Boron compounds are widely used in synthetic chemistry. The synthesis of the compounds is relatively easy, presenting thermodynamic stability and synthetic versatility. Almost all of them show electrophilic reactivity. Recently, some boryllithium species have been reported as a base or a nucleophile in reaction with organic electrophiles in S(N)2 reactions. In the present work, the proton affinity (PA) of boryllithium compounds was calculated. These values can be useful as theoretical reference values and to provide valuable complementary information for the interpretation and discussion of the basicity of these compounds. The proton affinity was calculated using a theoretical method based on density functional theory and high-level theoretical methods through MP2 and G2MP2 levels of theory. In addition, some global and local reactivity indexes based on density functional theory (DFT) on boryllithium compounds were studied. In order to compare and discuss the chemical reactivity of these compounds, some analogues and electrophilic boron compounds were also studied. Our results showed a local and global nucleophilic reactivity of the boryllithium molecules in agreement with the experimental. reactivity. The boryllithium compounds revealed to be strong bases in comparison to other analogue compounds studied in this work.

Basic structural aspects about the layered hexaniobate of K(4)Nb(6)O(17) composition and its proton-exchanged form were investigated mainly by spectroscopic techniques. Raman spectra of hydrous K(4)Nb(6)O(17) and H(2)K(2)Nb(6)O(17)center dot H(2)O show significant modifications in the 950-800 cm(-1) region (Nb-O stretching mode of highly distorted NbO(6) octahedra). The band at 900 cm(-1) shifts to 940 cm(-1) after the replacement of K(+) ion by proton. Raman spectra of the original materials and the related deuterated samples are similar suggesting that no isotopic effect occurs. Major modifications were observed when H(2)K(2)Nb(6)O(17) was dehydrated: the relative intensity of the band at 940 cm(-1) decreases and new bands seems to be present at about 860-890 cm(-1). The H(+) ions should be shielded by the hydration sphere what preclude the interaction with the layers. Removing the water molecules, H(+) ions can establish a strong interaction with oxygen atoms, decreasing the bond order of Nb-O linkage. X-ray absorption near edge structure studies performed at Nb K-edge indicate that the niobium coordination number and oxidation state remain identical after the replacement of potassium by proton. From the refinement of the fine structure, it appears that the Nb-Nb coordination shell is divided into two main contributions of about 0.33 and 0.39 nm, and interestingly the population, i.e., the number of backscattering atoms is inversed between the two hexaniobate materials. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Red, blue and green emitting rare earth compounds (RE(3+) = Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Tb(3+)) containing the benzenetricarboxylate ligands (BTC) [hemimellitic (EMA), trimellitic (TLA) and trimesic (TMA)] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration, X-ray diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complexes presented the following formula: [RE(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [RE(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [RE(TMA)(H(2)O)(G)], except for Tb-TMA compound, which was obtained only as anhydrous. Phosphorescence data of Gd(3+)-(BTC) complexes showed that the triplet states (T) of the BTC(3-) anions have energy higher than the main emitting states of the Eu(3+) ((5)D(0)) and Tb(3+) ((5)D(4)), indicating that BTC ligands can act as intramolecular energy donors for these metal ions. The high values of experimental intensity parameters (Omega(2)) of Eu(3+)-(BTC) complexes indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. Based on the luminescence spectra, the energy transfer from the T state of BTC ligands to the excited (5)D(0) and (5)D(4) levels of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions is discussed. The emission quantum efficiencies (eta) of the (5)D(0) emitting level of the Eu(3+) ion have been also determined. In the case of the Tb(3+) ion, the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) (J=0-6), indicating that the BTC ligands are good sensitizers. The RE(3+)-(BTC) complexes act as efficient light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) and can be used as tricolor luminescent materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Increased diastereoisomeric excesses are obtained for the sulfanylation reactions of some 2-methylsulfinyl cyclanones under phase-transfer catalysis using the chiral catalyst QUIBEC instead of TEBA. The optically pure (SS,2S)-2-methylsulfinyl-2-methylsulfanylcyclohexanone thus prepared reacts with ethyl acetate lithium enolate affording, after hydrolysis, (R)-2-[(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl]-2-hydroxycyclohexanone in 60% ee. Density functional theory calculations (at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level) can successfully explain the origin of this result as the kinetically favored axial attack of the nucleophile to the carbonyl group of the most stable conformer of the cyclanone, in which the CH(3)SO and CH(3)S groups are at the equatorial and axial positions, respectively. The enantiomers of sulfoxide proton pump inhibitors - omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole and Ro 18-5364 - were enantiomerically separated by liquid chromatography at multimilligram scale on a poly saccharide-based chiral stationary phase using normal and polar organic conditions as mobile phase. The values of the recovery and production rate were significant for each enantiomer; better results were achieved using a solid-phase injection system. However, this system was applied just for the enantionteric separation of omeprazole to demonstrate the applicability of this injection mode at milligram scale. The chiroptical characterization of the compounds was performed using a polarimeter and a circular dichroism detector. The higher enantiomeric purity obtained for the isolated enantiomers suggests that the methods here described should be considered as a simple and rapid way to obtain enantiomeric pure standards for analytical purpose. The presence of paramagnetic species in the aqueous ring opening metathesis polymerizations of the exo,exo-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid monomer with RuCl(3) and K(2)[RuCl(5)H(2)O] compounds was studied using ESR techniques. It was observed that the intensities of the Ru(III) signals in the ESR spectra decrease on the time scale of the induction period so that the ROMP can take place. The intensity of the Ru(III) signal almost disappeared 50 min after reacting with K(2)[RuCl(5)H(2)O] and after 100 mm in the case of RuCl(3). Reactions of the cis-[Ru(NH(3))(4)(H(2)O)(2)](tfms)(3) and [Ru(NH(3))(5)H(2)O](tfms)(3) complexes with the monomer and different organic compounds representing the organic functions in the monomer (furan, norbornene, but-2-ene-1,4-diol and formic, acetic, oxalic and maleic acids) were also monitored by ESR and UV/vis spectra. It was deduced that the organic acids provide the disappearance of the Ru(III) signal. The proton NMR relaxation times of the residual water in D(2)O for reactions with oxalic acid suggested that the presence of paramagnetic ions in the solution decreases along with

