Currently there are two car models that use electricity in their propulsion systems, the electric vehicle and the hybrid electric vehicle. The electric vehicles are classified as vehicles that use electric motors in their propulsion system and batteries as a power source, on the other hand, the hybrid vehicles are classified as vehicles that use both electric motors and internal combustion engines in their propulsion system, using both batteries and líquid fuels as a power source. The main goal of this work is to analyze the characteristics of electric and hybrid electric vehicles and demonstrate the unfeasibility of the electric vehicle in the current economic, political, energetic and environmental brazilian scenario, for this purpose it was realized a study about the current brazilian situation regarding to electricity generation, current conservation status of road network, lack of electrical infrastructure for charging batteries, national lithium reserves, environmental characteristics, tax incentives, economic scenario, oil market and political positioning related to the implantation of electric or hybrid electric fleets in nacional territory. The operational characteristics analysis of electric and hybrid electric vehicles in this current scenario leads to the conclusion that currently a growth of electric vehicles fleets on a national scale is totally impractical in the Brazil, Thus, the introduction of green vehicles probably will occur primarily with hybrid electric models, motivated mainly due the bigger autonomy of this models compared to electric models, lower cost of hybrid electric models compared to electric models, factors related to the lack of recharging infrastructure and also factors related to political positioning

Background: The progression of diabetes and the challenge of daily tasks may result in changes in biomechanical strategies. Descending stairs is a common task that patients have to deal with, however it still has not been properly studied in this population. Objectives: We describe and compare the net joint moments and kinematics of the lower limbs in diabetic individuals with and without peripheral neuropathy and healthy controls during stair descent. Method: Forty-two adults were assessed: control group (13), diabetic group (14), and neuropathic diabetic group (15). The flexor and extensor net moment peaks and joint angles of the hip, knee, and ankle were described and compared in terms of effect size and ANOVAs (p<0.05). Results: Both diabetic groups presented greater dorsiflexion [large effect size] and a smaller hip extensor moment [large effect size] in the weight acceptance phase. In the propulsion phase, diabetics with and without neuropathy showed a greater hip flexor moment [large effect size] and smaller ankle extension [large effect size]. Conclusion: Diabetic patients, even without neuropathy, revealed poor eccentric control in the weight acceptance phase, and in the propulsion phase, they showed a different hip strategy, where they chose to take the leg off the ground using more flexion torque at the hip instead of using a proper ankle extension function.

A complete census of planetary systems around a volume-limited sample of solar-type stars (FGK dwarfs) in the Solar neighborhood (d a parts per thousand currency signaEuro parts per thousand 15 pc) with uniform sensitivity down to Earth-mass planets within their Habitable Zones out to several AUs would be a major milestone in extrasolar planets astrophysics. This fundamental goal can be achieved with a mission concept such as NEAT-the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope. NEAT is designed to carry out space-borne extremely-high-precision astrometric measurements at the 0.05 mu as (1 sigma) accuracy level, sufficient to detect dynamical effects due to orbiting planets of mass even lower than Earth's around the nearest stars. Such a survey mission would provide the actual planetary masses and the full orbital geometry for all the components of the detected planetary systems down to the Earth-mass limit. The NEAT performance limits can be achieved by carrying out differential astrometry between the targets and a set of suitable reference stars in the field. The NEAT instrument design consists of an off-axis parabola single-mirror telescope (D = 1 m), a detector with a large field of view located 40 m away from the telescope and made of 8 small movable CCDs located around a fixed central CCD, and an interferometric calibration system monitoring dynamical Young's fringes originating from metrology fibers located at the primary mirror. The mission profile is driven by the fact that the two main modules of the payload, the telescope and the focal plane, must be located 40 m away leading to the choice of a formation flying option as the reference mission, and of a deployable boom option as an alternative choice. The proposed mission architecture relies on the use of two satellites, of about 700 kg each, operating at L2 for 5 years, flying in formation and offering a capability of more than 20,000 reconfigurations. The two satellites will be launched in a stacked configuration using a Soyuz ST launch vehicle. The NEAT primary science program will encompass an astrometric survey of our 200 closest F-, G- and K-type stellar neighbors, with an average of 50 visits each distributed over the nominal mission duration. The main survey operation will use approximately 70% of the mission lifetime. The remaining 30% of NEAT observing time might be allocated, for example, to improve the characterization of the architecture of selected planetary systems around nearby targets of specific interest (low-mass stars, young stars, etc.) discovered by Gaia, ground-based high-precision radial-velocity surveys, and other programs. With its exquisite, surgical astrometric precision, NEAT holds the promise to provide the first thorough census for Earth-mass planets around stars in the immediate vicinity of our Sun.

