This paper presents a framework that uses ear images for human identification. The framework makes use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for ear image feature extraction and Multilayer Feed Forward Neural Network for classification. Framework are proposed to improve recognition accuracy of human identification. The framework was tested on an ear image database to evaluate its reliability and recognition accuracy. The experimental results showed that our framework achieved higher stable recognition accuracy and over-performed other existing methods. The recognition accuracy stability and computation time with respect to different image sizes and factors were investigated thoroughly as well in the experiments.

This study aims at developing abstract metamodels for approximating highly nonlinear relationships within a metal casting plant. Metal casting product quality nonlinearly depends on many controllable and uncontrollable factors. For improving the productivity of the system, it is vital for operation planners to predict in advance the amount of high quality products. Neural networks metamodels are developed and applied in this study for predicting the amount of saleable products. Training of metamodels is done using the Levenberg-Marquardt and Bayesian learning methods. Statistical measures are calculated for the developed metamodels over a grid of neural network structures. Demonstrated results indicate that Bayesian-based neural network metamodels outperform the Levenberg-Marquardt-based metamodels in terms of both prediction accuracy and robustness to the metamodel complexity. In contrast, the latter metamodels are computationally less expensive and generate the results more quickly.

Many policy decisions for agricultural management in the coastal region closely depend on the extent of intrusion of sea water. In this study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to model the spatial variation of Electrical Conductivity to determine the extent of sea water intrusion in the coastal area of Brisbane, Australia. Quarterly EC data obtained from the observation (monitoring) wells located along the coast is used for training ANN architecture. The study demonstrates that ANN is able to model the spatial variation of EC with very good accuracy (even with very less training records) when some spatial information is used as one of the inputs in the network training. The results considerable improvement when compared with the network trained without the distance information.