Microalgae are promising microorganisms for the production of food and fine chemicals. Several species of microalgae are used in aquaculture with the purpose of transfer bioactive compounds up to the aquatic food chain. The main objective of this project was to develop a stress–inducement strategy in order to enhance the biochemical productivity of Nannochloropsis gaditana, Rhodomonas marina and Isochrysis sp. for aquaculture purposes having in account their growth and organizational differences. In this regard, two experiments were design: the first one consisted on the alteration of overall nutrient availabilities in growth medium; and the second one comprised changes in nitrogen and sulfur concentrations maintaining the concentrations of the other nutrients present in a commercial growth medium (Nutribloom plus), which is frequently used in aquaculture. Microalgae dried biomass was characterized biochemically and elemental analysis was also performed for all samples. In first experimental design: linear trends between nutrient availability in growth media and microalgae protein content were obtained; optimum productivities of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) were attained for both R. marina and N. gaditana in growth media enriched with 1000 L L-1 of nutrient solution whereas for Isochrysis sp. the double of Nutribloom plus was needed; the decrease of glucans and total monosaccharides with nutrient availability for R. marina and Isochrysis sp. showed the occurrence of a possible depletion of carbohydrates towards lipids and proteins biosynthesis. Second experimental desing: N. gaditana exhibited the highest variation in their biochemical composition against the applied perturbation; variations observed for microalgae in their biochemical composition were reflected in their elemental stoichiometry; in N. gaditana the highest nitrogen concentrations lead to overall maximum productivities of the biochemical parameters. The results of the present work show two stress-inducement strategies for microalgae that may constitute a base for further investigations on their biochemical enhancement.

The sensitized photolysis of [Ru(NH3)(6)](2+) by the organic dye rhodamine B and biacetyl was studied under conditions in which only the sensitizer absorbs. The reaction products resulting from ammonia aquation and Ru(II) to Ru(III) oxidation are the same for direct and sensitized photolysis. The energy transfer rate constant, calculated from the fluorescence quenching of rhodamine B, is similar to that estimated from the limiting quantum yield of the photosensitized photoaquation of the complex. Both reactions originate from a common reactive low-lying ligand-field (LF) state, which is also responsible for the direct photolysis reactions. This state, which leads directly to photoaquation, seems to have a certain charge transfer to solvent (CTTS) character, which is responsible for the photo-oxidation products. Sensitization is effective with rhodamine B (17 450 cm(-1)) and biacetyl (19 000 cm(-1)), whereas no reaction is observed with neutral red (16 900 cm(-1)). These results show that the excited state responsible for the photochemical reactions lies in the energy range between 16 900 cm(-1) and 17 700 cm(-1) and possesses spin-orbit character.

