A synaptic plane rendered by an array of smart pixels was described regarding its application as a complementary component for neural network implementation. The smart spatial light modulator featured auto-modification abilities. Thus, an optical system incorporating this device can show self-reliant optical learning. Furthermore, the optical system design, in the area of its optical interconnection scheme, is highly flexible since the independent weight-plane pixels eliminated the difficulty between weight update calculation and weight representation.

Monolithic multisection mode-locked semiconductor lasers with an integrated distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) have recently been demonstrated to generate stable picosecond pulses at high repetition rates suitable for optical communication systems. However, there has been very little theoretical work on understanding the physical mechanisms of the device and on optimisation of the absorber modulator design. This article presents numerical modeling of the loss modulated mode-locking process in these lasers. The model predicts most aspects experimentally observed within this type of device, and the results show the output waveform, optical spectrum, instantaneous frequency chirp, and stable operating range.

Reliability of the measuring devices is very important problem. Optical fibre sensors are very efficient. The use of optical fibre sensors for monitoring the physical and chemical parameters has been expanding over resent years. These sensors are applied for monitoring the structural integrity of long, parallel lay synthetic ropes. Such ropes are corrosion free, however, their operational lifetime under cyclic load is not well understood and premature failure can occur due to slippage and breakage of yarns within the rope. The monitoring system has been proposed which is based on acoustic detection of yarn breakage. Monitoring the strain and temperature is performed using the array of fibre gratings distributed along the rope length.

This paper describes the use of fibre optic sensing with Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) for near-continuous (distributed) strain monitoring of a large diameter pipeline, buried in predominantly granular material, subjected to a pipe jack tunnelling operation in London Clay. The pipeline, buried at shallow depth, comprises 4.6 m long sections connected with standard bell and spigot type joints, which connect to a continuous steel pipeline. In this paper the suitability of fibre optic sensing with BOTDR for monitoring pipeline behaviour is illustrated. The ability of the fibre optic sensor to detect local strain changes at joints and the subsequent impact on the overall strain profile is shown. The BOTDR strain profile was also used to infer pipe settlement through a process of double-integration and was compared to pipe settlement measurements. The close approximation of the measured pipe settlement provides further confidence in fibre optic strain sensing with BOTDR to investigate the intricacies of pipeline behaviour, pipe-soil interaction and interaction between pipe sections when subjected to ground movement. This paper presents the application of advanced compact models of the IGBT and PIN diode to the full electrothermal system simulation of a hybrid electric vehicle converter using a look-up table of device losses. The Fourier-based solution model is used, which takes account of features such as local lifetime control and field-stop technology. Device and circuit parameters are extracted from experimental waveforms and device structural data. Matching of the switching waveforms and the resulting generation of the look-up table is presented. An example of the use of the look-up tables in simulation of inverter device temperatures is also given, for a hypothetical electric vehicle subjected to an urban driving cycle. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper reports on a switchable multi-band filter response achieved within a single micro-electro-mechanical device. A prototype device fabricated in a SOI process demonstrates a voltage programmable and tunable, dual-band, band-pass/band-stop response. Both analytical and finite element models are introduced in this paper to elucidate the operating principle of the filter and to guide filter design. Voltage programmability of the filter characteristic is demonstrated with the ability to independently tune the centre frequency and bandwidth for each band. A representative measurement shows that the minimum 3 dB-bandwidth (BW) is 155 Hz, 140Hz, and 20 dB-BW is 216 Hz, 203Hz for the upper-band and lower-band center frequencies located at 131.5 kHz and 130.7 kHz, respectively. © 2011 IEEE.

High voltage pulsed current produced on board a trawler is fed to electrodes distributed along the foot rope of a trawl net through two core TRS cable which builds up a homogeneous electrical field around the net mouth. By comparative fishing tests with the electrified and non-electrified 32 m long wing trawl net, the increase in total catch of shrimps and fishes was found to be 19.8 and 36%, respectively.
