The atmospheric pressure plasma jet is a capacitively coupled radio frequency discharge (13.56 MHz) running with a high helium flux (2m3 h-1) between concentric electrodes. Small amounts (0.5%) of admixed molecular oxygen do not disturb the homogeneous plasma discharge. The jet effluent leaving the discharge through the ring-shaped nozzle contains high concentrations of radicals at a low gas temperature—the key property for a variety of applications aiming at treatment of thermally sensitive surfaces. We report on absolute atomic oxygen density measurements by two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) spectroscopy in the jet effluent. Calibration is performed with the aid of a comparative TALIF measurement with xenon. An excitation scheme (different from the one earlier published) providing spectral matching of both the two-photon resonances and the fluorescence transitions is applied.

Measurements of the duration of X-ray lasing pumped with picosecond pulses from the VULCAN optical laser are obtained using a streak camera with 700 fs temporal resolution. Combined with a temporal smearing due to the spectrometer employed, we have measured X-ray laser pulse durations for Ni-like silver at 13.9 nm with a total time resolution of 1.1 ps. For Ni-like silver, the X-ray laser output has a steep rise followed by an approximately exponential temporal decay with measured full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 3.7 (+/-0.5) ps. For Ne-like nickel lasing at 23.1 nm, the measured duration of lasing is approximate to10.7 (+/-1) ps (FWHM). An estimate of the duration of the X-ray laser gain has been obtained by temporally resolving spectrally integrated continuum and resonance line emission. For Ni-like silver, this time of emission is approximate to22 (+/-2) ps (FWHM), while for Ne-like nickel we measure approximate to35 (+/-2) ps (FWHM). Assuming that these times of emission correspond to the gain duration, we show that a simple model consistently relates the gain durations to the measured durations of X-ray lasing. Interferometry has been used to investigate the spatio-temporal evolution of electron number density following 248 nm laser ablation of a magnesium target. Fringe shifts were measured as a function of laser power density for a circular spot obtained using a random phase plate. Line averaged electron number densities were obtained at delay times up to ∼100 ns after the laser pulse. Density profiles normal to the target surface were recorded for power densities on target in the range 125–300 MW cm−2.

Simultaneous optical absorption and laser-induced fluorescence measurements have been used to map the three-dimensional number densities of ground-state ions and neutrals within a low-temperature KrF laser-produced magnesium plasma expanding into vacuum. Data is reported for the symmetry plane of the plasma, which includes the laser interaction point at a delay of 1 μs after the ∼30 ns KrF laser ablation pulse and for a laser fluence of 2 J cm−2 on target. The number density distributions of ion and neutral species within this plane indicate that two distinct regions exist within the plume; one is a fast component containing ions and neutrals at maximum densities of ∼3×1013 cm−3 and ∼4×1012 cm−3, respectively and the second is a high-density region containing slow neutral species, at densities up to ∼1×1015 cm−3.

Laser-driven coherent extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) sources provide pulses lasting a few hundred attoseconds(1,2), enabling real-time access to dynamic changes of the electronic structure of matter(3,4), the fastest processes outside the atomic nucleus. These pulses, however, are typically rather weak. Exploiting the ultrahigh brilliance of accelerator-based XUV sources(5) and the unique time structure of their laser-based counterparts would open intriguing opportunities in ultrafast X-ray and high-field science, extending powerful nonlinear optical and pump-probe techniques towards X-ray frequencies, and paving the way towards unequalled radiation intensities. Relativistic laser-plasma interactions have been identified as a promising approach to achieve this goal(6-13). Recent experiments confirmed that relativistically driven overdense plasmas are able to convert infrared laser light into harmonic XUV radiation with unparalleled efficiency, and demonstrated the scalability of the generation technique towards hard X-rays(14-19). Here we show that the phases of the XUV harmonics emanating from the interaction processes are synchronized, and therefore enable attosecond temporal bunching. Along with the previous findings concerning energy conversion and recent advances in high-power laser technology, our experiment demonstrates the feasibility of confining unprecedented amounts of light energy to within less than one femtosecond.

The use of strong-field (i.e. intensities in excess of 10(13) Wcm(-2)) few-cycle ultrafast (durations of 10 femtoseconds or less) laser pulses to create, manipulate and image vibrational wavepackets is investigated. Quasi-classical modelling of the initial superposition through tunnel ionization, wavepacket modification by nonadiabatically altering the nuclear environment via the transition dipole and the Stark effect, and measuring the control outcome by fragmenting the molecule is detailed. The influence of the laser intensity on strong-field ultrafast wavepacket control is discussed in detail: by modifying the distribution of laser intensities imaged, we show that focal conditions can be created that give preference to this three-pulse technique above processes induced by the pulses alone. An experimental demonstration is presented, and the nuclear dynamics inferred by the quasi-classical model discussed. Finally, we present the results of a systematic investigation of a dual-control pulse scheme, indicating that single vibrational states should be observable with high fidelity, and the populated state defined by varying the arrival time of the two control pulses. The relevance of such strong-field coherent control methods to the manipulation of electron localization and attosecond science is discussed.

Thomson scattering is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools for plasma characterization, and it has been applied to a variety of plasmas. It is a nonintrusive technique, and the interpretation of the signal is relatively simple. However, this method has not been widely applied to low-temperature laser-ablated plasmas. Raman satellites have been observed in the scattering spectrum from a Mg laser-ablated plasma, giving this diagnostic the potential to be also used in density quantification of metastable states in plasmas.

Distributions of source intensity in two dimensions (designated the source model), averaged over a single laser pulse, based on experimental measurements of spatial coherence, are considered for radiation from the unresolved 23.2/23.6 nm spectral lines from the germanium collisional X-ray laser. The model derives from measurements of the visibility of Young slit interference fringes determined by a method based on the Wiener-Khinchin theorem. Output from amplifiers comprising three and four target elements have similar coherence properties in directions within the horizontal plane corresponding to strong plasma refraction effects and fitting the coherence data shows source dimensions (FWHM) are similar to 26 mu m (horizontal), significantly smaller than expected by direct imaging, and similar to 125 mu m (vertical: equivalent to the height of the driver excitation).