The presence of trace basic organonitrogen compounds such as quinoline and pyridine in derivative petroleum fuels plays an important role in maintaining the engines of vehicles. However, these substances can contaminate the environment and so must be controlled because most of them are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. For these reasons, a reliable and sensitive method was developed for the determination of basic nitrogen compounds in fuel samples such as gasoline and diesel. This method utilizes preconcentration on an ion-exchange resin (Amberlyte IR - 120 H) followed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on a glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of quinoline and pyridine as studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that their reduction occurs via a reversible electron transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Very well resolved diffusion-controlled voltammetric peaks were obtained in dimethylformamide (DMF) with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAF(4) 0.1 mol L-1) for quinoline (-1.95 V) and pyridine (-2.52 V) vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat reference electrode. The proposed DPV method displayed a good linear response from 0.10 to 300 mg L-1 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.05 and 0.25 mu g L-1 for quinoline and pyridine, respectively. Using the method of standard additions, the simultaneous determination of quinoline and pyridine in gasoline samples yielded 25.0 +/- 0.3 and 33.0 +/- 0.7 mg L-1 and in diesel samples yielded 80.3 +/- 0.2 and 131 +/- 0.4 mg L-1, respectively. Spike recoveries were 94.4 +/- 0.3% and 10 +/- 0.5% for quinoline and pyridine, respectively, in the fuel determinations. This proposed method was also compared with UV-vis spectrophotometric measurements. Results obtained for the two methods agreed well based on F and t student's tests.

The presence of trace neutral organonitrogen compounds as carbazole and indole in derivative petroleum fuels plays an important role in the car's engine maintenance. In addition, these substances contribute to the environmental contamination and their control is necessary because most of them are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. For those reasons, a reliable and sensitive method was proposed for the determination of neutral nitrogen compounds in fuel samples, such as gasoline and diesel using preconcentration with modified silica gel (Merck 70-230 mesh ASTM) followed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique on a glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of carbazole and indole studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that their reduction occurs via a reversible electron transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Very well resolved diffusion controlled voltammetric peaks were obtained in dimethylformamide (DMF) with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAF(4) 0.1 mol L-1) for indole (-2.27 V) and carbazole (-2.67 V) versus Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat reference electrode. The proposed DPV method showed a good linear response range from 0.10 to 300 mg L-1 and a limit of detection (L.O.D) of 7.48 and 2.66 mu g L-1 for indole and carbazole, respectively. The results showed that simultaneous determination of indole and carbazole presents in spiked gasoline samples were 15.8 +/- 0.3 and 64.6 +/- 0.9 mg L-1 and in spiked diesel samples were 9.29 +/- 1 and 142 +/- 1 mg L-1, respectively. The recovery was evaluated and the results shown the values of 88.9 +/- 0.4 and 90.2 +/- 0.8% for carbazole and indole in fuel determinations. The proposed method was also compared with UV-vis spectrophotometric measures and the results obtained for the two methods were in good agreement according to the F and t Student's tests. Visible frequency upconversion emission through resonant energy-transfer involving neodymium and praseodymium ions in PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass excited by a semiconductor laser at 8 10 nm is investigated. Luminescence emission centered around 485, 530, 610, and 645 nm, which correspond to the P-3(0) -> H-3(4), P-3(1) + I-1(6) -> H-3(5), P-3(0) -> H-3(6) and P-1(0) -> F-3(2) transitions of praseodymium ions, respectively, are observed. The upconversion excitation of the Pr3+ ions excited-state emitting levels was accomplished by means of an ion-pair interaction involving ground-state absorption, multiphonon relaxation, and excited-state absorption of pump photons at 8 10 nm by the Nd3+ (I-4(9/2) -> H-2(9/2), F-4(5/2); F-4(3/2) -> P-2(1/2)) and direct energy-transfer to Pr3+ ((4)G(11/2) + K-2(11/2), H-3(4) -> I-4(9/2), P-3(1) + I-1(6)). The dependence of the upconversion emission intensity upon the excitation power, and neodymium concentration are also examined. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The K+ reversible processes for ion exchange in KhFek[Fe(CN)(6)](l)center dot mH(2)O host compounds (Prussian Blue) were thermodynamically analyzed. A thermodynamic approach was established and developed based on the consideration of a lattice-gas model where the electronic contribution to the chemical potential is neglected and the ion-host interaction is not considered. The occupation fraction of the intercalation process was calculated from the kinetic parameters obtained through ac-electrogravimetry in a previous paper. In this way, the mass potential transfer function introduces a new way to evaluate the thermodynamic aspect of intercalation. Finally, based on the thermodynamic approach, the energy used to put each K+ ion into the host material was calculated. The values were shown to be in good agreement with the values obtained through transient techniques, for example, cyclic voltammetry. As a result, this agreement between theory and experimental data validates the thermodynamic approach considered here, and for the first time, the thermodynamic aspects of insertion were considered for mixed valence materials.

