View of Old Engineering Building from the South East

Originally one of four buildings on campus. Used as professor's house 1840-1877 (S. University where Clements Library stands). Used as Dental College 1877-1891; wing added on East 1891. In 1891, building enlarged to north and third story added. Entrance changed to West facade. Used by Engineering until 1922 when it was removed. After 1904, it was called the Old Engineering Building.

The Diamond -- Ferry Field

In 1906 intercollegiate activities shifted to north part of Ferry Field. Baseball diamond moved north to present site of Yost Field House. In 1923 with erection of Yost Field House baseball diamond moved west to its present location. In 1914 wooden stands from south side of football moved to diamond.

Statue of Franklin presented by Class of Seventy to the University of Michigan

Statue stood on west side of S. State St. and was the gift of the Class of 1870.

Learning statue at the Michigan Union

Image mounted on linen. Sculpture also known as "Scholar." Placed above entrance of Michigan Union facing toward campus. Photographer's log identifies men in image as "Pond and Murphy."

The University Hospital

Albert Kahn, architect. University Hospital, also called Old Main Hospital; had many additions; demolished 1989. Viewed from the southwest. Floors 7 and 8 have been added to main hospital.

Law Department Building, at the University of Michigan.

Jordan & Anderson, architects. Built 1863. Northwest corner of Diagonal on corner of State and North University. Served as Law School for sixty years; contained chapel until 1873 and library until 1883. Addition built in 1893 included tower.

The Law Building in June

An 1898 addition completely altered the exterior, removed the tower, and added a new south wing (Spier & Rohns, architect). Regents met in south wing until 1933. When Law moved to Hutchins Hall in 1933, building was renamed Haven Hall in honor of Erastus O. Haven, president, 1863-1869. Haven Hall became an LS&A building until it was destroyed by fire June 6, 1950.

West Quad and Union from the air

Located behind the Michigan Union bordering on Madison and Thompson Sts. The first unit was the Allen-Rumsey House (in commemoration of John Allen and Elisha Rumsey), constructed in 1937, and designed by Lane, Davenport & Meyer to coordinate with the addition to the Union, also being constructed in 1937. West Quadrangle was added in 1939, contained seven "houses," and is connected to the Union. Upon completion in 1939, the Allen-Rumsey unit became a part of West Quad.

The Newberry Residence

Kahn & Wilby, architects. Built in 1915. G.E. Christman Co., contractor. First dormitory for women opened for summer session 1915. Gift of Truman H. and John S. Newberry and Mrs. Henry Newberry Joy.

The Horace H. Rackham Educational Memorial, Detroit

Harley & Ellington, architects. W.E. Wood Co., contractor. Built from July 1940 to January 1942. Built jointly for the Engineering Society of Detroit and the University as an Extension Service facility in Detroit. Funded by the Horace H. and Mary A. Rackham Fund.
