As an estimate of plant-available N, this data set contains measurements of inorganic nitrogen (NO3-N and NH4-N, the sum of which is termed mineral N or Nmin) determined by extraction with 1 M KCl solution of soil samples from the main experiment plots of a large grassland biodiversity experiment (the Jena Experiment; see further details below). In the main experiment, 82 grassland plots of 20 x 20 m were established from a pool of 60 species belonging to four functional groups (grasses, legumes, tall and small herbs). In May 2002, varying numbers of plant species from this species pool were sown into the plots to create a gradient of plant species richness (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 60 species) and functional richness (1, 2, 3, 4 functional groups). Plots were maintained by bi-annual weeding and mowing. Soil sampling and analysis: Five soil cores (diameter 0.01 m) were taken at a depth of 0 to 0.15 m and 0.15 to 0.3 m of the mineral soil from each of the experimental plots in March, June, and October 2003. Samples of the soil cores per plot were pooled during each sampling campaign. NO3-N and NH4-N concentrations were determined by extraction of soil samples with 1 M KCl solution and were measured in the soil extract with a Continuous Flow Analyzer (CFA, Skalar, Breda, Netherlands).

A detailed study of a nodule from the Somali Basin dated by 230Thexcess was correlated with the paleoceanographic events recorded in Site 236 (Leg 24) Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) cores. Tentative indications are that the phase of nodule accretion starting with the development of pillar structure at a depth of 20 mm in the nodule around 13 Ma coincides with increased Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) flow and an elevated calciumcarbonate compensation depth (CCD). The Late Miocene lowering of the CCD is represented by the mottled zones between 8 and 18 mm in the nodule is characterised by an abundant silicate component (>20%) of aeolian origin. The Miocene/Pliocene boundary (5 Ma) occurs at a depth of about 8 mm and is represented by the development of pillar structure and a minimum of aeolian dust (10.3%). The increased biological productivity of the Somali surface water since the Middle Miocene is demonstrated by the increasing Corg content of the nodule (from 0.11 to 0.19%) towards its surface.

The interaction between fluid seepage, bottom water redox, and chemosynthetic communities was studied at cold seeps across one of the world's largest oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) located at the Makran convergent continental margin. Push cores were obtained from seeps within and below the core-OMZ with a remotely operated vehicle. Extracted sediment pore water was analyzed for sulfide and sulfate concentrations. Depending on oxygen availability in the bottom water, seeps were either colonized by microbial mats or by mats and macrofauna. The latter, including ampharetid polychaetes and vesicomyid clams, occurred in distinct benthic habitats, which were arranged in a concentric fashion around gas orifices. At most sites colonized by microbial mats, hydrogen sulfide was exported into the bottom water. Where macrofauna was widely abundant, hydrogen sulfide was retained within the sediment. Numerical modeling of pore water profiles was performed in order to assess rates of fluid advection and bioirrigation. While the magnitude of upward fluid flow decreased from 11 cm yr**-1 to <1 cm yr**-1 and the sulfate/methane transition (SMT) deepened with increasing distance from the central gas orifice, the fluxes of sulfate into the SMT did not significantly differ (6.6-9.3 mol m**-2 yr**-1). Depth-integrated rates of bioirrigation increased from 120 cm yr**-1 in the central habitat, characterized by microbial mats and sparse macrofauna, to 297 cm yr**-1 in the habitat of large and few small vesicomyid clams. These results reveal that chemosynthetic macrofauna inhabiting the outer seep habitats below the core-OMZ efficiently bioirrigate and thus transport sulfate down into the upper 10 to 15 cm of the sediment. In this way the animals deal with the lower upward flux of methane in outer habitats by stimulating rates of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) with sulfate high enough to provide hydrogen sulfide for chemosynthesis. Through bioirrigation, macrofauna engineer their geochemical environment and fuel upward sulfide flux via AOM. Furthermore, due to the introduction of oxygenated bottom water into the sediment via bioirrigation, the depth of the sulfide sink gradually deepens towards outer habitats. We therefore suggest that - in addition to the oxygen levels in the water column, which determine whether macrofaunal communities can develop or not - it is the depth of the SMT and thus of sulfide production that determines which chemosynthetic communities are able to exploit the sulfide at depth. We hypothesize that large vesicomyid clams, by efficiently expanding the sulfate zone down into the sediment, could cut off smaller or less mobile organisms, as e.g. small clams and sulfur bacteria, from the sulfide source.

This paper presents the magnetostratigraphic results from Leg 108 of the Ocean Drilling Program. Measurements made with the shipboard "pass-through" cryogenic magnetometer on whole cores and archive halves are combined with those made on discrete samples; these measurements constitute the paleomagnetic data base for the Leg 108 cores. Polarity determination on unoriented, low-latitude cores is somewhat subjective; we rely heavily on the available biostratigraphic data and document our line of reasoning where appropriate. The interpretations presented here, therefore, are compatible with the available biostratigraphic information; they are also in substantial agreement with orientation information where available.

