The purpose of this study was to examine the development of six leader-athletes. In-depth qualitative interviews were used to explore the various activities that leader athletes engaged in from an early age as well as the roles and influences that peers, coaches, and parents played within these activities. Results indicated that leadership development in sport focused on developing four central components: high skill, strong work ethic, enriched cognitive sport knowledge, and good rapport with people. The types of activities engaged in throughout development as well as receiving feedback, acknowledgement, support, cognitive engagement, mature conversations with adults, and physical encounters with older peers are important social influences that can play an instrumental role in the formation of these four central tenets.

The newborns of mammals have a high folate demand, yet obtain adequate folate nutrition solely from their mothers' milk despite its low folate content. Milk folate is entirely bound by an excess of folate-binding protein (FBP), prompting speculation that FBP may affect the bioavailability of the limited folate supply. Previous research has shown that FBP-bound folic acid is more gradually absorbed, thereby reducing the peak plasma folate concentration and preventing loss into the urine. Natural folates are reduced derivatives of folic acid, with milk predominantly containing 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, yet little research has been carried out to determine the role of FBP in the bioavailability of reduced folates. We studied the effect of FBP on folate nutrition of rats in both single-dose and 4-wk feeding experiments. The effect of FBP was influenced by the presence of other milk components. FBP increased bioavailability of dietary folate when it was consumed with other whey proteins or with soluble casein. However, in the presence of acid-precipitated casein or a whey preparation enriched in lipids, bioavailability was decreased. These results highlight the difficulties of extrapolating from experimental results obtained using purified diets alone and of studying interactions among dietary components. They suggest that the addition of FBP-rich foods to folate-rich foods could enhance the bioavailability of natural folates, but that the outcome of such a combination would depend on interactions with other components of the diet.

Two laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in alternating anaerobic-aerobic or alternating anaerobic-anoxic modes, respectively. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) were enriched in the anaerobic-aerobic SBR and denitrifying PAOs (DPAOs) were enriched in the anaerobic-aerobic SBR. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) demonstrated that the well-known PAO, Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis was abundant in both SBRs, and post-FISH chemical staining with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (DAPI) confirmed that they accumulated polyphosphate. When the anaerobic-anoxic SBR enriched for DPAOs was converted to anaerobic-aerobic operation, aerobic uptake of phosphorus by the resident microbial community occurred immediately. However, when the anaerobic-aerobic SBR enriched for PAOs was exposed to one cycle with anoxic rather than aerobic conditions, a 5-h lag period elapsed before phosphorus uptake proceeded. This anoxic phosphorus-uptake lag phase was not observed in the subsequent anaerobic-aerobic cycle. These results demonstrate that the PAOs that dominated the anaerobic-aerobic SBR biomass were the same organisms as the DPAOs enriched under anaerobic-anoxic conditions. An increasing number of studies shows that the glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) can survive and may indeed proliferate under the alternating anaerobic/aerobic conditions found in EBPR systems, thus forming a strong competitor of the polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs). Understanding their behaviors in a mixed PAO and GAO culture under various operational conditions is essential for developing operating strategies that disadvantage the growth of this group of unwanted organisms. A model-based data analysis method is developed in this paper for the study of the anaerobic PAO and GAO activities in a mixed PAO and GAO culture. The method primarily makes use of the hydrogen ion production rate and the carbon dioxide transfer rate resulting from the acetate uptake processes by PAOs and GAOs, measured with a recently developed titration and off-gas analysis (TOGA) sensor. The method is demonstrated using the data from a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated under alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The data analysis using the proposed method strongly indicates a coexistence of PAOs and GAOs in the system, which was independently confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) measurement. The model-based analysis also allowed the identification of the respective acetate uptake rates by PAOs and GAOs, along with a number of kinetic and stoichiometric parameters involved in the PAO and GAO models. The excellent fit between the model predictions and the experimental data not involved in parameter identification shows that the parameter values found are reliable and accurate. It also demonstrates that the current anaerobic PAO and GAO models are able to accurately characterize the PAO/GAO mixed culture obtained in this study. This is of major importance as no pure culture of either PAOs or GAOs has been reported to date, and hence the current PAO and GAO models were developed for the interpretation of experimental results of mixed cultures. The proposed method is readily applicable for detailed investigations of the competition between PAOs and GAOs in enriched cultures. However, the fermentation of organic substrates carried out by ordinary heterotrophs needs to be accounted for when the method is applied to the study of PAO and GAO competition in full-scale sludges. This investigation aimed to elucidate the relative roles of putative brevetoxins, reactive oxygen species and free fatty acids as the toxic principle of the raphidophyte Chattonella marina, using damselfish as the bioassay. Our investigations on Australian C. marina demonstrated an absence or only very low concentrations of brevetoxin-like compounds by radio-receptor binding assay and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy techniques. Chattonella is unique in its ability to produce levels of reactive oxygen species 100 times higher than most other algal species. However, high levels of superoxide on their own were found not to cause fish mortalities. Lipid analysis revealed this raphidophyte to contain high concentrations of the polyunsaturated fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 18-23% of fatty acids), which has demonstrated toxic properties to marine organisms. Using damselfish as a model organism, we demonstrated that the free fatty acid (FFA) form of EPA produced a mortality and fish behavioural response similar to fish exposed to C. marina cells. This effect was not apparent when fish were exposed to other lipid fractions including a triglyceride containing fish oil, docosahexaenoate-enriched ethyl ester, or pure brevetoxin standards. The presence of superoxide together with low concentrations of EPA accelerated fish mortality rate threefold. We conclude that the enhancement of ichthyotoxicity of EPA in the presence of superoxide can account for the high C. marina fish killing potential. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Mental retardation in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) is thought to result from anomalous development and function of the brain; however, the underlying neuropathological processes have yet to be determined. Early implementation of special care programs result in limited, and temporary, cognitive improvements in DS individuals. In the present study, we investigated the possible neural correlates of these limited improvements. More specifically, we studied cortical pyramidal cells in the frontal cortex of Ts65Dn mice, a partial trisomy of murine chromosome 16 (MMU16) model characterized by cognitive deficits, hyperactivity, behavioral disruption and reduced attention levels similar to those observed in DS, and their control littermates. Animals were raised either in a standard or in an enriched environment. Environmental enrichment had a marked effect on pyramidal cell structure in control animals. Pyramidal cells in environmentally enriched control animals were significantly more branched and more spinous than non-enriched controls. However, environmental enrichment had little effect on pyramidal cell structure in Ts65Dn mice. As each dendritic spine receives at least one excitatory input, differences in the number of spines found in the dendritic arbors of pyramidal cells in the two groups reflect differences in the number of excitatory inputs they receive and, consequently, complexity in cortical circuitry. The present results suggest that behavioral deficits demonstrated in the Ts65Dn model could be attributed to abnormal circuit development.

