-2. Subjects with AIH-1 and CAID were shown to be older [24 (1.3 to 6 1) vs. 11 (1.3 to 69) y P = 0.02] and to have more often circulating antinuclear antibody (76% vs. 40%, P = 0.008) and less frequently antiactin antibodies (33% vs. 75%, P = 0.008) when compared with their counterparts without CAID. No particular HLA-DR and DQ alleles, as well as tumor necrosis factor a and CTLA-4 genotypes, were associated with CAID. Conclusions: The nature, but not the frequency, of CAID was shown to vary in AIH-1 and AIH-2. In subjects with AIH-1, CAID was linked to older subjects and to the presence of antinuclear antibody. No predisposition to CAID was associated to HLA-DRB1*04 or DDB4*01 alleles. The observed lower frequency of CAID could be attributed to the lower age of disease onset in Brazilians and to differences in HLA-encoded susceptibility to AIH-1 observed in South America.

Candida spp. are important healthcare-associated pathogens. Identifying the source of infection is important for prevention and control strategies. The objective of this study was to evaluate candida colonisation sites as potential sources for candidaemia. Sixty-three consecutive patients with a positive blood culture for candida were included. Surveillance cultures were collected from urine, rectum, oropharynx, skin, intravascular catheter tip and skin around catheter. Molecular typing was performed when the same species of candida was isolated from blood and surveillance sites of a patient. C. albicans was associated with 42% of candidaemias, C. parapsilosis 33%, C. tropicalis 16% and C. guilliermondii, C. krusei, C. glabrata, C. holmii and C. metapsilosis were all 2% each. Six of 10 C. parapsilosis catheter tip isolates were indistinguishable from corresponding blood isolates (all in neonates). C. albicans isolates from blood were indistinguishable from corresponding gastrointestinal, tract isolates in 13 of 26 patients and from catheter tip isolates in two patients. In conclusion, the results suggest that gastrointestinal colonisation is the probable source of C. albicans candidaemia and C. parapsilosis is exogenous. (C) 2009 The Hospital, Infection Society. OBJECTIVE. To identify risk factors associated with nosocomial bloodstream infections caused by multiple clones of the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IV strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). DESIGN. An unmatched case-control study (at a ratio of 1 : 2) performed during the period from October 2002 through September 2003. SETTING. A 2,000-bed tertiary care teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. METHODS. Case patients (n = 30) were defined either as patients who had a bloodstream infection due to SCCmec type IV strains of MRSA diagnosed at least 48 hours after hospital admission or as neonates with the infection who were born in the hospital. Control patients (n = 60) were defined as patients with SCCmec type III MRSA infection diagnosed at least 48 hours after hospital admission. Genes n = 60 encoding virulence factors were studied in the isolates recovered from case patients, and molecular typing of the SCCmec type IV MRSA isolates was also done by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. RESULTS. In multivariate analysis, the following 3 variables were significantly associated with having a nosocomial bloodstream infection caused by SCCmec type IV strains of MRSA: an age of less than 1 year, less frequent use of a central venous catheter (odds ratio [OR], 0.07 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 0.02-0.28]; P = .001), and female sex. A second analysis was performed that excluded the case and Pp. 001 control patients from the neonatal unit, and, in multivariate analysis, the following variables were significantly associated with having a nosocomial bloodstream infection caused by SCCmec type IV strains of MRSA: less frequent use of a central venous catheter (OR, 0.12 [95% CI, 0.03-0.55]; P = .007), lower Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score on admission (OR, 0.14 [95% CI, 0.03-0.61];), less frequent surgery (OR, 0.21 [95% CI, 0.06-0.83];), and female sex (OR, 5.70 [95% CI, 1.32-24.66]; P =.020). P = .009 Pp. 025 Pp). Of the 29 SCCmec type IV MRSA isolates recovered from case patients, none contained the Panton-Valentine leukocidin, gamma-hemolysin, enterotoxin B or C, or toxic shock syndrome toxin-1. All of the isolates contained genes for the LukE-LukD leukocidin and alpha-hemolysin. Genes for enterotoxin A were present in 1 isolate, and genes for beta-hemolysin were present in 3 isolates. CONCLUSIONS. ""Classical"" risk factors do not apply to patients infected with the SCCmec type IV strain of MRSA, which is an important cause of nosocomial bacteremia. This strain infects a patient population that is less ill and has had less frequent invasive procedures than a patient population infected with the multidrug-resistant strain of SCCmec type III MRSA. We found that virulence factors were rare and that Panton-Valentine leukocidin was absent. There were multiple clones of the SCCmec type IV strain in our hospital. Children under 1 year of age were at a higher risk. There was a predominant clone ( sequence type 5) in this patient population.
