Time-resolved fluorescence studies were carried out on a series of free-base and zinc(II) derivatives of meso-tetraphenylporphyrins covalently linked to either 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) or 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB) acceptor units. These acceptor units were linked at different sites (at the ortho, meta or para positions of one of the phenyl groups of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin) to the donor porphyrins such that the resulting isomeric intramolecular donor-acceptor complexes exhibit different centre-to-centre (ctc) distances and relative orientations. Biexponential fluorescence decay profiles observed for several of these covalently linked complexes were rationalized in terms of the presence of ''closed'' and ''extended'' conformers. Detailed analyses of the fluorescence decay data have provided a comprehensive understanding of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions occurring in systems containing zinc(II) porphyrin donors. It is observed that although DNB-linked zinc(II) complexes follow the trends predicted for the efficiency of PET with respect to donor-acceptor distance, the TNB-linked zinc(II) porphyrins exhibit a behaviour which is dictated by steric effects. Similarly, although the thermodynamic criteria predict a greater efficiency of charge separation in TNB-linked complexes compared with DNB-linked complexes, the reverse trend observed has been attributed to orientational effects. In the complexes containing free-base porphyrin donors, PET is expected to be less efficient from a thermodynamic viewpoint. In a few of these cases, fluorescence quenching seems to occur by parallel mechanisms other than PET.

We report Raman studies on powder samples of the charge transfer complex (TTF)(x)C60Br8 at room temperature. The phonons show considerable softening with respect to the frequencies observed in the Raman spectrum of solid C60Br8. The strongest mode at 1464 cm(-1) in C60Br8 is red shifted to a doublet with peaks at 1414 and 1421 cm(-1), implying an average phonon softening Delta omega of -47 cm(-1). A comparison with the phonon softening of the corresponding A(g)(2) mode in alkali-doped C-60 (Delta omega similar to -36 cm(-1) for A(6)C(60), A = K, Rb or Cs) suggests that 8 electrons are transferred per C60Br8 molecule in the charge transfer complex. The mode at 503 cm(-1) in C60Br8 is shifted upwards, similar to that in A(6)C(60) compounds.

N,N'-Bis(ferrocenylmethylidene)-p-phenylenediamine 1 and N-(ferrocenylmethylidene) aniline 2 are readily synthesized by Schiff base condensation of appropriate units. Iodine (I-2), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (CA), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) form charge transfer complexes with 1 and 2. IR spectroscopy suggests an increase in the amount of charge transferred from the ferrocenyl ring to the oxidant in the order, I-2 < CA < TCNQ < TCNE approximate to DDQ. EPR spectra of the oxidized binuclear complexes are indicative of localized species containing iron- and carbon-centered radicals. The Mossbauer spectrum of the iodine oxidized complex of 1 reveals the presence of both Fe(III) and Fe(II) centers. Variable temperature magnetic and Mossbauer studies show that the ratio of Fe(III)/Fe(II) centers varies as a function of temperature. The larger Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio at lower temperatures is best explained by a retro charge transfer from the iodide to the iron(III) metal center. There is negligible solvent effect on the formation of the iodine oxidized charge transfer complex of 1. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations have been carried out to explore the effects of the orientational motion of the donor-acceptor (D-A) chromophore pair on the Forster energy transfer between the D-A pair embedded in a polymer chain in solution. It is found that the usually employed orientational averaging (that is, replacing the orientational factor, kappa, by kappa (2) = 2/3) may lead to an error in the estimation of the rate of the reaction by about 20%. In the limit of slow orientational relaxation, the preaveraging of the orientational factor leads to an overestimation of the rate, while in the opposite limit of very fast orientational relaxation, the usual scheme underestimates the rate. The latter results from an interesting interplay between reaction and diffusion. On the other hand, when one of the chromophores is fixed, the preaveraged rate is found to be fairly reliable if the rotational relaxation of the chromophore is sufficiently fast. The present study also reveals a power law dependence of the FRET rate on the chain length (rate proportional to N- alpha, with alpha approximate to 2.6).

Joint experimental and theoretical work is presented on two quadrupolar D-pi-A-pi-D chromophores characterized by the same bulky donor (D) group and two different central cores. The first chromophore, a newly synthesized species with a malononitrile-based acceptor (A) group, has a V-shaped structure that makes its absorption spectrum very broad, covering most of the visible region. The second chromophore has a squaraine-based core and therefore a linear structure, as also evinced from its absorption spectra. Both chromophores show an anomalous red shift of the absorption band upon increasing solvent polarity, a feature that is ascribed to the large, bulky structure of the moleCules. For these molecules, the basic description of polar solvation in terms of a uniform reaction field fails. Indeed, a simple extension of the model to account for two independent reaction fields associated with the two molecular arms quantitatively reproduces the observed linear absorption and fluorescence as well as fluorescence anisotropy spectra, fully rationalizing their nontrivial dependence on solvent polarity. The model derived from the analysis of linear spectra is adopted to predict nonlinear spectra and specifically hyper-Rayleigh scattering and two-photon absorption spectra. In polar solvents, the V-shaped chromophore is predicted to have a large HRS response in a wide spectral region (approximately 600-1300 nm). Anomalously large and largely solvent-dependent HRS responses for the linear chromophores are ascribed to symmetry lowering induced by polar solvation and amplified in this bulky system by the presence of two reaction fields.

