The first mechanical Automaton concept was found in a Chinese text written in the 3rd century BC, while Computer Vision was born in the late 1960s. Therefore, visual perception applied to machines (i.e. the Machine Vision) is a young and exciting alliance. When robots came in, the new field of Robotic Vision was born, and these terms began to be erroneously interchanged. In short, we can say that Machine Vision is an engineering domain, which concern the industrial use of Vision. The Robotic Vision, instead, is a research field that tries to incorporate robotics aspects in computer vision algorithms. Visual Servoing, for example, is one of the problems that cannot be solved by computer vision only. Accordingly, a large part of this work deals with boosting popular Computer Vision techniques by exploiting robotics: e.g. the use of kinematics to localize a vision sensor, mounted as the robot end-effector. The remainder of this work is dedicated to the counterparty, i.e. the use of computer vision to solve real robotic problems like grasping objects or navigate avoiding obstacles. Will be presented a brief survey about mapping data structures most widely used in robotics along with SkiMap, a novel sparse data structure created both for robotic mapping and as a general purpose 3D spatial index. Thus, several approaches to implement Object Detection and Manipulation, by exploiting the aforementioned mapping strategies, will be proposed, along with a completely new Machine Teaching facility in order to simply the training procedure of modern Deep Learning networks.

This thesis investigates if emotional states of users interacting with a virtual robot can be recognized reliably and if specific interaction strategy can change the users’ emotional state and affect users’ risk decision. For this investigation, the OpenFace [1] emotion recognition model was intended to be integrated into the Flobi [2] system, to allow the agent to be aware of the current emotional state of the user and to react appropriately. There was an open source ROS [3] bridge available online to integrate OpenFace to the Flobi simulation but it was not consistent with some other projects in Flobi distribution. Then due to technical reasons DeepFace was selected. In a human-agent interaction, the system is compared to a system without using emotion recognition. Evaluation could happen at different levels: evaluation of emotion recognition model, evaluation of the interaction strategy, and evaluation of effect of interaction on user decision. The results showed that the happy emotion induction was 58% and fear emotion induction 77% successful. Risk decision results show that: in happy induction after interaction 16.6% of participants switched to a lower risk decision and 75% of them did not change their decision and the remaining switched to a higher risk decision. In fear inducted participants 33.3% decreased risk 66.6 % did not change their decision The emotion recognition accuracy was and had bias to. The sensitivity and specificity is calculated for each emotion class. The emotion recognition model classifies happy emotions as neutral in most of the time.

In the Amazon Region, there is a virtual absence of severe malaria and few fatal cases of naturally occurring Plasmodium falciparum infections; this presents an intriguing and underexplored area of research. In addition to the rapid access of infected persons to effective treatment, one cause of this phenomenon might be the recognition of cytoadherent variant proteins on the infected red blood cell (IRBC) surface, including the var gene encoded P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1. In order to establish a link between cytoadherence, IRBC surface antibody recognition and the presence or absence of malaria symptoms, we phenotype-selected four Amazonian P. falciparum isolates and the laboratory strain 3D7 for their cytoadherence to CD36 and ICAM1 expressed on CHO cells. We then mapped the dominantly expressed var transcripts and tested whether antibodies from symptomatic or asymptomatic infections showed a differential recognition of the IRBC surface. As controls, the 3D7 lineages expressing severe disease-associated phenotypes were used. We showed that there was no profound difference between the frequency and intensity of antibody recognition of the IRBC-exposed P. falciparum proteins in symptomatic vs. asymptomatic infections. The 3D7 lineages, which expressed severe malaria-associated phenotypes, were strongly recognised by most, but not all plasmas, meaning that the recognition of these phenotypes is frequent in asymptomatic carriers, but is not necessarily a prerequisite to staying free of symptoms.

Background: While microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in tissue differentiation and in maintaining basal physiology, little is known about the miRNA expression levels in stomach tissue. Alterations in the miRNA profile can lead to cell deregulation, which can induce neoplasia. Methodology/Principal Findings: A small RNA library of stomach tissue was sequenced using high-throughput SOLiD sequencing technology. We obtained 261,274 quality reads with perfect matches to the human miRnome, and 42% of known miRNAs were identified. Digital Gene Expression profiling (DGE) was performed based on read abundance and showed that fifteen miRNAs were highly expressed in gastric tissue. Subsequently, the expression of these miRNAs was validated in 10 healthy individuals by RT-PCR showed a significant correlation of 83.97% (P<0.05). Six miRNAs showed a low variable pattern of expression (miR-29b, miR-29c, miR-19b, miR-31, miR-148a, miR-451) and could be considered part of the expression pattern of the healthy gastric tissue. Conclusions/Significance: This study aimed to validate normal miRNA profiles of human gastric tissue to establish a reference profile for healthy individuals. Determining the regulatory processes acting in the stomach will be important in the fight against gastric cancer, which is the second-leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide.