Increasingly stringent exhaust emission limits and higher fuel economy are the main drivers of the engine development process. As a consequence, the complexity of the propulsion units and its subsystems increase, due to the extensive use of sensors and actuators needed to obtain a precise control over the combustion phase. Since engine calibration process consumes most of the development time, new tools and methodologies are needed to shorten the development time and increase the performance attainable. Real time combustion analysis, based on the in-cylinder pressure signal, can significantly improve the calibration of the engine control strategies and the development of new algorithms, giving instantaneous feedback on the engine behavior. A complete combustion analysis and diagnosis system has been developed, capable of evaluating the most important indicators about the combustion process, such as indicated mean effective pressure, heat release, mass fraction burned and knock indexes. Such a tool is built on top of a flexible, modular and affordable hardware platform, capable of satisfying the requirements needed for accuracy and precision, but also enabling the use directly on-board the vehicle, due to its small form factor.

„Extraterrestrische und terrestrische Anwendungen eines miniaturisierten Mössbauer-Spektrometers“ Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit Anwendungen eines miniaturisierten Mössbauer- Spektrometers (MIMOS II), dessen Entwicklung in den frühen neunziger Jahren am Institut für Kernphysik der Technischen Universität Darmstadt unter Professor Egbert Kankeleit und seinen Mitarbeitern begann. Seit 1998 sind die Entwicklungsarbeiten im Arbeitskreis von Prof. Gütlich am Institut für Anorganische und Analytische Chemie der Johannes Gutenberg- Universität Mainz von Dr. Göstar Klingelhöfer und Mitarbeitern fortgesetzt worden. Vorrangiges Ziel war dabei der geplante Einsatz des Spektrometers zu mineralogischen Untersuchungen im Weltall. Entsprechend ist das Projekt mit erheblichen finanziellen Mitteln des Forschungsinstituts der Deutschen Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) in Bonn unterstützt worden. Bei den beiden Missionen, die im Jahre 2003 von der NASA zum Mars gesandt wurden und im Januar dieses Jahres die beiden „Mars Exploration Rover“ (MER) "Spirit" und "Opportunity" erfolgreich auf der Marsoberfläche abgesetzt haben, ist jeweils ein MIMOS II-Gerät zur Charakterisierung eisenhaltiger Minerale und Böden während der laufenden Mission im Einsatz. Einige Ergebnisse von MIMOS II an Gestein und Böden der Marsoberfläche werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit präsentiert und diskutiert. Diese Ergebnisse wurden vom MIMOS II-Consortium unter Führung von Dr. Göstar Klingelhöfer, mit Unterstützung des Ingenieurs- und Wissenschaftsteams von MER am Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Kalifornien, erlangt. Erste Spektren, die von Proben im Gusev-Krater (Landestelle von „Spirit“) aufgenommen wurden und in dieser Arbeit vorgestellt werden, weisen auf das Vorkommen von forsteritischem Olivin, Pyroxen, Magnetit hin; daneben zeigt sich ein von Eisen(III) herrührendes Quadrupoldublett, das (noch) nicht eindeutig zugeordnet werden konnte. Aus den gewonnenen Daten wurde geschlossen, dass physikalische Verwitterung der vorherrschende Veränderungsprozess in den Ebenen des Gusev-Kraters ist. Um die Fähigkeiten von MIMOS II in der Charakteriserung extraterrestrischen Materials vor dem Start zum Mars zu demonstrieren, wurde eine Auswahl von chondritischen, Eisenund Marsmeteoriten gemessen. Ein Datenanalysepaket, basierend auf künstlichen neuronalen Netzwerken, genetischen Algorithmen und "fuzzy" Logik, wurde erstellt, erfolgreich getestet und während der Echtzeit-Operation der MER benutzt. Eine Datenbasis von Mössbauer-Parametern und Referenzen von veröffentlichten Studien über den Temperaturbereich des Mars wurde zusammengestellt. Die Werkzeuge zur Datenanalyse eröffnen neue Einsatzmöglichkeiten des miniaturisierten Mössbauer-Spektrometers in vielen Bereichen ausserhalb des Physikllabors. Einige davon werden in dieser Arbeit vorgestellt, wie z.B.die Pigmentcharakterisierung, die Echtheit archäologischer Artefakte oder in-situ Luftverschmutzungsmessungen. Datum: 20.07.2004 1. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde ein flugzeuggetragenes Laserablations-Einzelpartikel-Massenspektrometer von Grund auf entworfen, gebaut, charakterisiert und auf verschiedenen Feldmesskampagnen eingesetzt. Das ALABAMA (Aircraft-based Laser ABlation Aerosol MAss Spectrometer) ist in der Lage die chemische Zusammensetzung und Größe von einzelnen Aerosolpartikeln im submikrometer-Bereich (135 – 900 nm) zu untersuchen.rnNach dem Fokussieren in einer aerodynamischen Linse wird dafür zunächst derrnaerodynamische Durchmesser der einzelnen Partikel mit Hilfe einer Flugzeitmessung zwischen zwei Dauerstrichlasern bestimmt. Anschließend werden die zuvor detektierten und klassifizierten Partikel durch einen gezielten Laserpuls einzeln verdampft und ionisiert. Die Ionen werden in einem bipolaren Flugzeit-Massenspektrometer entsprechend ihrem Masse zu- Ladungs Verhältnisses getrennt und detektiert. Die entstehenden Massenspektren bieten einen detaillierten Einblick in die chemische Struktur der einzelnen Partikel.rnDas gesamte Instrument wurde so konzipiert, dass es auf dem neuen Höhenforschungsflugzeug HALO und anderen mobilen Plattformen eingesetzt werden kann. Um dies zu ermöglichen wurden alle Komponenten in einem Rahmen mit weniger als 0.45 m³ Volumen untergebracht. Das gesamte Instrument inklusive Rahmen wiegt weniger als 150 kg und erfüllt die strengen sicherheitsvorschriften für den Betrieb an Bord von Forschungsflugzeugen. Damit ist ALABAMA das kleinste und leichteste Instrument seiner Art.rnNach dem Aufbau wurden die Eigenschaften und Grenzen aller Komponenten detailliert im Labor und auf Messkampagnen charakterisiert. Dafür wurden zunächst die Eigenschaften des Partikelstrahls, wie beispielsweise Strahlbreite und –divergenz, ausführlich untersucht. Die Ergebnisse waren wichtig, um die späteren Messungen der Detektions- und Ablationseffizienz zu validieren.rnBei den anschließenden Effizienzmessungen wurde gezeigt, dass abhängig von ihrer Größe und Beschaffenheit, bis zu 86 % der vorhandenen Aerosolpartikel erfolgreich detektiert und größenklassifiziert werden. Bis zu 99.5 % der detektierten Partikel konnten ionisiert und somit chemisch untersucht werden. Diese sehr hohen Effizienzen sind insbesondere für Messungen in großer Höhe entscheidend, da dort zum Teil nur sehr geringe Partikelkonzentrationen vorliegen.rnDas bipolare Massenspektrometer erzielt durchschnittliche Massenauflösungen von bis zu R=331. Während Labor- und Feldmessungen konnten dadurch Elemente wie Au, Rb, Co, Ni, Si, Ti und Pb eindeutig anhand ihres Isotopenmusters zugeordnet werden.rnErste Messungen an Bord eines ATR-42 Forschungsflugzeuges während der MEGAPOLI Kampagne in Paris ergaben einen umfassenden Datensatz von Aerosolpartikeln innerhalb der planetaren Grenzschicht. Das ALABAMA konnte unter harten physischen Bedingungen (Temperaturen > 40°C, Beschleunigungen +/- 2 g) verlässlich und präzise betrieben werden. Anhand von charakteristischen Signalen in den Massenspektren konnten die Partikel zuverlässig in 8 chemische Klassen unterteilt werden. Einzelne Klassen konnten dabei bestimmten Quellen zugeordnet werden. So ließen sich beispielsweise Partikel mit starkerrnNatrium- und Kaliumsignatur eindeutig auf die Verbrennung von Biomasse zurückführen.rnALABAMA ist damit ein wertvolles Instrument um Partikel in-situ zu charakterisieren und somit verschiedenste wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen, insbesondere im Bereich der Atmosphärenforschung, zu untersuchen.

