The Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system has been one of the most studied superconducting ceramic materials for industry applications. The most of the studies with this aim are on silver/ceramic composites, due to the benefits and great compatibility of this metal with the oxide. Tapes made by the powder in tube (PIT) method have been successfully tested in pilot power plants in many countries but in Brazil. In this paper, 5, 10, and 20-wt% silver powders are introduced to compose the core of the tape along with the Bi:2212 ceramic powder. The results of electrical experiments are compared with those made with no silver addition Ag tapes. The best current density, at 60 K and no applied magnetic field, was found for the 10-wt% silver proportion, doubling the value obtained for the tape with no silver in the core.

The addition of two compounds, calcium silicate and calcium zirconate was tested, in the preparation of Bi: 2212 silver sheathed wires by powder-in-tube method, which were successfully tested previously in processing chips. The wires were treated in an atmosphere of O2/Ar using partial melting method. The characterizations were structural and on their electrical and magnetic properties. As the results, transition temperatures were higher than the expected for this stage, ranged from 105K (BSCCO880) to 116K (+Si883). The critical current densities encountered in transport and magnetization measurements were improved in comparison with the wires without addition.

Tape Casting proved to be an effective method for the production of thick films of CeO2 pure and doped with La. For this study, the nanoparticles used to form the slurry were synthesizes by the H-M method, at 100°C for 8 minutes, using KOH mineralizer. The slurry was made in aqueous solvent, requiring optimal control of surroundings conditions so that the produced tape has conditions to be studied. However, there's no toxicity or flammability in the film made by such solvent, being pleasing to the environment. The structural, optical and electrical properties of the films obtained by the Tape Casting process were studied by the methods of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, specific surface area, Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and voltage-current measures, varying the electric field and frequency. From the results obtained by laboratory experiments, based on the literature, it was possible to reveal and understand some CeO2 features pure and doped with La

The use of a photodegradable tape was evaluated on 'Valencia' sweet orange nursery trees budded both on Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo in a greenhouse in Bebedouro-SP, Brazil, from September to November 2009. On both rootstocks three wrapping procedures were evaluated: i) conventional polyethylene tape wrapped around the bud eye; ii) photodegradable tape wrapped around the bud eye, and iii) photodegradable tape wrapped around the graft junction without covering the bud eye. The following variables were measured: time spent for wrapping, percentage of bud sprouting, length and stem diameter of the scion shoot, and percentage of commercially valuable nursery trees. The trial was conducted following a randomized complete block design, with six treatments, four replications and 12 trees per plot. The use of photodegradable tape, with or without covering the bud eye, anticipated bud sprouting; despite of the longer time spent with wrapping when the photodegradable tape was used. Plants grafted onto the less vigorous Swingle citrumelo rootstock showed lower bud sprout percentages when the bud eye was covered with the photodegradable tape.

The spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique, by using a compacting pressure of 50 MPa, was used to consolidate pre-reacted powders of Bi1.65Pb0.35Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta (Bi-2223). The influence of the consolidation temperature, T-D, on the structural and electrical properties has been investigated and compared with those of a reference sample synthesized by the traditional solid-state reaction method and subjected to the same compacting pressure. From the X-ray diffraction patterns, performed in both powder and pellet samples, we have found that the dominant phase is the Bi-2223 in all samples but traces of the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) were identified. Their relative density were similar to 85% of the theoretical density and the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, rho(T), indicated that increasing T-D results in samples with low oxygen content because the SPS is performed in vacuum. Features of the rho(T) data, as the occurrence of normal-state semiconductor-like behavior of rho(T) and the double resistive superconducting transition, are consistent with samples comprised of grains with shell-core morphology in which the shell is oxygen deficient. The SPS samples also exhibited superconducting critical current density at 77 K, J(c)(77K), between 2 and 10A/cm(2), values much smaller than similar to 22A/cm(2) measured in the reference sample. Reoxygenation of the SPS samples, post-annealed in air at different temperatures and times, was found to improve their microstructural and transport properties. Besides the suppression of the Bragg peaks belonging to the Bi-2212 phase, the superconducting properties of the post-annealed samples and particularly J(c)(77K) were comparable or better than those corresponding to the reference sample. Post-annealed samples at 750 degrees C for 5min exhibited J(c)(77K) similar to 130A/cm(2) even when uniaxially pressed at only 50 MPa. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. This paper presents an experimental study on two-phase flow patterns and pressure drop of R134a inside a 15.9 mm ID tube containing twisted-tape inserts. Experimental results were obtained in a horizontal test section for twisted-tape ratios of 3, 4, 9 and 14, mass velocities ranging from 75 to 250 kg/m(2) s and saturation temperatures of 5 and 15 degrees C. An unprecedented discussion on two-phase flow patterns inside tubes containing twisted-tape inserts is presented and the flow pattern effects on the frictional pressure drop are carefully discussed. Additionally, a new method to predict the frictional pressure drop during two-phase flow inside tubes containing twisted-tape inserts is proposed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Adhesive tape is commonly used in crimes and is often the subject of forensic evaluation. DNA analysis of adhesive tape can provide DNA profiles of suspects. The object of this study was to evaluate the applicability of DNA analysis on adhesive tape samples in forensic casework. We retrospectively reviewed all cases involving adhesive tape or similar items received by our institute for DNA analysis during the past 11 years. From 100 forensic cases reviewed, 150 adhesive tape samples were examined. A total of 98 DNA profiles were obtained from these samples. Sixty-two of the profiles provided feasible case-relevant information. In conclusion, DNA profiling of adhesive tape samples can be useful in a variety of forensic cases.