Deep-sea sediments of two cores from the western (TY93-929/P) and the southeastern (MD900963) Arabian Sea were used to study the variations of the Indian monsoon during previous climatic cycles. Core TY93-929/P was located between the SW monsoon driven upwelling centres off Somalia and Oman, which are characterized by large seasonal sea surface temperature (SST) and particle flux changes. By contrast, core MD900963, was situated near the Maldives platform, an equatorial ocean site with a rather small SST seasonality (less than 2°C). For both cores we have reconstructed SST variations by means of the unsaturation ratio of C37 alkenones, which is compared with the delta18O records established on planktonic foraminifera. In general, the SST records follow the delta18O variations, with an SST maximum during oxygen isotope stage 5.5 (the Last Interglacial at about 120-130 kyr) and a broad SST minimum during isotope stage 4 and 3.3 (approximately 40-50 kyr). The SST difference between the Holocene and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is of the order of 2°C. In both cores the SSTs during isotope stage 6 are distinctly higher by 1-2°C than the cold SST minima during the last glacial cycle (LGM and stage 3). To reconstruct qualitatively the past productivity variations for the two cores, we used the concentrations and fluxes of alkenones and organic carbon, together with a productivity index based on coccolith species (Florisphaera profunda relative abundance). Within each core, there is a general agreement between the different palaeoproductivity proxies. In the southeastern Arabian Sea (core MD900963), glacial stages correspond to relatively high productivity, whereas warm interstadials coincide with low productivity. All time series of productivity proxies are dominated by a cyclicity of about 21-23 kyr, which corresponds to the insolation precessional cycle. A hypothesis could be that the NE monsoon winds were stronger during the glacial stages, which induced deepening of the surface mixed layer and injection of nutrients to the euphotic zone. By contrast, the records are more complicated in the upwelling region of the western Arabian Sea (core TY93-929/P). This is partly due to large changes in the sedimentation rates, which were higher during specific periods (isotope stages 6, 5.4, 5.2, 3 and 2). Unlike core MD900963, no simple relationship emerges from the comparison between the delta18O stratigraphy and productivity records. The greater complexity observed for core TY93-929/P could be the result of the superimposition of different patterns of productivity fluctuations for the two monsoon seasons, the SW monsoon being enhanced during interglacial periods, whereas the NE monsoon was increased during glacial intervals. A similar line of reasoning also could help explain the SST records by the superimposition of variations of three components: global atmospheric temperature, and SW and NE monsoon dynamics.

In this MA thesis, Finnish learners of English were studied in order to examine the relationship between second language vocabulary size, vocabulary depth, and reading comprehension. In addition, given the well-established connection between vocabulary size and reading comprehension, the second aim of the study was to see whether assessing vocabulary depth could add another dimension in predicting and explaining reading comprehension proficiency. Two groups were studied: the first group consisted of 39 Finnish upper secondary school students (the TOKA group) whereas the second group consisted of 19 university students of English at the University of Turku (the YLI group). Thus, comparisons were made between the results of a less advanced and a very advanced group of English learners, which was the third aim of the study. The participants in both groups filled in a background information form and took three tests: a multiple-choice reading comprehension test, a multiple-choice vocabulary size test, and a test designed to elicit information on learners’ depth of vocabulary knowledge of certain English words. The data were analysed using statistical methods. The results of the study show that the scores on the three tests were positively correlated in both study groups as well as in the two groups together. However, the correlations were higher in the TOKA group and in the two groups in total than in the YLI group. When examining the variance in reading comprehension test scores explained by vocabulary size and vocabulary depth, the figures of explained variance were again higher in the TOKA group and in the two groups in total than in the YLI group. When it comes to the results of the YLI group, vocabulary depth did not indeed seem to add any explained variance into the explanation of reading comprehension test scores. Based on the results of the study, it seems that vocabulary size and depth have a less significant role in the reading comprehension skills of more advanced learners of English. When looking at the less advanced TOKA group, on the other hand, vocabulary size and depth seem to be clear indicators of reading proficiency. In addition, the test results of the YLI group were clearly more uniform than those of the TOKA group. The variance in the test results of the TOKA group was large.