The influence of the axial organic ligand R on the electrochemical oxidation of the compounds [RCoIII(salen)DMF)], where salen is bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediimine, and R CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, s-C4H9, i-C4H9, CH2Cl, CF3CH2, c-C6H11CH2, c-C6H11, C6H5, C6H5CH2, p-CH3C6H4CH2, and p-NO2C6H4CH2, was studied by means of cyclic voltametry in dimethylformamide (DMF), 0.2 M in tetraethylammonium perchlorate (TEAP), at 25 and -20°C, with a platinum disc working electrode. The above-mentioned compounds can be classified according to their electrochemical behavior. (a) The complexes with R CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, c-C6H11CH2, and C6H5 undergo a reversible one-electron oxidation in the 10-50 V s-1 potential scan range. At slower scan rates, the oxidized product decomposes chemically. At -20°C, this chemical step is slow, and a reversible one-electron electrochemical oxidation is observed. (b) The compounds with R CH2Cl, C6H5CH2, p-CH3C6H4CH2 and p-NO2C6H4CH2 undergo a quasi-reversible one-electron oxidation at room temperaure. At -20°C, the electrochemical process becomes more complex. A following chemical reactions is coupled to the quasi-reversible one-electron transfer. Two reduction peaks are observed. (c) The compounds with R i-C4H9, s-C4H9, and c-C6H11 undergo a reversible one-electron oxidation at -20°C. At room temperature, the irreversible chemical reaction following the electron transfer step is too fast to allow the isolation of the electrochemical step. (d) At -20°C, the derivatives with R C2H5, c-C6H11 CH2 and c-C6H11 are adsorbed at the electrode surface. Evidence indicates that the reagent in these reactions is the pentacoordinated species [RCoIII(salen)]. A linear free-energy relationship between E1/2 (for reversible processes) and the Taft polar parameters o* was obtained with a slope of ρ* = 0.25 ± 0.03. As expected, the benzyl derivatives which present mesomeric effects do not fit this polar correlation. The rated of the electrochemical oxidation is also affected by the nature of the ligand R. For the ligands which are strong electron-withdrawing groups and for the benzyl derivatives, the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of the metal ion decreases at room temperature. At lower temperatures, it is suggested that the oxidation to the CoIV-R species is followed by a chemical reaction in which this complex is partly transformed into a CoIII(R*) species, which is reduced at a much more cathodic potential than the Co(IV) species. © 1979.

The influence of the equatorial ligand on the electrochemical oxidation of the compounds [H3CCo(chel)B], where chel is bis (dimethylglyoximato), (DH)2; bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediimine, salen; bis(salicylaldehyde) o-phenylenediimine, salophen; bis(salicylaldehyde)cyclohexylenediimine, salcn; bis(acetylacetone) ethylenediimine, bae; and where B is pyridine when chel is (DH2), and dimethylformamide (DMF) when chel represents a Schiff base (salen, salcn, salophen and bae), was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry in DMF, 0.2 M in tetraethylammonium perchlorate, between 25 and -25°C, with a platinum disk working electrode. Absorption spectra in the visible and near ultraviolet regions for these compounds in DMF at 25°C were obtained. The complexes exhibit a reversible one-electron oxidation, at -20°C with scan rates >0.5 V s-; chemical reactions following electron transfer are not detected under these conditions. At slower potential or higher temperatures, the oxidized product decomposes chemically in a solvent-assisted (or nucleophile-assisted) reaction, yielding products which are electroactive in the applied potential range. The behavior of the [H3CCo (DH2)py] derivative is better described as a quasi-reversible charge transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Experimental evidence suggests that in the case of the [H3CCo(bae)] derivative at -20°C, the reactive -species is pentacoordinated and weakly adsorbed at the electrode surface. The value of E 1 2 and the energies of the first two absorption bands in the visible spectra reveal the ability of the studied complexes to donate and to delocalize electronic charge. © 1982.

The electrochemical oxidation of some p-substituted benzylic derivatives of Co(III) dimethylglyoximato and Co(III)bis(salicylaldehydc)o-phenylenediimine in dimethylformamide. 0.2 M in tetraethyammonium perchlorate, on a platinum electrode, at several temperatures, is described as an ECE type, the first electrochemical step being a quasi-reversible one-electron charge transfer at room temperature. At temperatures around -20°C, or lower, the influence of the irreversible chemical decomposition of the oxidized species, via a solvent or other nucleophilic-assisted reaction, is negligible. It is suggested that at low temperatures the oxidation to the formally CoIV-R species is followed by an isomerization reaction in which this complex is partially transformed in a CoIII-(R) species or a s π-complex which undergoes an electroreduction at less positive potentials than those corresponding to the reduction of the CoIV-R species. © 1982.
