Birth defects are a leading cause of infant mortality in the United States. About one in 33 births in the United States is diagnosed with birth defects. Common birth defects include neural tube defects, Down syndrome and oral clefts. The present study focused on oral clefts. ^ Oral clefts refer to the malformation of lip, mouth or both. Birth prevalence of oral clefts in Texas is about 11 per 10,000 births. Etiologically, oral clefts have been classified into two groups, cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P) and isolated cleft palate (CP). In spite of their high prevalence and clinical significance, the etiology of oral clefts in humans has not been well understood. Though a number of risk factors have been identified in epidemiological studies, most of them do not explain the majority of the cases. The need to identify novel risk factors associated with oral clefts provided the motivation for this study. The present study focused on maternal exposure to several hazardous air pollutants. A common subgroup of hazardous air pollutants is the volatile organic compounds found in petroleum derivatives. Four important hydrocarbons in this group are benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTEX). ^ The specific aim of this study was to evaluate the association between maternal exposure to environmental levels of BTEX and oral clefts among offspring in Texas for the period 1999-2008. ^ A case-control study design was used to assess if maternal exposure to BTEX increased the risk of oral clefts. The Texas Birth Defects Registry provided data on cases of non-syndromic oral clefts delivered in Texas during the period 1999-2008. Census tract level maternal exposure to BTEX concentrations were obtained from the Hazardous Air Pollutant Exposure Model (HAPEM) developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Unconditional logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between maternal exposure to BTEX levels and risk of oral clefts in offspring. ^ In the selected population, mothers who had high estimated exposure to any of the BTEX compounds were not more likely to deliver an offspring with oral clefts. Future research efforts will focus on additional birth defects and thorough assessment of additional potential confounders.^

The 23rd Annual Biochemical Engineering Symposium was held at the University of Oklahoma on April 17, 1993. The objectives of the symposium were to provide 1) a forum for informal discussion of biochemical engineering research being carried at the participating universities and 2) an opportunity for students to present and publish their work. Thirteen papers presented at the symposium are included in the proceedings. Because final publication usually takes place in refereed journals, the articles included here are typically brief and often cover work in progress. The program of the symposium and a list of participants are included in the proceedings. ContentsA Low-Cost Bioreactor Strategy for RNA Synthesis, H. Anthony Marble, Eleni Chrisikos, and Robert H. C2-C8 hydrocarbon concentrations (about 35 compounds identified, including saturated, aromatic, and olefinic compounds) from 38 shipboard sealed, deep-frozen core samples of Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 585 (East Mariana Basin) and 586 (Ontong-Java Plateau) were determined by a gas stripping-thermovaporization method. Total concentrations, which represent the hydrocarbons dissolved in the pore water and adsorbed on the mineral surfaces of the sediment, vary from 20 to 630 ng/g of rock at Site 585 (sub-bottom depth range 332-868 m). Likewise, organic-carbon normalized yields range from 3*10**4 to 9*10**5 ng/g Corg, indicating that the organic matter is still in the initial, diagenetic evolutionary stage. The highest value (based on both rock weight and organic carbon) is measured in an extremely organic-carbon-poor sample of Lithologic Subunit VB (Core 585-30). In this unit (504-550 m) several samples with elevated organic-carbon contents and favorable kerogen quality including two thin "black-shale" layers deposited at the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary (not sampled for this study) were encountered. We conclude from a detailed comparison of light hydrocarbon compositions that the Core 585-30 sample is enriched in hydrocarbons of the C2-C8 molecular range, particularly in gas compounds, which probably migrated from nearby black-shale source layers. C2-C8 hydrocarbon yields in Site 586 samples (sub-bottom depth range 27-298 m) did not exceed 118 ng/g of dry sediment weight (average 56 ng/g), indicating the immaturity of these samples.

A series of C2-C8 hydrocarbons (including saturated, aromatic, and olefinic compounds) from deep-frozen core samples taken during DSDP Leg 75 (Holes 530A and 532) were analyzed by a combined hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization method. Concentrations representing both hydrocarbons dissolved in the pore water and adsorbed on the mineral surfaces vary in Hole 530A from about 10 to 15,000 ng/g of dry sediment weight depending on the lithology (organic-carbon-lean calcareous oozes versus "black shales"). Likewise, the organic-carbon-normalized C2-C8 hydrocarbon concentrations vary from 3,500 to 93,100 ng/g Corg, reflecting drastic differences in the hydrogen contents and hence the hydrocarbon potential of the kerogens. The highest concentrations measured of nearly 10**5 ng/g Corg are about two orders of magnitude below those usually encountered in Type-II kerogen-bearing source beds in the main phase of petroleum generation. Therefore, it was concluded that Hole 530A sediments, even at 1100 m depth, are in an early stage of evolution. The corresponding data from Hole 532 indicated lower amounts (3,000-9,000 ng/g Corg), which is in accordance with the shallow burial depth and immaturity of these Pliocene/late Miocene sediments. Significant changes in the light hydrocarbon composition with depth were attributed either to changes in kerogen type or to maturity related effects. Redistribution pheonomena, possibly the result of diffusion, were recognized only sporadically in Hole 530A, where several organic-carbon lean samples were enriched by migrated gaseous hydrocarbons. The core samples from Hole 530A were found to be severely contaminated by large quantities of acetone, which is routinely used as a solvent during sampling procedures on board Glomar Challenger.

