A graph G is a common multiple of two graphs H-1 and H-2 if there exists a decomposition of G into edge-disjoint copies of H-1 and also a decomposition of G into edge-disjoint copies of H-2. In this paper, we consider the case where H-1 is the 4-cycle C-4 and H-2 is the complete graph with n vertices K-n. There are strong associations between childhood sleep disorders and behavioural, concentration and mood problems. Sleep disorders caused and maintained by behavioural factors (eg, sleep-onset association disorder) are common in young children, and have a significant impact on families. Evaluation should include a medical history, a physical, neurological and developmental examination, a description of any nocturnal events or daytime effects of the child's disturbed sleep, and a good understanding of the family situation and parental management of the child. Management involves recognising the developmental age of the child and the family dynamics, and educating and supporting families in applying behavioural techniques to establish good sleep hygiene. Children with parasomnias (eg, night terrors) also benefit from good sleep hygiene, while those with respiratory or neurological causes of sleep disturbance should be referred for specialist treatment.

The main advantage of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is that it does not require any priori weights for inputs and outputs and allows individual DMUs to evaluate their efficiencies with the input and output weights that are only most favorable weights for calculating their efficiency. It can be argued that if DMUs are experiencing similar circumstances, then the pricing of inputs and outputs should apply uniformly across all DMUs. That is using of different weights for DMUs makes their efficiencies unable to be compared and not possible to rank them on the same basis. This is a significant drawback of DEA; however literature observed many solutions including the use of common set of weights (CSW). Besides, the conventional DEA methods require accurate measurement of both the inputs and outputs; however, crisp input and output data may not relevant be available in real world applications. This paper develops a new model for the calculation of CSW in fuzzy environments using fuzzy DEA. Further, a numerical example is used to show the validity and efficacy of the proposed model and to compare the results with previous models available in the literature.

Background - Recent studies have implicated variants of the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene in genetic susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus in several different populations. The aim of this study was to determine whether variants of this gene are also risk factors for type 2 diabetes development in a UK-resident South Asian cohort of Punjabi ancestry. Methods - We genotyped four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TCF7L2 (rs7901695, rs7903146, rs11196205 and rs12255372) in 831 subjects with diabetes and 437 control subjects. Results - The minor allele of each variant was significantly associated with type 2 diabetes; the greatest risk of developing the disease was conferred by rs7903146, with an allelic odds ratio (OR) of 1.31 (95% CI: 1.11 – 1.56, p = 1.96 × 10-3). For each variant, disease risk associated with homozygosity for the minor allele was greater than that for heterozygotes, with the exception of rs12255372. To determine the effect on the observed associations of including young control subjects in our data set, we reanalysed the data using subsets of the control group defined by different minimum age thresholds. Increasing the minimum age of our control subjects resulted in a corresponding increase in OR for all variants of the gene (p ≤ 1.04 × 10-7). Conclusion - Our results support recent findings that TCF7L2 is an important genetic risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes in multiple ethnic groups.

It attempts to establish the level of development of this process in the country, to identify the good examples and information gaps in order to outline the priorities and perspectives.

In 1917 Pell (1) and Gordon used sylvester2, Sylvester’s little known and hardly ever used matrix of 1853, to compute(2) the coefficients of a Sturmian remainder — obtained in applying in Q[x], Sturm’s algorithm on two polynomials f, g ∈ Z[x] of degree n — in terms of the determinants (3) of the corresponding submatrices of sylvester2. Thus, they solved a problem that had eluded both J. J. Sylvester, in 1853, and E. B. Van Vleck, in 1900. A Szolvencia II néven említett új irányelv elfogadása az Európai Unióban új helyzetet teremt a biztosítók tőkeszükséglet-számításánál. A tanulmány a biztosítók működését modellezve azt elemzi, hogyan hatnak a biztosítók állományának egyes jellemzői a tőkeszükséglet értékére egy olyan elméleti modellben, amelyben a tőkeszükséglet-értékek a Szolvencia II szabályok alapján számolhatók. A modellben biztosítási illetve pénzügyi kockázati "modul" figyelembevételére kerül sor külön-külön számolással, illetve a két kockázatfajta közös modellben való együttes figyelembevételével (a Szolvencia II eredményekkel való összehasonlításhoz). Az elméleti eredmények alapján megállapítható, hogy a tőkeszükségletre vonatkozóan számolható értékek eltérhetnek e két esetben. Az eredmények alapján lehetőség van az eltérések hátterében álló tényezők tanulmányozására is. ____ The new Solvency II directive results in a new environment for calculating the solvency capital requirement of insurance companies in the European Union. By modelling insurance companies the study analyses the impact of certain characteristics of insurance population on the solvency capital based on Solvency II rules. The model includes insurance and financial risk module by calculating solvency capital for the given risk types separately and together, respectively. Based on the theoretical results the difference between these two approaches can be observed. Based on the results the analysis of factors in°uencing the differences is also possible.

