A study of samples dredged within areas of tectonic arc-trench systems (Kermadec and New Hebrides) allows to distinguish three types of ferromanganese mineralization. Relationship between mineral and geochemical specialization is established. A conclusion is made that ferromanganese mineralization is a permanent genetic series of matter supply: from endogenic (hydrothermal solution is a dominant source at deposition of chemical elements from mixture seawater plus hydrothermal solutions) to hydrogenic (seawater is a dominant source at element deposition). This results in geochemical and mineralogical variety of ferromanganese mineralization within this part of the Pacific Ocean.

Genetic diversity of baltic F. vesiculosus is low compared to other populations which might jeopardize their potential for adaptation to climate change. Especially the early life-stage F. vesiculosus may be threaten by ocean warming and acidification. To test this, we exposed F. vesiculosus germlings to warming and acidification in the near-natural scenario in the "Kiel Outdoor Benthocosms" maintaining the natural variation of the Kiel Fjord, Germany (54°27 'N, 10°11 'W) in all seasons (spring 2013 - 2014). Warming was simulated by using a delta treatment adding 5 °C and by increasing pCO2 at 1000 µatm. Warming positively affected germlings' growth in spring and in summer but decreased non-photochemical quenching in spring and survival in summer. Acidified conditions showed much weaker effects than warming. The high genotypic variation in stress sensitivity as well as the enhanced survival at high diversity levels indicate higher potential for adaptation for genetically diverse populations. We conclude that the combination of stressors and season determines the sensitivity to environmental stress and that genetic variation is crucial for the adaptation to climate change stress.

Net Primary Production was measured using the 14**C uptake method with minor modifications. Melt pond samples were spiked with 0.1µCi ml**-1 of 14**C labelled sodium bicarbonate (Moravek Biochemicals, Brea, USA) and distributed in 10 clear bottles (20 ml each). Subsequently they were incubated for 12 h at -1.3°C under different scalar irradiances (0-420 µmol photons m**-2 s**-1) measured with a spherical sensor (Spherical Micro Quantum Sensor US-SQS/L, Heinz Walz, Effeltrich, Germany). At the end of the incubation, samples were filtered onto 0.2 µm nitrocellulose filters and the particulate radioactive carbon uptake was determined by liquid scintillation counting using Filter count scintillation cocktail (Perkin Elmer, Waltham, USA). The carbon uptake values in the dark were subtracted from the carbon uptake values measured in the light incubations. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was measured for each sample using the flow injection system (Hall and Aller, 1992). The DIC concentration was taken into account to calculate the amount of labeled bicarbonate incorporated into the cell. Carbon fixation rates were normalized volumetrically and by chlorophyll a. Photosynthesis-irradiance curves (PI curves) were fitted using MATLAB® according to the equation proposed by Platt et al. (1980) including a photoinhibition parameter (beta) and providing the main photosynthetic parameters: maximum Chla normalized carbon fixation rate if there were no photoinhibition (Pb) and the initial slope of the saturation curve (alpha). The derived parameters: light intensity at which photosynthesis is maximal (Im), the carbon fixation rate at that maximal irradiance (Pbm) and the adaptation parameter or photoacclimation index (Ik) were calculated according to Platt et al. (1982).

Ocean acidification reduces the concentration of carbonate ions and increases those of bicarbonate ions in seawater compared with the present oceanic conditions. This altered composition of inorganic carbon species may, by interacting with ultraviolet radiation (UVR), affect the physiology of macroalgal species. However, very little is known about how calcareous algae respond to UVR and ocean acidification. Therefore, we conducted an experiment to determine the effects of UVR and ocean acidification on the calcified rhodophyte Corallina officinalis using CO2-enriched cultures with and without UVR exposure. Low pH increased the relative electron transport rates (rETR) but decreased the CaCO3 content and had a miniscule effect on growth. However, UVA (4.25 W m-2) and a moderate level of UVB (0.5 W m-2) increased the rETR and growth rates in C. officinalis, and there was a significant interactive effect of pH and UVR on UVR-absorbing compound concentrations. Thus, at low irradiance, pH and UVR interact in a way that affects the multiple physiological responses of C. officinalis differently. In particular, changes in the skeletal content induced by low pH may affect how C. officinalis absorbs and uses light. Therefore, the light quality used in ocean acidification experiments will affect the predictions of how calcified macroalgae will respond to elevated CO2.

Basalts recovered from Sites 595 and 596 on Mesozoic crust in the southwest Pacific range from olivine-bearing tholeiites to ferrobasalts. Despite having undergone extensive low-grade alteration, which has raised K and Rb abundances, the basalts have consistent interelement ratios of Ti, Zr, Hf, rare-earth elements, Y, Th, Ik, and Nb. La/Ta (-18), Lan/Ybn (0.6), Ti/Zr (115), Zr/Nb (20), and Th/Hf (0.08) ratios all fall within the range of N-type mid-ocean-ridge basalt. The basalts from Sites 595 and 596 indicate that the Mesozoic Pacific crust was derived from a mantle source by processes similar to those operating at the present-day East Pacific Rise.

Substratum of cobalt-manganese crusts penetrated by numerous deep-sea drill holes on the IOAN and Dalmorgeologiya Guyots of Magellan Seamounts in the Pacific Ocean has been studied. Rocks have been characterized, and ferromanganese manifestations developed in the substratum in different forms have been studied in detail. They are considered to be products of deposition of water fluids arising in the volcanic pedestal and unloading on the guyot's periphery when penetrating into top parts of rocks to different degree phosphatized mainly by replacement. It is demonstrated by numerous substratum relicts and remains of organisms in them.