The availability of a reliable bound on an integral involving the square of the modulus of a form factor on the unitarity cut allows one to constrain the form factor at points inside the analyticity domain and its shape parameters, and also to isolate domains on the real axis and in the complex energy plane where zeros are excluded. In this lecture note, we review the mathematical techniques of this formalism in its standard form, known as the method of unitarity bounds, and recent developments which allow us to include information on the phase and modulus along a part of the unitarity cut. We also provide a brief summary of some results that we have obtained in the recent past, which demonstrate the usefulness of the method for precision predictions on the form factors.

In programmed -1 ribosomal frameshift, an RNA pseudoknot stalls the ribosome at specific sequence and restarts translation in a new reading frame. A precise understanding of structural characteristics of these pseudoknots and their PRF inducing ability has not been clear to date. To investigate this phenomenon, we have studied various structural aspects of a -1 PRF inducing RNA pseudoknot from BWYV using extensive molecular dynamics simulations. A set of functional and poorly functional forms, for which previous mutational data were available, were chosen for analysis. These structures differ from each other by either single base substitutions or base-pair replacements from the native structure. We have rationalized how certain mutations in RNA pseudoknot affect its function; e.g., a specific base substitution in loop 2 stabilizes the junction geometry by forming multiple noncanonical hydrogen bonds, leading to a highly rigid structure that could effectively resist ribosome-induced unfolding, thereby increasing efficiency. While, a CG to AU pair substitution in stem 1 leads to loss of noncanonical hydrogen bonds between stems and loop, resulting in a less stable structure and reduced PRF inducing ability, inversion of a pair in stem 2 alters specific base-pair geometry that might be required in ribosomal recognition of nucleobase groups, negatively affecting pseudoknot functioning. These observations illustrate that the ability of an RNA pseudoknot to induce -1 PRF with an optimal rate depends on several independent factors that contribute to either the local conformational variability or geometry

Solder joints in electronic packages undergo thermo-mechanical cycling, resulting in nucleation of micro-cracks, especially at the solder/bond-pad interface, which may lead to fracture of the joints. The fracture toughness of a solder joint depends on material properties, process conditions and service history, as well as strain rate and mode-mixity. This paper reports on a methodology for determining the mixed-mode fracture toughness of solder joints with an interfacial starter-crack, using a modified compact mixed mode (CMM) specimen containing an adhesive joint. Expressions for stress intensity factor (K) and strain energy release rate (G) are developed, using a combination of experiments and finite element (FE) analysis. In this methodology, crack length dependent geometry factors to convert for the modified CMM sample are first obtained via the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD)-based linear extrapolation method to calculate the under far-field mode I and II conditions (f(1a) and f(2a)), (ii) generation of a master-plot to determine a(c), and (iii) computation of K and G to analyze the fracture behavior of joints. The developed methodology was verified using J-integral calculations, and was also used to calculate experimental fracture toughness values of a few lead-free solder-Cu joints. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The inversion of canopy reflectance models is widely used for the retrieval of vegetation properties from remote sensing. This study evaluates the retrieval of soybean biophysical variables of leaf area index, leaf chlorophyll content, canopy chlorophyll content, and equivalent leaf water thickness from proximal reflectance data integrated broadbands corresponding to moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer, thematic mapper, and linear imaging self scanning sensors through inversion of the canopy radiative transfer model, PROSAIL. Three different inversion approaches namely the look-up table, genetic algorithm, and artificial neural network were used and performances were evaluated. Application of the genetic algorithm for crop parameter retrieval is a new attempt among the variety of optimization problems in remote sensing which have been successfully demonstrated in the present study. Its performance was as good as that of the look-up table approach and the artificial neural network was a poor performer. The general order of estimation accuracy for para-meters irrespective of inversion approaches was leaf area index > canopy chlorophyll content > leaf chlorophyll content > equivalent leaf water thickness. Performance of inversion was comparable for broadband reflectances of all three sensors in the optical region with insignificant differences in estimation accuracy among them.

Teeth were taken from 120 bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, which had stranded on the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. The number of annual growth layer groups (GLGs) for each animal was used to construct a growth curve. The growth rate of coastal North Atlantic Ocean Tursiops is similar to other cetaceans in having a high initial rate of growth, with no differences in growth between females and males. In females, the first dentinal GLG is thickest and is followed by GLGs which become progressively narrower. In males, the second GLG is thicker than the first; GLGs beyond number two become progressively smaller but at a slower rate than in females. In males and females, the translucent layer makes up proportionally larger parts of the GLG as the animal ages, but in males the percent translucent layer remains constant at about 50% while in females it continues to increase up to about 70% of the GLG. These two factors, GLGs width and translucent layer width, indicate that the sex and age of the animal influence the deposition of GLGs. Incremental layers are also present, averaging 12 per GLG, and seem similar to incremental layers described in other marine mammals. A plot of the relationship of percent growth of the last GLG to time of death suggests that the deposition of GLGs is relatively constant, at least during the first half of the year, and that North Atlantic Ocean Tursiops give birth in the fall as well as in the spring. In present study, effect of interfacial heat transfer with ambient gas on the onset of oscillatory convection in a liquid bridge of large Prandtl number on the ground is systematically investigated by the method of linear stability analyses. With both the constant and linear ambient air temperature distributions, the numerical results show that the interfacial heat transfer modifies the free-surface temperature distribution directly and then induces a steeper temperature gradient on the middle part of the free surface, which may destabilize the convection. On the other hand, the interfacial heat transfer restrains the temperature disturbances on the free surface, which may stabilize the convection. The two coupling effects result in a complex dependence of the stability property on the Biot number. Effects of melt free-surface deformation on the critical conditions of the oscillatory convection were also investigated. Moreover, to better understand the mechanism of the instabilities, rates of kinetic energy change and "thermal" energy change of the critical disturbances were investigated (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