Sediments from the Baja California Continental Margin Transect - Sites 474 and 476 - showed small amounts of C2-C8 hydrocarbons and functionalized compounds (alkenes) typical of organic-rich, Recent, cold (<30°C) marine sediments. In contrast, some samples from Sites 477, 478, 479, and Hole 481A in the Guaymas Basin, an active spreading center, showed the characteristics of thermally generated hydrocarbons. These include an increase (sometimes exponential) in amount and diversity of C2-C8 hydrocarbons and a decrease in alkenes in more thermally mature sediments. The results indicate that the injection of basaltic sills has minimal effect on C2-C8 hydrocarbon generation except in the immediate vicinity of the sill. The absence of light hydrocarbons close to the hottest sills suggests that the compounds distill away as they are formed in these areas of very active hydrothermal circulation. A sample of young sediment exposed to very high temperatures (>300°C) from deeper thermal sources at the hottest site, 477, showed a very limited hydrocarbon distribution, including primarily ethane, benzene, and toluene, together with smaller amounts of propane and butane.

The distribution of C1 to C8 hydrocarbons in sediment samples from DSDP Leg 75, Hole 530A, indicates that significant amounts of methane and ethane have migrated from organic-rich to organic-lean shales in close proximity. Most compounds larger than ethane are not migrating out of black shales, where they occur in high concentrations. These results lead to a general model for assessing migration. In addition, three shale types are identified on the basis of organic carbon and pyrolysis products and patterns.

Volatile C1-C7 components in sediments were examined for Japan Trench DSDP Sites 438, 439, 435, 440, 434 and 436, proceeding from west to east. Levels of all components are lowest in the highly fractured sediments of Sites 440 and 434. A number of alkenes, furans, and sulfur compounds were detected in concentrations higher than noted in any other DSDP sediments examined to date. The types, amounts, and specificity of occurrence are similar to those for 1-meter gravity cores we have examined which bear a significant biological imprint. Site 436 shows high levels of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as olefins, including traces of dimethycyclopentanes and the highest level of cyclohexene detected in any DSDP sediment we have examined to date. The results from Site 436 were unexpected, considering the low organic-carbon content, absence of biogenic methane, and evidence of an aerobic depositional environment at this site.

Core samples taken during Leg 121 drilling aboard the JOIDES Resolution in the central Indian Ocean were analyzed for their low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon contents. Forty-three samples from the Broken Ridge and 39 samples from the Ninetyeast Ridge drill sites, deep-frozen on board immediately after recovery, were studied by a dynamic headspace technique (hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization). Light hydrocarbons (saturated and olefinic) with two to four carbon atoms, and toluene as a selected aromatic compound, were identified. Total C2-C4 saturated hydrocarbon yields vary considerably from virtually zero in a Paleogene calcareous ooze from Hole 757B to nearly 600 nanogram/gram of dry-weight sediment (parts per billion) in a Cretaceous claystone from Hole 758A. An increase of light-hydrocarbon yields with depth, and hence with sediment temperature, was observed from Hole 758A samples down to a depth of about 500 meters below seafloor. Despite extreme data scatter due to lithological changes over this depth interval, this increased yield indicates the onset of temperature-controlled hydrocarbon formation reactions. Toluene contents are also extremely variable (generally between 10 and 100 ppb) and reach more than 300 ppb in two samples of tuffaceous lithology (Sections 121-755A-17R-4 and 121-758A-48R-4). As for the saturated hydrocarbons, there was also an increase of toluene yields with increasing depth in Hole 758A.

During the DRIVE (Diurnal and Regional Variability of Halogen Emissions) ship campaign we investigated the variability of the halogenated very short-lived substances (VSLS) bromoform (CHBr3), dibromomethane (CH2Br2) and methyl iodide (CH3I) in the marine atmospheric boundary layer in the eastern tropical and subtropical North Atlantic Ocean during May/June 2010. The highest VSLS mixing ratios were found near the Mauritanian coast and close to Lisbon (Portugal). With backward trajectories we identified predominantly air masses from the open North Atlantic with some coastal influence in the Mauritanian upwelling area, due to the prevailing NW winds. The maximum VSLS mixing ratios above the Mauritanian upwelling were 8.92 ppt for bromoform, 3.14 ppt for dibromomethane and 3.29 ppt for methyl iodide, with an observed maximum range of the daily mean up to 50% for bromoform, 26% for dibromomethane and 56% for methyl iodide. The influence of various meteorological parameters - such as wind, surface air pressure, surface air and surface water temperature, humidity and marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) height - on VSLS concentrations and fluxes was investigated. The strongest relationship was found between the MABL height and bromoform, dibromomethane and methyl iodide abundances. Lowest MABL heights above the Mauritanian upwelling area coincide with highest VSLS mixing ratios and vice versa above the open ocean. Significant high anti-correlations confirm this relationship for the whole cruise. We conclude that especially above oceanic upwelling systems, in addition to sea-air fluxes, MABL height variations can influence atmospheric VSLS mixing ratios, occasionally leading to elevated atmospheric abundances. This may add to the postulated missing VSLS sources in the Mauritanian upwelling region (Quack et al., 2007).

Small amounts of C1-C8 hydrocarbons were detected in continental rise sediments from DSDP Site 603. Organiccarbon- lean sections contained only C1-C3 compounds believed to have migrated from organic-carbon-rich sections. Heavier (C4-C8) hydrocarbons were found only in organic-carbon-rich sections. Restricted and sporadic distribution of C4-C6 compounds in 0-1100 m sub-bottom sediments suggest low-temperature (<20°C) biological/chemical generation processes. Increased C4-C8 concentrations and complexity, including unusually high levels of xylene, were detected in two deeper Cretaceous sections (603-34-2, 134 cm and 603-81-3, 120 cm). This behavior, which was not observed in 17 other samples from sub-bottom depths greater than 1100 m, is similar to that observed in immature surface sediments from the geothermally active Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California) area.