Os iogurtes simbióticos, que combinam microrganismos probióticos e substâncias prebióticas, adicionados de polpa de frutas são uma tendência crescente no mercado. O fruto açaí (Euterpe edulis) se destaca pela presença de compostos bioativos, como as antocianinas. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar e avaliar os parâmetros físico-químicos e a viabilidade microbiológica de iogurte simbiótico de açaí enriquecido com inulina e adicionado de cultura probiótica de Bifidobacterium animallis subsp. lactis BB-12. As formulações de iogurte atenderam aos requisitos físico-químicos exigidos pela IN no 46/2007 do MAPA apresentando teor de cinzas de 0,86 % ± 0,10, extrato seco total de 23,18 % ± 2,59, teor de gordura de 4,16 % ± 0,31, acidez de 0,70 % ± 0,05 e pH de 4,45 ± 0,10. Entre as formulações o conteúdo fenólico total variou de 18,17 a 117,84 mg de AGE/100 g, teor de antocianinas de 1,92 a 47,88 mg/100 g e atividade antioxidante de 0,71 a 6,95 μmol Trolox/g, observando-se um aumento de acordo com o aumento do teor de polpa de açaí adicionada. Ao final de 28 dias de armazenamento a 5 °C, observou-se uma redução no teor de antocianinas e da atividade antioxidante. Verificou-se a contribuição positiva da polpa de açaí na viabilidade das bactérias láticas totais, cujas contagens variaram de 4,56 a 7,04 log UFC.g-1 e de B. lactis BB-12 que variou de 3,17 a 6,34 log UFC.g-1, favorecendo a multiplicação dessas bactérias nos iogurtes. Nas formulações com 20 e 25 % de polpa de açaí as contagens das bactérias láticas totais e probiótica mantiveram-se viáveis de acordo com a IN no 46/2007 do MAPA e a Lista de Alegação de Propriedade Funcional (Anvisa), durante os 28 dias de armazenamento a 5 oC. Concluiu-se que a adição de polpa de açaí E. edulis, inulina e B. lactis BB-12 foi tecnologicamente viável na elaboração de iogurte simbiótico de açaí, sendo uma excelente alternativa de diversificação do produto no mercado.

Interactive systems users still face several challenge. Besides current improvements in usability and intuitiveness users have to adapt to the systems proposed to satisfy their needs. For instance, they must learn how to achieve tasks, how to interact with the system, etc. This paper proposes a methodology to improve this situation supporting the use of interactive systems by users. To achieve this goal the approach is based on enriched task models and picture-driven computing. An example based on a text editor illustrates the approach.