The effects of myotoxin III (MT-III), a phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2)) from Bothrops asper snake venom, and crotoxin B (CB), a neurotoxic and myotoxic sPLA2 from the venom of Crotalus durissus terrificus, on cyclooxygenases (COXs) expression and biosynthesis of prostaglandins (PGs) were evaluated, together with the mechanisms involved in these effects. Upon intraperitoneal injection in mice, both sPLA(2)s promoted the synthesis of PGD(2) and PGE(2), with a different time-course. MT-III, but not CB, induced COX-2 expression by peritoneal leukocytes without modification on COX-1 constitutive expression, whereas CB increased the constitutive activity of COX-1. MT-III increased the enzymatic activity of COX-1 and COX-2. Similar effects were observed when these sPLA(2)s were incubated with isolated macrophages, evidencing a direct effect on these inflammatory cells. Moreover, both toxins elicited the release of arachidonic acid from macrophages in vitro. inhibition of cPLA(2) by AACOCF(3), but not of iPLA(2) by PACOCF(3) or BEL, significantly reduced PGD2, PGE2 and arachidonic acid (AA) release promoted by MT-III. These inhibitors did not affect MT-III-induced COX-2 expression. In contrast, cPLA2 inhibition did not modify the effects of CB, whereas iPLA2 inhibition reduced PGD2 and AA production induced by CB. These findings imply that distinct regulatory mechanisms leading to PGs` synthesis are triggered by these snake venom sPLA(2)s. Such differences are likely to explain the dissimilar patterns of inflammatory reaction elicited by these sPLA(2)s in vivo. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article details the author’s attempts to improve understanding of organisational behaviour through investigation of the cognitive and affective processes that underlie attitudes and behaviour. To this end, the paper describes the author’s earlier work on the attribution theory of leadership and, more recently, in three areas of emotion research: affective events theory, emotional intelligence, and the effect of supervisors’ facial expression on employees’ perceptions of leader-member exchange quality. The paper summarises the author’s research on these topics, shows how they have contributed to furthering our understanding of organisational behaviour, suggests where research in these areas are going, and draws some conclusions for management practice.

Extracting human postural information from video sequences has proved a difficult research question. The most successful approaches to date have been based on particle filtering, whereby the underlying probability distribution is approximated by a set of particles. The shape of the underlying observational probability distribution plays a significant role in determining the success, both accuracy and efficiency, of any visual tracker. In this paper we compare approaches used by other authors and present a cost path approach which is commonly used in image segmentation problems, however is currently not widely used in tracking applications.

The reconstruction of a complex scene from multiple images is a fundamental problem in the field of computer vision. Volumetric methods have proven to be a strong alternative to traditional correspondence-based methods due to their flexible visibility models. In this paper we analyse existing methods for volumetric reconstruction and identify three key properties of voxel colouring algorithms: a water-tight surface model, a monotonic carving order, and causality. We present a new Voxel Colouring algorithm which embeds all reconstructions of a scene into a single output. While modelling exact visibility for arbitrary camera locations, Embedded Voxel Colouring removes the need for a priori threshold selection present in previous work. An efficient implementation is given along with results demonstrating the advantages of posteriori threshold selection.

Objective To assess MHC I and II expressions in muscle fibres of juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) and compare with the expression in polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and dystrophy. Patients and methods Forty-eight JDM patients and 17 controls (8 PM, 5 DM and 4 dystrophy) were studied. The mean age at disease onset was 7.1 +/- 3.0 years and the mean duration of weakness before biopsy was 9.4 +/- 12.9 months. Routine histochemistry and immunohistochemistry (StreptABComplex/HRP) for MHC I and II (Dakopatts) were performed on serial frozen muscle sections in all patients. Mann-Whitney, Kruskal Wallis, chi-square and Fisher`s exact statistical methods were used. Results MHC I expression was positive in 47 (97.9%) JDM cases. This expression was observed independent of time of disease corticotherapy previous to muscle biopsy and to the grading of inflammation observed in clinical, laboratorial and histological parameters. The expression of MHC I was similar on JDM, PM and DM, and lower in dystrophy. On the other hand, MHC II expression was positive in just 28.2% of JDM cases was correlated to histological features as inflammatory infiltrate, increased connective tissue and VAS for global degree of abnormality (p < 0.05). MCH II expression was similar in DM/PM and lower in JDM and dystrophy, and it was based on the frequency of positive staining rather than to the degree of the MCH II expression. Conclusions MHC I expression in muscle fibres is a premature and late marker of JDM patient independent to corticotherapy, and MHC II expression was lower in JDM than in PM and DM.

