The Lorentz-Dirac equation is not an unavoidable consequence of solely linear and angular momenta conservation for a point charge. It also requires an additional assumption concerning the elementary character of the charge. We here use a less restrictive elementarity assumption for a spinless charge and derive a system of conservation equations that are not properly the equation of motion because, as it contains an extra scalar variable, the future evolution of the charge is not determined. We show that a supplementary constitutive relation can be added so that the motion is determined and free from the troubles that are customary in the Lorentz-Dirac equation, i.e., preacceleration and runaways.

The first observation of the elusive Fe4+ charge state coming from the nuclear decay of 57Co3+ has been found in the Mössbauer emission spectra of 57Co:La2Li0.5Co0.5O4. A Ti-doped sample was prepared in order to show that the Fe4+ fraction can be conveniently monitored. Both results were predicted on the basis of the electronic energy-band scheme of these oxides.

All derivations of the one-dimensional telegraphers equation, based on the persistent random walk model, assume a constant speed of signal propagation. We generalize here the model to allow for a variable propagation speed and study several limiting cases in detail. We also show the connections of this model with anomalous diffusion behavior and with inertial dichotomous processes.

Laudisa (Found. Phys. 38:1110-1132, 2008) claims that experimental research on the class of non-local hidden-variable theories introduced by Leggett is misguided, because these theories are irrelevant for the foundations of quantum mechanics. I show that Laudisa's arguments fail to establish the pessimistic conclusion he draws from them. In particular, it is not the case that Leggett-inspired research is based on a mistaken understanding of Bell's theorem, nor that previous no-hidden-variable theorems already exclude Leggett's models. Finally, I argue that the framework of Bohmian mechanics brings out the importance of Leggett tests, rather than proving their irrelevance, as Laudisa supposes.

The Mehlich-1 (M-1) extractant and Monocalcium Phosphate in acetic acid (MCPa) have mechanisms for extraction of available P and S in acidity and in ligand exchange, whether of the sulfate of the extractant by the phosphate of the soil, or of the phosphate of the extractant by the sulfate of the soil. In clayey soils, with greater P adsorption capacity, or lower remaining P (Rem-P) value, which corresponds to soils with greater Phosphate Buffer Capacity (PBC), more buffered for acidity, the initially low pH of the extractants increases over their time of contact with the soil in the direction of the pH of the soil; and the sulfate of the M-1 or the phosphate of the MCPa is adsorbed by adsorption sites occupied by these anions or not. This situation makes the extractant lose its extraction capacity, a phenomenon known as loss of extraction capacity or consumption of the extractant, the object of this study. Twenty soil samples were chosen so as to cover the range of Rem-P (0 to 60 mg L-1). Rem-P was used as a measure of the PBC. The P and S contents available from the soil samples through M-1 and MCPa, and the contents of other nutrients and of organic matter were determined. For determination of loss of extraction capacity, after the rest period, the pH and the P and S contents were measured in both the extracts-soils. Although significant, the loss of extraction capacity of the acidity of the M-1 and MCPa extractants with reduction in the Rem-P value did not have a very expressive effect. A “linear plateau” model was observed for the M-1 for discontinuous loss of extraction capacity of the P content in accordance with reduction in the concentration of the Rem-P or increase in the PBC, suggesting that a discontinuous model should also be adopted for interpretation of available P of soils with different Rem-P values. In contrast, a continuous linear response was observed between the P variables in the extract-soil and Rem-P for the MCPa extractor, which shows increasing loss of extraction capacity of this extractor with an increase in the PBC of the soil, indicating the validity of the linear relationship between the available S of the soil and the PBC, estimated by Rem-P, as currently adopted.

