An Environmental Management Experience Within the Project: Improvement of Educational Opportunities in Rural Environmental Management in Sarapiqui and Guapiles’ Schools

A very important aspect of worldwide education and, particularly for Costa Rican education, is the environmental management as an educational strategy. For this reason, this article describes the experience of the project Mejora de la Oferta Educativa en Gestión Ambiental Rural (MOE-GAR) during its first stage in 2009. The population was comprised by teachers from different areas of the rural school districts of Guapiles and Sarapiquí. As a part of this project, we worked with teachers, different government and nongovernment institutions, throughout the 2009 school year; obtaining as a result, a process of knowledge development in environmental management. Based on this, several proposals were developed in different educational institutions.

Fleet Management System for Search and Rescue Operations

Over one million people lost their lives in the last twenty years from natural disasters like wildfires, earthquakes and man-made disasters. In such scenarios the usage of a fleet of robots aims at the parallelization of the workload and thus increasing speed and capabilities to complete time sensitive missions. This work focuses on the development of a dynamic fleet management system, which consists in the management of multiple agents cooperating in order to accomplish tasks. We presented a Mixed Integer Programming problem for the management and planning of mission’s tasks. The problem was solved using both an exact and a heuristic approach. The latter is based on the idea of solving iteratively smaller instances of the complete problem. Alongside, a fast and efficient algorithm for estimation of travel times between tasks is proposed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed heuristic approach is able to generate quality solutions, within specific time limits, compared to the exact one.

Applicazione della norma UNI EN ISO 14001 nell’ambito delle attività di bonifica del suolo: un caso di studio

Il dibattito sulla questione ambientale, ormai in continua crescita da decenni, sta conducendo ad un incremento di interesse da parte della società in merito allo sviluppo sostenibile, il quale riguarda, in modo interconnesso, l’ambito ambientale, economico e sociale. Nascono in questa ottica le certificazioni ambientali, attestati nei quali viene certificato l’impegno di un’organizzazione per la tutela dell’ambiente. L’azienda, che su base volontaria decide di ottenere la certificazione, è obbligata a dotarsi di un Sistema di Gestione Ambientale, il quale deve essere verificato da parte di un ente accreditato. La norma ISO14001 in particolare stabilisce i criteri da rispettare per l'attuazione di un efficace Sistema di Gestione Ambientale. Il presente lavoro di tesi è stato sviluppato durante un tirocinio svolto presso un’azienda operante nel settore delle bonifiche del suolo, sottosuolo ed acque sotterranee, con sede a Bologna. Lo scopo di questo elaborato è quello di applicare i requisiti della norma UNI EN ISO14001 nell’ambito di tale attività di bonifica per il controllo degli impatti ambientali. In particolare, la prima parte del tirocinio è stata dedicata all’aggiornamento ed all’ottimizzazione del Sistema di Gestione Ambientale implementato dalla società per il calcolo degli impatti ambientali delle attività aziendali, in particolare di caratterizzazione e bonifica ambientale. Successivamente l’attenzione è stata posta ad un caso di studio attualmente gestito dalla società per valutare possibili miglioramenti, dal punto di vista ambientale, degli impatti generati dalle attività di bonifica applicate al sito. Lo strumento utilizzato per questa analisi è l’applicativo “Spreadsheets for Environmental Footprint Analysis” (SEFA), sviluppato da US EPA nel 2012.

Exploratory research: Citizen participation, local government and sustainable development in Australia

Exploratory research reported in this paper was undertaken in Adelaide, Australia during 1998/99. The purpose of the research is to explore local development practice as evidenced through the experiences and actions of local citizens, community based groups and local government (Neuman, 1994). Results from this first stage research suggest that sustainability initiatives in Australia might best be implemented through a collaborative approach at the local community level involving local citizens working in partnership with local government.