Das Verhalten kolloidaler Suspensionen unter räumlich beschränkter Geometrie ist von großer Bedeutung für die statistische Physik wie auch für die Technologie. Von speziellem Interesse sind Modellsysteme geladener kolloidaler Sphären aufgrund ihrer langreichweitigen und veränderbaren Wechselwirkungen. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein experimenteller Aufbau für die optische mikroskopische Untersuchung solcher, zwischen ebenen Wänden beschränkter Systeme realisiert. Anhand von Piezo-Aktuatoren kann die Zellgeometrie flexibel und präzise eingestellt werden. Unter Verwendung eines Pumpkreislaufs mit einer Ionentauschersäule können kolloidale Suspensionen unter stark entsalzten Bedingungen effizient präpariert werden. Anhand dieses Aufbaus wurde zunächst das Gleichgewichtsphasendiagramm monodisperser geladener kolloidaler Sphären zwischen parallelen Wänden untersucht. Es wurden quantitative Resultate für den Grenzfall starker Entsalzung erzielt, welche mit theoretischen Grundzustandsvorhersagen übereinstimmen. In Doppellagensystemen konnte die Existenz transienter kolloidaler Moiré-Rotationsmuster demonstriert werden, welche besondere zweidimensionale Kristallstrukturen mit komplexer Basis darstellen. Es wurden ferner Nichtgleichgewichtsphänomene untersucht, welche durch Gradienten von lokal freigesetzten Elektrolyten verursacht werden. Durch hauptsächlich diffusioosmotischen Partikeltransport entlang einer einzelnen geladenen Substratoberfläche konnten die Bildung kristalliner Ordnung sowie komplexe, selbstorganisierte Bewegungszustände in einem verdünnten kolloidalen Monolagenfluid bei kleinen Reynolds-Zahlen induziert werden. Interessante Perspektiven für die zukünftige Verwendung des experimentellen Aufbaus ergeben sich aus Beobachtungen verschiedener weiterer Phänomene.

Migrating lymphocytes acquire a polarized phenotype with a leading and a trailing edge, or uropod. Although in vitro experiments in cell lines or activated primary cell cultures have established that Rho-p160 coiled-coil kinase (ROCK)-myosin II-mediated uropod contractility is required for integrin de-adhesion on two-dimensional surfaces and nuclear propulsion through narrow pores in three-dimensional matrices, less is known about the role of these two events during the recirculation of primary, nonactivated lymphocytes. Using pharmacological antagonists of ROCK and myosin II, we report that inhibition of uropod contractility blocked integrin-independent mouse T cell migration through narrow, but not large, pores in vitro. T cell crawling on chemokine-coated endothelial cells under shear was severely impaired by ROCK inhibition, whereas transendothelial migration was only reduced through endothelial cells with high, but not low, barrier properties. Using three-dimensional thick-tissue imaging and dynamic two-photon microscopy of T cell motility in lymphoid tissue, we demonstrated a significant role for uropod contractility in intraluminal crawling and transendothelial migration through lymph node, but not bone marrow, endothelial cells. Finally, we demonstrated that ICAM-1, but not anatomical constraints or integrin-independent interactions, reduced parenchymal motility of inhibitor-treated T cells within the dense lymphoid microenvironment, thus assigning context-dependent roles for uropod contraction during lymphocyte recirculation.