Anticoagulant agents are commonly used drugs to reduce blood coagulation in acute and chronic clinical settings. Many of these drugs target the common pathway of coagulation because it is critical for thrombin generation and disruption of this portion of the pathway has profound effects on the hemostatic process. Currently available drugs for these indications struggle with balancing desired activity with immunogenicity and poor reversibility or irreversibility in the event of hemorrhage. While improvements are being made with the current drugs, new drugs with better therapeutic indices are needed for surgical intervention and chronic indications to prevent thrombosis from occurring.
A class of therapeutics known as aptamers may be able to meet the need for safer anticoagulant agents. Aptamer are short single-stranded RNA oligonucleotides that adopt specific secondary and tertiary structures based upon their sequence. They can be generated to both enzymes and cofactors because they derive their inhibitory activity by blocking protein-protein interactions, rather than active site inhibition. They inhibit their target proteins with a high level of specificity and bind with high affinity to their target. Additionally, they can be reversed using two different antidote approaches, specific oligonucleotide antidotes, or with cationic, “universal” antidotes. The reversal of their activity is both rapid and durable.
The ability of aptamers to be generated to cofactors has been conclusively proven by generating an aptamer targeting the common pathway coagulation cofactor, Factor V (FV). We developed two aptamers with anticoagulant ability that bind to both FV and FVa, the active cofactor. Both aptamers were truncated to smaller functional sizes and had specific point mutant aptamers developed for use as controls. The anticoagulant activity of both aptamer-mutant pairs was characterized using plasma-based clotting assays and whole blood assays. The mechanism of action resulting in anticoagulant activity was assessed for one aptamer. The aptamer was found to block FVa docking to membrane surfaces, a mechanism not previously observed in any of our other anticoagulant aptamers.
To explore development of aptamers as anticoagulant agents targeting the common pathway for surgical interventions, we fused two anticoagulant aptamers targeting Factor X and prothrombin into a single molecule. The bivalent aptamer was truncated to a minimal size while maintaining robust anticoagulant activity. Characterization of the bivalent aptamer in plasma-based clotting assays indicated we had generated a very robust anticoagulant therapeutic. Furthermore, we were able to simultaneously reverse the activity of both aptamers with a single oligonucleotide antidote. This rapid and complete reversal of anticoagulant activity is not available in the antithrombotic agents currently used in surgery.

Concern about the impacts of ocean acidification (OA) on ecosystem function has prompted many studies to focus on larval recruitment, demonstrating declines in settlement and early growth at elevated CO2 concentrations. Since larval settlement is often driven by particular cues governed by crustose coralline algae (CCA), it is important to determine whether OA reduces larval recruitment with specific CCA and the generality of any effects. We tested the effect of elevated CO2 on the survival and settlement of larvae from the common spawning coral Acropora selago with 3 ecologically important species of CCA, Porolithon onkodes, Sporolithon sp., and Titanoderma sp. After 3 d in no-choice laboratory assays at 447, 705, and 1214 µatm pCO2, the rates of coral settlement declined as pCO2 increased with all CCA taxa. The magnitude of the effect was highest with Titanoderma sp., decreasing by 87% from the ambient to highest CO2 treatment. In general, there were high rates of larval mortality, which were greater with the P. onkodes and Sporolithon sp. treatments (~80%) compared to the Titanoderma sp. treatment (65%). There was an increase in larval mortality as pCO2 increased, but this was variable among the CCA species. It appears that OA reduces coral settlement by rapidly altering the chemical cues associated with the CCA thalli and microbial community, and potentially by directly affecting larval viability.