In the literature on philosophical practices, despite the crucial role that argumentation plays in these activities, no specific argumentative theories have ever been proposed to assist the figure of the facilitator in conducting philosophical dialogue and to enhance student’s critical thinking skills. The dissertation starts from a cognitive perspective that challenges the classic Cartesian notion of rationality by focusing on limits and biases of human reasoning. An argumentative model (WRAT – Weak Reasoning Argumentative Theory) is then outlined in order to respond to the needs of philosophical dialogue. After justifying the claim that this learning activity, among other inductive methodologies, is the most suitable for critical thinking education, I inquired into the specific goal of ‘arguing’ within this context by means of the tools provided by Speech Act Theory: the speaker’s intention is to construct new knowledge by questioning her own and other’s beliefs. The model proposed has been theorized on this assumption, starting from which the goals, and, in turn, the related norms, have been pinpointed. In order to include all the epistemic attitudes required to accomplish the complex task of arguing in philosophical dialogue, I needed to integrate two opposed cognitive accounts, Dual Process Theory and Evolutionary Approach, that, although they provide incompatible descriptions of reasoning, can be integrated to provide a normative account of argumentation. The model, apart from offering a theoretical contribution to argumentation studies, is designed to be applied to the Italian educational system, in particular to classes in technical and professional high schools belonging to the newly created network Inventio. This initiative is one of the outcomes of the research project by the same name, which also includes an original Syllabus, research seminars, a monitoring action and publications focused on introducing philosophy, in the form of workshop activities, into technical and professional schools.

Breast weight has great economic importance in poultry industry, and may be associated with other variables. This work aimed to estimate phenotypic correlations between performance (live body weight at 7 and 28 days, and at slaughter, and depth of the breast muscle measured by ultrasonography), carcass (eviscerated body weight and leg weight) and body composition (heart, liver and abdominal fat weight) traits in a broiler line, and quantify the direct and indirect influence of these traits on breast weight. Path analysis was used by expanding the matrix of partial correlation in coefficients which give the direct influence of one trait on another, regardless the effect of the other traits. The simultaneous maintenance of live body weight at slaughter and eviscerated body weight in the matrix of correlations might be harmful for statistical analysis involving systems of normal equations, like path analysis, due to the observed multicollinearity. The live body weight at slaughter and the depth of the breast muscle as measured by ultrasonography directly affected breast weight and were identified as the most responsible factors for the magnitude of the correlation coefficients obtained between the studied traits and breast weight. Individual pre-selection for these traits could favor an increased breast weight in the future reproducer candidates of this line if the broilers' environmental conditions and housing are maintained, since the live body weight at slaughter and the depth of breast muscle measured by ultrasonography were directly related to breast weight.

Abstract Objectives to evaluate risk factors for recurrence of carcinoma of the uterine cervix among women who had undergone radical hysterectomy without pelvic lymph node metastasis, while taking into consideration not only the classical histopathological factors but also sociodemographic, clinical and treatment-related factors. Study desin This was an exploratory analysis on 233 women with carcinoma of the uterine cervix (stages IB and IIA) who were treated by means of radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy, with free surgical margins and without lymph node metastases on conventional histopathological examination. Women with histologically normal lymph nodes but with micrometastases in the immunohistochemical analysis (AE1/AE3) were excluded. Disease-free survival for sociodemographic, clinical and histopathological variables was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify the independent risk factors for recurrence. Twenty-seven recurrences were recorded (11.6%), of which 18 were pelvic, four were distant, four were pelvic + distant and one was of unknown location. The five-year disease-free survival rate among the study population was 88.4%. The independent risk factors for recurrence in the multivariate analysis were: postmenopausal status (HR 14.1; 95% CI: 3.7-53.6; P < 0.001), absence of or slight inflammatory reaction (HR 7.9; 95% CI: 1.7-36.5; P = 0.008) and invasion of the deepest third of the cervix (HR 6.1; 95% CI: 1.3-29.1; P = 0.021). Postoperative radiotherapy was identified as a protective factor against recurrence (HR 0.02; 95% CI: 0.001-0.25; P = 0.003). (To continue) Postmenopausal status is a possible independent risk factor for recurrence even when adjusted for classical prognostic factors (such as tumour size, depth of tumour invasion, capillary embolisation) and treatment-related factors (period of treatment and postoperative radiotherapy status)

Background Data: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the photoinduction of cytotoxicity using a photosensitizer agent, a light source of the proper wavelength, and the presence of molecular oxygen. A model for tissue response to PDT based on the photodynamic threshold dose (Dth) has been widely used. In this model cells exposed to doses below Dth survive while at doses above the Dth necrosis takes place. Objective: This study evaluated the light Dth values by using two different methods of determination. One model concerns the depth of necrosis and the other the width of superficial necrosis. Materials and Methods: Using normal rat liver we investigated the depth and width of necrosis induced by PDT when a laser with a gaussian intensity profile is used. Different light doses, photosensitizers (Photogem, Photofrin, Photosan, Foscan, Photodithazine, and Radachlorin), and concentrations were employed. Each experiment was performed on five animals and the average and standard deviations were calculated. Results: A simple depth and width of necrosis model analysis allows us to determine the threshold dose by measuring both depth and surface data. Comparison shows that both measurements provide the same value within the degree of experimental error. Conclusion: This work demonstrates that by knowing the extent of the superficial necrotic area of a target tissue irradiated by a gaussian light beam, it is possible to estimate the threshold dose. This technique may find application where the determination of Dth must be done without cutting the tissue.