A Hall thruster, an E × B device used for in-space propulsion, utilizes an axial electric field to electrostatically accelerate plasma propellant from the spacecraft. The axial electric field is created by positively biasing the anode so that the positivelycharged ions may be accelerated (repelled) from the thruster, which produces thrust. However, plasma electrons are much smaller than ions and may be accelerated much more quickly toward the anode; if electrons were not impeded, a "short circuit" due to the electron flow would eliminate the thrust mechanism. Therefore, a magnetic field serves to "magnetize" plasma electrons internal to the thruster and confines them in gyro-orbits within the discharge channel. Without outside factors electrons would be confined indefinitely; however, electron-neutral collisions provide a mechanism to free electrons from their orbits allowing electrons to cross the magnetic field toward the anode, where this process is described by classical transport theory. To make matters worse, cross-field electron transport has been observed to be 100-1000 times that predicted by classical collisional theory, providing an efficiency loss mechanism and an obstacle for modeling and simulations in Hall thrusters. The main difficulty in studying electron transport in Hall thrusters is the coupling that exists between the plasma and the fields, where the plasma creates and yet is influenced by the electric field. A device has been constructed at MTU’s Isp Lab, the Hall Electron Mobility Gage, which was designed specifically to study electron transport in E × B devices, where the coupling between the plasma and electric field was virtually eliminated. In this device the two most cited contributors to electron transport in Hall thrusters, fluctuation-induced transport, and wall effects, were absent. Removing the dielectric walls and plasma fluctuations, while maintaining the field environment in vacuum, has allowed the study of electron dynamics in Hall thruster fields where the electrons behave as test particles in prescribed fields, greatly simplifying the environment. Therefore, it was possible to observe any effects on transport not linked to the cited mechanisms, and it was possible to observe trends of the enhanced mobility with control parameters of electric and magnetic fields and neutral density– parameters that are not independently variable in a Hall thruster. The result of the investigation was the observation of electron transport that was ~ 20-100 times the classical prediction. The cross-field electron transport in the Mobility Gage was generally lower than that found in a Hall thruster so these findings do not negate the possibility of fluctuations and/or wall collisions contributing to transport in a Hall thruster. However, this research led to the observation of enhanced cross-field transport that had not been previously isolated in Hall thruster fields, which is not reliant on momentum-transfer collisions, wall collisions or fluctuations.

With energy demands and costs growing every day, the need for improving energy efficiency in electrical devices has become very important. Research into various methods of improving efficiency for all electrical components will be a key to meet future energy needs. This report documents the design, construction, and testing of a research quality electric machine dynamometer and test bed. This test cell system can be used for research in several areas including: electric drives systems, electric vehicle propulsion systems, power electronic converters, load/source element in an AC Microgrid, as well as many others. The test cell design criteria, and decisions, will be discussed in reference to user functionality and flexibility. The individual power components will be discussed in detail to how they relate to the project, highlighting any feature used in operation of the test cell. A project timeline will be discussed, clearly stating the work done by the different individuals involved in the project. In addition, the system will be parameterized and benchmark data will be used to provide the functional operation of the system. LiFePO4 is a Co-free battery material. Its advantages of low cost, non-toxic and flat discharge plateau show promising for vehicle propulsion applications. A major problem associated with this material is its low electrical conductivity. Use of nanosized LiFePO4 coated with carbon is considered a solution because the nanosized particles have much shorter path for L+ ions to travel from the LiFePO4 crystal lattice to electrolytes. As other nano material powders, however, nano LiFePO4 could have processing and health issues. In order to achieve high electrical conductivity while maintaining a satisfactory manufacturability, the particles should possess both of the nano- and the microcharacteristics correspondingly. These two contradictory requirements could only be fulfilled if the LiFePO4 powders have a hierarchical structure: micron-sized parent particles assembled by nanosized crystallites with appropriate electrolyte communication channels. This study addressed the issue by study of the formation and development mechanisms of the LiFePO4 crystallites and their microstructures. Microwaveassisted wet chemical (MAWC) synthesis approach was employed in order to facilitate the evolvement of the nanostructures. The results reveal that the LiFePO4 crystallites were directly nucleated from amorphous precursors by competition against other low temperature phases, Li3PO4 and Fe3(PO4)2•8H2O. Growth of the crystalline LiFePO4 particles went through oriented attachment first, followed by revised Ostwald ripening and then recrystallization. While recrystallization played the role in growth of well crystallized particles, oriented attachment and revised Ostwald ripening were responsible for formation of the straight edge and plate-like shaped LiFePO4 particles comprised of nanoscale substructure. Oriented attachment and revised Ostwald ripening seemed to be also responsible for clustering the plate-like LiFePO4 particles into a high-level aggregated structure. The finding from this study indicates a hope for obtaining the hierarchical structure of LiFePO4 particles that could exhibit the both micro- and nano- scale characteristics. Future study is proposed to further advance the understanding of the structural development mechanisms, so that they can be manipulated for new LiFePO4 structures ideal for battery application.

