In this paper, we report the fabrication of permeable metal-base organic transistors based on N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(1-naphthylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB)/C-60 heterojunction as both emitter and collector. By applying different polarities of voltage bias to the collector and the base, and input current to the emitter, the ambipolar behavior can be observed. The device demonstrates excellent common-base characteristics both in P-type and N-type modes with common-base current gains of 0.998 and 0.999, respectively.

A highly efficient and colour-stable three-wavelength white organic light-emitting diode with the structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/MoO3/N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis (1-naphthylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB)/4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP): bis(2,4-diphenylquinolyl-N,C-2') iridium( acetylacetonate) (PPQ)(2)Ir(acac)/NPB/p-bis(p-N,N-diphenyl-aminostyryl)benzene (DSA-Ph):2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl) anthracene (MADN)/tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (AlQ): 10-(2-Benzothiazolyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1,1,7,7-tetramethyl-1H,5H,11H-(1)-benzopyropyrano(6,7-8-i,j)quinolizin-11-one (C545T)/AlQ/LiF/Al is fabricated and characterized. A current efficiency of 12.3 cdA(-1) at an illumination-relevant brightness of 1000 cd m(-2) is obtained, which rolls off slightly to 10.3 cdA(-1) at a rather high brightness of 10 000 cd m(-2). We attribute this great reduction in the efficiency roll-off to the wise management of singlet and triplet excitons between emissive layers as well as the superior charge injection and diffusion balance in the device.

series of a donor-acceptor-donor type of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent chromophores based on [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline (TQ) as an electron acceptor and triphenylamine as an electron donor are synthesized and characterized. By introducing pendent phenyl groups or changing the pi-conjugation length in the TQ core, we tuned tile energy levels of these chromophores, resulting in the NIR emission in a range from 784 to 868 nm. High thermal stability and glass transition temperatures allow these chromophores to be used as dopant emitters, which can be processed by vapor deposition for the fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) having the multilayered structure of ITO/MoO3/NPB/Alq(3):dopant emitter/BCP/Alq(3)/LiF/Al. The electroluminescence spectra of the devices based on these new chromophores cover a range from 748 to 870 nm. With 2 wt % of dopant 1, the LED device shows an exclusive NIR emission at 752 nm with the external quantum efficiency (EQE) as high as 1.12% over a wide range of current density (e.g., around 200 mA cm(-2)).

novel compound (BCBP) based on the modification of a well-known host material 4,4'-(bis(9-carbazolyl))biphenyl (CBP) through arylmethylene bridge linkage was synthesized, and fully characterized. Its thermal, electrochemical, electronic absorption and photoluminescent properties were studied. A high glass transition temperature (T-g) of 173 degrees C is observed for BCBP due to the introduction of the bridged structure, remarkably contrasting with a low T-g of 62 degrees C for CBP. Furthermore, the bridged structure enhances the conjugation and raises the HOMO energy, thus facilitating hole-injection and leading to a low turn-on voltage in an electroluminescent device. With the device structure of ITO/MoO3/NPB/Ir complex: BCBP/BCP/Alq(3)/LiF/Al, maximum power efficiencies of 41.3 lm/W and 6.3 lm/W for green- and blue-emitting OLED were achieved, respectively.

The synthesis, isomeric studies, and photophysical characterization of a series of multifunctional cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes containing a fluoro- or methyl-substituted 2[3-(N-plienylcarbazolyl)]pyridine molecular framework are presented. All of the complexes are thermally stable solids and highly efficient electrophosphors. The optical, electrochemical, photo-, and electrophosphorescence traits of these iridium phosphors have been studied in terms of the electronic nature and coordinating site of the aryl or pyridyl ring substituents. The correlation between the functional properties of these phosphors and the results of density functional theory calculations was made. Arising from the propensity of the electron-rich carbazolyl group to facilitate hole injection/transport, the presence of such a moiety can increase the highest-occupied molecular orbital levels and improve the charge balance in the resulting complexes relative to the parent phosphor with 2-phenylpyridine ligands. Remarkably, the excited-state properties can be manipulated through ligand and substituent effects that allow the tuning of phosphorescence energies from bluish green to deep red.