The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) depends on a variety of parameters: concentration of the photosensitizer at the time of treatment, light wavelength, fluence, fluence rate, availability of oxygen within the illuminated volume, and light distribution in the tissue. Dosimetry in PDT requires the congregation of adequate amounts of light, drug, and tissue oxygen. The adequate dosimetry should be able to predict the extension of the tissue damage. Photosensitizer photobleaching rate depends on the availability of molecular oxygen in the tissue. Based on photosensitizers photobleaching models, high photobleaching has to be associated with high production of singlet oxygen and therefore with higher photodynamic action, resulting in a greater depth of necrosis. The purpose of this work is to show a possible correlation between depth of necrosis and the in vivo photosensitizer (in this case, Photogem (R)) photodegradation during PDT. Such correlation allows possibilities for the development of a real time evaluation of the photodynamic action during PDT application. Experiments were performed in a range of fluence (0-450 J/cm(2)) at a constant fluence rate of 250 mW/cm(2) and applying different illumination times (0-1800 s) to achieve the desired fluence. A quantity was defined (psi) as the product of fluorescence ratio (related to the photosensitizer degradation at the surface) and the observed depth of necrosis. The correlation between depth of necrosis and surface fluorescence signal is expressed in psi and could allow, in principle, a noninvasive monitoring of PDT effects during treatment. High degree of correlation is observed and a simple mathematical model to justify the results is presented.

Objective: In this study we evaluated the ablation rate of superficial and deep dentin irradiated with different Er:YAG laser energy levels, and observed the micromorphological aspects of the lased substrates with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Background Data: Little is known about the effect of Er: YAG laser irradiation on different dentin depths. Materials and Methods: Sixty molar crowns were bisected, providing 120 specimens, which were randomly assigned into two groups ( superficial or deep dentin), and later into five subgroups (160, 200, 260, 300, or 360 mJ). Initial masses of the specimens were obtained. After laser irradiation, the final masses were obtained and mass losses were calculated followed by the preparation of specimens for SEM examination. Mass-loss values were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Fisher's least significant difference multiple-comparison tests (p < 0.05). Results: There was no difference between superficial and deep dentin. A significant and gradual increase in the mass-loss values was reached when energies were raised, regardless of the dentin depth. The energy level of 360 mJ showed the highest values and was statistically significantly different from the other energy levels. The SEM images showed that deep dentin was more selectively ablated, especially intertubular dentin, promoting tubule protrusion. At 360 mJ the micromorphological features were similar for both dentin depths. Conclusion: The ablation rate did not depend on the depth of the dentin, and an energy level lower than 360 mJ is recommended to ablate both superficial and deep dentin effectively without causing tissue damage.

Aims. Our goal is to study the physical properties of the circumstellar environment of young stellar objetcs (YSOs). In particular, the determination of the scattering mechanism can help us to constrain the optical depth of the disk and/or envelope in the near infrared. Methods. We used the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter along with the CamIV infrared camera at the LNA observatory to obtain near infrared polarimetry measurements in the H band of a sample of optically visible YSOs, namely, eleven T Tauri stars and eight Herbig Ae/Be stars. An independent determination of the disk (or jet) orientation was obtained for twelve objects from the literature. The circumstellar optical depth could then be estimated by comparing the integrated polarization position angle (PA) with the direction of the major axis of the disk projected onto the plane of the sky. Optically thin disks have, in general, a polarization PA that is perpendicular to the disk plane. In contrast, optically thick disks have polarization PAs parallel to the disks. Results. Among the T Tauri stars, three are consistent with having optically thin disks (AS 353A, RY Tau and UY Aur) and five with optically thick disks (V536 Aql, DG Tau, DO Tau, HL Tau and LkH alpha 358). Among the Herbig Ae/Be stars, two stars exhibit evidence of optically thin disks (Hen 3-1191 and VV Ser) and two of optically thick disks (PDS 453 and MWC 297). Our results seem consistent with optically thick disks at near infrared bands, which are more likely to be associated with younger YSOs. Marginal evidence of polarization reversal is found in RY Tau, RY Ori, WW Vul, and UY Aur. In the first three cases, this feature can be associated with the UXOR phenomenon. Correlations with the IRAS colors and the spectral index yielded evidence of an evolutionary segregation in which the disks tend to be optically thin when they are older.