Nowadays despite improvements in usability and intuitiveness users have to adapt to the proposed systems to satisfy their needs. For instance, they must learn how to achieve tasks, how to interact with the system, and fulfill system's specifications. This paper proposes an approach to improve this situation enabling graphical user interface redefinition through virtualization and computer vision with the aim of increasing the system's usability. To achieve this goal the approach is based on enriched task models, virtualization and picture-driven computing.

The real Cloud and Ubiquitous Manufacturing systems require effectiveness and permanent availability of resources, their capacity and scalability. One of the most important problems for applications management over cloud based platforms, which are expected to support efficient scalability and resources coordination following SaaS implementation model, is their interoperability. Even application dashboards need to easily incorporate those new applications, their interoperability still remains a big problem to override. So, the possibility to expand these dashboards with efficiently integrated communicational cloud based services (cloudlets) represents a relevant added value as well as contributes to solving the interoperability problem. Following the architecture for integration of enriched existing cloud services, as instances of manufacturing resources, this paper: a) proposes a cloud based web platform to support dashboard integrating communicational services, and b) describe an experimentation to sustain the theory that the effective and efficient interoperability, especially in dynamic environments, could be achieved only with human intervention.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the dynamics of decomposition process of chopped secondary forest system, previously enriched with legumes Inga velutina Willd. and Stryphnodendron pulcherrimum (Willd.) Hochr. and the contribution of this process to the nutrient input to the cultivation of corn and bean under no-tillage. The experimental design was a randomized block, split plot with four replications. The plots were two species (I. velutina and S. pulcherrimum) and the subplots were seven times of evaluation (0, 7, 28, 63, 189, 252, 294 days after experiment installation). There was no difference (p ≥ 0.05) between the secondary forest systems enriched and no interaction with times for biomass waste, decomposition constant and half-life time. The waste of S. pulcherrimum trees had higher (p < 0.05) C/N ratio than that I. velutina. However, this one was higher (p < 0.05) in lignin content. Nevertheless, the dynamics of residue decomposition was similar. The corn yield was higher (p < 0.05) in cultivation under I.velutina waste. Meanwhile, the beans planted after corn, shows similar (p > 0.05) yield in both areas, regardless of the waste origin.

In this study, the results of chemical concentrations inside and outside of a Lisbon (Portugal) traffic tunnel were compared, during one week. They were obtained by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). The tunnel values largely exceed the Air Ambient legislated values and the Pearson Correlations Coefficients point out to soil re-suspension/dispersed road dust (As, Ce, Eu, Hf, Fe, Mo, Sc, Zn), traffic-markers (Ba, Cr), tire wear (Cr, Zn), break wear (Fe, Zn, Ba, Cu, Sb), exhaust and motor oil (Zn) and sea-spray (Br, Na). On all days these elements inside the tunnel were more enriched than outside; significant statistical differences were found for Co (p=0.005), Br (p=0.008), Zn (p=0.01) and Sb (p=0.005), while enrichment factors of As and Sc are statistically identical. The highest values were found for As, Br, Zn and Sb, for both inside and outside the tunnel.

The deficiency of essential micronutrients and excess of toxic metals in cereals, an important food items for human nutrition, can cause public health risk. Therefore, before their consumption and adoption of soil supplementation, concentrations of essential micronutrients and metals in cereals should be monitored. This study collected soil and two varieties of wheat samples–Triticum aestivum L. (Jordão/bread wheat), and Triticum durum L. (Marialva/durum wheat) from Elvas area, Portugal and analyzed concentrations of As, Cr, Co, Fe, K, Na, Rb and Zn using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) to focus on the risk of adverse public health issues. The low variability and moderate concentrations of metals in soils indicated a lower significant effect of environmental input on metal concentrations in agricultural soils. The Cr and Fe concentrations in soils that ranged from 93–117 and 26,400–31,300 mg/kg, respectively, were relatively high, but Zn concentration was very low (below detection limit <22 mg/kg) indicating that soils should be supplemented with Zn during cultivation. The concentrations of metals in roots and straw of both varieties of wheat decreased in the order of K>Fe>Na>Zn>Cr>Rb>As>Co. Concentrations of As, Co and Cr in root, straw and spike of both varieties were higher than the permissible limits with exception of a few samples. The concentrations of Zn in root, straw and spike were relatively low (4–30 mg/kg) indicating the deficiency of an essential micronutrient Zn in wheat cultivated in Portugal. The elemental transfer from soil to plant decreases with increasing growth of the plant. The concentrations of various metals in different parts of wheat followed the order: Root>Straw>Spike. A few root, straw and spike samples showed enrichment of metals, but the majority of the samples showed no enrichment. Potassium is enriched in all samples of root, straw and spike for both varieties of wheat. Relatively to the seed used for cultivation, Jordão presented higher transfer coefficients than Marialva, in particular for Co, Fe, and Na. The Jordão and Marialva cultivars accumulated not statistically significant different concentrations of different metals. The advantages of using INAA are the multielementality, low detection limits and use of solid samples (no need of digestion).