Les enquêtes menées auprès des officines vaudoises en 1994 et 2003 avaient montré que les pharmacies étaient des partenaires importants dans le réseau de prise en charge des usagers de drogue par injection (UDI), en particulier en ce qui concerne la dispensation et le suivi des cures de méthadone. Elles avaient aussi mis en évidence les besoins de formation/information des pharmaciens et de leur personnel. La troisième vague de l'enquête pharmacie 2011 avait pour objectif : o de mesurer l'évolution de la remise de seringues par les pharmacies aux UDI o de repérer les lacunes éventuelles dans l'accès au matériel stérile du point de vue géographique o d'apprécier le rôle des pharmacies dans la remise de traitements de méthadone o d'identifier d'éventuels problèmes rencontrés dans ces deux activités (vente de seringues et dispensation de méthadone) o d'identifier les besoins en formation des pharmaciens et du personnel des pharmacies o d'identifier les actions qui favoriseraient une meilleure intégration des pharmacies dans le dispositif de prise en charge des personnes toxicodépendantes o de recueillir l'avis des pharmaciens sur la pose d'automates de distribution de seringues et sur la nécessité d'une extension de la remise de matériel stérile. Méthode L'enquête pharmacie 2011 comprend deux volets. Un premier volet quantitatif, sous la forme d'un questionnaire adressé à toutes les pharmacies du canton (n=248). Le taux de participation de 92% (n=227) est remarquable. Les analyses portent sur 220 questionnaires valides. Un second volet, qualitatif, permet de compléter les données statistiques. Many strategies for treating diseases require the delivery of drugs into the cell cytoplasm following internalization within endosomal vesicles. Thus, compounds triggered by low pH to disrupt membranes and release endosomal contents into the cytosol are of particular interest. Here, we report novel cationic lysine-based surfactants (hydrochloride salts of N¿- and N¿-acyl lysine methyl ester) that differ in the position of the positive charge and the length of the alkyl chain. Amino acid-based surfactants could be promising novel biomaterials in drug delivery systems, given their biocompatible properties and low cytotoxic potential. We examined their ability to disrupt the cell membrane in a range of pH values, concentrations and incubation times, using a standard hemolysis assay as a model of endosomal membranes. Furthermore, we addressed the mechanism of surfactant-mediated membrane destabilization, including the effects of each surfactant on erythrocyte morphology as a function of pH. We found that only surfactants with the positive charge on the ¿-amino group of lysine showed pH-sensitive hemolytic activity and improved kinetics within the endosomal pH range, indicating that the positive charge position is critical for pH-responsive behavior. Moreover, our results showed that an increase in the alkyl chain length from 14 to 16 carbon atoms was associated with a lower ability to disrupt cell membranes. Knowledge on modulating surfactant-lipid bilayer interactions may help us to develop more efficient biocompatible amino acid-based drug delivery devices.

ABSTRACT Tillage systems can influence C sequestration by changing aggregate formation and C distribution within the aggregate. This study was undertaken to explore the impact of no-tillage without straw (NT-S) and with straw (NT+S), and moldboard plow without straw (MP-S) and with straw (MP+S), on soil aggregation and aggregate-associated C after six years of double rice planting in a Hydragric Anthrosol in Guangxi, southwest of China. Soil samples of 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m layers were wet-sieved and divided into four aggregate-size classes, >2 mm, 2.00-0.25 mm, 0.25-0.053 and <0.053 mm, respectively, for measuring aggregate associated C and humic and fulvic acids. Results showed that the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock in bulk soil was 40.2-51.1 % higher in the 0.00-0.05 m layer and 11.3-17.0 % lower in the 0.05-0.20 m layer in NT system (NT+S and NT-S) compared to the MP system (MP+S and MP-S), respectively. However, no statistical difference was found across the whole 0.00-0.30 m layer. The NT system increased the proportion of >2 mm aggregate fraction and reduced the proportion of <0.053 mm aggregates in both 0.00-0.05 and 0.05-0.20 m layers. The SOC concentration, SOC stock and humic and fulvic acids within the >0.25 mm macroaggregate fraction also significantly increased in the 0.00-0.5 m layer in NT system. However, those within the 2.00-0.25 mm aggregate fraction were significantly reduced in the 0.05-0.200 m layer under NT system. Straw incorporation increased not only the SOC stock in bulk soil, but also the proportion of macroaggregate, aggregate associated with SOC and humic and fulvic acids concentration within the aggregate. The effect of straw on C sequestration might be dependent on the location of straw incorporation. In conclusion, the NT system increased the total SOC accumulation and humic and fulvic acids within macroaggregates, thus contributing to C sequestration in the 0.00-0.05 m layer.

Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is defined by absent or incomplete puberty and characterised biochemically by low levels of sex steroids, with low or inappropriately normal gonadotropin hormones. IHH is frequently accompanied by non-reproductive abnormalities, most commonly anosmia, which is present in 50-60% of cases and defines Kallmann syndrome. The understanding of IHH has undergone rapid evolution, both in respect of genetics and breadth of phenotype. Once considered in monogenic Mendelian terms, it is now more coherently understood as a complex genetic condition. Oligogenic and complex genetic-environmental interactions have now been identified, with physiological and environmental factors interacting in genetically susceptible individuals to alter the clinical course and phenotype. These potentially link IHH to ancient evolutionary pressures on the ancestral human genome.

Renal colic (RC) is a common problem in primary care practice. It is estimated that 5-12% of the general population will suffer once RC during his lifetime. The primary care physicians play a central role in the management of urolithiasis. This article summarizes the current recommendations in terms of renal colic emergency management: biological assessment, imaging, pain relief and specific treatment. The vast majority of patients only needs efficient antalgic treatment and an outpatient monitoring. A minimal assessment must however be undertaken to detect complicated RC that will require urgent treatment in urology department. The analysis of the stone after the crisis is crucial to set up a preventive treatment.

Rapport de synthèse Ce travail de thèse s'articule autour de l'importance de l'évaluation de la fonction vasculaire et des répercussions au niveau central, cardiaque, des perturbations du réseau vasculaire. Les maladies cardiovasculaires sont prédominantes dans notre société et causes de morbidité et mortalité importante. La mesure de la pression artérielle classique reste le moyen le plus utilisé pour suivre la santé des vaisseaux, mais ne reflète pas directement ce qui se passe au niveau du coeur. La tonométrie d'aplanation permet depuis quelques années de mesurer l'onde de pouls radial, et par le biais d'une fonction mathématique de transfert validée, il est possible d'en déduire la forme et Γ amplitude de l'onde de pouls central, donc de la pression aortique centrale. Cette dernière est un reflet bien plus direct de la post-charge cardiaque, et de nombreuses études cliniques actuelles s'intéressent à cette mesure pour stratifier le risque ou évaluer l'effet d'un traitement vasculaire. Toutefois, bien que cet outil soit de plus en plus utilisé, il est rarement précisé si la latéralité de la mesure joue un rôle, sachant que certaines propriétés des membres supérieurs peuvent être affectées par un usage préférentiel (masse musculaire, densité osseuse, diamètre des artères, capillarisation musculaire, et même fonction endothéliale). On a en effet observé que ces divers paramètre étaient tous augmentés sur un bras entraîné. Dès lors on peut se poser la question de l'influence de ces adaptations physiologiques sur la mesure indirecte effectuée par le biais du pouls radial. Nous avons investigué les deux membres supérieurs de sujets jeunes et sédentaires (SED), ainsi que ceux de sujets sportifs avec un développement fortement asymétrique des bras, soit des joueurs de tennis de haut niveau (TEN). Des mesures anthropométriques incluant la composition corporelle et la circonférence des bras et avant-bras ont montré que TEN présente une asymétrie hautement significative aux deux mesures entre le bras dominant (entraîné) et l'autre, ce qui est aussi présent pour la force de serrage (mesurée au dynamomètre de Jamar). L'analyse des courbes centrales de pouls ne montre aucune différence entre les deux membres dans chaque groupe, par contre on peut observer une différence entre SED et TEN, avec un index d'augmentation diastolique qui est 50 % plus élevé chez TEN. Les index d'augmentation systolique sont identiques dans les deux groupes. On peut retenir de cette étude la validité de la méthode de tonométrie d'aplanation quel que soit le bras utilisé (dominant ou non-dominant) et ce même si une asymétrie conséquente est présente. Ces données sont clairement nouvelles et permettent de s'affranchir de cette variable dans la mesure d'un paramètre cardiovasculaire dont l'importance est actuellement grandissante. Les différences d'index diastolique sont expliquées par la fréquence cardiaque et la vitesse de conduction de l'onde de pouls plus basses chez TEN, causant un retard diastolique du retour de l'onde au niveau central, phénomène précédemment bien décrit dans la littérature.
