Impact detection in aeronautical structures allows predicting their future reliability and performance. An impact can produce microscopic fissures that could evolve into fractures or even the total collapse of the structure, so it is important to know the location and severity of each impact. For this purpose, optical fibers with Bragg gratings are used to analyze each impact and the vibrations generated by them. In this paper it is proven that optical fibers with Bragg gratings can be used to detect impacts, and also that a high-frequency interrogator is necessary to collect valuable information about the impacts. The use of two interrogators constitutes the main novelty of this paper.

Nano-fibrillar arrays are fabricated using polystyrene materials. The average diameter of each fiber is about 300 nm. Experiments show that such a fibrillar surface possesses a relatively hydrophobic feature with a water contact angle of 142 degrees. Nanoscale friction properties are mainly focused on. It is found that the friction force of polystyrene nano-fibrillar surfaces is obviously enhanced in contrast to polystyrene smooth surfaces. The apparent coefficient of friction increases with the applied load, but is independent of the scanning speed. An interesting observation is that the friction force increases almost linearly with the real contact area, which abides by the fundamental Bowden-Tabor law of nano-scale friction.

A method is developed to calculate the settling speed of dilute arrays of spheres for the three cases of: I, a random array of freely moving particles; II, a random array of rigidly held particles; and III, a cubic array of particles. The basic idea of the technique is to give a formal representation for the solution and then manipulate this representation in a straightforward manner to obtain the result. For infinite arrays of spheres, our results agree with the results previously found by other authors, and the analysis here appears to be simpler. This method is able to obtain more terms in the answer than was possible by Saffman's unified treatment for point particles. Some results for arbitrary two sphere distributions are presented, and an analysis of the wall effect for particles settling in a tube is given. It is expected that the method presented here can be generalized to solve other types of problems.