The intent of the work presented in this thesis is to show that relativistic perturbations should be considered in the same manner as well known perturbations currently taken into account in planet-satellite systems. It is also the aim of this research to show that relativistic perturbations are comparable to standard perturbations in speciffc force magnitude and effects. This work would have been regarded as little more then a curiosity to most engineers until recent advancements in space propulsion methods { e.g. the creation of a artiffcial neutron stars, light sails, and continuous propulsion techniques. These cutting-edge technologies have the potential to thrust the human race into interstellar, and hopefully intergalactic, travel in the not so distant future. The relativistic perturbations were simulated on two orbit cases: (1) a general orbit and (2) a Molniya type orbit. The simulations were completed using Matlab's ODE45 integration scheme. The methods used to organize, execute, and analyze these simulations are explained in detail. The results of the simulations are presented in graphical and statistical form. The simulation data reveals that the speciffc forces that arise from the relativistic perturbations do manifest as variations in the classical orbital elements. It is also apparent from the simulated data that the speciffc forces do exhibit similar magnitudes and effects that materialize from commonly considered perturbations that are used in trajectory design, optimization, and maintenance. Due to the similarities in behavior of relativistic versus non-relativistic perturbations, a case is made for the development of a fully relativistic formulation for the trajectory design and trajectory optimization problems. This new framework would afford the possibility of illuminating new more optimal solutions to the aforementioned problems that do not arise in current formulations. This type of reformulation has already showed promise when the previously unknown Space Superhighways arose as a optimal solution when classical astrodynamics was reformulated using geometric mechanics.

Hall-effect thrusters (HETs) are compact electric propulsion devices with high specific impulse used for a variety of space propulsion applications. HET technology is well developed but the electron properties in the discharge are not completely understood, mainly due to the difficulty involved in performing accurate measurements in the discharge. Measurements of electron temperature and density have been performed using electrostatic probes, but presence of the probes can significantly disrupt thruster operation, and thus alter the electron temperature and density. While fast-probe studies have expanded understanding of HET discharges, a non-invasive method of measuring the electron temperature and density in the plasma is highly desirable. An alternative to electrostatic probes is a non-perturbing laser diagnostic technique that measures Thomson scattering from the plasma. Thomson scattering is the process by which photons are elastically scattered from the free electrons in a plasma. Since the electrons have thermal energy their motion causes a Doppler shift in the scattered photons that is proportional to their velocity. Like electrostatic probes, laser Thomson scattering (LTS) can be used to determine the temperature and density of free electrons in the plasma. Since Thomson scattering measures the electron velocity distribution function directly no assumptions of the plasma conditions are required, allowing accurate measurements in anisotropic and non-Maxwellian plasmas. LTS requires a complicated measurement apparatus, but has the potential to provide accurate, non-perturbing measurements of electron temperature and density in HET discharges. In order to assess the feasibility of LTS diagnostics on HETs non-invasive measurements of electron temperature and density in the near-field plume of a Hall thruster were performed using a custom built laser Thomson scattering diagnostic. Laser measurements were processed using a maximum likelihood estimation method and results were compared to conventional electrostatic double probe measurements performed at the same thruster conditions. Electron temperature was found to range from approximately 1 – 40 eV and density ranged from approximately 1.0 x 1017 m-3 to 1.3 x 1018 m-3 over discharge voltages from 250 to 450 V and mass flow rates of 40 to 80 SCCM using xenon propellant.
