Long-term settlement of tunnels has caused concerns about its influence on tunnel safety and serviceability. Aiming to investigate the long-term behaviour of tunnels against the background of Shanghai metro line, two cases of centrifuge modelling were conducted, with efforts to expose the mechanism affecting the consolidation of the ground. Evenly layered ground and transitional ground strata were set for each case separately and the settlement, lining load and pore water pressure were checked against elapsed time up to 20 years. The results verified some previous findings concerning the settlement and lining load development trend, however, it was also shown that the transitional ground made the tunnel response more complicated. The research is expected to provide some basis for further research on other affecting factors, such as lining permeability. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Construction industry is a sector that is renowned for the slow uptake of new technologies. This is usually due to the conservative nature of this sector that relies heavily on tried and tested and successful old business practices. However, there is an eagerness in this industry to adopt Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies to capture and record accurate information about a building project. But vast amounts of information and knowledge about the construction process is typically hidden within informal social interactions that take place in the work environment. In this paper we present a vision where smartphones and tablet devices carried by construction workers are used to capture the interaction and communication between workers in the field. Informal chats about decisions taken in the field, impromptu formation of teams, identification of key persons for certain tasks, and tracking the flow of information across the project community, are some pieces of information that could be captured by employing social sensing in the field. This information can not only be used during the construction to improve the site processes but it can also be exploited by the end user during maintenance of the building. We highlight the challenges that need to be overcome for this mobile and social sensing system to become a reality. © 2012 ACM.

The paper presents hydraulic conductivity, unconfined compression strength (UCS) and triaxial test results of an 11 year old slag-cement-bentonite (CB) cut-off wall material and identifies factors affecting their long-term performance. The laboratory tests were performed on three types of CB samples ranging from contaminated block field samples to uncontaminated laboratory cast samples. The results showed that hydraulic conductivity reduces till 3 years and UCS increases till 90 days, but there after it remains constant till 11 years of age. The mean hydraulic conductivity and UCS values of block field samples are inferior and have large variability than laboratory cured samples. Such variations are mainly because of heterogeneity caused by aggressive environment and impurities within the specimen. Consolidated undrained triaxial test found that under an effective confining pressure of less than 200 kPa, tension failure occurred since the minor principal stress dropped to zero value at failure. The research outcome is useful for understanding future liability of CB wall and improving their design. © 2009 IOS Press.

An innovative technique based on optical fibre sensing that allows continuous strain measurement has recently been introduced in structural health monitoring. Known as Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR), this distributed optical fibre sensing technique allows measurement of strain along the full length (up to 10km) of a suitably installed optical fibre. Examples of recent implementations of BOTDR fibre optic sensing in piles are described in this paper. Two examples of distributed optical fibre sensing in piles are demonstrated using different installation techniques. In a load bearing pile, optical cables were attached along the reinforcing bars by equally spaced spot gluing to measure the axial response of pile to ground excavation induced heave and construction loading. Measurement of flexural behaviour of piles is demonstrated in the instrumentation of a secant piled wall where optical fibres were embedded in the concrete by simple endpoint clamping. Both methods have been verified via laboratory works. © 2009 IOS Press.

Interbedded layers of glacial deposits and marine or glacimarine clay layers are a common feature of offshore sediment. Typically, offshore marine clays are lightly overconsolidated sensitive clay. Some case histories on submarine landslides show that the slip surface passes through these marine clay layers. In this paper a model is proposed for post-peak strain softening behavior of marine sensitive clay. The slope failure mechanism is examined using the concept of shear band propagation. It is shown that shear band propagation and post-peak stress-strain behavior of clay layers are two major factors in submarine slope stability analysis. There are several reasons for monitoring of underground structures and they have already been discussed many times, e.g. from the view of ageing or state after accidental event like flooding of Prague metro in 2002. Monitoring of Prague metro is realized in the framework of international research project sponsored by ESF-S3T. The monitoring methods used in Prague are either classical one or new or developing one. The reason for different monitoring methods is the different precision of each method and also for cross-checking between them and their evaluation. Namely we use convergence, tiltmetres, crackmetres, geophysical methods, laser scanning, computer vision and finally installation of MEMS monitoring devices. In the paper more details of each method and obtained results will be presented. The monitoring methods are complemented by wireless data collection and transfer for real-time monitoring. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.