To examine abnormal patterns of frontal cortical-subcortical activity in response to emotional stimuli in euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder type I in order to identify trait-like, pathophysiologic mechanisms of the disorder. We examined potential confounding effects of total psychotropic medication load and illness variables upon neural abnormalities. We analyzed neural activity in 19 euthymic bipolar and 24 healthy individuals to mild and intense happy, fearful and neutral faces. Relative to healthy individuals, bipolar subjects had significantly increased left striatal activity in response to mild happy faces (p < 0.05, corrected), decreased right dorsolateral prefrontal cortical (DLPFC) activity in response to neutral, mild and intense happy faces, and decreased left DLPFC activity in response to neutral, mild and intense fearful faces (p < 0.05, corrected). Bipolar and healthy individuals did not differ in amygdala activity in response to either emotion. In bipolar individuals, there was no significant association between medication load and abnormal activity in these regions, but a negative relationship between age of illness onset and amygdala activity in response to mild fearful faces (p = 0.007). Relative to those without comorbidities, bipolar individuals with comorbidities showed a trend increase in left striatal activity in response to mild happy faces. Abnormally increased striatal activity in response to potentially rewarding stimuli and decreased DLPFC activity in response to other emotionally salient stimuli may underlie mood instabilities in euthymic bipolar individuals, and are more apparent in those with comorbid diagnoses. No relationship between medication load and abnormal neural activity in bipolar individuals suggests that our findings may reflect pathophysiologic mechanisms of the illness rather than medication confounds. Future studies should examine whether this pattern of abnormal neural activity could distinguish bipolar from unipolar depression.

Background/Aims: The expression of cancer/testis antigens (CTAs) on additional normal tissues or stem cells may restrict their use as cancer targets. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the mRNA levels of some CTAs in a variety of tissues. Materials and Methods: mRNA of pericytes, fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from adult and fetal tissues, human umbilical vein endothelial cells, MSC-derived adipocytes, selected normal tissues and control cancer cell lines (CLs) were extracted and quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed for MAGED1, PRAME, CTAG1B, MAGEA3 and MAGEA4. Results: MAGED1 was expressed in all normal tissues and cells evaluated. CTAG1B was expressed at levels comparable to control CLs on MSCs derived from arterial, fetal skin, adipose tissue and saphenous vein, heart, brain and skin tissues. MAGEA4 was detected only in fibroblasts and differentiated adipocytes from MSCs, at levels comparable to the control CLs. Conclusion: The potential use of CTAs in immunotherapy should take into account the potential off-target effects on MSCs.

The objectives of this study were to check music and voice message influence on vital signs and facial expressions of patients with disorders of consciousness and to connect the existence of patient`s responses with the Glasgow Coma Scale or with the Ramsay Sedation Scale. The method was a single-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial with 30 patients, from two intensive care units, being divided into two groups (control and experimental). Their relatives recorded a voice message and chose a song according to the patient`s preference. The patients were submitted to three sessions for three consecutive days. Significant statistical alterations of the vital signs were noted during the message playback (oxygen saturation-Day 1 and Day 3; respiratory frequency-Day 3) and with facial expression, on Day 1, during both music and message. The conclusion was that the voice message was a stronger stimulus than the music.

Several neuropsychiatry disorders have shown a sexual dimorphism in their incidence, symptom profile and therapeutic response. A better understanding of the impact of sex hormones in emotional processing sexual dimorphism could bring tight to this important clinical finding. Some studies have provided evidence of sex differences in the identification of emotional faces, however, results are inconsistent and such inconsistency could be related to the lack of experimental control of the sex hormone status of participants. More recently, a few studies evaluated the modulation of facial emotion recognition by the phase of the menstrual cycle and sex hormones, however, none of them directly compared these results with a group of men. We evaluated the accuracy of facial emotion recognition in 40 healthy volunteers. Eleven women were assigned to early follicular group, nine women to the ovulatory group and 10 women to luteal group, depending on the phase of menstrual cycle, and a group of 10 men were also evaluated. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels were assessed. The performance of the groups in the identification of emotional faces varied depending on the emotion. Early follicular group were more accurate to perceive angry faces than all other groups. Sadness was more accurately recognized by early follicular group than by luteal group and regarding the recognition of fearful faces a trend to a better performance and a significantly higher accuracy was observed, respectively, in the early follicular group and in the ovulatory group, in comparison to men. In women, estrogen negatively correlated to the accuracy in perception of angry mate faces. Our results indicate sex hormones to be implicated in a sexual dimorphism in facial emotion recognition, and highlight the importance of estrogen specifically in the recognition of negative emotions such as sadness, anger and fear. Proteomic approaches have been useful for the identification of aberrantly expressed proteins in complex diseases such as cancer. These proteins are not only potential disease biomarkers, but also targets for therapy. The aim of this study was to identify differentially expressed proteins in diffuse astrocytoma grade II, anaplastic astrocytoma grade III and glioblastoma multiforme grade IV in human tumor samples and in non-neoplastic brain tissue as control using 2-DE and MS. Tumor and control brain tissue dissection was guided by histological hematoxylin/eosin tissue sections to provide more than 90% of tumor cells and astrocytes. Six proteins were detected as up-regulated in higher grade astrocytomas and the most important finding was nucleophosmin (NPM) (p < 0.05), whereas four proteins were down-regulated, among them raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP) (p < 0.05). We report here for the first time the alteration of NPM and RKIP expression in brain cancer. Our focus on these proteins was due to the fact that they are involved in the PI3K/AKT/mTOR and RAS/RAF/MAPK pathways, known for their contribution to the development and progression of gliomas. The proteomic data for NPM and RKIP were confirmed by Western blot, quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. Due to the participation of NPM and RKIP in uncontrolled proliferation and evasion of apoptosis, these proteins are likely targets for drug development.
