The Food Assistance Monthly Participation Report is a monthly summary of Food Assistance program participation, Statewide and for each Iowa county. Breakouts are reported for participants also in the FIP program, those only receiving Food Assistance, and those that are receiving economic assistance under other programs (primarily Medicaid). Working with Iowans building a culture of conservation, Program Summary, November 2008

Over 94% of Iowa ’ s land is held in private ownership, and the programs of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Division of Soil Conservation (IDALS-DSC) have been established to work with these landowners. Over 90% of the landscape is used for agricultural production so much of our focus is in rural communities, but we haven’t overlooked the importance of land management in urban areas. It is crucial to understanding of both conservation and hydrology issues, that what happens on the landscape has immense consequences to the environmental health of our state and the quality of life we enjoy. IDALS-DSC is striving to integrate our programs with other agencies and local concerns to improve water and local concerns to improve water and soil quality throughout the state and nation.

2006 Vineyard Survey Summary, 2006

Survey Methodology: The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Bureau of Horticulture provided USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Iowa Field office with a complete list of apple and grape growers expected to be in operation. These operations were mailed a questionnaire and a telephone follow-up of non-respondents was conducted. The survey data was edited for reasonableness, and then summarized using statistical software. There were 236 operators who reported they did own, lease or operate a grape vineyard in 2006. The same operators reported 538 acres of grapes.

2006 Winery Survey Summary, 2006

Survey Purpose: The purpose of the survey was to measure the grape consumption, production, and expected needs by cultivar. Survey Methodology: The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Bureau of Horticulture provided USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Iowa Field office with a complete list of wineries expected to be in operation. The wineries were mailed a questionnaire and a telephone follow-up of non-respondents was conducted. The survey had an 87 percent response rate. The survey data was edited for reasonableness, and then summarized using statistical software.

Iowa Annual Weather Summary, 2008

General Summary. Temperatures over the past year averaged 45.8º or 2.0º below normal while precipitation totaled 43.79 inches or 9.71 inches above normal. This ranks as the 11th coolest and 4th wettest year among 136 years of state records. The last cooler year came in 1996 while only 1993 (48.22”), 1881 (44.16”) and 1902 (44.04”) brought more precipitation. The previous year of 2007 now ranks fifth wettest year (43.35”).