In this work we present a permeable base transistor consisting of a 60 nm thick N,N'diphenyl-N,N'-bis(1-naphthylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine layer or a 40 nm thick 2,6-diphenyl-indenofluorene layer as the emitter, a CalAl/Ca multilayer as the metal base, and p-Si as collector. In the base, the Ca layers are 5 nm thick and the Al layer was varied between 10 and 40 nm. the best results obtained with a 20 nm thick layer. The devices present common-base current gain with both organic layer and silicon acting as emitter, but there is only observable common-emitter current gain when the organic semiconductor acts as emitter. The obtained common-emitter current gain, similar to 2, is independent on collector-emitter voltage, base current and organic emitter in a reasonable wide interval. Air exposure or annealing of the base is necessary to achieve these characteristics, indicating that an oxide layer is beneficial to proper device operation.

A series of carbazole derivatives was synthesized and their electrical and photophysical properties were investigated. It is shown that the triplet energy levels of these hosts are higher than that of the most popular blue phosphorescent material iridium(III) bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato-N,C-2'] picolinate (FIrpic) and the most extensively used phosphorescent host material 4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP). These new host materials also showed good thermal stability and high glass transition temperatures (T-g) ranging from 78 to 115 degrees C as the linkage group between the carbazoles was altered. Photophysical measurements indicate that the energy transfer between these new hosts and FIrpic is more efficient than that between CBP and FIrpic. Devices incorporating these novel carbazole derivatives as the host material doped with FIrpic were fabricated with the configurations of ITO/NPB (40 nm)/host:FIrpic (30 nm)/BCP (15 nm)/AlQ (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (150 nm). High efficiencies (up to 13.4 cd/A) have been obtained when 1,4-bis (4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)cyclohexane (CBPCH) and bis(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl) ether (CBPE) were used as the host, respectively.

By fusing an electron-deficient ring system with the phenyl ring of a 2-phenylpyridine (ppy)-type ligand, a new and synthetically versatile strategy for the phosphorescence color tuning of cyclometalated iridium(III) and platinum(II) metallophosphors has been established. Two robust red electrophosphors with enhanced electron-injection/electron-transporting features were prepared by using an electron-trapping fluoren-9-one chromophore in the ligand design. The thermal, photophysical, redox and electrophosphorescent properties of these complexes are reported. These exciting results can be attributed to a switch of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character of the transition from the pyridyl groups in the traditional Ir-III or Pt-II ppy-type complexes to the electron-deficient ring core, and the spectral assignments corroborate well with the electrochemical data as well as the timedependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The electron-withdrawing character of the fused ring results in much more stable MLCT states, inducing a substantial red-shift of the triplet emission energy from yellow to red for the Ir-III complex and even green to red for the PtII counterpart.

The GGA triplet repeats are widely dispersed throughout eukaryotic genomes. (GGA)n or (GGT)n oligonucleotides can interact with double-stranded DNA containing (GGA:CCT)n to form triple-stranded DNA. The effects of 8 divalent metal ions (3 alkaline-earth metals and 5 transition metals) on formation of these purine-rich triple-helix DNA were investigated by electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-MS). In the absence of metal ions, no triplex but single-strand, duplex, and purine homodimer ions were observed in mass spectra. The triple-helix DNA complexes were observed only in the presence of certain divalent ions. The effects of different divalent cations on the formation of purine-rich triplexes were compared. Transition-metal ions, especially Co2+ and Ni2+, significantly boost the formation of triple-helix DNA, whereas alkaline-earth metal ions have no positive effects on triplex formation. In addition, Ba2+ is notably beneficial to the formation of homodimer instead of triplex.

The synthesis and photophysical studies of several multifunctional phosphorescent iridium(III) cyclometalated complexes consisting of the hole-transporting carbazole and fluorene-based 2-phenylpyridine moieties are reported. All of them are isolated as thermally and morphological stable amorphous solids. Extension of the pi-conjugation through incorporation of electron- pushing carbazole units to the fluorene fragment leads to bathochromic shifts in the emission profile, increases the highest oc- cupied molecular orbital levels and improves the charge balance in the resulting complexes because of the propensity of the carbazole unit to facilitate hole transport. These iridium-based triplet emitters give a strong orange phosphorescence light at room temperature with relatively short lifetimes in the solution phase. The photo- and electroluminescence properties of these phosphorescent carbazolylfluorene-functionalized metalated complexes have been studied in terms of the coordinating position of carbazole to the fluorene unit. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using these complexes as the solution-processed emissive layers have been fabricated which show very high efficiencies even without the need for the typical hole-transporting layer.I These orange-emitting devices can produce a maximum current efficiency of similar to 30 cd A(-1) corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of similar to 10 % ph/el (photons per electron) and a power efficiency of similar to 14 Im W-1.