New K/Ar dating and geochemical analyses have been carried out on the WNW-ESE elongated oceanic island of S. Jorge to reconstruct the volcanic evolution of a linear ridge developed close to the Azores triple junction. We show that S. Jorge sub-aerial construction encompasses the last 1.3 Myr, a time interval far much longer than previously reported. The early development of the ridge involved a sub-aerial building phase exposed in the southeast end of the island and now constrained between 1.32 +/- 0.02 and 1.21 +/- 0.02 Ma. Basic lavas from this older stage are alkaline and enriched in incompatible elements, reflecting partial melting of an enriched mantle source. At least three differentiation cycles from alkaline basalts to mugearites are documented within this stage. The successive episodes of magma rising, storage and evolution suggest an intermittent reopening of the magma feeding system, possibly due to recurrent tensional or trans-tensional tectonic events. Present data show a gap in sub-aerial volcanism before a second main ongoing building phase starting at about 750 ka. Sub-aerial construction of the S. Jorge ridge migrated progressively towards the west, but involved several overlapping volcanic episodes constrained along the main WNW-ESE structural axis of the island. Malic magmas erupted during the second phase have been also generated by partial melting of an enriched mantle source. Trace element data suggest, however, variable and lower degrees of partial melting of a shallower mantle domain, which is interpreted as an increasing control of lithospheric deformation on the genesis and extraction of primitive melts during the last 750 kyr. The multi-stage development of the S. Jorge volcanic ridge over the last 1.3 Myr has most likely been greatly influenced by regional tectonics, controlled by deformation along the diffuse boundary between the Nubian and the Eurasian plates, and the increasing effect of sea-floor spreading at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

O ferro é encontrado em praticamente todos os seres vivos, sendo um cofator para proteínas que desempenham funções essenciais à vida. Nos mamíferos, a maioria do ferro está incorporada na hemoglobina ou armazenado no fígado, ligado à ferritina. É absorvido pelos enterócitos, sendo a principal forma de controlo dos seus níveis. A sobrecarga de ferro pode levar a hemocromatose, podendo ser tóxica para vários órgãos. O fator de transcrição Nrf2 é importante na ativação de genes citoprotetores em situações de stress oxidativo/eletrofílico, colocando-se a hipótese de que poderá estar envolvido na resposta à progressão de doença devido à sobrecarga de ferro. Com o objetivo de determinar se a via do Nrf2 representa uma proteção contra a toxicidade do ferro a nível hepático, foram realizadas duas experiências nas quais murganhos C57BL/6 (B6) e Nrf2-/- machos foram alimentados com dieta standard ou com dieta enriquecida em ferro carbonilo (FeC) (0,5% ou 2,0%). Os resultados demonstram sobrecarga de ferro nos animais que receberam dieta enriquecida, sendo que os que receberam FeC 2,0% apresentaram níveis mais elevados de ferro hepático e sérico, bem como da saturação da transferrina. Os murganhos Nrf2-/- são mais suscetíveis a esta acumulação, mostrando evidências patológicas mais graves, nomeadamente necrose hepatocítica e infiltração de células inflamatórias. A deleção do Nrf2 associado a uma dieta suplementada com FeC 2,0% parece não ser suficiente para o desenvolvimento de fibrose hepática. O estudo da expressão de genes e proteínas do metabolismo do ferro mostrou que os animais B6 e Nrf2-/- são igualmente capazes de responder à sobrecarga de ferro, sugerindo que a sua diferente suscetibilidade à toxicidade do ferro não se deverá a uma regulação ineficiente da homeostasia do Fe. A dieta com FeC 2,0% aumentou a expressão de dois genes alvo do Nrf2, Nqo1 e Gsta1, o que não se verificou com os genes e proteínas GCLC e GCLM. A expressão de genes pró-inflamatórios não mostrou evidências de inflamação nestes animais. Foi demonstrado que os animais Nrf2-/- são mais suscetíveis à toxicidade do ferro, concluindo-se que a via do Nrf2 é ativada em resposta a uma dieta contendo quantidades excessivas de FeC e que confere proteção contra a acumulação de ferro em murganhos B6.