A new dysprosium complex Dy(PM)(3)(TP)(2) [where PM = 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-isobutyryl-5-pyrazolone and TP = triphenyl phosphine oxide] was synthesized, and its single-crystal structure was also studied. Its photophysical properties were studied by absorption spectra, emission spectra, fluorescence quantum efficiency, and decay time of the f-f transition of the Dy3+ ion. In addition, the antenna effect was introduced to discuss the energy transfer mechanism between the ligand and the central Dy3+ ion. Finally, a series of devices with various structures was fabricated to investigate the electroluminescence (EL) performances of Dy(PM)(3)(TP)(2). The best device with the structure ITO/CuPc 15 nm/Dy complex 70 nm/BCP 20 nm/AlQ 30 nm/LiF 1 nm/Al 100 nm exhibits a maximum brightness of 524 cd/m(2), a current efficiency of 0.73 cd/A, and a power efficiency of 0.16 lm/W, which means that a great improvement in the performances of the device was obtained as compared to the results reported in published literature. Being identical to the PL spectrum, the EL spectrum of the complex also shows characteristic emissions of the Dy3+ ion, which consist of a yellow band at 572 nm and a blue emission band at 480 nm corresponding to the F-4(9/2)-H-6(13/2) and F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2) transition of the Dy3+ ion, respectively. Consequently, an appropriate tuning of the blue/yellow intensity ratio can be presumed to accomplish a white luminescent emission.

Several organic electroluminescent devices with different device structures were fabricated based on an organosamarium complex Sm(HFNH)(3)phen[HFNH=4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6-heptafluoro-l-(2-naphthvl)hexane-1, 3-dione; phen=1, 10-phenanthroline] as emitter. Their electroluminescent properties were investigated in detail. Although the devices with the optimal structure ITO/TPD (50nm)/ Sm(HFNH)(3)phen (xwt%):CBP (50nm)/BCP (20nm)/AIQ (30nm)/LiF (1 nm),/Al (200nm) show high brightness (more than 400cd/m(2)) and high current efficiency (about 1 cd/A), there are emissions from CBP, BCP and even from AIQ existing in the electroluminescence (EL) spectra besides emission from Sm(HFNH)(3)Phen. The reason to this was discussed. The device with the structure ITO/TPD (50 nm)/ Sm(HFNH)(3)phen (50 nm)/AIQ (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (200 nm) exhibits the maximum brightness of 118 cd/m(2) and current efficiency of 0.029 cd/A, and shows emissions from AIQ and Sm(HFNH)(3)phen at high voltages. However, with the BCP hole-block layer added, the device [ITO/TPD (50 nm)/Sm(HFNH)(3)phen (50 nm)/BCP (20 nm)/AIQ (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (200 nm)] exhibits pure Sm3+ emission in 2 the EL spectra even at high voltages, with the maximum current efficiency of 0.29cd/A and brightness of 82cd/m(2)

We demonstrated high-efficiency red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing a europium complex, Eu (III) tris( thenoyltrifluoroacetone) 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Eu(TTA)(3)(Tmphen)), as an emitter and a blue electrophosphorescent complex, Iridium ( III) bis[4,6-di-fluorophenyl-pyridinato-N,C-2] picolinate (FIrpic), as an assistant dopant codoped into 4,4-N, N-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP) host as an emissive layer. A pure red electroluminescence (EL) only from Eu3+ ions at 612 nm with a full width at half maximum of 3 nm was observed and the EL efficiency was significantly enhanced. The maximum EL efficiency reached 7.9 cd A(-1) at 0.01 mA cm(-2) current density, which is enhanced by 2.8 times compared with electrophosphorescence-undoped devices. The large improvements are attributed to energy transfer assistance effects of FIrpic, indicating a promising method for obtaining efficient red OLEDs based on rare-earth complexes.

Distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) with different reflection wavelengths were designed, and were used to fabricate microcavity organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (Alq(3)) as the emitter and N, N'-di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N, N'-diphenyl-benzidine (NPB) as the hole-transporting layer. The microcavity was composed of DBR dielectric mirror and metal electrode aluminum (Al) mirror. Some effects of vertical optical Fabry-Perot microcavity on spontaneous emission in OLEDs were investigated. Spectral narrowing, enhancement of emitting intensity and anglular dependence of emission were observed due to the microcavity effect. It was found experimentally that the utilization of DBR is a better method to adjust the emissive mode in the resonant cavity in OLEDs well. Thus the realization of different color light emission becomes possible by the combination of carefully designed microcavity and electroluminescent organic semiconductors in a single LED.
